Hiver - Where Can You Get Cashback?

Note: It's all over. Cashback will not apply to transactions that settle from 5pm EST Wednesday, 7 September 2022 onwards.

I don't know if this will take off, but I just thought we could pool our efforts to find out what merchants come under the cashback categories for Hiver. I'll try to add them to the post when people confirm.

Feel free to comment below with either confirmed or questions. It would be great if you update if no one answers and you find out.

See deal here if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Finding Merchant code: Once the transaction has settled, click on the transaction and the category will be listed.

You can download your transaction history to help work out if you got all of your expected cashback. Brisdaz has requested Hiver add the Merchant Code to the file to make this easier, if you would like this added you may wish to request this also.

Merchants that work

Hiver have advised BPAY doesn't work for cashback.

Updated T&Cs advise cashback now only applies to Visa purchases (i.e. not eftpos/savings) via mobile payments (e.g. Apple/Google pay), online payments or PayWave. Some merchants, including some Coles stores, route tap and pay through eftpos, but paying through Google/Apple Pay goes through Visa (as long as you don't set it up as eftpos when you add the card to your digital wallet).

Appears to work even when paying through PayPal (does not work for Payin4) with the Hiver card.

  • Paid a bill with Alinta Energy which has come up as
    Source-Visa, Acquirer-3885, Merchant Code: Utilities

Does this mean it wont track/be eligible?

    • +1

Should be all good for cashback. Acquirer is always 3885 for Visa, they just put the name of the Merchant Code. So if it says Utilities it's eligible.

      • thanks, the code not matching the earlier posts got me confused, plus Atlinta being mentioned before as 'working'

Need something to soften energy bills so at least 5% back might help keep the lights on an extra day :)

  • Anyone got a screenshot of what the cashback looks like?

    • It can take a few days for everyone's to come through, it will look like this when it does though.

      • Everyone not paid same day each month?

        • Just received cashback for last month.

          • @timhn: Not yet for me

            • @Poor Ass: Same haven't received mine for June yet.

I got my cashback yesterday .
That’s it for me till next year .

  • Haven't received any CB yet, wonder if anyone with similar timeframes can comment.
Account Opened 14 June 2022. First transaction on 25 June 2022.
When would you expect to see the CB?

    • I received my cashback last month on June 6.

    • No cashback here, either. Account opened 10th June and first purchase at Coles on 23rd June.

    • Ok received. On the 7th July 2022.

  • No cashback for July either.

    • Same… Feels like never get it

      • I just got mine about an hour ago, might be just late for some. Btw, they also send an SMS as "deposit" when they do it, no need to keep checking your app

        • Same here, got sms notification on CB deposit this morning!

Note the update in T&C where CB applies only to Paywave transactions…

          • @Craze: Cashback works on insert and pin too

Tap doesn't work for transactions over $500

I believe it declines transactions over $1000 unless you call up to increase daily limit I think

            • +1

@Poor Ass: Yes I did receive CB on transactions made on insert and pin from June also. What I was trying to flag is with the updated T&C future CB may only apply to Paywave transactions which makes it annoying for bill payments online for example.

              • @Craze: oh? I read through it in early June and it looks unchanged…. it didn't mention pay online or insert either but it worked for now

              • +1

@Craze: The terms say online payments count. They then specify Paywave for in-store transactions (unless using mobile wallets). No change to online bill payments etc, as far as I can see.

                • @bloomer: Ah yes thank you I stand corrected, looks like online payment should work.

            • +1

@Poor Ass: I rang them up and they promised several times that it would work and no need to increase the limit. Well, it did not. Do not believe the chat believe Ozbargain.

              • @Yola: I haven't bought anything over $1k but I know that when I used for over $500 I couldn't tap and needed insert and pin

                • @Poor Ass: Yes they told me as long as I inserted and used pin I could spend all the money in my account. And I did do that but it did not work over $1000.

                  • +1

@Yola: Ya just shows how incompetent some people are

Customer service at an all time low

                    • @Poor Ass: Or maybe that is what they get told to tell customers.

                  • +1

@Yola: If it makes you feel any better, I got told the exact same lies. :)

                • +1

@Poor Ass: The next problem is that they have changed their T&C and inserting a card may not get the cashback.

                  • @Yola: I don't think they changed it… it was always there

but we can just tap over a few goes just in case

CAN CONFIRM IF YOU BUY 7 ELEVEN GIFT CARD AT NON FUEL STORES YOU CAN GET CASH BACK

TIME TO STACK ON THE CHOPPER

  • So I got a lump sum payment today. How do I identify which transactions actually received the cashback? Do direct debits to the debit card attract the cash back?

    • just need to calculate it manually

    • There's no automated way, unfortunately.

The way I check is to log in on a desktop computer at https://ib.hiver.bank, click on your "Everyday Account" > View All Transaction and Account Details.

