Hiver - Where Can You Get Cashback?

Note: It's all over. Cashback will not apply to transactions that settle from 5pm EST Wednesday, 7 September 2022 onwards.

I don't know if this will take off, but I just thought we could pool our efforts to find out what merchants come under the cashback categories for Hiver. I'll try to add them to the post when people confirm.

Feel free to comment below with either confirmed or questions. It would be great if you update if no one answers and you find out.

See deal here if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Finding Merchant code: Once the transaction has settled, click on the transaction and the category will be listed.

You can download your transaction history to help work out if you got all of your expected cashback. Brisdaz has requested Hiver add the Merchant Code to the file to make this easier, if you would like this added you may wish to request this also.

Merchants that work

Hiver have advised BPAY doesn't work for cashback.

Updated T&Cs advise cashback now only applies to Visa purchases (i.e. not eftpos/savings) via mobile payments (e.g. Apple/Google pay), online payments or PayWave. Some merchants, including some Coles stores, route tap and pay through eftpos, but paying through Google/Apple Pay goes through Visa (as long as you don't set it up as eftpos when you add the card to your digital wallet).

Appears to work even when paying through PayPal (does not work for Payin4) with the Hiver card.

      Definitely.

I have been paying Sydney Water and Alinta in advance due as a result of discounted Mastercards (Coles promo).

      • I thought each payment is made for a particular billing number. How did you pay in advance?

        • Just pay on their website.

To the best of my knowledge, it was only Telstra that has (had?) that ridiculous changing payment reference number.

    • +1

Just be sure that Sydney Water is in one of the acceptable merchant categories.

      Alinta Energy certainly is.

  • +1

What’s everyone going to load up on before the cash back promo expires?

For me it will be myki and Woolies gift cards. Maybe 7/11 gift cards for petrol.

    • +1

Same for me, plus putting my utility accounts in credit as suggested above.

    • +1

I will try to pay more in advance to energy bill, not sure if they will keep for next statement or refund.

  • +2

Woolworths 5% discounted e-gift cards via Seniors Card Victoria works.

  • I feel like people like myself killed the offer as 100% of my transactions with Hiver were supermarket transactions which is probably not what they had planned.

    • I myself signed up late June, but looked up Hiver and the deal was posted back in May, so it's been a good 3 months for people to sign up and capitalize on the CB.

Just wonder if there's any Hiver rep lurking here on OzB XD

    • Same. If no cashback I just use my HSBC 2% one.

  • +10

Thanks for your hard work in keeping this thread updated Miss B. Thought we might have had this Hiver promo for a bit longer than this. Disappointing but not unexpected,

Voting for the AGM is coming up soon. Perhaps you may want to vote for an extension?

      • +1

        where can we vote?

      • There is some leg work to be done. At most AGM it's possible to ask questions and maybe put forward a special resolution. However this promotion was likely a loss leader so the writer will have to justify the continuance of this promotion or brand damage due to short notice.

  • Doesn't work at Felix Mobile. Its category is Miscellaneous Specialty Retail.

    • How do you know the category? It doesn't show up in my txn.

      • +3

Once the transaction has settled, click/tap on it and look for Merchant Category (last item) in internet banking or Merchant code (2nd last item) in the app.

  • Seems Woolies is either down or stop accepting Hiver. Last few hours it keeps rejecting my card. :(

    • +1

At a guess, your card has been fraud blocked by Hiver.

in my opinion, Teachers Mutual Bank is overzealous with its fraud blocking.

      See here https://hiver.bank/contact-us/

If the matter is urgent, like your card has been lost or stolen or if you're seeing irregular activity on your account, give us a call on 1800 044 837.

      Good luck!

