When I went to look at Aerons the other week in store, the rep mentioned under his breath that the Embody is just a nightmare to clean.

Compressed air only works on dry dust, anything moistened on needs to be wiped off wet, which means painstakingly 'flossing' the entire grid on the back with a damp cloth to clean it.

He also mentioned that they're notorious for getting creaky over time, but I can't verify that. In any case, it demolished any interest I had in an Embody.

  • sturdy enough to carry my life!

    HODL!

  • +2

TIL that there is people in OzBargain looking for deals for ~$2k office chairs.

    • +4

we used to go through $200-400 worth of chairs every 6-12 months, because the arm rests broke or it was too uncomfortable to seat for long hours. while at work, they had these aerons that i could sit for long hours at a time. it was a no-brainer to get exactly the same thing for the home office. that was easily 6 years ago. the chair back then was $1100 though…

with today's price i might have 2nd thoughts.

i paid $450 for SecretLabs Omega 3 years ago and its still AS NEW - $450!!!!

Aeron is one of those buy it for life products. Along with cast iron pans.

      • +2

I read "cast iron pants", without my glasses on.

        • imagine the wizard's confusion, why do you just need iron pants but not shirts?

  • Anyone have review of this chair if they've been using?

    • +2

lol, read the comments mate :)

I have an Aeron for past couple of years, purchased from Living Edge for 1800. I easily spend 7-8+ hours a day on it for WFH/ Gaming and it's the most comfortable thing to sit on in my house. Because of mesh material, chair doesn't retain any body heat and that makes long sitting very comfortable.

Having said that, price is quite a lot. For this much money, you can buy around $800 sit-stand desk from IKEA and Secretlabs Omega for around $750 and still have money left for a nice 4k monitor.

    • +3

Personally I find the seats in my Lamborghini to be more firm and supportive overall, perfect for reading with all those bookshelves in my garage. Plus these lack basic features like the 14-way auto-masseur function in the Bentley — really feels like living in the stone age in comparison. The Herman Millers are also a little slower to get around in, although on the plus side you can get in a good calf workout on the way to the golf course.

But at least they're dirt cheap.

    • I was choosing between Sayl, aeron and embody. I chose Sayl because the plastic frame on the seat of the aeron really digs into me and I slide a lot on mesh seats.
Embody has a very hard seat imo and the demo I sat on creaked like crazy.
Sayl is alright for what it is - I don't love it. I'll upgrade in a couple of years to something else.

Have previously had zody chair and humanscale liberty. The humanscale chair has been my overall favourite.

    • I bought the Aeron 2nd hand cheap out of sheer luck about a month before Covid lockdowns became a thing. Only because my Officeworks computer chair was falling apart and I was sick of crappy chairs. Got it second-hand from Gumtree for about $500 out of an office.

I've sat at my computer nearly 24x7 over the last two years. I've never had back issues (which I did with my previous chair), It's super comfortable, I've never had parts become loose, no parts worn, it doesn't creak or make noises.

$2000 is a bit rich, so I don't know what I'd do if I did need to replace it, because I couldn't go back to a cheap chair

    • Embody owner for seven years. If it somehow spontaneously combusted I would do a bit of Googling to assess the current office chair landscape, but then likely go down the road that day and buy a new Embody at full RRP without a second thought.

    • Embody owner since around 2008/09. apart from having to order new arm rests recently as the padding eventually started to break apart it is perfect and I would buy a replacement embody in a heartbeat.if anything ever happens to it. Prior to this chair I would go through at least 1 or 2 office chairs a year and experienced a lot of back pain from long hours working at my computer, did a lot of research back then and decided to take the gamble and import the new embody not long after it was released. I am truly amazed at the endurance of these chairs, I aint small at 6 foot 4 and 110kg and while it has signs of wear the actual function of the chair and mechanism is still perfect.

  • +30

People regularly spend upwards of 1k on phones, yet balk on 2k office chairs lol. It goes without saying investing in your back is one of the best investments you can make and these chairs will most likely last decades. That being said, the price rise from last year as noted earlier isn't fun to look at!

    • +7

      same with mattresses!

