What deal? I see no thread here..

    • +4

This was one of the recent ones : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/670097

      • +4

That price did not include GST which you get charged by them during checkout. As per the OP- "The price I posted includes their lowest cost shipping opting, but does not include GST."

        • +5

          Not my deal.
Just posted link for visibility, and the kind of healthy discussions you folks bring.

          fyi,
Shopping express black friday deal @$599 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/674622

        • Yeah OP said you didn't need to pay gst by putting in an ABN. I queried him on it in the thread but TBH I still don't understand if it's ok?!

          • @justtoreply: If you are registered for GST, even if you pay it, you claim it back. Assuming this is a business purchase.

            • @[Deactivated]: What's the premise though? If the business is the end user of the product, then no gst will ever be paid on that product?

              • +1

@justtoreply: Correct. Businesses essentially collect GST on goods and services they provide, but get a credit against that for any they paid. It doesn't matter if they were the end user of the product or not, if the GST was on cleaning services for their office etc.

So essentially you forward the GST you collect from customers to the ATO minus that which you have paid.

Only individuals end up paying GST (or businesses that collect less GST than they spend or don't register for the GST). Note if you're not registered for the GST, if you put in an ABN your business will be liable for the unpaid GST if they don't collect it.

                • @[Deactivated]: Thanks. That last paragraph seems crucial and explains why i didn't get it.

If an ozbargainer puts in an ABN on newegg to avoid GST, but they run a $0 business, then they've dodged gst illegally (unless they actually choose to pay the ATO later)

Of course it probably doesn't get policed properly (newegg talking to ATO).

                  • @justtoreply: I'm not sure the ATO will follow it up, but Newegg would be talking to the ATO at some level if they're collecting GST. (how much I'm not sure). Technically you're also supposed to be liable for extra customs duties (on top of GST) if you import things (or groups of identical things even via multiple transactions) worth more than $1000 as well, but for example Amazon only collect it if in a single transaction.

      • Good work!

  • What's the difference between this and WD red pro 18tb?

    • +3

The HC550 has a higher (better) workload, MTBF, etc than the Red Pro.

      • Oh right. Damn… I've already got a Red Pro in my NAS… not sure whether I should mix/match with this or not to get RAID1

        • +3

Mix and match away, especially for getting into a RAID 1 setup, but with the bonus of adding a more reliable drive into your NAS. Dont sweat the Red Pro purchase, damn fine drive, and will likely be as reliable for your use case realistically.

  • +1

Prices getting more attractive, though still not low enough to negate the warranty risk for me.

    • Just picked up for myself the HC 550 16TB brand new (not refurb nor Recertified) for $398 Australian dollars including Fedex Delivery. Warranty is return overseas as per usual. Ill update more once I receive my drive (Fedex is saying Wednesday), run the serials, etc if you are interested and point you in the right direction of the eBay seller.

      • +1

        Hey @Spizz,
Where did you buy the 16tb from?
I am also looking to buy few.

      • Interesting. Question will be whether you can successfully register international/aus warranty with WD. I've lost count of the instances on forums etc about a listing (even on amazon) claims there is warranty but then when you try to register the serial it does not accept it, claims OEM and to go to seller who then claims only for origin country only. At $398 though its potentially worth the gamble as similar to external shucking prices .

        • +1

That is the gamble I took at that price, I went in expecting no local Warranty and expecting return to overseas if I had issues. If I can obtain local warranty I would consider that the icing on the cake.

          • @Spizz: The problem is some you cannot even get support returning to overseas as the manufacturer do not support and the retailer have their conditions which is hard to work through. Hopefully none of this applies to your mystery seller… eagerly awaiting :D

            • @Xizor: As I said at that price i took the gamble sans warranty YMMV as you weigh up your risk aversion.

      • +1

Which seller? I’m interested too :)

          • +1

@Spizz: Sounds good. I’m willing to take a gamble on a couple too

      • +1

Yeah, I'd like the details if it works out.

        • -4

Will do and more than happy to do so for anyone else. Even though I was downvoted above I am being cautious as it is outside of their eBay channel and payment is via PayPal only so little recourse in case it isn't New, etc. However considering their feedback I am hoping for the best and took the risk. YMMV. Mid week Ill find out for sure according to Fedex.

