5x Bonus Points When You Pay with Everyday Pay in Store at Woolworths, WW Metro and BIG W @ Everyday Rewards (App Required)

1281

Everyday Rewards have launched a new payment system called Everyday Pay, where you pay for your purchases using the app pre-loaded with your payment and rewards info, by scanning a QR code at the checkout. They are currently offering 5x Bonus Points (1 regular point and 4 extra points per dollar spent) on all eligible transactions until Sunday June 5 when using Everyday Pay. This offer may be targeted as I had to "boost" this offer in my app.

Terms & Conditions:

  • Offer can be enjoyed multiple times during the promotional period.
  • If eligible for multiple Everyday Rewards points boosters on the same product, only 1 (one) standard Everyday Rewards point can be collected once for all eligible offers, plus the applicable number of additional Everyday Rewards points.
  • Standard Everyday Rewards exclusions apply.

  • can you use this with Scan&Go?

    • I don't think so, because Scan & Go uses the Woolworths app to scan the items, take payment and exit the store whilst Everyday Pay uses the Everyday Rewards app.

      • +2

Not yet, but I'm hoping Everyday Pay will be added to Scan and Go as an option because of the way Everyday Pay handles gift cards automatically.

Edit: replied to wrong comment, whoops, meant to be to modsec802.

      • You don't need to pay with the Woolworths app for Scan&Go. You can pay with a physical credit card on the way out. So there's a chance they could make it work with Everyday Pay too.

        • Kinda defeats the purpose of Scan&Go but you're not wrong…

          • @avoidfullprice: I assume you still scan as you shop, you just pay with a card at the exit instead of scanning the Woolworths app’s QR code.

  • Might be targeted, I had to boost.

  • +6

I don't get, outside of bonus points, why I would do this above tap & go?

    • +20

Makes using discounted gift cards so much easier.

Add the gift cards to your 'wallet' in the rewards app, scan the QR code, and tell the checkout person that you're paying with everyday pay. All done. Even combines multiple gift cards if the balance of one isn't enough to cover the shop.

      • +1

Where do people typically buy their discounted gift cards from?

      • +3

Ok sounds like I should be using this instead of their money app.

        • +7

Absolutely. I used to use the money app. Everyday pay is 1000x easier to use for gift cards.

      • Is it for coles as well or just woolies?

        • -1

Is it for your friendly neighbourhood drug dealer as well, or just woolies?

      • Does it work with a combination of wish and woolworths grocery GC? If I use everyday pay at a woolworths metro for petrol, will it automatically deduct from wish gc?

    • +9

Add your discounted e-gift card to it, don't have to **** around with the gift card and pin at the end. Just scan a QR code at the start. Much simpler and quicker.

    • +2

Agree that besides this bonus points offer the only advantages I see are seamless payments with gift cards (including defaulting to your bank card when your gift card amount reaches $0) and only having to get your phone out once to pay and add your Everyday Rewards card to your transaction (which also includes a digital receipt).

  • Don't see a 5x points offer but can you use gift cards via everyday pay and still get 5x?

    • +2

Don't think so. You need to have the offer so you can "boost" it, then you need to add a bank card before you can add gift cards. You can't use Everyday Pay with only gift cards.

  • +1

I don’t know if I’m too old to understand this technology but I don’t see any meaningful benefit for this over Apple Pay?

    • -2

It is also very insecure compared to Apple Pay.

This thread is a must read: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/651164

      • +8

This is a different redemption process. You have to scan a qr code from the pin pad to authorise the payment. So scanning a reward card barcode isn't enough.

      • Thanks. Just checked and i've been done $30😑

      • -1

        You lost me at Apple

    • +6

Not all banks support Apple / Google / Samsung pay. This will work with those banks.

This makes redeeming gift cards much easier.

    • +4

With Apple Pay, you tap once to add your Everyday Rewards, then tap again to pay with Apple Pay
(whether you're using watch or phone)

With Everyday Pay, you scan the QR code, and confirm which card you want to use (whatever bank card or gift cards you have).

imo Apple Pay is faster if you're paying with Visa/Mastercard/Amex anyway, but Everyday Pay is great if you have gift cards

  • +11

I don’t feel confident adding my card details, recently my $80 Woolworths rewards hacked (got it back after lodging complaint)

    • +5

What I do when I need to provide card details with company I don't 100% trust,
I opened a bank account with Up bank for free and use their debit card as secondary.
I take advantage of their Mastercard debit card, to enjoy Mastercard offers from shopback occasionally.
I only put $5 in there, for card authorization purpose. That limits my potential loss.
When my debit card is charged, I receive an instant push from the Up bank app.
No one can charge me without my notice.
I feel safe with this setting and it's has been running smooth so far.

