Wow is there still such a shortage that one retailer having preorders open at RRP makes 3 people post a deal in 1 minute?

    • +6

At least people can still see these post. If it's from Amazon/bigw/target in stock drop. We won't even see these posts.

    • +4

i think you answered your own question m8

      • There have been Twitter handles, websites, email subscriptions etc to inform of stock the moment they drop. I guess I didn't realise people were still so keen to pay RRP for a 2020 console in 2022.

What other tech device could you post a deal almost 18 months since pre-orders opened at RRP (besides PS5)

        • +24

Literally any currently "available" GPU would be a massive bargain at RRP in today's market.

          • @miarn: Absolutely. I appreciate that you specified "available" because even cards from 2019, 2018 hell 2017 are going above RRP.

        • +2

Nintendo Switch had a shortage in 2020 3 years after release

        • +5

The system is barely over 1 year old it was released in November of 2020. This is not a phone with a new model released each year.

This is these peoples life now, like the people that line up for the new iPhone. The vibe on ozbargain used to be “we don’t need this item, we will wait until it becomes a bargain”, now it’s “please take my money, I am your slave”.

      • +3

i think you've been in isolation for too long

      • +1

ive got an xbox 360 ill sell to you if you want

        $748

        • +2

Ummm, you mustn’t understand what I’ve written.

          • +1

            @kiriakoz: $747?

          • +1

@kiriakoz: Since when is OZB about we don’t need this item, we will wait until it becomes a bargain? Also, are you aware of the following:

            • With an EB pre-order, you can cancel it.
            • You can get discount vouchers with EB, so it isn't really pure RRP.
            • Due to Covid, for consoles, wait until it becomes a bargain has turned out to be a bad idea for at least 1 year, if not 2. EB's pre-order deal for the initial launch day of Series X/PS5 was so much better than this, your "wait wait wait" idea is so far a bad idea.

Also, this probably has something to do with Microsoft buying Activision. You can easily get more than $749 worth of entertainment value with GamePass.

    • Yes

    • EB capitalising on the Activision/Blizzard acquisition is my guess.

      • +3

Or EB just offering pre-orders for a console that goes out of stock all the time is my guess

  • is this 1 per wave or like 1 per account regardless anyone know?

    • 1 per wave, I picked up one for my brother another time at EB, just tried again now and seems to let me go and pay for it.

      • two for family! you can still order if you have in a previous one.

      • They will likely cancel your order if you put it under the same CC/EB World account. It's happened to me in the past and the only way you find our is when they decide to call you and cancel the order or you happen to go into the store to collect or pay it off. They've been instructed to refund you on the spot in this situation.

PS: for me it was a PS5 which was bought for a mate.

        • I have bought two PS5s from ebgames, they didnt cancel my order. Maybe your store is different.

        • i have been able to secure a couple of ps5's as well under my eb world account (Not for scalping) to help friends. they paid retail, and none where cancelled either.!

  • Did anyone previously manage to pay the remaining amount with EB gift cards. Their website said must be paid with debit or credit cards?

    • +5

yes you can, you can use multiple gift cards to pay for the remaining balance in store, I picked one up previously

    • +1

You pay the rest upon pickup so possibly could use gift card? Not 100% sure though. Maybe just the deposit is debit/credit cards.

    • +1

You can pay your remaining in store using gift card.

    • +1

Great, because Redeemyourgiftcard has 8% off EBGames gift cards.

    • +1

Yes you can pay the remaining in gift card and you can also pay the deposit in gc. When you pick up your console from EB, tell them if you can cancel and pay the full amount in gc. I did that for PS5 and they are ok with it.

  • +1

    @buy2much

they disable gift cards for online pre order it was a recent change i had the same problem, you can only C & C online with gift cards in stock items. can only use GC in store to pre order or pay off an existing order

    • I meant the remaining payment upon pick up.

  • +1

    @buy2much
answer to your question is yes, there not allowed to refuse gift card as payment in store. the cc/debit thing is only for the initial deposit, they can't accept GC online for the initial deposit only.