          • +1

            @Spizz:

            outside of their eBay channel

            Pretty crucial information there 🤷‍♂️

          • +4

@Spizz: Such a tease, most of us ozbargainers aren't that into foreplay I'd imagine

          • +2

@Spizz: If you paid by PayPal then you're covered for 6 months for any issues. They are very good for stuff like that. If you do have issues just follow paypals instructions not the sellers for refund etc.

          • @Spizz: Well let's see when you can share or even post up a deal on here!

            • +1

@jace88: It arrived today. I have sent you a PM with the details. I could list their eBay deal but it would be equal to some of the NewEgg deals. Going direct is where the savings is at and I don't think OzBargain would let you post a business email as a deal but you take some risk as I mentioned in the comments above which only each individual can weigh up.

              • @Spizz: If anyone else would like the info, just drop me a PM.

        • +2

From his description, seller is likely eastdigitalhk on eBay.

      • +1

        bro wtf share

  • +9

Perfect timing thanks. My Linux ISO collection keeps filling up my drives.

    • +1

Try convert to x265, results aren't bad

      • I've watched them several times

        • I trim them all to 45 seconds.

      • +1

I set up a script to go through all my ISOs and re-encode them. It ran for months - though to be fair, it was on a low powered machine. It ran at about 7fps. Now that it has caught up the backlog, it re-encodes any fresh distributions as they are released.

        • Manual script or something like unmaniac / handbrake? Not sure I'm patient enough to shrink ~8TB of Linux ISOs but x264 oft transcodes regardless when family want the latest Ubuntu

          • +1

@JBxrm: It's all automatic, managed by systemd timer units (or use cron if you wish). Runs on linux.

        • Can you give more details about this? Your PMS are turned off, send me a message?

        • This will result in highly inefficient and low quality encodes. It's just better to download quality encodes

  • -5

    Will it blend?

  • Watch out for these drives from Amazon, I got caught out with WD not providing warranty support being an OEM drive. A massive pain if you have already loaded these into your NAS etc…

    • hey mate, bring such a new drive, u had issues with it already?

      • no but i did try to register it for warranty. thats when WD told me they wouldnt cover it. I then had to go through a returns process with Amazon.

  • To share my experience after buying 2 of these from Amazon:

You don't get charged anything extra (gst, duties) for these drives.

They have no warranty from WD. WD will refer you to your vendor.

    • You do get charged with GST, look at your invoice.

The price for this post includes GST

      • +1

Which is what I said, or tried to say. You pay this price and don't pay anything extra.

  • +1

So is there any definitive warranty on these?
Or is it a contact Amazon and hope for the best. Seems this is the biggest gripe with hdd deals recently unless they’re external usb drives.

Would be ideal to have a process defined for sending back and or that there is indeed support one or two years later etc

    • I'd like to know too - the reviews on it say that you need to contact WD directly

    • That's what worries me about buying these grey import data centre grade drives. If I'm going to pay a premium over the good ol' shucked white drives, I'd like to know I'm getting some peace of mind for it.

  • Anyone know if chias dead???

    • +1

      Hope so.

    • Doing better than other cryptos, but you won’t make your money back

  • +3

    18TB. That's a lot of porn.

    • how many hours of porn is that? Gotta get ready for next lockdown

    • +1

18TB is not enough for the latest 4k-8k VR porn…

    • +3

8K dolby vision vr porn will necessitate this.

      • 8k. That's a lot of definition.

  • Price drop. Now $561.48 on Amazon AU.

    • +1

That's $551 AUD delivered but it's nowhere near the same calibre of drive.

      • They're often wd white label, which can be the same as the wd red nas drives. Also they show up as 517.05 when I look at it.

      • -2

@Vladdo - that's not how it works - you could end up with this exact drive, albeit unlabelled and without warranty once you've shucked it…

        • +2

Keep in mind while the white labels run the same hardware, they're often throttled in firmware to give "5K rpm" transfer speeds, so they are in fact slower

          • @Tigerhacker: Yep, it's a lottery - you don't know what you're going to get in the external case.
Absolutely fine for random bulk storage, not fine if you need a drive with specific specs.