    • +7

people generally don't realise the 2 things that they used the most every single day is the chair and the bed. easily 2/3rds of each day… wild.

      • +2

Plenty of people seem to use their phones for about 2/3rds of each day too.

        • +3

sure. but having a good expensive phone doesn't mean your eyes will thank you for it though.

having a good bed or chair is a big difference to your back & joints.

you still need a place to sit and sleep regardless of phone ownership.

          not exactly apples to apples.

          • @slowmo: I'm not disagreeing with your point re chairs and mattresses, just noting that plenty of dumbarses spend their lives on their phones (which they replace every year or two) too.

I spent about $700 on a proper ergonomic chair a few years back after having random Officeworks trash and looking at Ikea stuff and it's still in great condition and very comfortable, definitely money well spent.

            • @dav3: ah my bad. I thought you were comparing. I am guilty of spending too much time on my phones, lol.

    • +10

A smart man once said to me: never cheap out on anything that separates you from the floor. Mattress, shoes, tyres, chairs, anything else.

      • thats a wise man.

      • -5

if you are buying a expensive high end chair to sit on it for hours a day, you are doing your body more damage. The chair is just a band aid.

        • +5

you are doing your body more damage.

          proof please.

it's well known that you need to take intermittent breaks while sitting, regardless of choice of chairs.

don't conflate poor sitting habits with price of chairs.

        • +1

As with anything, it's a component of a healthy repertoire. Same with standing desks - standing all day long is barely better than sitting all day.

Sit in a well adjusted good chair for a while. Get up and move regularly. Stand for a while occasionally, shift your weight around while you do. Get natural light. Correctly position your peripherals relative to your posture.

    • +1

Just like 2K phones surely there are chairs out there that are more than adequate for your use and back support at a fraction of the cost… Even if that fraction is $700-1k…

      • +1

Yeah, that's called a 2nd hand aeron chair.

      • perhaps there are some, but generally the longevity of the cheaper chairs just isn't there even if they are good for your back and cheaper initially. My Embody chair is about 13 years old and shows no sign of kicking the bucket yet, prior to that I had a range of office chairs costing anything from $100 all the way up to $1000 plus, none lasted more than a year and most were atrocious for my back. Annualised my Embody is cheaper than buying crap chairs from officeworks.

    • -6

its almost as if a 500 dollar chair is good enough,

this chair is good but its really a stylistic choice,

can you please show me a scientific paper that this 2k chair is better than a 300 one i can find?

      • +8

Maybe you can have a look yourself and let us know

      • onus of proof is on the one making that claim.

        • +2

correct, and the claim that needs validating is the "this chair is worth 2k" claim

I don't have a horse in this race btw, that's just how I'm reading this thread and the comments here in general

          • -1

@nzcoops: i didn't claim that though. i got it way cheaper than that.

            mokr was asking about this:

can you please show me a scientific paper that this 2k chair is better than a 300 one i can find?

onus of proof does not work this way. lel.

            • +1

              @slowmo: I didn't claim you claimed that.

I agree with pretty much all you've said on this post (including this thread).

My comment was really just loosely pitched at the royal 'you' negging mokr's comment. To neg his $500 comment and + this $2k chair post, would strong suggest to me that one believes (or, claims) this chair $2k chair offers (non stylistic) value over and above a $500 - as it relates to ergonomics, I'd doubt there is sound evidence to support that 'claim'.

              • @nzcoops: fully agree with that. my bad i took that out of context.

            • +1

@slowmo: The default position is that a chair is a chair. Proof is needed to convince someone why a $2000 one is better than a $300 one.

              • @dotMonkey: no one is claiming that though. i'm observing owners of said $2000 chairs are sharing their experiences.

it's the people who are perhaps behaving a bit too weird and inability to reconcile with the idea that people like their own $2000 chairs over $300 ones that they previously used/owned?

i don't need to be convinced to buy my own chair, nor i need someone to convince me.

it is totally weird for people to be so convinced that their $300 chair is somehow better than others when they have not even owned the $2000 one?

as though, somehow, the quality of materials maxxes out at $500 and anything above that mark is all profit?

the people saying "$300 chair is better than $2000", i've yet to see proof though.

