Kinda surprised that it can be shipped to NZ. Not worth it but interesting.

    $100 off Series X next?

    • +4

      Lmao no

    • +1

I’d be happy if PS5 and Series X could be had in the first place. Perhaps the units that were once destined for Russia will help supply elsewhere. But I guess that’s quite unlikely.

      • I managed to pick up a Series X up from my local JB Hifi yesterday, I called them a week ago to put my name on their wait list. Full price of course, until there is excess stock sitting on shelves waiting to be sold there is no need for any retailer to give a discount.

        • +1

pick up a Series X on release day from Microsoft pre-order with $30 cash back off VIA Cashrewards :) .. pretty happy with that.

  • +11

I got a Series x id say if you can afford the extra cost it is well worth the better model

    • +5

really depends on your use case. I have both, the series S is fantastic for travelling. I take that when visiting parents or travelling down the coast and have it hooked up to spare TV when not travelling, it is perfect device for that.

      • +2

The Series X is somewhat better at performance then the Series S but if that doesnt 'phase you' and you just want to play games the big issue i have with the Series S is the very limited 'storage' - I think it has 500gb opposed to 1tb the Series X has you lose around 150-200gb just for the operating system thus you can download 3-4 games and thats it on the Series S - we dont have the best internet here in Australia so you get bonged down downloads and deleted games contently

Otherwise You will probably need to spend ~$200 to buy a SSD to make up for the lack of storage the Series S has meaning you might as well just got a Series X

I agree the Series S small and portable so if you travel a lot then it has that added advantage but i'd say most people plug their console to their TV and leave it their until they replace it with the next Gen Console.

        • be nice if more storage and more performance, but for the games I use it for it is more than adequate, I also have the external storage as well but I find I don't need that for my Series S.

        • I bought the S and sold it shortly after because I found it limiting and annoying that I could only have a few games installed on it. I have a family so the more games the better. I think I have a hell of a lot of games installed on my Switch with increased storage and it’s great.

    • If you can get one, sure. The Series X is great, the only caveat being that it’s nominal performance advantage over the PS5 does rarely show and is paradoxically often reversed. Like Elden Ring runs 10 fps or so faster on PS5. Not sure why that is.

      • Well thats the real issue with next gen - can you get one its been 18 months since they released and they are still being thrashed by scalpers

        • Just don't buy one then. It's not like there are all that many games that are next-gen only or that look all that much better compared with last-gen consoles.

          • @maxbon: Just finished Halo Infinite which 'comes with' game pass probably the best Halo i have ever played and one of the best FPS i have ever played.

It probably wont be on Game Pass forever the game RRP at around $90 so if you are a fan of a franchise it is pretty good value as you can get the 1st month of game pass for $1

            • @Trying2SaveABuck: Halo Infinite probably will forever be on Game Pass as it’s a Microsoft published game. The majority of their games are permanent fixtures on the service.

  • -2

If I hook two of these together will it be as powerful as one Xbox X ?

    • si

    • +1

Brings back memories of the sega 32x

  • +3

yeah not worth it get the Xbox series X.

    • +1

Depends on the use case, I have an X and want the S for the kids so we can game together, no point wasting money on an X when their TV isnt 4k, HDR etc.

      • +2

physical games have always been proven to be cheaper historically than digital games. S model you are locked into just the xbox store. where is xbox series x will work out cheaper in the long run with cheap physical games caused by competition from many retailers.

        • Yeah, although you could share a gamepass across both consoles for the kids and self right?

          • @buckster: gamepass is good but it has its limits you won;t get all games. New or old. when you find a game that isn't on game pass you going to end up buying one, if you are it might as well be physical so you can trade it back for another one when your finished.

            • @kungfuman: That's true, but for a kid who might be pretty fickle with their choices or flick between games quickly? I agree that physical media is the way to go, although this would as WhiteEvo mentioned be a pretty suitable option for kids who might want to play the same game as them simultaneously - digital then means you only need one copy instead of two separate discs.

