Hiver - Where Can You Get Cashback?

Note: It's all over. Cashback will not apply to transactions that settle from 5pm EST Wednesday, 7 September 2022 onwards.

I don't know if this will take off, but I just thought we could pool our efforts to find out what merchants come under the cashback categories for Hiver. I'll try to add them to the post when people confirm.

Feel free to comment below with either confirmed or questions. It would be great if you update if no one answers and you find out.

See deal here if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Finding Merchant code: Once the transaction has settled, click on the transaction and the category will be listed.

You can download your transaction history to help work out if you got all of your expected cashback. Brisdaz has requested Hiver add the Merchant Code to the file to make this easier, if you would like this added you may wish to request this also.

Merchants that work

Hiver have advised BPAY doesn't work for cashback.

Updated T&Cs advise cashback now only applies to Visa purchases (i.e. not eftpos/savings) via mobile payments (e.g. Apple/Google pay), online payments or PayWave. Some merchants, including some Coles stores, route tap and pay through eftpos, but paying through Google/Apple Pay goes through Visa (as long as you don't set it up as eftpos when you add the card to your digital wallet).

Appears to work even when paying through PayPal (does not work for Payin4) with the Hiver card.

I am trying to find merchant codes on other payment sites (westpac cc or direct debit payment) but can't find them next to merchant info and also checked HSBC for payments I have done tap and go, but again, I can't see what MCC they are from either the website when clicking on More Info or the statement. Any ideas how I find this info?

    • It states above that these Visa codes because Hiver card is a Visa.

      Visa's 'Merchant Category Code'

      • I mean on my statements etc to see if they might be the MCCs for this offer. People are saying they check their account and they see what it is coming up as…like "utilities" etc but when I look in my accounts I can't see what category they come up as to know if they will be getting the 5% off for this deal.

        • You need to wait until the pending transaction settles before you can view the MCC on Hiver IB.

  • Has anyone tried buying 7-Eleven gift cards at the city stores that don’t sell petrol to see if it gets the cash back then using the gift card for petrol?

    • It is listed in the OP.

      • Sorry, accidentally downvoted.

Also what I meant is that 7-Eleven city stores with no petrol works with Hiver cb, as stated in op, and 7-Eleven stores with petrol does not work with Hiver cb as stated in op.
So does this mean we can buy gift cards from the 7-Elevens where they work, then spend that said gc at 7-Elevens where they don’t work to get around the no cash back on petrol?

Edit: figured out how to remove downvote

        • If I understand your question correctly, you are buying a 7-11 gift card from Store X to use at a different 7-11 store (Store Y). I'm struggling to see how it would not work? Happy to have someone else clarify.

          • +1

@Charlie Dont Surf: They’re trying to see if the 5% cashback (that works at the non-petrol 7/11’s) will work on gift cards so that the ‘5% off’ gift cards can be used instead at the petrol 7/11’s so they can still effectively get 5% off (just by using discounted gift cards instead of their Hiver card like they can at the non-petrol stores).

Farmer Jacks (WA small supermarkets) correctly coding as 5411 - Grocery Stores, Supermarkets.

  • ELECTRICITY IN A BOX payment eligible for cashback - Utilities - MCC 4900. Paid direct from card.

  • NQR supermarkets (Not Quite Right) in SA transactions are registered as 'Grocery Stores, Supermarkets' in the Hiver app, so should be included in the list. Paid by paywave.

  • anybody know if Optus NBN plans qualify as Telecommunications?

  • Anyone tried Australia Post?

  • Family fresh market in Belmont forum WA is Miscellaneous Food Stores - Convenience Stores and Specialty Markets

    Cheers

  • Anyone faces the problem with a large number of purchases over $1000. Trying to spend over $1000 in coles for gift cards but the transaction cannot go through and it said the card not honour. Have contacted the Hiver bank and wait to see their response. There may be some spending limit on the card.

    • From that thread (yeah, it's a long thread, lol), the default limit with tap per transaction is $500. If inserting the card, it's $1000 (someone said you could ask CS to increase it but I haven't tried). But it'd be easier/quicker just to pay your Coles gift card in 2-3 transactions. I just did by inserting earlier today, less issue

      • Thanks. I will try to separate the payment to pay for it.