    • I just did about 10 mins ago twice and working fine. For for third time, its something wrong. A second ago, I got a phone call from Hiver confirming if I made the transaction as they have blocked my card. Now been released again, but have to wait a few minutes before retry. Still not successful…

      • +1

Last time my card was blocked, I need to contact different CS via livechat, until I found someone who understand that the blocking was from Visa, not Hiver. So she escalated to Visa over the phone when we’re on chat and was unblocked after 5 minutes or so. The first 2 CS kept saying they did it on their own system with no effect. Took me days to resolve that :(

    • Samething happened to me yesterday. HIVER blocked my card then called asking more questions than my wife would after a big night out and getting home at 6am..

Why are you buy gift cards?
Are you sending the gift cards to anyone?
Why don't you just shop at woolworths without gift cards?
      Etc

      • +2

Because of the Father's day Promo to get up to 1600 points for buying Wish GC from WW GC online

        • Is that a targeted offer?

    • I just bought a woolworths gift card with my hiver, all went through without any issues

      • Worked with $1,000. Didn’t work with $2,000. Not sure whose fault. All good now.

        • It triggers fraud detection when it’s too big. Lucky they didn’t block ur card

        • I've bought multiple ww $500 cards at their online page since the ozbargain notice that the cashback is ending, no problems.

          • @bdl: Same day? FWIW, there is something about a $2000 limit that can be supposedly be increased but people have reported problems with that.

  • +3

If anyone is stuck for ideas about what to buy, then the OnlyOne Visa Home Improvement DIY & Tradie (sold at Woolies) is an option.

It has no load fee, and can be used on Shopback's site to buy certain gift cards. It usually works for Amazon GC's & when I tried yesterday it also worked for the SuperSwap card. Previously, people had reported that it didn't work for SuperSwap, so YMMV, and there's always a risk that they can change it again so it doesn't work.

    • Are these cards currently on sale anywhere?

      • I saw lots of them in the Parramatta Woolies.

This was the previous deal regarding these cards (the deal is sadly no longer available, but they still have no load fee):

      • +1

I received the email 7 minutes ago, lol. Subject is "Important changes to your Hiver Everyday account"

        • Checked my e-mail after reading your reply and got it too.

      Yes, received this morning

  • Hrm, seems Hiver limited online payment to $1K? Try pay $1K to Alinta didn't work. Changed to $800 went thru OK.

  • +1

So what are people stocking up on or buying before Hiver closes the cashback? The list I've generated from latest comments:

    • eGift cards (either online or in-store at Woolworths/Coles)
    • Crediting Alinta Energy account
    • [VIC] myki card credit
    • 7-Eleven gift cards (from non-7/11 petrol station stores)
    • +1

I am purchasing the Restaurant cards at Coles for 2000 points for $100 plus the Hiver 5%. Plus Electricity and Woolworths GC with the current bonus points offer.

      • Is the bonus points offer for WW GC targeted?

        • Yes, I got an email. It's not great
          - 1000 points when you spend between $150 - $199.99
          - 1400 points when you spend between $200 - $249.99
          - 1600 points when you spend $250 or more
          but ok with the 5%.

Aldi gift cards for those who shop in Aldi

    • +1

I was getting 7/11 gift cards but my card declined when I tried to get 4x $150. Could only get 3 :(

      • I think anything over $500 you have to insert the card into the reader and then input your pin. If you tap and go over $500, it won't work.

        • I tried separate transactions too. there might be a daily tap limit of $500 then. Do inserted transactions count?

          • @archiexyz: I'm not sure sorry, hopefully someone else can answer.

          • +1

@archiexyz: I've heard that daily limit for tap is $500 and insert is $1,000.

        • I have spoken to them about this couple of times. The daily limit is $200 per transaction and $500 per day. Insert limit is the balance in the account. The latter worked for me once but not another time. renarune reported that yesterday they could not spend the $500 tap because they believe one of the transactions they did the day before only cleared on that day and the same thing happened to me yesterday. Discussion on this below. According to Hiver inserting the card and choosing credit/Visa debit qualifies for the bonus (I have sc of the chat) but according to some the recently changed T&C only tap and online counts.

