Decent enough laptop for my needs with respect to processor, RAM and SSD for everyday home use.
$1 cheaper than their ebay store. Chat with their support and may be you can get a (student) discount code for an extra 7% off (or start here : https://www.dell.com/en-au/lp/student-laptops)
Dont forget cashrewards of 6%. I ended up paying $1,208.06. Tracked CR of $32.94, so effectively paid $1208.06-$32.94

Was looking for a Laptop and this deal seems to be a great bang for the price.

Downgrade to 512GB SSD to save $100
Then add a 1TB SSD if you need it for around $120-150

Yeah, personally, I dont see the logic in such things. Same goes for the RAM. What's the point of spending more money, spending personal time, being anxious if it will turn out alright, assuming more risk, creating potential for damage and possibly voiding warranty. But to each his own.

That's fair. A lot of users are more savvy and so this would be a zero risk 5-10 mins of work for a nice boost to storage.

      • Depends how confident and tech savvy you are. Dell laptops are generally quite easy to open up and upgrade components.
Also you can choose the drive and RAM instead of getting whatever Dell provide.

I recently tried to add in an old NMVe drive into my new laptop. So many things the online tutorials don't tell you. It seems so simple, but it wasn't. Had to get new screw drivers to open the laptop as some screws were too hard to remove. Then removing the existing NMVe drive so I can put a new one in was a nightmare (they are different sizes so I hade to put the existing one into the second slot). Putting it all back together and I hear different sounds now from the laptop. Some of the screws still don't feel like they are sitting all the way in but I applied as much pressure as I reasonably could before striping the metal.

Online tutorials make it looks so easy (if you can find one for your specific model), but they leave out a lot of things, like how hard is too hard to pull on things… etc…

This is not my first time tinkering with a laptop, but its my last. Next time I am buying a laptop with the specs I don't feel need to upgrade myself.

    • I don't really understand this logic.

You can just benchmark your space requirements from your previous PC (assuming this is not your first rodeo). In that case, why would someone take your approach? Do you mean to buy a better SSD in the market?

That is a lot better than losing 20-50$.

I did something similar this with a recent Dell laptop. Downgraded RAM and HDD to bring the $ down and bought on black Fri sales to add into the additional RAM/HDD slots.

  • Everything is great spec except my offspring needs 13 or 14 inch screen.
    Grrr.

    • +3

      Get new offspring…

      • +1

No guarantee the new offspring will be ok with 15”😀

Tell em to start hitting the gym. Survival of the fittest

    • 13/14 inch ones will not be powerful. But again if it is for regular school use then this is overkill. The powerful cpu will be power hungry

      • You can get more or less the same specs in a 14" package sans dedicated graphics card (which this doesn fhave anyway).

would you guys recommend Intel over the 5500U Ryzen? Also the Ryzen with 8g is only 1,103 but upgrade to 16gb is only available on the 5700 and makes it 1,698! Wonder why they didnt offer 16gb upgrade on the 5500U, anyways i think you can buy ram sticks for $100 these days

    • Was wondering the same thing

    • I have a dell docking station which with just 1 thunderbolt port, charges my laptop and connects to both my monitors, my keyb, mouse, printer, headphone, you name it. I can't live without thunderbolt anymore so Intel it is for me

Do you know if you use the student 7% code if the Cashrewards/Shopback will still works? It seems to suggest it won't and they're currently 12% so they'd be better. Thanks!

    • can you let us know if it worked please?

      • I've messaged Cashrewards to ask but they haven't responded yet. If I try it I'll let you know. Hoping they might reply before the 12% runs out tomorrow

  • I actually placed the order just now, haven't received any cashback tracking - thought this should occur straight away. I might cancel and just order with 12% discount instead.

    • Hmm that's rather annoying, still nothing?

      • hey mate i got the cb tracked email but not approved. so not sure if it will go thru. By accident I picked 500gb instead of 1 Tb :( cbf to cancel and reorder.
looks like the battery and screen are lack luster compared to the Lenovo deal posted few days, but I guess that was a price error and probably wont be at that price anytime soon. My 6 yrs old Inspiron 15 is on its last leg!

  • Just thought I will share, looks like the battery on this is really bad..some reviews claiming only about 7 hrs.. compared to the Lenovo slimpro which claimed 16hrs and much better screen quality at this price point. Though it is slightly heavier compared to the Dell.