    • I also had the same issue, and then was told via the app that I had to call them as my card had been blocked. When I called the fraud team, they said the card wasn’t blocked and I was unable to increase the limit.

I did have one transaction go through at Coles after swiping the card (chip did not work) but it’s come up as ‘Groceries and Supermarkets - Acquirer 600863’. Does anyone know if this is eligible for Cashback? All my other transactions come up with the acquirer code ‘3885’.

      • When I called the fraud team, they said the card wasn’t blocked and I was unable to increase the limit.

LOL! I had the exact same experience. I told them I was only calling as I was asked to by the Hiver rep during my chat. They still hung up on me abruptly.

      • +1

but it’s come up as ‘Groceries and Supermarkets - Acquirer 600863’. Does anyone know if this is eligible for Cashback?

Eftpos transactions come up with the 6 digit acquirer number, it should be fine. My Aldi one that worked, for example, was 560220. It says Commonwealth Bank. 3885 would be Visa I guess.

  • It's a NO for SimCorner (retailer of travel SIM cards) which comes up as Computer Software Stores.

  • +1

Yes for Aldimobile online - "Telecommunication Services"

  • Anyone knows who cashout together with groceries shopping will be classified as?

    • +2

Didn't even think to check until you mentioned it, it was just the card I was using for Coles. $20 of it is cash out
Showing as Groceries and Grocery Stores, Supermarkets. I'll have to wait until next month to confirm if it actually results in cashback.

I assume W/D is withdrawal, but not sure if they've programmed it to not pay cashback.

      • I made a transaction at Coles for the $250 giftcards and I got the same codes as your photo. It’s also listed as a W/D, but I didn’t withdraw any cash… I’m hoping my transaction is still counted towards the cashback offer!

        • +1

Interesting, confirmed it's not specific to cash out. My aldi eftpos one that worked for cashback had no cash out, but also has W/D. I tapped my Mastercard gift card purchase at Coles and it doesn't have W/D, just looks like any other transaction.

I'll just have to see if it works when they do this month's cashback.

          • @Miss B: Interesting for sure! By any chance, did you insert (with the chip), tap or swipe your Aldi transaction with the W/D? I think the one I inserted with the chip might be the W/D, and the swipe has come up the same as my tap transactions. Other than that, I don't know why they're different…

            • @klean-out: I inserted, yeah. I don't think I've swiped any. Did you use credit when you swiped? Maybe it's all eftpos?

      • I assume W/D is withdrawal

My recent ALDI transaction of 31.99 also shows POS W/D (and there was no cash out).
I used the EFTPOS / SAV option.

        Likewise for Coles GC purchases.

        • Did you get cashback for this one?

          • +2

@chintu123: I got cashback for my Aldi one, which I realised also has W/D. There may be something else that happens so they don't pay cashback. I feel like they'd have to have it sorted, but on the other hand, there are often loopholes that they don't realise and later shut it down with these sorts of things. I'd be reluctant to put it in the main post if it works.

            • @Miss B: I am only hoping they pay my fair share and not forgo the whole thing as cashback.

But yah, I will update here whatever happens.

              • +1

@chintu123: I'm sure someone said one of them classifies it as a different MCC when you do cash out, but maybe it's Woolies. I might play around with a Woolies and Aldi one as well to see how it looks, if I get around to going to either this month and remember.

                • +1

@Miss B: POS W/D simply means the transaction was routed through to EFTPOS rather than through the Visa network (aka "least cost routing").

In any case, it does not matter as long as the MCC is eligible. If the MCC changes to an ineligible value due to cash out then you won't get any cashback, obviously.

    • I did Woolies and Aldi and in the list of transactions (without clicking in to the transaction), Woolies and Aldi both show cash out, but Coles doesn't. It's possible somebody is watching us and has fixed it 😒 or Coles aren't doing their transactions properly?

      Woolies/Aldi

      Coles

At the top, Where Coles was showing Groceries, both Aldi and Woolies are showing Not Categorised, where previous transactions have shown as groceries.