  • Why they went with 500gb instead of 750gb is beyond me. I've a Series X (which my kid uses) and an old Xbox one first edition. I see no reason to upgrade to this really from my unit.

    • because if they did that it would be more expensive. they want ot make the S model cheap they they have to make sure they put the cheapest components in it.

  • -1

Why would I get this if I have an Xbox One X already

    • +2

If you needed an extra console for a partner/kid to use so you get more game time?

    • great for travelling, spare TV, for kids etc.

    • Xbox One X

Because despite what the specs may say on paper, real world performance is better on the Series S than the One X.

That and the One X is last gen and there's starting to be games that are exclusive to current gen, ie. there are games you can only play on the Series S, not the One X.

      • +4

Some reasons / excuses to avoid getting Series S (for One X owners):

        • Microsoft locking Series S to operate in One/One S backward compatibility mode.
        • Expensive CFastExpress storage: need Micro$oft to stop that annoying SSD whitelist (so we can get a third party adapter with an NVMe SSD of our choice).
        • No UHD blu ray player (if someone owns One X, it is likely that person would have bought at least 1 UHD blu-ray).
        • Series X is still a more appropriate upgrade option for One X owner. Even if you think Series S has a GPU that might be a bit better, it feels like a downgrade in a number of areas.
      • Real world performance is DIFFERENT between the Series S and One X. The One X has a more powerful GPU, the Series S has a more powerful CPU.
One X usually aims for up to 4K resolution at 30fps.
Series S mostly aims for around 1080p at 60fps.

    • One X has slow loading times and is very loud.

      • Compared to what?

        • +3

          …compared to the series S?

          • @PurchaseAnxiety: Well, you are talking about QuickResume. Also, I think the very loud comment is when you play a disc version of the game. Thing is with Series S, disc is not an option. One X is generally fairly quiet (when playing digital version of games).

While current gen games will have better support fo Series S, backward compatibility for Series S is still locked to One/One S mode. So, even if we assumed you take full advantage of QuickResume and the limited SSD storage is not an issue, you would end up playing a lot of games via backward compatibility. So, the trade off is quality of life (QuickResume) improvement vs better resolution and/or framerate for older games.

People have mentioned Forza and Halo games, where Series S is disadvantaged (other than QuickResume).

            • +1

@netsurfer: Disc has no real impact on noise for any console since the Xbox One or PS4 as all consoles store the entire game on the storage just the same as if it was downloaded. The disc is just used to do a DRM check but otherwise the games run off internal storage. If modern consoles are noisy it’s probably fans spinning up when the console gets hot.

      • My One X is pretty much whisper quiet…

        • The fans on mine go crazy when I play anything graphically intensive.

      • Wait till you hear how loud my PS5 is running disc games!

    • Don’t. The One X runs games like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon better than the Series S - apart from loading times that is. I’d eventually upgrade to a Series X at one point in your place. Right now, there aren’t all that many games making this worthwhile though.

    • exactly. 100% agree.

  • +9

Still overpriced junk compared to the XSX.

1/3 the GPU power, half the storage, no disk drive and Xbox One games in BC mode only get the One S version not the One X version. This should not exist.

    • And most decent sales you will get the junk on Ebay below $400 stacked .

    • +6

      This should not exist.

It should exist. It just shouldn't be priced so high.

      • +1

Yep it'd be good value as a $300 gamepass machine.

MS will make all the money from the gamepass subscription, anyway.

But until the chip shortage settles down a bit, consoles will stay rare (and semi-alternatives like sanely priced PC GPUs) so I guess they don't need to discount to move units yet.

        • +2

Exactly what I got one for. Used for $300 in marketplace + $145 for 3 years of gamepass from, I think, Eneba.

I'll play exclusives and any third party entries on gamepass. Anything else on the PS5.

          • @Alan Fartridge: Hmm I guess there'd be some deals buying used from people who bought the Series S and want the X

      • +2

I don't think MS did the industry any favours releasing a significantly crippled "next gen" console regardless of price. You're correct that it shouldn't be priced so high, but in reality if they wanted a cheaper option what Sony did was much better - a full power digital machine. Reduces number of configurations developers need to build for, and we've seen time and time again that many games fail to live up to the performance promises MS made on the XSS.

