throwback to when people were buying 10gb 3080s for this price late last year

    • 🙃

    • +1

i hear ya. i was going to get a 3080ti….i found that if i was willing to go on a waitlist with PLE i was able to get a 3090 for cheaper than a 3080ti…..crazy times.

Before people start battering me that the 3090 isn't worth it for the FPS….i legit utilise the ram capacity for my cad work.

      • Which 3090 at PLE is it? I am interested too :)

        • +1

i ended up with the EVGA 3090 XC3 ultra
at the time i got it for $3k, whilst scorptec was selling the 3080ti of the same card for $3.3k

i was considering the FTW3, but the XC3 had better bang for buck whilst still also meeting my requirements, its also better on space which was crucial for me as mine is in rackmounted case.

  • +2

3080ti for $1800 on sale also if that's a deal or not?

    • +5

Not really, this fella has been $1800 for ages, and it's got a much fatter heatsink.

    • pretty good and the card looks decent as well

These numbers are from the latest Hardware Unboxed 12 game average benchmarks for 2022 (https://youtu.be/oBDFtJ4lR2c?t=463). It doesn't take into consideration Ray Tracing, DLSS, etc I am aware 3k res isn't a thing, but I averaged the 1440p and 4k resolution performance stats. I personally run a 1440p ultrawide, so 3k is about right for me.

I love this, thank you. Great work putting it together like that.

    • +10

Interesting chart. The $$$ per frame is an interesting way to look at it and a depressing reality check

    • +5

This is amazing. Seems the 3080 12gb is the sweet spot for driver support, performance and value.

      • +4

If we can get it for under $1300

        • +1

There will be a period of like a month or so where before the 4000 series is released this year when the 3080's will drop in price, we should see a few specials here on OzBargain. But you have to be lucky, free, and available to click on them as soon as they drop. It happened last time before the 3000 series dropped where there were some really solid deals for the 2060, 2070 and 2080 supers. I mean people were panic selling their used 2080 Ti's from what I remember lol some people got some amazing deals on those too.

          • @ThatsCheap: Or you can wait until after the new hen is released and pick one up 2nd hand.

      • The 10gb model is probably better if you can get it for closer to $1k (lowest was 1079 I think?)

    • +7

Always appreciate this data, wish we could award you Reddit-style trophies or flair on Ozb.

      • +3

        Please never implement that.

    • +5

      I like the LOL part.

    • +1

Looks like about $100 per GB of VRAM is a good deal for RTX 3070/3080/3090

    • THE LOL got me :'(

    • Someone needs to put up a website with this data, but update it once a week.

      • +2

No one will check it IMO. I post in almost all bargains for gpus higher than a 3060 so you can find the latest version posted often with the new deal bolded. I need to remove the old afterpay deal bargains from the table though as they are old news now.

    • Thank you! Wondering if you could include the 6600? I think HU recently said that was the best value per frame.

      • +1

For some reason they don’t include the performance results in their video I linked or others. I definitely would otherwise.

        • Ohh yeah, perhaps they might in a future video. Will be interesting to see how that one stacks up. Thank you again, excellent comment!

          • +1

@Zylam Marex: Actually their latest video where they compare the cards it looks like they have included models they don’t usually and have included everything from the 6500xt upwards in a 6 game average on medium settings. So would we prefer a 12 game average not including the 6600 and 6600xt or a 6 game average including more cards?

            • @rmh: I wouldn't mind a 6 game average one, beyond having a reference point for the lower end cards, it would be interesting to see how the numbers for the 12 game cards stack up when its 6 games.

              • +8

                • @rmh: Sorry i'm not a pc expert by why would anyone pay more for 3080/90 when the Radeon RX 6900 XT out performs both and costs so much less?

                  • +1

@jno: I only ever bought one AMD card and it died within 12 months just using for desktop. Once I took it out the drivers would pop up with an error message every 30 seconds and I couldn't uninstall them. The message didn't popup again if you left it open so I always had this error message on the screen. You could minimise it but my OCD side didn't like it. The whole thing just seemed less polished.