          • @Yola: That's not true. I have tapped $500 in a single transaction in a day, multiple days and all were successful.

            • +1

@TanedaR: This is from the online chat

Paywave transactions are limited to $200 per transaction, with a maximum $500 per day. If you exceed your daily limit, you can still use your card however you will need to insert your card at the terminal, and enter your PIN as opposed to tapping the card. When you insert your card, the limit is whatever funds are available to use in your account.

Seems like a standard spiel. But too often given incorrect information by customer support. Would have saved a lot of time if I did not have to split my transactions. It's all academic now.

              • @Yola: But if they know exactly what they are doing, we won't be able to get 5% off from wish e-gift card online.
In some way we need to thank them for designing the program poorly. LOL

                • +1

@TanedaR: Haha, have to thanks MissB & the other where we work together here to figure out what work for all of us :)

  • +2

No luck on the Coles owned Giftcards.com.au (eg. for this Uber cards deal), unfortunately.

The transaction took quite a while to clear, but seems to have finally come through as COLES GROUP LIMITED - TOORONGA with a merchant code of 5399 - Miscellaneous General Merchandise.

    • Surprised you managed to use your Hiver card- I tried and got an error message so used my Westpac card instead.

      • Yeah me too, even after Hiver Fraud team called me and said they unblocked it, still it wouldn't go through. Sounds like we didn't miss out on anything anyway, thanks sircrumpet.

        • The Hiver fraud team blocked my card a few days ago when I tried to link it to PayPal (😅), so maybe having the fairly recent unlock let it go though?

I had a world of pain trying to get any transactions through Giftcards.com.au for the last deal, but managed to get through without issue this time around.

  • August CB received this morning, looks like spend from and including Sept 1 will be processed next cycle.

  • Hi all

So If I top up myki in the www.ptv.vic.gov.au

    it will work?

    • Yes, it will.

      • After I top up $250 online, it doesn't allow me to do any further………….is there a limit?

        • I topped up $250 and $100 in seperate transactions.

  • +1

Its probably not a problem based on past comments about EFTPOS "Sav" transactions qualifying but I noticed that some miniscule payments I made on PayPal Pay in 4 on another banks card were processed as EFTPOS payments rather than Visa debit as they were only about a fortnight before. I haven't checked yet whether this applies to normal PayPal payments. Assuming it does apply though, it should allow you to be able to immediately check the MCC of minimum payments to some merchants before proceeding with a larger payment. If the larger payment is above some threshold I expect it would be processed as Visa debit anyway and be subject to delayed settlement - remember your transaction needs to settle on or before the 7th. I'd expect the threshold to be in the low 10s but I have no idea. Oh, and avoid using Paypal Pay in 4 as those payments don't qualify for cashback.

    • I haven't checked yet whether this applies to normal PayPal payments.

Well, I tried a normal $10 payment with my Hiver card and that payment is showing as pending so at the moment it looks like regular payments are probably treated differently though it could be the threshold is less than $10 which I doubt. For comparison's sake I also did a $0.01 Pay in 4 payment on my Hiver card but that one's yet to show up in my transaction history or reduce my available balance.

Went to Coles today to buy gift cards and card was declined with the message that I'd exceeded the daily limit. But I hadn't used the card at all today…

Only reason I could think of was maybe the transaction I made yesterday that was settled today counted towards today's limit…? This was the first time that i was trying to make large contactless payments in consecutive days. I did also notice in the app that yesterday's transaction is the only one that doesn't have the [Eff date: …] bit. If this is true, means I can only use the card (maxing out the limit) every second day…?

    • I'd guess you're another victim of Hiver or I suspect really Cuscal fraud controls so you should give Hiver a ring if Cuscal don't call first. I'm surprised that you got a specific message about exceeding the daily limit. The closest specific one I see on Westpac's list is 61 - Exceeds withdrawal amount limits

I did also notice in the app that yesterday's transaction is the only one that doesn't have the [Eff date: …] bit.