        • Yeah I agree. At the current price I prefer Sonys approach. If the Series S was say $100 cheaper than it is maybe I’d feel differently but I feel the price is too close to the Series X to justify the compromises one has to make.

I wish they’d just done what Sony did and ship an X with no drive and lower internal storage, and then in 12-24 months from now shipped a streaming stick for XCloud if they want a super low cost option that could be sold for say $150 to $200 with a controller included. Obviously not everyone has a network connection to support such a device, but I think in general I’d have preferred that approach.

    • Wait are you sure regarding One S version for for bc games? That’s atrocious.

      • Yes, this is the case.

        • Don’t think so

          • +1

@bargainatoraah: Wrong. Series S only gets the One S BC mode.

"It's already been confirmed that the ways in which Series S and Series X handle Xbox One titles varies. Only the Series X will benefit from Xbox One X enhancements to existing games - which typically boils down to resolution boosts, higher quality textures and other graphics-driven effects. Xbox Series S brings its additional horsepower to bear in improving the experience of Xbox One S titles instead. This is more limiting in some respects (a game hard-coded to run at 900p will not run any higher on Series S, for example)"

            https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2020-this-…

    • Don’t think it’s junk, but it’s indeed puzzling that they went backwards from the Xbox One X. Should have combined the One X’ GPU and memory configuration with a more modern CPU and SSD. There’s now a large gap in capability between the Series S ans X.

      • +1

Due to the way the APU is all integrated together, I don't think doing that would be possible.

  • hmmm this or a Nintendo switch which is ACTUALLY portable. I think I will choose a switch if I had to choose over this for portabllity

    • +1

I'd choose waiting for the next gen Switch. You've waited this long.

      • the next gen switch is already released its all the Switch OLED. Nintendo don't do what Sony and Microsoft do because there games are timeless. no one cares about graphics on a switch.

        • the next gen switch is already released its all the Switch OLED.

No. The OLED Switch was a stop gap. Not the Pro (DLSS) that has been rumoured to be in development for a long time and leaked recently with the Nvidia hack.

Nintendo don't do what Sony and Microsoft do

You must be a new Nintendo fan who don't know their history. Nintendo have been doing mid-lifecycle upgrades for decades, long before Sony and Microsoft.

          GameBoy -> GameBoy Color
          DS -> DSi
          3DS -> New 3DS

          • -1

@PainToad: then it won't be called a Switch…… if they do go with a brand new console its always a brand new name.

            • @kungfuman:

              then it won't be called a Switch……

You're basing that on what exactly?

if they do go with a brand new console its always a brand new name.

It's not a brand new console. It's an upgrade to the existing SoC.

Other times Nintendo have made incremental upgrades to their consoles, they've kept the same name.

Game Boy Color, DSI and New 3DS.

Even when they upgraded the Wii to the Wii U (which was meant to be a brand new console), they kept the name.

Not saying they won't use a brand new name, but past history points to they will.

You're stating things as facts when you have zero knowledge about if they are true or not.

Either way, it's the worst time to purchase a Switch imo.

              • -2

@PainToad: history when has Nintento released a brand new console that wasn't a new name?, lets see shall me

                Nintendo (orginally NES)
                Gameboy
                Gameboy Colour
                Gameboy Advance
                DS
                3DS
                Super Nintendo
                Nintendo 64
                Nintendo Gamecube
                Nintendo Wii
                Nintendo Wii U
                Nintendo Switch
                Nintendo Switch lite
                Nintendo Switch OLED.

when they do a whole new console and not an upgrade its a brand new name.

                • @kungfuman:

when they do a whole new console and not an upgrade its a brand new name.

Again, who said it will be a "whole new console"?

                  • -1

@PainToad: next gen to Nintendo is not the same as a sony or micosoft next gen definition they don't do the same things. if you want to compare this to a Nintendo roll out its going to be "whole new" consoles not spec upgrades.

                    • @kungfuman: I didn't say next gen console, I said next gen Switch. ie. the next generation/upgrade version of the Switch.