                    • @MikeKulls: oh okay, thanks for sharing! That's a shame then, seems like you get what you pay for i guess

                  • +4

@jno: as MikeKulls mentioned below AMD have had some driver issues in the past, but from what I hear (and experienced) they are mostly a thing of the past now. The big draw cards from Nvidia is the brand and their secret sauce being RTX (proprietary ray tracing) and DLSS. DLSS is basically upscaling technology that allows you to be using a high res display but the GPU only has to render for a lower res and uses some special software using AI to make it fairly indistinguishable from running the res it's emulating. If you combine these two things together it sometimes means you can run something like Cyberpunk 2077 with Ray Tracing (which is hugely GPU demanding) using DLSS and might get better performance than using the AMD equivalent GPU.

Keep in mind DLSS and RTX are only on a limited amount of games though.

AMD is playing a bit of catch up around this sort of tech, but it's getting there and it's future looks promising.

Another thing to keep in mind is the deals are sometimes outliers with a specific card people might not like. For example 6900xt's are generally a lot more expensive then 3080's, but this particular deal might have been a Gigabyte brand card which a lot of people might not like, this wouldn't be reflected in the table unless you follow the links.

                    • @rmh: What don't people like about gigabyte? I have some of theirs and been ok. Not trying to be argumentative, it's a genuine question. I have seen the prices vary wildly between brands and often wondered why.

                      • @MikeKulls: I googled it and appears to be reliability issues and DOAs. I've been lucky so far.

                      • +1

@MikeKulls: we tend to hear more about the bad experiences than the good and I'd be willing to bet there are more gigabyte owners out there than any others (good and bad). I am also an owner of a 5700xt Gigabyte and have zero complaints fwiw.

                    • @rmh: Should be noted though that you can do ray tracing on AMD cards, it's just not as good. You can also use their DLSS equivalent which is… not as good.

                  • @jno: Because the 3090 is twice as profitable as the RX 6900 XT

                    https://www.nicehash.com/profitability-calculator/nvidia-rtx…

                • @rmh: Thank you so much, great work and some good knowledge to refer back to. I'm surprised the 6600 didn't do better.

                • +1

@rmh: Absolute legend, thanks for taking the time to do this

    • +1

Price per fps doesn’t really make sense for gaming, as most rigs will only have one gpu so one like a 3080 although being more expensive per frame than a 3060ti will also have significantly betterperformance than a 3060ti so the 1 dollar or so extra per frame is worth it tbh.

      • In an ideal world every GPU should have the same $ per frame though, i.e. if you want twice the performance, you pay twice the price but the $ per frame stays the same. But of course we are seeing that the higher end the GPU the higher the cost per frame to a point where it's ridiculous for the 3090 and 3090 ti's. If you can think of a metric that better illustrates value on GPU deals compared to others out there I am keen to hear it, genuinely.

        • But it's hardly surprising (or new) that the low to mid tier cards are better value. Going large has always had an extra cost associated with it. Like the previous post says, if you want the extra frames you can't typically just by more with an additional "value" card.

BTW… do love your work, so don't read this wrong.

          • @nitens: nah I agree in the real world the high end always has a premium that's non linear, whether that's gpu, memory, cpu, power supplies, housing, cars, anything.

        • I have a 3080 and I think it is worth the premium, for the performance I get. I can pretty much run 240 fps at 1440p (yes my monitor is 240hz 1440p, yes I can tell the difference) high settings on all fps games.

          • @AMDisDooDoo: but you really cant because eyes dont see anything past 100fps

            • @retaxis: I feel DooDoo might have been waiting for this comment. I agree most people probably can’t, but a general comment that no one can?

              • @rmh: Your eyes might be able to see past 100fps but there is a noticeable difference between 100fps and 240fps, it feels more smooth, the input delay is less, it is easier to aim, so we might not be able to see past 100fps but it still makes a difference. 144 fps looks terrible once you go to 240 you can’t go back.

    • I wonder if it would be better to buy a pair of 3060s than a single 3090? Is SLI still a thing?

  • +3

    Good work Mong.
Appreciate all of your ongoing posts.

    • +3

      My pleasure

      • -4

you need to state that this card is non-LHR.

        • Haha, on the point! BTW, I did not neg you.

          • @John Doh: also got negged a bit down for stating something obvious.

  • -1

$2500 for a gfx? Is this the world we live in now?

    • +34

where have you been the last two years?

      • +12

Cocaine is a hell of a drug

  • LHR?

    • +7

      FHR 3090s werent nerfed

    • non-LHR.