      • +1

You can also keep your Up card disabled (via the app) until you need to use it.

    • +4

There is a big difference between PCI compliance to store and process credit card data and brute forcing a Woolworths reward number to use the available credit.

    • Me too mate, they spent about $80 of my reward dollars on booze at a BWS 3 states away.
Woolies returned the rewards which was nice. Still garbage though.

    • My $30 Woolworths rewards were stolen as well , also got it back after lodging complaint . And there's actually a news about it.

      https://au.news.yahoo.com/woolworths-shopper-issues-warning-…

  • Must be targeted I didn’t have it in Boosters.

  • +2

ER dollars is a joke, can only pay in multiple of $10 and minimum $10. Cant pay $9.99
Asked their support and they said their system isn't capable lol.

Provided feedback over 4 times in the last 2 years. Nothing changed.

    • and not much security improvement so far, people still get caught

    • +1

Doesn't bother me, seems like anytime I go shopping at Woolies I end up paying for more than $10 anyway…

      • +5

        Should've started with YMMV

Anyway, point is you shouldn't be restricted with your money, be it loyalty dollars. I also endup buying more than $10, like 19.56, 28.50 etc. I have to pay the change on top even though i have enough ER dollars in my account.

That's not the case with flybuys dollars.

        • Oh right, I get your point now, didn't think that way.

        • -2

I think if you have $20 worth of ER dollars and do a $22 shop it will only cost you $2

  • +1

Does anyone know how the payment bank card is ‘used’? Is it a tap & go purchase so that I can still use my HSBC card? Or would it be a normal transaction?

    • +2

My guess it's treated as a normal transaction, similar to ordering something from a website.

    • +1

The bank card is stored in the app.

    • How can it be tap & go when you aren't tapping the card?

      • Im not sure the payment interface, who knows it could be like apple pay?

        • That's still tap and go.
Apple pay is an electronic card using NFC in the phone

    • So the process if I understand is that at checkout, you use app to scan the QR code, so the app know which transaction this is for (transaction ID)

Then on the app, you select which GC or credit card to complete the transaction. The app allows you to pay with split amount.

  • +3

I added a few GCs this morning. System is full of bugs - can't see totals of the GCs and when trying to look at each individual GC get an error 'Something went wrong. Please try again later." Another company that thinks it is OK to release poorly tested software

    • Curious also which gift card it will use first. I have some woolworths only ones and a wish gift card in there too.

      • +7

FAQ says it will use them in the order they were added.

        • Nice, missed that.

    • I added two this afternoon and could see correct balance.

    • No issues seeing the GCs I added.

Does anyone find that Coles rewards are much better than Woolies?

    • +2

I've heard only bad experience from Coles staff (mostly IT professionals)
Not surprised Coles is so behind Woolies in terms of tech / app innovation.
      Btw, no to your question

      • How so? Did they tell you why?

      • Which IT professionals? I have to really doubt that they are even professional in IT.

    • Better offers yes

    • of course Coles is much better. WW is purely a copy-cat.

Coles always have offer every 3-4 days while WW doesn't rarely has offer to spend and earn points. Now they are trying to copy the Coles model with more regular offer instead of just the 4-weeks offer.

Previously WW doesn't even have points reward for spending and when they try to copy Flybuys points rewards it is still so crap, they only gave points for spending over $30 and you don't even get points for the first $30. Then they change it to give the points on the whole lot.

The whole WW Rewards model are pretty much copied from Coles. For those that said Coles are primitive you don't even know what you are talking about.

      • +4

I wish Coles would copy Woolworths and update their payments technology. It's primitive.

        • Except that you have to check balance from the website instead of through the apps. Coles GC is years ahead of WW.

WW only introduce the barcode for their gc only since maybe 2019 and still many of their check-out terminal can't scan it.

Coles has the extra scanners on their checkout terminal from the beginning and this alone already light years ahead of WW.

          • +1

@samehada: Which app automatically updates and displays the remaining (unspent) balance on Coles Gift Cards? I'd love to know.

            • @Charlie Dont Surf: The POS machine @ Coles detects balance (if the purchase amount is bigger than remaining balance) and allows partial payment right after. There is no need to record balance on your own. However, there is another issue by doing so, but it is another topic.