    • +1

completely different things. + how much do you need to pay to play online with a switch? and super expensive switch games? With this dumber console you can just go xbox cloud sub and play all games online and not worry about specs.

      • -1

With this dumber console you can just go xbox cloud sub and play all games online and not worry about specs.

Paying $449 for a device just to stream is silly. Just use a Xbox One or an Android device if you're just going to use cloud streaming.

        • Why the vote down? Streaming xCloud on an Xbox One or Android TV device will give the exact same experience as using a Xbox Series S to stream xCloud.

      • -2

pretty sure you dont' pay between 100 and 150 bucks for new release games like on playstation and xbox, the games are usually between 50 and 80 bucks new release games. and most people that buy switchs use it as a portable device which means YOUR NOT GOING TO HAVE INTERNET to play cloud games when you travel all the time…….. you can't compare a portable console with a dedicated console that has no battery. Switchs are both portable and dedicated the xbox and playstation can't do both they can only remain as one thing. Some of the best games of all time are on Nintendo and will never be on other platforms. too.

    • Depends. Xbox has more mature games, Nintendo the better game library overall. I’d lean towards the Switch, simply because of gems like Breath of the Wild.

      • -4

Nintendo has a better game library overall? LOL. Maybe if you like 2D platform games or shovelware mobile phone games.

        • +1

you do know Nintendo has been around longer before microsoft and sony even existed right?

You do know that nintendo games only are on NINTENDO CONSOLES, and have sold more copies of nintendeo games to beat sales of both micosoft and sony COMBINE over generations.

So leave that BS in the dust you have no clue.

          • -1

@kungfuman: Cool you love kids games, I get it.

            • +1

@sallan75: again if you have ever looked at the current library of games they are hardly kids games.

              • @kungfuman: I just fired up my Switch after a year. It is the same old Nintendo games or small independents. It is chock full of games no one cares about and has next to no big 3rd party support. The original claim was the Switch has a better library, that is clearly horsesh!t. The Xbox has 4 generations or support and is supported by all major developers. The Switch has next to no options in modern RPG's, FP Shooters, strategy, Racing, etc and its online support sucks. Claiming it has a better library is so stupid.

        • I think think you have the Switch confused with the Wii lol

  • +3

Just a reminder that these make a great emulation device (up to GameCube/Wii and some PS2) with zero hacking or modding required.

  • Have one of these and it’s absolutely OK for casual gaming or a smaller TV where resolution doesn’t matter as much. Love the fact that it’s a very small unit and runs very quiet. Great to take with you on holidays.

Best combine it with a game pass subscription. The SSD is a bit small, so you either need to buy one of these expensive proprietary Seagate storage cards or be prepared uninstall/reinstall games a lot.

All up, a decent console that should perhaps be priced a bit lower still.

  • I was umming and ahhing about S vs X for ages and ended up getting an X through Telstra. And I'm so glad I did, 4k looks amazing and the other day I decided on a whim to buy Forza Horizon 1, which would have been impossible to get for the Series S as you can no longer buy it digitally.

  • My 2 cents

bought this on gumtree for $320 locally

Console is great paired with a 144hz 27" full HD IPS monitor. Works well, most games are 1080/60 1440/30 and look great.

Fast, quiet, tiny system and game pass is incredible to be honest, this is coming from someone who was a 'PS fanboy'

My only gripe? 364GB Storage available out of the box? not so fun..

for $449 on this deal? it's decent…. for fairly high end gaming, it's really hard to argue with.

  • +1

I grabbed one on FBM for just shy of $200 (with a EB receipt from Nov 21). I’ve hooked it up to the gaming pass and the kids and I are enjoying it. Younger kids are giving the XBOX Live Arcade games a work out.

A lot more aesthetically pleasing that the PS5 that I can’t work out where to put.

    • Good grab at $200. The guy/gal selling this for $200 is clearly living under a rock!

      • Agreed. I initially thought it was a scam and took a risk on a 20min drive. Even came with the box and inserts. Never played it apparently.