    • +1

got negged when stating the obvious, must be a negger nutjob…

  • +4

Hmm, replace the buggered shockies on my 30 year old celica or buy this instead?

    • +1

This. Will hold its value better than the car unfortunately :(

      • Guess we'll have to wait to see about RTX 4XXX series before confirming that one

      • Shocks can save your life though, get you to work to earn more $$ to buy cards like these…. but i'd rather buy a house instead lol

    • +1

With a 30yo Celica I’d factor in some extra headroom there too

    • 30 yo celica can pickup chicks.

      • +3

Thats depends on the owner of the car as well!

      • Bin chickens

  • +9

A 3090 GPU is simply not as good as a wallet stuffed with $2500 in hard cash, or a 3080 and wallet containing $1000 cash.

  • Hey guys, do you reckon the rtx 3080 will crack 1000 bucks this year and if so, how soon?

    • +1

No, not unless the covid disappears and the chip shortage has no further effect on the GPU market.

      Both of these are unlikely.

I do expect under 1100 is achievable and could be in the next month or 2, time will tell.

      • We've seen the 10gb 3080 at $1079 for a low tier manufacturer.

I'm hoping eofy we can get something a tad better…but this Russian garbage has me worried ¬¬

    • Is that even above MSRP?

    • +1

This year? Definitely. Just hold on for 4 more months till the next gen is released. You wont even need to buy 3080, a 4070 would be a much better option with more features and better performance and lesser power for less than 1000.

      • +2

        4070 under $1k only happens in 2025 lol…just keep HODLing…

        • haha, am eying 4080. Not 4070, whatever the price Its better than current gen for a given frame.

      • I thought it would be more power? In the 400-500 watt range unless you found a more reliable source

        • I cannot find any article that says 4070 more than 350. It's more like 300 Max. 4080 on the other hand is different.

  • -2

i mean considering i cashed out an extra $5k from crypto in dec 2021, time to reinvest in 3 of these and cash out more by dec 2022. rinse and repeat since 2017.

    • With increased energy prices and reduced crypto prices is it still profitable?

      • -1

for me it is since ive been into crypto since 2016, not for someone who is starting from 2020 unless you have the $$$ to back it up

      • free energy if you mine at 'workplace' when everyone was WFH, a bit hard now with people started RTO…

  • Tbh I'd wait for next gen. They're supposed to be coming this year and are rumoured to be a huge leap in performance

    • +3

You are the reason marketing works.

  • -5

This powerful card will be decimated by card < 1K just 4 months away. I am wondering, there are over 47 upvotes, did even 1 person buy this?

    • +1

A card decimating a 3090 would sell like hotcakes at $2k - why would they price it under $1k?

I bought the 3080Ti the other day from Slothtec at midday (in stock, sent not same day, not next day, but 6 days later.). Might have bought this though if I hadn't.

      • -2

That is because next gen cards are almost twice as faster. A 7700XT or a 4070 will be faster (hopefully) than a 3090. And those are mid tiered cards and they wont price it more than 1K. Maybe around 900 is my best bet based on what I have read.

        • I just wonder if the last two years have shown what people are prepared to pay when supply is low.

          • @Janko: The supply went low for several reasons. Mining was the biggest hit that took the market by surprise. Also because of WFH, everyone wanted a new device. Also AMD has to share wafers with XBOX, PS5 CPUs, GPUs, server CPUs. This time the load is much lesser as its just CPUs and higher end MCM cards on 5NM and the lower end cards and 6NM and consoles stay on 7NM. If there is not enough from mining or if miners start selling used cards, I expect the prices to go down much further.

            • +1

@John Doh: WFH doesn't need RTX GPU lol, integrated graphics for citrix suffice.

      • Slothtec lol, hahahaha…

    • I didn't buy this lol, but 4070 wouldn't decimate 3080, maybe just in par or 5% slower. and won't be under $1k.

  • Seems good. In the market for a new rig (when I said rig, I don't mean Crypto mining for clarity) under $5k. Anyone has experience with PC Byte building PC? Are they doing good job? or average or bad job?

    • Perfectly happy with my dec build from them. They did mount the cpu rad on the front instead of on the top, but meh.

  • Crazy time to spend this much on a GPU unless you like burning money.

  • Strange how drop has stopped

    Perhaps EOFY is the time
