Get a kobo. The kindle does not even have a colour screen.

    • +19

How often do colour screens come into play for reading books? Unless you're reading textbooks, most novels are black and white anyway (excepting the cover)

      • +5

If you are reading textbooks, an iPad or surface is so much better for notetaking and markup.

Colour ereaders are one of those things that sounds good in theory but it’s pretty niche.

        • +2

I like the kindle scribe! No cloud fees like remarkable.

        • +2

          Reading comics?

          • +2

@elcheapoinoz: Every comic nerd I’ve spoken to (ie, two) said the contrast and vibrancy is way too low and page turns too slow for them to read their incel magicschool tentacle literature.

      • +2

Screen is way too small to read comics, or even Manga reliably. I would get a tablet for that purpose. Much better colour depth and response, much higher resolution, bigger screen. I tried reading Manga on my paperwhite and, while doable, it's far from an optimal experience.

        • Manga is great on the scribe!

        • Screen is large enough. I remember reading manga on my 3GS which was on 3.5” screen.

    • +15

Every review and recommendation I have seen is to only get the colour screen if you need colour, as the black and white quality on the color screen is worse than the straight black and white screen.

      • +1

The Kobo Libra 2 is the only one in their current lineup with page turn buttons which was a big deal for me.

    • +9

I guess that's a problem if the kinds of books you read are full of pictures.

      • Hey don't knock picture books!

        • What about colouring books?

          • @illusion99: Good point. This one is more suited to grayscale colouring. :P

      • +9

        Hey, hentai is also art!

      • -2

        Comic books?

    • +1

Where can I find a 7" Kobo for anywhere around this price? The Libra Colour is $130 more.

    • +16

I have a Kobo Libra Colour, and what I like most about Kobo eReaders is the direct Libby integration. Being able to borrow books from my local library right on the device is a big pro over Kindle.

      • +3

        I agree

Having linked my kobo and also lenovo ereaders to Sora, which let's you borrow from your local library catalogue, has been a real game changer.

Very happy as we read lots of kids books and it's so easy to get the next Captain Underpants book every 2-3 days

    • +9

I'd recommend a Kobo non colour over a Kindle any day. Much more flexible device especially in AU

    • +5

Agree - I've lost all trust with Kindle. A couple of months ago went on hols - turned on the Kindle and all my books that I have uploaded from Calibre had been deleted by Amazon without any warnings or notification. To be honest I'm beginning to prefer real books again.

      • +2

Same here. I thought it was me but no….

    • Golden books?

  • kindle used to be around $100 and now ATL is $229?

    • +9

      kindle vs kindle paperwhite

      • My books always have acid yellow paper so a normal kindle feels more normal

      • Glad I bought my kindle Paperwhite signature edition for $199 in late 2022…

  • Have had many kindles even the top model of this one, prefer my mini 7.
    Don't read in full sun.

  • This probably won't drop further in the Prime Day sale right?

Any predictions if anyone will offer more than 8% cashback?

    • +4

If you can wait, wait - as it won't go up during Prime Days.

  • I assume NAB10 and CARD10 codes don't work with topcashback

    • +1

CARD10 worked with cashrewards 8% the other day for me… or at least it tracked. Not sure if it will actually credit though.

  • Thanks OP. Also got one, for my partner.

  • +5

Prime day starts tomorrow, better wait for that. At least they will upsize the cashback with the same price

  • Have they releassd jailbreak for latest firmware?

    • They released one about 5 months ago, after years of being stuck. Not sure if it has been patched by Amazon as of today

      • I already jailbroke mine before the latest firmware update but not sure if the current is released.

    • Take this with a grain of salt (ditched mine years ago to replace with Kobo Clara) but I saw a vid the other day that said all versions can be broken, regardless of how recent. Worth investigating… certainly got me interested again

  • Do you have to pay for books or can you load any pdf from external sources and read?