        • +1

Well there are ergonomic standards which my 400 dollar chair complies with

          • +2

            @Stopback:

Well there are ergonomic standards which my 400 dollar chair complies with

Link? Let's see how good your $400 chair is.

          • @Stopback:

            complies

idk about you, but that's the same as saying something is "military grade" in my industry, and it's not a good thing, it just means it meets the bare minimal.

go on, share the links. it costs ~50% of how much i paid for my aeron, i would love to learn more.

    • -1

I think people are more referring to 2K for an office chair on a bargain website, don't think many would consider these bargain prices regardless of quality.

  • +1

Anyone tried the Mirra 2? Seems a bit more reasonable at $1498

    • +1

My old workplace had the Mirra 1 and I've only had limited time with Aeron before. But from memory, the seat is similar as they are both mesh seats but the back of the Mirra is primarily plastic whereas the Aeron is all mesh. Personally I didn't really like the Mirra back as I felt that the plastic was just uncomfortable to me. We had Harworth chairs before changing to Mirras that had a mesh back and that felt more comfortable to me. I think it was because the mesh has a little more flex than the plastic.

    • +5

I have both mirra 2 and Aeron, and I would say Aeron definitely worth the extra. I tried mirra 2, Aeron and embody in their show room before Covid and Aeron is no doubt the most comfortable one. Only purchased mirra 2 because Aeron was out of stock at the time and need a chair to WFH.

    • +2

      I much prefer to Aeron

    • +1

I think the Mirra2 is garbage. My lumbar support broke in the first 6 months and I had one of the arms fall off.

      Comfort-wise I think it's flimsy. I'm 6' 105kg and it's not a comfortable chair for me.

    • Thanks for all the great feedback, will stick to the Aeron.

  • Anyone know of any alternatives to this chair?

    • Costco used to sell an Aeron clone. Not sure if they still have it.

      • I got one from Costo before getting an Aeron, it didn't last long, like 2 years max then the gas lift thing broke. The Aeron is like new after 6 years of daily use.

    • +2

Steelcase leap V2 is a good chair. I purchased it over these two chairs a couple years ago and have no complaints. 10 years warranty, few hundred cheaper and comparable comfort/adjustment/quality. Chairs like this can often be found for a few hundred though from an office liquidation sale since they are frequently bought in large quantities (50+) for offices, varying condition but can often snag a good deal.

      • Agreed. There are so many Aerons on the secondary market at about $500‐$600. Haworth's Zody can also be found for $100 which BTOD classes as a 'tier A chair' for comfort and ergonomics, easily best in class with bang for buck.

  • Ordered the Aeron for $1450 start of 2020 for $1450, right before a price spike. Crazy how much higher it has gone since then.

    • Due to the pandemic I reckon, more and more ppl wfh, and willing to pay for a good chair.

  • +3

Thanks OP, bought 12 of them. Should be great stocking stuffers this chrissy

    • good luck with the socks. the weight of these chairs start from 21kgs..

    • selling it next year for 3k?

      • might be better to stockpile 3090s…. oh wait. lol.

truth be told, i wouldn't be surprised when prices go the other way when everyone is forced to go back to office model as the corporations tries it's hardest to eliminate the wfh practice.

  • +2

Bought Aeron 2nd hand 3 yrs ago, $800.
Try to find one in Gumtree / ebay if you can, money well spent for me.

    • A lot on fb marketplace really expensive now, people selling know how much they're worth and ask for heaps more money now I think.

  • +3

I'm so glad I pulled the trigger on last year's financial sale :) I was considering holding off for the Logitech X Herman Miller model in Australia, that still isn't available…

    • I'm still waiting, but sitting on a Classic Aeron so no rush

  • +2

Setup a search on gumtree / fb marketplace. Herman Miller's and Steelcase come up from time to time for a fraction of the price. I got my Steelcase Leap v2 for $150 on grumtree 2 years ago and still gladly using it today.

    • +4

Damn I'd love to cop a Leap for $150. My sister in law got a bunch of Aeron's for around $400 from some office in Melb that was closing down. Pretty much in perfect condition, just needed a clean.