I also find Prezzee has made the Cole eGC balance check much easier in the App. If you have Prezzee/SB spare Swap cards ready in the account, you have no worries about it.

              • @Neoika: Thanks, but I want to be able to see the current balances across a number of gift cards and to be able to do other tracking exercises within a dedicated app. I'm sure samehada will reply soon.

                • +1

@Charlie Dont Surf: Why do you even want to keep the balance on a number of giftcards in the first place. Just use up the balance, you don't even need to know the exact balance to use it with Coles not like the crappy WW system.

                  • +1

@samehada: So if I buy a Coles GC from Shopback, another from Prezzee, oh look there's one from the RAC, wait a minute I've got one more from another source, where do you suggest that I collate these? This was my original question. I'd love to know. It will be helpful.

                    • -1

@Charlie Dont Surf: Google Sheet and Barcode Generator app.

Let me tell you, I do not even need to use my bank card or even credit card. All I need is my phone ;)

Even WW gc can also be kept in Google Sheet and generate barcode with Barcode generator app. I hate the WW Money app barcode.

It is Code-128 from Barcode Generator app.

This is the best app after I have tried so many apps. It is only available on Android though. The way this app lists all the barcode and swipe through to the next one is the best of all the barcode generator app.

                      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blogspot.a…

              • @Neoika: Recently I have encountered an annoying bug at Coles Self checkout machine.

If you don't input the exact balance of the giftcard / Flybuys and let the system trigger that popup asking you to use up the balance, the system do not allow me to use another giftcard/Flybuys to pay for the balance. It gives "Invalid Mix" error and you can only pay using your credit card/Saving Eftpos card.

This has happened a few times to me from different Coles as well so this is not an isolated incident.

      • Previously WW doesn't even have points reward for spending

… except for the fact that Woolworths in Tasmania had a loyalty program before Flybuys even existed.

When the Frequent Shopper Club (FSC) started in the early 1990s (which I think was 1992, which would be two years before Flybuys started), it was rolled out to Purity and Roelf Vos, two supermarket chains owned by Woolworths Group for a number of years. However, when Purity and Roelf Vos were rebranded to Woolworths in 2000 or 2001, Woolworths Group retained FSC in Tasmania, and it survived until Jan 2021.

Under FSC, you earned 1 point per $1 spent, and just before December, each 2000 points in your points balance would be converted into a $20 voucher mailed out to you for you to redeem during the month of December. You also had to sign to verify you were the cardholder before the cashier would even let you redeem the voucher(s). In about 2015 or 2016, Woolworths refreshed FSC so that every 1000 points would be converted into $10 you could redeem during Christmas time. (If you have ever wondered why Bank For Christmas exists as a redemption for Everyday Rewards today, it’s most likely because of FSC.)

If anything, Woolworths in Tasmania were thinking light years ahead when they set up FSC, so it always mystified me when I moved to the mainland why Woolworths Group did not see much point in having a loyalty program in the rest of Australia until many years later.

        • -1

Lol… Tasmania… Not even mainland and that FSC is not even WW. You are talking about a completely different company which is just a small supermarket.

      • You cannot even use GC online at Coles. How is that better?

  • +13

Somehow have a feeling if you hold out on this, later on they may tempt you with 500pts, 1000pts etc for loading your bank card and using this.

    • Maybe but 5x points on all your shops for the next few weeks is a bigger win when you have a big family. It also goes over a month so may get to combine with my 10% insurance discount and 4.8% gift card discount. Stacked to nearly 20%

  • +5

FYI you cannot use Everyday Pay to pay for any gift cards at Woolworths or BIG W, even if you only have a bank card as your payment method in the app, or are purchasing additonal items other than gift cards in the same transaction.

If you try to do this, as soon as you get to the payment screen, you'll eventually get an Item Not Allowed error on the EFTPOS terminal, and you'll need to pay for the gift card(s) another way (i.e. outside of Everyday Pay). I'm not sure why Woolworths Group would set up Everyday Pay like this…

I believe tobacco is the other category of items that cannot be purchased using Everyday Pay.

    • It sounds like an an easy way to stop people paying for gift cards with gift cards.

      • +1

Yep there’s another thread that mentioned it was possible to pay for gift cards with everyday pay early on when it was introduced (last year)

So they probably had to disable the whole option when it detected gc/tobacco to close that loophole

        • +1

That makes sense for gift cards, but it doesn’t make sense for tobacco, since you can use WISH / Woolworths gift cards to pay for tobacco at Woolworths.

