7.5% off JB Hi-Fi eGift Cards (Was 5%, Transaction Fee May Apply) @ Reward Gateway (Membership Required)

710

For those who have access to the Reward Gateway program through their employer, JB Hi-Fi eGift Cards are being sold at a (slightly) increased discount for today only.

What is Reward Gateway?

Reward Gateway is an employee program that gives you access to discounted eGift cards and cashback across a large range of retailers.

How do I access Reward Gateway?

Your employer needs to be subscribed to this program before you can apply to access the program. Once you are given access, you can log into Reward Gateway through:

  • The dedicated website for your company, or
  • The SmartSpending app on iOS/Android.

What is the transaction fee?

Transaction fees will vary depending on the type of card used to complete the transaction. The feedback I have been given by their support team is as follows:

  • MasterCard or Visa debit card: 0%
  • Standard MasterCard or Visa credit card: 0%
  • Premium / Platinum MasterCard or Visa credit card: 0.5%
  • Standard AMEX card: 1.5%
  • Premium AMEX card: 3%

Can I use prepaid gift cards (e.g. Vanilla Visa gift cards) as a payment method?

No. Reward Gateway requires all debit, credit and prepaid cards to support 3D Secure. Prepaid gift cards do not support 3D Secure, so they will be blocked by the payment processor.

What denominations of JB Hi-Fi eGift cards are available through Reward Gateway?

At the time of posting this deal, you can specify a denomination between $10 and $5,000.

  • Seems strange you would get charged more for different types of Amex or Mastercard/Visa.

    • +5

Not really, Vodafone do the same.
Card providers charge more for the more premium cards. Both companies are just complying with the payment card surcharge rules.

      • +5

Makes sense. Just another way for financial institutions to rear end you.

At least most retailers and restaurants etc only have a single fee for the type Amex or Mastercard/Visa. If this trend continues then there would be no point paying for a premium credit card to get more benefits when you are getting charged even more on top of a standard card for general spending.

        • -2

I don't think you understand how credit cards work. You seem to be under the impression that you are receiving some benefit when the reality is you are losing money.

          • @Diji1: I don’t think you understand. Depending on your spending then there are many benefits. Obviously this changes when you take into account charges like this.

            • @motlking: OP was talking net benefit.

If I pay 10k for a chocolate bar I get the benefit of a chocolate bar. Doesn't mean it is a good deal

    • I think it's got to do with points.

    • +2

The ATO and Origin Energy are other examples of organisations setting different surcharges for different types of Visa or Mastercard cards.

Curiously, the ATO only has one tier of AMEX surcharges (and Origin Energy don’t accept AMEX), so I’m not sure why Reward Gateway told me they have two tiers of AMEX surcharges…

    • That's because merchants are charged a higher free to accept premium / platinum cards.

  • I just got the same email from my employer. Reward Gateway must be having a snap sale this week, my guess TGG will pop up on the weekend. I can also confirm I've never seen a transaction fee when using a Westpac Mastercard debit card.

  • I wonder if this will stack with CDC cashback for an extra 2-3%. Can anyone confirm?

    • Wasn't able to add for Singapore cards, not sure about AU card.

    • +1

I’ve bought through rewards gateway with my CDC via before and no cashback. It must be an excluded MCN

Why not just wait a week and get the 10% off ones from Woolworths?

    • +2

Which deal is this referring to?

      • +1

I’m wondering whether they’ve spilled the beans on the next gift card deal at Woolworths… if that’s the case, let’s hope Woolworths’ lawyers don’t get too cranky!

        • +8

The staff at my local store put up the banner a week too early, so blame them.

It's 10% off the HIM cards only. As well as a couple random unrelated (not TCN) cards that didn't interest me.

          • +3

@DawnShadow: In that case, it should be okay to post it here early if you want to do that, since the store itself has already started advertising the deal. That happened for the very first Apple gift card deal in Australia, and no one took the post down.

Anyway, to go back to your original question:

            • Some people (like me) tend to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards when there is a need for them. For example, if you need to get a new computer monitor today (or in the next day or two) and your working from home situation means that holding off for a week is not ideal, this deal would be of interest.

            • It is more convenient to obtain JB Hi-Fi gift cards this way than by TCN gift cards, as you do not need to wait on TCN to send you JB Hi-Fi gift cards. There was actually a problem a few weeks ago where you could not exchange TCN TEEN gift cards for JB Hi-Fi gift cards through the TCN website, even though the website said it was fine. Someone reached out to me and told me it took a couple of days to go through TCN’s support team and get the 10x JB Hi-Fi gift cards they were looking for.

            • You don’t need to leave home and hunt for TCN gift cards at Woolworths in order to get the amount you’re looking for. TCN gift cards disappear fast at my local Woolworths stores whenever there is a 10% off sale, so if you’re looking for a lot of TCN gift cards to help pay for a new MacBook Pro (as an example), good luck! I’m lucky that I have roughly 20 Woolworths stores within a 50km radius of me, so I can go from store-to-store, but if you’re living in a regional location (e.g. Armidale in NSW), you only have one Woolworths in an 80km radius.
            • It is far more convenient (and better for the sanity of the JB Hi-Fi staff) to pay using 1 or 2 large denomination gift cards than 20 or 30 or 81 physical gift cards.
            • There is a chance TCN will shut down the gift card exchange facility for JB Hi-Fi gift cards at any time. This actually happened around November 2021, and it wasn’t available again until late December 2021 or early January 2022. If you were planning to use TCN gift cards online, you had to go into a JB Hi-Fi store to either purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards or the item(s) you wanted, and if you live 100+km from the nearest JB Hi-Fi store, tough luck!