    • +3

you can load via USB, wirelessly using Send to Kindle or use Calibre to manage & send your ebooks

    • +11

I've also heard there is a lovely archive of books by someone named Anna that you can browse

    • -2

As per my comment above - Amazon can reach in and DELETE all your books uploaded from Calibre.

      • +7

I have been using Kindles for over 15 years and currently have 4 Paperwhites in the house and have never had this happen. We only use Calibre to load books.

        • +2

Yea - same - had just replaced the battery in my Kindle with keyboard (must be 15 yo) - but it happened (plenty of discussions on other forums about it) and it made an impression on me.

        • Had mine for over an year, all my books are from Calibre and it's constantly connected to the Wi-Fi. No issues so far. Also, we can just leave it disconnected. Amazon won't be able to do much…

          • @martinezjpo: Sorry, not sure what Calibre is. Do you need to buy from there or is it just used to upload the books into Kindle?

  • +1

Tempted to replace my 1st gen Kindle Oasis, but think I'd miss the physical page turn buttons

    • +5

      You will miss them.

    • +1

Replace it with a Kobo Libra, it has page turn buttons. I love mine.

    • I got over not having page turn buttons pretty quickly. The thing I couldn't go back to is a 6 inch screen.

      • The Paperwhite is also 7". If it wasn't, that'd make my decision easier.

    • Supposedly, with one of the later Kindle updates, you're able to double tap the kindle itself (on the edge). I found this from the other kindle deal posted here today and from a quick google search, it seems that it applies to the new Kindle's

  • +2

this or the 2024 light version ?
sorry never used Kindle but on my wishlist for a while now

    • +1

6' or 7'? for me its 7' any day, YMMV.

    • +1

I prefer the basic one since it's smaller, lighter and cheaper, but depends on your usage.

I think only the paperwhite is waterproof though.

  • +1

Why no love for the basic kindle at $169? https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CP31QS6R

    • Good price, arguably an easier format for every day carry. I do have the paperwhite especially because of the backlit display but the standard is pretty good

      • Oh right, didn't realise front vs backlight, does that make much difference? will have to read some reviews..

        • Let me know your thoughts. Didn’t realise they had both now

        • Sorry, I actually explained things wrong. They have the same front lighting system. The paperwhite has 17 LEDs and the basic has 4, so the ligthing on the paperwhite is quite a bit more even. Paperwhite also has a warm light option and you can dial the intensity of the warmth. These two things are a pretty big deal for me. The other thing is that I read at night a lot, the minimum brightness is VERY low on the paperwhite, which is great. Not sure how it is on the basic Kindle.

Other than that and screen size, I think it's all same-same.

  • What firmware version do these ship with?

  • thanks OP
    got one

  • What's a difference between Kindle app that works on iPad vs the dedicated Kindle device?

    • +4

Kindle devices use e-ink. The screen looks more like paper than an iPad screen, so it's much easier on the eyes, and can be read in all lighting conditions.

Also, battery life is really good.

  • +5

I'd highly advise against buying a Kindle. The software is actively getting worse with anti-consumer changes from Amazon. I switched to a Kobo and have been having a much nicer experience. The software is more open and has many more features. You can even borrow eBooks from Overdrive and Libby using your local library card

    • Assuming I jailbreak either the paperwhite or basic version and load in something like KOreader, would the kobo then be significantly better/worse?

      • +3

If you jailbreak and use KOReader the experience becomes a lot closer. You get the better file format support and customisation. That being said Kobo still has native OverDrive and Libby support, better openness out of the box and no need to mess with jailbreaking or updates breaking things. I've had instances where Amazon will remove, change and update the Kindle and books without consent or notification. Kobo's still the better option overall imo

        • just leave it on airplane and use zlibrary, its not that hard

  • You spelled paperweight wrong

  • this, or colour Boox for about $50 more?

  • wth.. priced went down to $217. Very frustrating.