Open the calculator app on your OS.

From here, click on every transaction from the previous month and check the "Merchant Category". If it is on the list in the OP, add it.

At the end, do * 0.05 and see if this matches your monthly cashback.

This will get tedious very quickly and is only viable if you're not a big spender and/or are single and living on your own. Otherwise the transaction list will be too long and the risk of making a mistake in your calculations increases.

It would be great if an API was available and there could be a program to do the boring stuff for you, but that would be a security risk to any technically illiterate people, even if it was open source.

      • I've done that in first month. Then didn't bother because I only made purchased at those approved one. So far bang on accurate with all the groceries, supermarkets and utilities.

      • I thought Open Banking was compulsory for all ADI (deposit taking institutions) now?

      • +3

Slightly easier if you have a lot of transactions is to go here https://ib.hiver.bank/IB/SignOn/Login.aspx
Login and go to the Everyday account. Select View all Transaction and Account Details. Click Download. Enter 01 Jun 2022 to 30 Jun 2022 and download the CSV you can then use in spreadsheet software.

Delete definite No transactions from the spreadsheet. Use Autosum to calculate the total. Multiply your cashback by 20 and hopefully get the same total. If not, check the less certain ones in the app to confirm correct MCC.

        • +1

I've asked Hiver to put the Merchant Category in the CSV download. Perhaps you can do the same?

          • @brisdaz: @Miss B Can you put this feature request in the description?

  • -1

Do direct debits to the debit card attract the cash back?

I expect they would if they are in one of the normal qualifying categories just the same as on-time online payment I expect. For that matter, I would expect telephone payments would also but not anything where you provide a BSB/Account number.

  • VIC: Marketplace Fresh grocer should work as MCC falls under "Grocery, Supermarkets".

  • In the email I got from Hiver yesterday, it says the limit is $50 a year? Did this change recently?

    1. Hiver Members will earn 5% cash back for every dollar spent (less refunds and excluding cash advances, cash-like transactions, interest charges, fees, credit or debit adjustments) on the following categories: Grocery purchases (classified by Visa's 'Merchant Category Code' as 'grocery stores and supermarkets' MCC 5411), Public transport (classified by Visa's 'Merchant Category Code' as 'commuter transport and ferries' - MCC 4111; 'passenger railways' - MCC 4112; 'bus lines' - MCC 4131) up to a maximum of $50 per calendar year. Cash back will be deposited into the Members Everyday account in the first five days of a new month. This offer may be withdrawn or changed without notice.
    • +2

      Interesting.

Point number 5 under Important Information at the bottom of their website homepage and under "I received 'monthly cashback' in my account. What is this for?" in their FAQ still says $250.

It wouldn't be surprising if they started winding this back at some point. 5% cashback, even restricted to that list of MCCs, is not sustainable long term.

      • Or the "$50" is just a typo that no staff have spotted, given how … smoothly … so many other aspects of this are managed :/

      • $50 would be silly though, you would use it up in 1-2 months.

is 5% for $250 per year really that different to hsbc 2% with no limits though?

        • Can't pay power bills with HSBC.
          I use both.

          • @captbollocks: Yes but in terms of cost to HSBC or Hiver, I don't think its less sustainable for Hiver as $250 is low.

    • wow, haven't got the email, that'd really be a bummer if limited to $50

      • yeah i only signed up maybe a week ago, so am a new member, the email is titled "Hi, get more from the Hive with these simple steps…

    • I got this email around when I signed up in early May

Hiver Members will earn 1% cash back for every dollar spent (less refunds and excluding cash advances, cash-like transactions, interest charges, fees, credit or debit adjustments) on the following categories: Grocery purchases (classified by Visa's 'Merchant Category Code' as 'grocery stores and supermarkets' MCC 5411), Public transport (classified by Visa's 'Merchant Category Code' as 'commuter transport and ferries' - MCC 4111; 'passenger railways' - MCC 4112; 'bus lines' - MCC 4131) up to a maximum of $50 per calendar year. Cash back will be deposited into the Members Everyday account in the first five days of a new month. This offer may be withdrawn or changed without notice.

They appear to have fixed the 1% that we all asked them about, but not the rest of it. The T&Cs on the website should be right I've been getting the 5% and over $50 total cashback despite the email.

      • Do you want what do they mean by an year - is it calendar year or financial year or year since $250 earned last ?

        • +1

          They say Calendar year

  • NSW Happigo Supermarket in Eastwood works as Miscellaneous Food Stores

  • Is Hiver similar to Revolut in that you can top up using a credit card or debit card? Also can you transfer the money to a bank account?

    • No. Hiver is just a normal bank account that gives debit card. And yes, u can transfer in/out as it's a bank account.

      • -1

Can you top up with a credit card like Revolut?