    • +1

No because I paid $422 for it off Amazon AU (shipped from Amazon UK) back in end November. Also, the elements uses a 5400 rpm white drive.

      • Is this referring to the drive in the OP or one of the other drives discussed in the comments?

        • No, this is in relation to the Elements drive that Scrobo linked in his post above.

  • Does this work for Synology? DS1821+?
their compatilibity list only shows up to 16gb. Not the 18gb version

    • Same with the compatibility list for the DS918+

The compatibility list's are not exclusive it's just what's been officially tested and confirmed.

I chanced it and these drives are working perfectly in my DS918+ (bought from this deal with ABN so no GST and a bit cheaper https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/670097#comment-11632097)

Likely it will be fine but YMMV.

  • Need a deal on the 16tbs!

  • +1

$560.10 this morning, seem to be still headed a little south

    • Thanks. Have updated post. Seems like currency fluctuations.

  • I cancelled my order… warranty is a bit of a concern and risk is too high.

  • Not a great bargain for a user wanting to install it into a desktop PC. DC drives are noisy!

    • +2

By reading online reviews this one is the quietest one among all DC HDDs

      • If it's anything like the WD Red Pro 18tb I have then it's pretty noisy. Audible through the whole house in the dead of night to the point where my wife makes me schedule the NAS to turn off at 10pm

    • Surely there are better options than a DC drive for a desktop PC? Or is it because there just aren't many 18TB drives around?

  • +3

Purchased for $543.30 using 3% disconnected Amazon gift card.
Remember to take advantage if you are a Macquarie or Suncorp bank customer.

    • “Disconnected gift card” - made my day ;)

    • Have you received your drive, yet? How did it go?

      • +2

Ordered 3, two are shipped and one remain unshipped. Will update when they arrives

  • +1

Mine shipped today. Coming via Australia Post. First I’ve seen this from Amazon US. Seen APG E-commerce commonly but not directly Australia Post. Are they already in Aus?

    • -1

Amazon bulk-ship to Australia, then hand over to AusPost 👍

  • +1

I ordered three at the same time, two were shipped first at the same time with Fastway tracking numbers, the third one shipped 4 days after with AusPost tracking number.

Update 18/01: One Fastway parcel arrived today. Unfortunately, it was DOA: NAS reported error, and Win10 cannot recognise the disk. :(
Contacted WD in the first place, they advised they cannot RMA this one as it is OEM stock from a different region, and suggested I contact Amazon for the replacement. Amazon AU can't replace the item since it's from Amazon US, can only do return and place another order.
Will see how it goes with the other two.

    • +1

Thats annoying, I'd ask for an advanced refund so you can re-order without delay. Returns go back to the US so you may not get your refund for 4-6 weeks.

      • +1

Great point. Just called Amazon and they agreed to provide early refund.
        Thanks

    • +3

Update 19/01: Received the 2nd one from fastway, plugged into the NAS and recognised straightway. Initiated "Bad block" scan, hope it goes well.

    • +3

Update 20/01: Bad block scan complete on the 2nd HDD, all good. Disk noise level is low and disk temperature is below 42C degrees over the whole scanning time.

And the third one just delivered from AusPost, installed into NAS, so far so good.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience.

Did you get charged extra for GST? (because of more than $1,000)

It is a pitty WD won't honour RMA. Did Amazon provide prepaid label for returning the faulty drive?

Unsure if question is valid, was product registered fine on WD US or AU site?

      • GST is included in the price and therefore and charged when buying on Amazon AU even though it’s from Amazon US.

Yes, Amazon provide a prepaid label, no charge.

      • +1

As joelhinch said, GST is included with the price which can be found in the Amazon invoice. I placed three separate orders to make the each parcel's value lower than $1000, therefore no import duties need to be paid.

This is actually good, Amazon provided prepaid label, pack the item and dropoff to a parcelpoint location. The label indicates the parcel goes to Amazon Hub in Sydney and they will handle the rest of returning to Amazon US.

It's WD My Support Portal, I believe it's a global website. Once the product is registered it comes up in my profile, but shows "IN WARRANTY (OUT OF REGION)".

        Hope it helps

        • +1

Thanks again for the great info!

  • +1

Both of my drives arrived via AusPost the other day.
Full scans complete, all 100% healthy. Nice drives!