    • +7

      People said that about Nintendo.

      • I still think the Wii is one of the best consoles ever made and I play Xbox frequently.

        • Most people still Wii every day.

        • My Wii's optical drive is dying on me. Wii Sports is a hot favourite I'll miss.

    • +12

first line was reasonable, second line is pretty bizarre considering Sony's track record for 4 straight consoles now.

      • Sony is lucky their PS division does so well, and that they were able to come back from the abysmal launch of the PS3.

        • +2

Lucky? It's not lucky when it has happened 4 straight times now. Even with the poor PS3 launch they still outsold xbox 360 by the end of its run. I'm loving my series X, and have barely even touched my ps5, but lets not talk crazy here.

    • if they are going to make a market imbalance with exclusives with mainstream games, its going to be the end of life for those studios most likely.

      • So you mean…finally do what Sony have been doing with their anti-gamer practices for the last few generations of consoles?

        • i’m telling, Microsoft has a history of destroying companies after acquisitions :-)

          • @kaleidoscope: Not Xbox, besides Rare.

Playground Games, 343, The Coalition, Turn10, Mojang, Obsidian, Ninja Theory, etc etc have all continued to produce good shit under the XGS division.

    • +2

Which would be terrible, because competition drives innovation and investment.

    • While i agree the Series X is the better console, Sony's exclusives will keep it relevant and most people would go PC instead of Xbox if they can afford to as PC gets the small amount of games it has plus the (profanity) of PC games to play as well.
No doubt they will get cod fans to buy Xbox's over PlayStation when they make some part of COD exclusive to xbox

      • +5

most people would go PC instead of Xbox if they can afford to as PC gets the small amount of games it has plus the (profanity) of PC games to play as well

Well that's the thing, affordability and accessibility. You need to spend a lot more money on a PC to get similar performance, particularly when factoring in peripherals, and it's a lot less accessible for most people.

PCs require you to know what hardware to buy, you have to deal with driver issues, far more bugs. An xbox offers a compact, high-value, high-performance plug and play solution with optimised games. That's what the majority of the market wants.

        • -4

That whole lack of knowledge point is basically moot these days with thousands of Youtube videos, multiple Reddit pages and a crapton of websites that will help you with what parts and how to build it.

The only thing that remains is cost, whether you can afford it which is what i said in my original comment.

          • +1

            @Axelstrife:

That whole lack of knowledge point is basically moot these days with thousands of Youtube videos, multiple Reddit pages and a crapton of websites that will help you with what parts and how to build it.

It isn't a moot point at all. Sure the information is available, but you still need to put in a degree of effort that a lot of people do not want to do.

PCs have their place, but they don't offer a streamlined plug-and-play experience that the vast majority of the market wants.

        • I agree, when I first bought my current gaming rig after ten years or more without a gaming PC I wondered if I'd made a mistake. But after a few months catching up I now have a rig that is a beast and everything runs like clockwork. Totally customised to my needs and I play Xbox games, a few Sony releases and a motherload of PC games as well as a free epic games library. I'll never go back to console, I just bought one of these series X but that's basically for my kids to benefit from my game pass ultimate and as a 4k Bluray player.

    • I mean I’m a huge Xbox fan and my ps5 is gathering dust. But it’s really stupid to think Sony will fade. Recent figures still have them 5-6 million ahead and that’s a shortage that’s much worse then Xbox around the world. Plus most ex blizzard staff have already left that made blizzard blizzard in the past same goes for the cod guys with Deviation games

      • I'm strongly considering trying to swap my XSX (impulse buy from JB) for a PS5 and then getting a Series S for Game Pass only… seems like it's the best of both worlds, getting the bargain of Game Pass plus the PS5 exclusives.

        • +2

How is it the best of both worlds? The console you would play most (Xbox) you are playing worse versions of a game. Then the expensive PS5 will be gathering dust for months before you play a game on it.

          • @sallan75: Don't particularly mind the lower quality tbh, sitting at TV distance with bad eyesight it's not a deal-breaker. Disc PS5 since I'd likely be buying games for that so have the option to re-sell.