      • +1

Actually Aldi/Woolies have updated to Groceries as the category at the top. I forgot to mention, MCC is Grrocery Stores, Supermarkets.

    • +2

It all counted for cash back, including cash out.

      • +1

Wow that's good to know, thanks for the update!

      • Just confirming this is applicable for all three transactions - Aldi, Coles and Woolworths ?

        • It was, but they've updated the T&Cs to say only Visa transactions work now. Also specifically that cash out doesn't. So unlikely to work anymore.

          • +1

@Miss B: Ah did this happen recently ? Is there a way to figure out cash out transactions by them ?

Also, can you pls help me in explaining a bit more when you say Visa transactions ? If i use the Hiver card at supermarkets either by tapping or inserting, will I be eligible for cashback or not ?

            • +3

@SydOzber: Seems to have changed at the start of July. It says the specifically allowed transactions are online payments, digital wallet payments (e.g. Apple/Google Pay) and Paywave. They don't mention inserting and selecting Credit. However, my understanding is supermarkets won't allow cash out if it's a credit transaction anyway.

If you want to be sure, tapping is probably safest and somewhere like Coles tapping with your digital wallet is probably safest as they have been known to route payments made by tapping the physical card through eftpos.

Just be careful with the digital wallet as apparently some allow you to choose Visa or Eftpos when you set it up (I think it's an Apple Pay thing) and you want to make sure it's Visa.

              • @Miss B: Thank you for the detailed explanation. I did miss out on this update, need to ensure its not EFTPOS but Visa only.

              • +1

@Miss B: What's the newest advice for Aldi to avoid their surcharge? Insert the card and choose the Savings option?

                • -1

@Charlie Dont Surf: The Aldi signs in store make it sound like all card transactions carry the surcharge.

                • @Charlie Dont Surf: Doing so may not be eligible for cashback as it’s treated as EFTPOS and not Visa
                  Stand to be corrected

                  • @SydOzber: I have tried Apple Pay with EFTPOS at ALDI (small transaction) to see if using your digital wallet still yields cashback. I guess I will find out next month.
Otherwise, I am sticking with Apple Pay with VISA.
                    Will report back next month.

Can I please double check Woolworths egift card site, I can buy a WISH gift card and get cashback?

One of the comments on page 1 threw me where they said "timhn on 12/05/2022 - 22:31 Paid Wish giftcard online, came up with Grocery Stores, Supermarkets ( MCC : 3885)" - I think it's an error though as they were looking at the wrong thing.

I am planning to login using NSW Seniors to get 5% off WISH gift cards and buy a $500 one to get me by for a while.

    • I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty confident it would work fine for wish. I only bought Woolies because it was a bigger discount than Wish. The Grocery Stores, Supermarkets should be correct, it's just above that all (most?) Visa transactions have 3885 as the Acquirer. So they would have been looking in the correct place, but incorrectly assuming the number was the MCC.

    • Try a little first, if ur not sure. They're taking a couple of days to settle though, so we can see the category. Not sure if we can see any details when it's still pending

      • Yes cannot see while pending.

    • Big W gift card from the site is showing as Grocery Stores, Supermarkets for me, so should be all good.

I tried extel. it shows Computer Programming. MMC 7372 according to the MCC codes directory.

Yes - Boost Mobile - Online recharge via web - "Telecommunication Services"

  • anyone else having issues adding to Google Pay… only verification method is to call the bank

    • Have they still not fixed that? I wouldn't even bother trying to call them, there doesn't seem to be a way to speak to them. If you send them an in app message they should verify it for you.

    • +1

I had the same issue with apple pay - you need to go into hiver app and send them a message and wait till next business day for them to action it…

    • I did on Day 1, but after I had used the card physically a few times the verify-by-calling requirement changed to the usual options. So I'd say the rule of thumb is: don't add to Google Pay immediately.

I will do one direct from the card to see if any difference.
I find it not unusual to be told by operators things that are incorrect either because they do not know the correct info or to just get you off the line. I was told incorrect info about how much I could spend per day without the account locking. They said it would not as long as I did not tap. Guess what it did when I tried to go over $1000.