Yes, I know that all the points I’ve raised in response to your question is very situational, but I’m trying to illustrate that a 10% off TCN HIM gift card deal through Woolworths is not ideal for everyone.

            • +1

@WookieMonster: Well put, thanks for the thorough explanation. I, too, prefer to buy eGift Cards through the Smart Spending app that Reward Gateway provides. The transaction goes through on the spot and the cards are available immediately. That alone is worth it.

          • @DawnShadow: We must be neighbours!

            • @CommuterPolluter: Nope, I’m in a different state! Woolworths just has some very competent employees ;)

"Prepaid gift cards do not support 3D Secure, so they will be blocked by the payment processor. "

Who ever said this? My prepaid Visa card supports 3D Secure

    • The Reward Gateway team told me that.

Keep in mind that my remark in the deal description was in regards to prepaid gift cards, which is a subset of prepaid cards.

I have a prepaid Mastercard that supports 3D Secure, and it works fine with Reward Gateway, as it passes the 3D Secure checks. However, I have tried multiple prepaid gift cards on Reward Gateway in the last few months and they all failed the 3D Secure check:

      • OnlyONE Visa gift card
      • Coles Gift Mastercard
      • Vanilla Visa gift card
    • +1

Not if you wanted a specific amount like $88

      • ahhh fair enough

    • +2

      It is better if:

      • You only need a maximum of ten Ultimate gift cards. (I know I wrote in my post for the BIG W deal that you may be able to get more than ten Ultimate gift cards, but Everyday Rewards may patched that “loophole” by now.)

      • You have a BIG W store near you with the gift cards you want in stock. Not everyone lives near a BIG W… For example, the BIG W website shows that there are only three BIG W stores in Tasmania, and they’re all in Hobart! If you live in northern Tasmania, do you want to drive 3+ hours to get Ultimate gift cards (and be prepared to be disappointed, because Ultimate gift cards may have sold out by the time you get there)?

      • You will spend money at Woolworths, BIG W or BWS or a number of EG / Caltex Woolworths locations in the future, or you’re happy to have the Everyday Rewards points converted into Qantas points. Some people prefer an upfront discount than bonus rewards points, which is a major reason I actually posted this deal.

      • You are happy to go into a JB Hi-Fi store to redeem multiple Ultimate gift cards, or you only want to redeem one gift card on the JB Hi-Fi website. JB Hi-Fi gift cards are currently not on Ultimate gift card’s gift card exchange facility, and there is no guarantee you can purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards on the JB Hi-Fi website using Ultimate gift cards, as JB Hi-Fi gift cards are randomly cancelling some of these orders. If you live 100+ km from the nearest JB Hi-Fi store but have a BIG W store in town (e.g. Armidale in NSW), the BIG W deal has very limited appeal.

  • Are JB Hi-Fi gift cards allowed to pay for apple products such as iPhone?

    • +1

      Why wouldn't they be allowed?

      • +1

Because they’re probably concerned that Apple is considered an Agency Product, and according to clause 4 of the JB Hi-Fi gift card terms and conditions, you cannot redeem JB Hi-Fi gift cards on Agency Products (e.g. Miele, Asko).

        • Nothing in the terms and condition of purchase of the gift card

          • @stevtom27: Yep, there’s nothing to specifically say that Apple is excluded. I was just pointing out there could be potentially be some doubt in some people’s mind because of clause 4.

JB Hi-Fi would have to specifically call out any excluded brands or products in the terms and conditions anyway (which they found out the hard way…).

    • +1

it is allowed. I used last week for a iphone purchase.

  • +2

Thanks, bought 1350 dollars worth of cards. Now waiting for the 10% off Macbook Air offer to snap one.

    • Transaction fees will vary depending on the type of card used to complete the transaction. The feedback I have been given by their support team is as follows:
MasterCard or Visa debit card: 0%
Standard MasterCard or Visa credit card: 0%

I have made a couple of purchases through HN in last few months ( I know, but was only option at the time) and purchased HN giftcards to pay for items in store via Rewards Gateway thst I have access to via my employer. Using Visa and Mastercard I have been charged a surcharge on both occasions.

      • I buy gift cards through Rewards Gateway pretty much every week for Coles, Priceline, etc. And have never been charged a surcharge. I am with ING.

        • Thanks. I think it is due to my employer perhaps? They are a small business.

          • @nepalesesquirrel: Potentially?

I know that Reward Gateway sets different limits for the amount you can spend on gift cards, depending on the employer. For example, if I ordered a JB Hi-Fi gift card now, I can only order a maximum of $300 on the second and third JB Hi-Fi gift card orders for the rest of today. However, I know some other employers do not have the same restrictions on the second and third gift card orders.

  • If you're using a credit card to pay for shopping vouchers or cards on (my gateway name), you may be charged a fee for the transaction. The charge will be displayed to you at the checkout before you complete your purchase, so you will be able to decide if you want to proceed or not. Where possible we remove this fee.
Depending on the type of credit card you use the fee will be different. We recommend using a standard debit or credit card, rather than Amex or Premium Cards.
The fee applied on credit cards is equal to or less than the fee that we are charged by the card processors.
We would love to be able to waive this fee but it is applied by the processors and not by us. Most of our shopping discounts are around 5% - 20%, so the credit card fee should not eat into it significantly. To help you save further we offer free delivery on all vouchers.

Blurb on my reward gateway FAQ's section.

  • I have never seen a merchant differentiate between standard and premium Amex. I assume the fee-free cards are the ‘standard’ ones?

Edit: I’ve bought things from RG before on my Qantas Ultimate and Platinum cards which attracted the 3% fee.

    • +1

I added my Qantas Discovery once, and it wanted to charge a 1.5% fee.