    • +3

I hope Sony don't fade. I'm an Xbox gamer, have several Xbox consoles and also game on PC.
Have plans to get a PS5 one day, but having Sony fade away would be terrible. Competition drives all the great experiences we have as gamers.

  • +19

After acquiring Activision Blizzard, these XBOX series X are going to be lit with Game Pass.

    • +5

Sony fanboys are out in force today wow relax let man be happy ffs

      • -5

        PS5 > TrashBox Series X

    • +8

Look I agree with you definitely, in the short term it will most likely be great for game pass users. The long term ramifications of one mega corporation owning quite literally at least half of the AAA game developers is a bit concerning…

Who know's, A/B may not be their last acquisition either, I think we all thought after Bethesda their wallets would be hurting and they'd lay low for a while, but here we are…

      • Note the deal is scheduled to complete sometime in 2023.
Whether or not it gets approval is another thing, though they seem supremely confident

      • +1

Theres always space for small talented studios to pop up.

        • Yep and as soon as they do something decent… Boom MS chucks 50million their way and they are now under the MS umbrella.

          • +2

@Binchicken22: That's the way it's always been, they don't have to sell but that $50m is the incentive for people to become game developers.

        • Indie game market is huge, the great part is you can play on any PC hardware. Fallout 4 and Nier Automata was the last AAA games I played last 5 years. Thanks to steam, it has pushed that trend.

          • @Yotta00: I just don't have my finger on the pulse when it comes to indie games. I eventually find out about the very hyped top tier indies but I know there are more out there, I just have no idea where they are. I also dislike 8 bit graphics but I have really enjoyed some of the 8 bit style games that I've played. Right now I'm a bit addicted to Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5, just some casual crazy fun after mainlining iRacing for a year.

      • It is concerning but it's nowhere near "owning literally at least half of the AAA game developers"; this acquisition deal would still only make Microsoft the 3rd largest video game publisher.

        • +1

I guess I was excluding Nintendo in my assumption, was more thinking out of PS/Xbox/PC "mature" gaming (no offense to adult Nintendo gaming, I know it's still fun).

      • The long term ramifications of one mega corporation owning quite literally at least half of the AAA game developers is a bit concerning…

Good thing they don't own half the AAA industry not even CLOSE.

  • Thanks OP 👍

  • +9

Thanks OP, preordered for $70 billion

    • $69billion, get it right.

  • Go go go!

    staaahp!

  • Something went wrong, please contact Customer Service on 13 39 30 :(

  • Thanks for posting this. I just pre-ordered. Let's hope it actually arrives 1 February.

  • The FOMO is real.

    • +2

Maybe cause it’s an amazing console?

    • +5

I think it ceases to be “fear” of missing out when 16 months after launch people legitimately can’t get their hands on a unit and may have been waiting months to get one.

    • Have you looked at graphic card prices?

  • What games would you or do you actually play on consoles as opposed to on a PC?

    • Fifa

      • Fifa is on PC.

        • +2

If you can locate a corrupt organisation and a soccer ball, you don't even need that.

        • You haven't played FIFA on PC, have you?

          It's a mistake you'll only make once.

          • +1

@imurgod: Ha nah I haven't. I've seen it on Xbox gamepass. Thanks for the heads up.

            • @jeffereigh2: All good. I got it on PC in 2019 and it ran like crap.

That said, now (FIFA 22) you have to buy 2 different versions for the same console if you want to play online.

How ridiculous is that?! 2 copies of the same freaking game?

I've bought FIFA every year since 1996 but I'm really done with it after that dick move.

        • Yep it sure is bit fifa is a game you play with mates.
Sitting down on the lounge playing matches of fifa is the best way to experience this game.
I don't play competitively but when I do play it just feels right on a console in front of a TV with friends

    • +3

I can not afford a PC

      • Of course you can

    • +1

TV is more social for me. If I play games with the kids, it's on the TV. When they're in bed, I play on the PC.

    • +4

A video card costs more than this for people these days.

      • but can you mine crypto on this lol