    • +1

Amazing deal, last I checked on fb marketplace, people asking very for high prices for many of these chairs and not much available. I think everyone gotten used to asking for more, cars, houses, chairs :(

      • +1

They are used to be $500-800 seconds, now all asking for $800-1200

    • Another great buy is the Haworth Zody. A tier A chair in comfort and ergonomics according to BTOD. Supply is plentiful due to their popularity. New ~$1k, second hand ~$100, i use one as my daily

      https://youtu.be/LichtcXPSHg

    • +1

      link a cheaper one then

    • +8

Tell me more about the time machine you're using. I need to head back to January 2021 to fill up my car at $1.15 per litre. Thanks.

    • -1

damnit, petrol prices were 60 cents/ litre last decade. the prices today are rubbish, people should stop buying petrol.

a BLT sandwich costs 20 cents back then, damn youngins and their millennial inflations ruining the good old days… where we sit on wooden planked chairs and breath in asbestos and coal dusts like a real man.

  • -6

    $2K bargain hahaha.

  • +1

Is it suitable everyone? I would like to try first if possible before pull the trigger.
I bought the popular IKEA, I regretted, I wish I could visit the store and have a feel first.

    • +1

No chair is suitable for everyone, go to a showroom try it out.

    • I was able to try most of the HM chairs by visiting the Living Edge store in Perth. I’m guessing other stores around the country should be the same.

    • The Aerons come in 3 sizes, A, B and C. B is suitable for most people but worth making sure

  • +1

I just click in to see how many people willing to fork out so much and I guess I am too poor!

    • +4

We've had Orificeworks and IKEA office chairs, costing between $179 and $399 each with light (pre-pandemic WFH) use in our home. They lasted anywhere up to 2-3 years before the foam collapsed, plastics cracked or faded, stitching started to come loose etc.

Meanwhile, the one Aeron - which we purchased in 2001 as a second-hand unit from the Sydney Olympics asset sell-off (Sydney folk, leave an F in chat if you remember the TV ads) is still going strong 21 years later.

      <Insert appropriate saying here>

      YMMV

  • I have an Aeron and it wasn't for me, followed all the adjustments but always found it terrible for my lower back no matter what, I much prefer the Mirra 2 (switched chairs with partner).

The Aeron may be the original version? I bought it maybe 8 years ago, it's still going strong, only wear is on the arm rests. It's been sat in 10,000hrs+.

Good idea to try them out if possible.

  • +3

Bought. Been waiting for these to go on sale in SA.

  • Bought one last year and now I can confirm it's absolutely worth it. This is the most comfortable chair I've ever laid my ass on and the pain at my lower back spine's gone ever since. Due to my job I have to sit for a long time in front of a computer everyday and this chair saved my ass (actually my waist and spine) totally. I have a Ergohuman elite v2 before Embody but the comfort is comletely at next level. The price is jacking up each year so if you do need one, invest on yourself as soon as you can.

  • +4

I just can't believe for a chair at this price tag, they still charge $60 shipping cost….

  • Does anyone know a good place to get them repaired near Sydney ? My Aeron had the bottom of the gas lift strut come through the base of the chair and I think it's replacing the strut, a couple of washers and the pin that holds it together. But I got quoted almost $600 for the repair which seemed extortionate … So now rather than being a source of joy my Aeron is sitting in the corner of the room taking up space and making me sad.

    • +1

Sell it! The second hand market for these chairs is massive.

    • +1

Did you buy it used? Just buy another used one for $600, no point repairing.

If you bought it new there is like a 20 year warranty on this thing.

      • +1

        It is 12-year

        • +1

Check the warranty. I sware I remember it was 20 year warranty (But maybe it's 10). If it's 20 it should be covered.

      • Average price is more like double that these days

        • Used is 1200 these days? Holy crap lol.

    • +1

How old is it? I assume you tried under warranty?

    • Thanks for the ideas guys

Definitely over a decade old but would be under 15 years, but I have no idea where the receipt would be though, bought it from a place in Alexandria which has long since gone …

Might try reaching out to HM and seeing if they have a record.
