      P+ yes. Binge no

      • +3

Thanks. It's like Binge wants to fail, honestly.

        • +2

          Sideload Binge as above.

          I mean… it's effectively a Foxtel subsiduary .. so that probably explains a lot.

This + mango travel router = set for netflix & chill on trips away.
Now just need this covid thing to go away for good haha

    • +1

I bought one of each just for this reason. Except for the Netflix and chill part. You know that means sex right? Haha. I have used the mango on previous trips, amazing piece of kit for so little.

    • How do you feed internet to the stick if there’s no internet at the destination? Can the mango pickup and forward hotspot?

      • +1

The mango is a router and can pick up a wifi hotspot from phone, hotel wifi, cafe wifi, etc and serve it out to your connected devices. Can also do captive portal. Useful if your hotel only give you one or two logins for your whole family to use. It can also run a VPN from the device. You call also connect a USB HDD and run a small fileserver or dlna. Extremely capable device.

        • Is the fire stick capable of running iso movies from HDD plugged on mango?

          • +1

@ShouldIBuyIt: Yes, the mango has file server and dlna. I couldn't work out how to get connect to the file server with Kodi. However, dlna works well. Otoh, you can just get an OTG cable and run a USB stick off that with your iso without the mango.

            • @casval: Ok cheers, otg cable is on its way to test game emulator. Will see if it can decode isos too.

set for netflix & chill on trips away.

You can only have sex on trips with Netflix on?

  • Is it worth buying this if I have Nvidia Shield TV 2017 model?

    • -4

      What do you think ?

    • +1

Depends what you're looking for. If you want a media centre replacement, definitely not.

If you want something cheap to stream from, it's worth a look. I got the $35 fire TV stick lite to use on my outdoor TV… So if the weather ruins it, it won't bother me.

They're good for what they are, if you're willing to sideload some apps and spend some time tinkering with them.

    • +1

It’s not as good or versatile as a Nvidia Shield or an Apple TV but it is one fifth the price. It is a lot better than one fifth as good.

    • +2

It depends on what you want to do with it. A STB will have all the connectivity and especially the Nvidia Shield will have higher end specs. I have two of these too and have no intention of changing to the firestick max. The firestick, comes in handy for those other tvs you have, in a spare bedroom, patio area, for people with simple needs that are justing going to stream off apps or for travelling. For travelling, I have a firestick and mango router. Plug it in wherever you are and you have your same functionality. Fyi, if you want basic with simple remote, no AV1 ot wifi6 and 1080p only, then, look into the fire stick lite. Currently it is $35.

      • Perfectly summarised. $35 for a portable non-4K option makes it a no brainer.

  • Can we install android on this?

I feel ripped off by Amazon with non max version I got before for same price with their BS voucher only a month and a bit

    • Its pretty much the same thing. Our 4K non max edition is actually different to the original one that the yanks got. Ours was already a updated version that came along with the new remote.

    • Yeah, it's a bit poopy that they did that. I knew the max was coming but didn't expect them to drop the price of it so drastically.

I bought the non-max version for $49 from JB… it does the job, and only using it on a bedroom TV, so it's fine. Thankfully we got the newer remote as Fuzor said, otherwise i'd be a lil more annoyed!

      • Totally agree. I ended up buying second one max version for lounge. Non max in bedroom still it's appalling Amazon flogged off the non max which was a 2018 product for $49 same price as max

If I want to VPN and not be restricted to country codes, is this better than chromecast tv for setting up with a VPN ¿

    • This is relevant to my interests

  • Anyone know if this tv stick take antenna cable for free to air tv?

    • It does not.

    • -1

Just install kodi and there’s a free to air Addon you can put on. That’s what I did on mine

      • Or install the catch up tv app for the channels. Ch 2, 7, 9, 10 and SBS apps available.

  • anyone got issues mirroring your pc to the fire stick? (windows 10)

Hi, is this only for old TV, or can use it for smart TV?If so, what's the benefits, since smart TV already has all sorts of build in apps inside ..Thanks

    • If you can get away with the apps on your tv, then you don't need that. If your smart tv is missing some app, then that would be a way to have them. Thinking AppleTV+ , Paramount+, Kodi, kayo etc…
      + This

    • Nothing really. In built apps are typically fine. Depends on your tv though. Sometimes it doesn’t have all the apps. But I would imagine some like being able to install kodi, plex, Kayo, binge (which can be sideloaded on), paramount app. People may say frame rate matching but that’s not on all apps on the Firestick. I think it’s only in plex, kodi and the amazon prime app…
Possibly being able to install a VPN might be a consideration too.
If you are asking if you need it, I would probably assume you probably don’t.

      • Or your android tv is so slow you’ve given up watching tv.

  • Is this a big upgrade over the Samsung tizen OS?

    • Wrong post?

      • Sorry, i currently use the built in OS with my Samsung. It does the job but is pretty limited app wise. I am just wondering if the Fire stick is much of an upgrade or better than the Samsung software.

        • I would say yes. This and google Chromecast with tv would be better than any built-in OS which is not already google TV

        • +1

Ahhh ok. I didn't realise that Tizen was also on their TVs. I'm used to hearing it in relation to their watches.

The Firestick OS is basically Android and you can sideload apks with a little bit of screwing around. The downside is that there's just not a great amount of space onboard but you can one of those USB OTG cables that can still charge with and install apps to USB apparently. I haven't tried it personally, but I do have one of those cables.

Some apps straight up refuse to work even though they will with a Nvidia Shield. And thanks to the whole sideloading thing it'll run Kodi and SmartTube(YouTube without ads and SponsorBlock builtin). And through their appstore it has most (maybe all) the streaming services available.

Having an adfree and sponsor free YouTube experience is defiantly an upgrade compared to any normal YouTube TV experience. It was the whole reason why I bought one of these for my bedroom.

    • Yes. Youtube with no ads. Better iptv apps. And much more apps if you want to sideload.

    • I have a Samsung tizen OS TV and bought one of these recently. Not only is this device much faster you can also install many more apps then the tizen OS offers

      • Thanks everyone. i purchased one.

Does this device support Kodi natively without side loading?

I want to play video files, so I assume I need an OTG cable as well.

I want to replace an MI Box.

    Thanks

    • Kodi, Binge, Kayo all need sideloading. It's a pretty painless task. Only downside I assume would be manually needing to sideload these apps to get the upgrades.

      • So I guess that’s the same with Foxtel Go then too?

  • A bit of a quirk, but something beneficial for me. I own a 2020 Hisense 58S5 and own a 4th Gen Chromecast and the Fire Stick 4K Max. The universal IR remote functions (power and volume) of the Chromecast don't work on the TV, but they do on the Fire Stick.

Otherwise, the Fire Stick feels less polished than the Chromecast overall, but is nice to use with my Echo devices.

In summary, if cost is a factor, Fire Stick is good for the price, but Chromecast will offer a better experience overall. That said, if you already have Echo/Alexa or Google Home devices, you should prioritise the connectivity if you make good use of it.

  • Is it possible to install an add blocker on the Firestick Max for YouTube etc

    • this
Or just get YouTube india for $3/month…

      • Thx

        • Youtube Argentina is cheaper

          • @FrugalNotStingy: Wouldn’t India be better as it’s a English speaking country? Otherwise you’ll probably get Spanish/Portuguese recommendations with your account.

            • @fuzor: I’m on YouTube Premium Argentina and I never got any foreign recommendations. It just gives me recommendations that are similar to what I had watched.

    • -1

yeah go with the cheap YT premium.

not worth the hassle doing adblocker on firestick/ androidtv/etc