      • +1

It sounds like a lazy way to stop people paying for gift cards with gift cards.

My guess is that the developers didn’t have time to figure out a way to have Everyday Pay ignore the gift cards saved in the wallet and instead always charge your bank card when you are purchasing a gift card in store. They probably also decided there was minimal benefit to using Everyday Pay if you’re purchasing gift cards, as you can only use one bank card in a transaction when using Everyday Pay, so there isn’t much difference between tapping a smartphone against an EFTPOS machine and using Everyday Pay in this circumstance.

        • My guess is that the developers didn’t have time to figure out a way to have Everyday Pay ignore the gift cards saved in the wallet and instead always charge your bank card when you are purchasing a gift card in store

          It's a guess but a terrible guess.
You are assuming that people know you aren't able to pay for gift cards with a gift card, and you are assuming that the credit card people add to the wallet always has funds available.

If people don't know you can't use a gift card to pay for a gift card then their credit card will be automatically charged with your 'better' way of doing things. Should someone not have enough money available on their debit credit card scheme card then they could be charged overdraft and other fees.
That makes an even worse experience than an error in the app.

High value gift card transactions also need a staff member to approve them when paying. Forcing payment through the normal checkout process might be too help with this.

          • +3

@spaceflight: Those assumptions are good to call out, but I still think the current system could be better designed, because it is currently not well designed.

For example, Everyday Pay have a pop up message appear on the screen asking whether you want to redeem Everyday Rewards Dollars as soon as you hit Pay Now. It probably isn’t too far of a stretch to have a different pop-up saying “You cannot use gift cards as a payment method in the transaction. Do you want to charge $xxx to your saved bank card?” You make a good point that you shouldn’t suddenly change the default payment method without warning, but a warning can help address that issue.

Failing that, if Everyday Pay still opts to not allow the purchase of gift cards (which is probable), there should at least be a pop-up message that comes up on the screen as soon as you scan a gift card to say “you cannot purchase gift cards using Everyday Pay”, and then give you an option to continue the transaction outside of Everyday Pay or to call over staff to void the gift card that has already been scanned. It would be easier for both customers and staff if you were told before you get to the payment screen that gift cards cannot be purchased through Everyday Pay, rather than the current situation. Trust me, it’s confusing for staff to see a brand new payment method deployed in their stores and not understand why the checkout is spitting out an Item Not Allowed error and then the checkout is stuck on a loading screen and is not giving any other messages to hint why such an error would occur.

High value gift card transactions also need a staff member to approve them when paying. Forcing payment through the normal checkout process might be too help with this.

The most you can pay through Everyday Pay is $1,000 per transaction, so Everyday Pay is not designed for “high-value transactions” anyway (and I don’t think it should be).

You still have to get staff to approve any gift cards scanned in the transaction when you are using Everyday Pay, so staff can still intervene and stop the transaction if they see fit, which is the same situation as if you go through the regular checkout process.

        • Not sure how correct it is but someone on ozbargain has reported during trial phase he has paid for GC using GC added in Everyday Pay.

Everyday Pay was supposed to be launched in Feb but they have kept pushing back until now.

          • @samehada: I'm not sure whether that report was true, because I only joined the Everyday Pay trial two weeks ago. However, it wouldn't surprise me if purchases of gift cards using Woolworths Group gift cards was allowed during the early phases of the trial, because it is an edge case that can be understandably overlooked when you're in the process of setting up a new payment process.

Everyday Pay was actually originally supposed to launch by the end of 2021 and Everyday Pay has been a payment option at my local Woolworths stores since Dec 2021, but its full launch was pushed back to Jan/Feb 2022, before it was pushed back again to "early 2022".

  • Probably targeted. I don't have it in my boost option

  • +2

Woolies are miles ahead of Coles in terms of their tech/payments innovation. Just a shame that their home-brand products aren't nearly as good.

    • I totally agree. The fact you can only redeem Flybuys points in-store for money off by using your physical card in 2022 is ridiculous. And you can't tap your Flybuys card from your phone's digital wallet on the eftpos machine either. Woolies excels with both these tasks (except for the fact Woolies only lets you redeem in $10 increments)

      • +9

Nothing is ridiculous about it. It is more secured than WW crap and you can use it to pay for your partner purchase not just limited to your own one only like WW and not just to the multilple of $10 but for the whole purchase amount.

FB system is much more robust and flexible than WW.