That just means the transaction was processed on the same day as it was made. Most likely not a Visa credit transaction as they rarely settle on the same day.

      • Something with cap limit on my purchase today at Coles as well.

Tried buy a $500 GC and got rejected. Dropped down to $400 and all good.

        • Maybe I should've tried a smaller amount as well…

      • That just means the transaction was processed on the same day as it was made.

This transaction happened yesterday, but shows under today without the [Eff Date: …], which is why I thought it might be counting towards today's limit.

        • This transaction happened yesterday, but shows under today without the [Eff Date: …]

Does the expanded transaction detail back that up?

          • @Stingo: That also has today's date for both processed and effective dates.

            • @renarune: Well, that explains the no [Eff Date:] thing. The only thing I can think of was that the store delayed processing your transaction yesterday for some reason but I'm no expert.

Cashback for my card has arrived. This is the one that i have been regularly used since opened in Jun.

Cashback for my partner's card still not in yet. This card is just started using 2 weeks ago.

Has anyone gotten confirmed cashback for inserting the card at Aldi and selecting 'Eftpos' (to avoid card surcharge) for spend in the month of August? I see reports that this worked for spend in July but curious to see if it also worked for August

  • Has anyone checked if Victorian tollways such as Eastlink or CityLink work with Hiver cashback?

  • +1

Just occurred to me, with the cashback ending 5pm on Wednesday, probably safer to have all purchases done by Tues 6/9 as transactions seem to take a day or so to clear? Do they only consider "settled" transactions by 5pm Wed, or as long as the transaction is clocked in before that time it'll still count?

    • Yes, I plan to finish up tomorrow and max out my husband's and mine accounts.

    • correct. I'm planning to pay all the remaining balance to my AGL account tomorrow.

      • Are you guys keeping the account or closing it? haha

        • +1

          Closing it.

          This will reduce account/customer numbers.

Even if I retained the account, it would be inactive with a zero balance and eventually closed.

  • Is it $1000 max per day or transaction?

    • +2

Hiver's own documents and customer service responses are contradictory about the various card, wallet, and account limits.

Not to mention its overzealous fraud blocking.

I am glad this promotion is over so I can ditch this incompetent organisation.

Same applies to the parent bank, Teachers Mutual Bank Limited.

  • +4

Those seeking to maximise the cash back at this late stage should stick with known cash back merchants. It's simply too late to be faffing around with unknowns.

  • +1

Just tried Woolies eGift cards online & it hasn't been working. Tried sending an in-app message - no reply. Called support but the call ended twice…

    • Almost certainly fraud blocked, either by Woolworths or Teachers Mutual/Hiver bank.

There's a number you can phone, see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12615017/redir

      • Yep, tried that phone number but despite whichever option I selected the phone just cut out. I've only used it once today on a small amount for AGL so not sure why it would be blocked?

    • I purchased one about the same time.

      • Yeah they called like 2 hours after & said the card was locked. No explanation as to why

  • Guys two questions about discounted WISH gift cards:

    1. How long does it take for the debit transaction to settle? I only jumped on the GC purchase bandwagon today (it took awhile to get my Hiver card unblocked).
Are we looking at >2 days?

    2. I used the direct option. Has anyone tried paying using PayPal, and if so does the MCC come through correctly after settlement?

    • +1

Yes 1 or 2 days for mine. I have used PayPal and the MCC was correct.

    • +1

PayPal did not work for me via the Giftcard portal. Better to pay with card details to be safe.

      • I hope you at least received a 5% discount on the GCs.
Just out of curiosity what MCC did PayPal report for the Woolies GC transaction?

  • Anyone been successful with purchasing Coles gift cards online?

    • Go to shop and buy physical Cole’s Giftcard’s

      • +1

Thanks. Would love to but unfortunately I am in quarantine, hence looking to buy online.
