      • maybe I'll wait another year until they figured out to build cars…elon should just buy VW and merge the two

  • -3

Not a bargain, and if it's like the Cybertruck "orders," Elon is just (as usual) playing people for fools and using their money on the short-term money market before finally canceling all the orders.

    • maybe? theres a defined delivery range and demonstrator model ys in person at dealers though

    • Seems like a lot of effort to get $350 off me :-)

And they cancelled the Cybertruck orders in Aus because they have +1 million orders worldwide and they just will not be getting to Aus supplied vehicles within the next 10 years with that demand. So what else could they do?

  • +1

Well, that's my impulse buy of the day. Ain't even lunchtime.

  • Thanks. Bought 100 so Musk can afford to buy Twitter!

    • +2

Man, I used to think he was being ridiculous when he constantly talked about his Mars Colony.

Now I'm hoping it happens as soon as possible, because that means he will no longer exist on this planet. Frankly, that's the best case scenario.

      • We all hope that all the rich (& corrupt) will go to Mars & the planet will happily live ever after ;)

  • I just ozbargained this. Sorry guys.

  • +5

If i ditch my 2006 Honda Civic and invest in the performance model, get solar panels and a battery, I may break even by the time teleportation comes in.

  • -3

$70k+ for a RWD SUV hahahahahaha

How is this a bargain? I'll come back in 5 years when there is more competition and Tesla is forced to price their vehicles more reasonably.

    • +7

But there is competition already and most at priced higher than these….no?

      • +3

The competition's time in market is still very fresh compared to Tesla. As I said, I'll come back in 5 years when the sector has matured and you're no longer paying a premium to be a beta tester.

        • I hate to tell you, but in 5 years time Tesla vehicles will likely be MORE expensive, not less. Maybe in 10-15 years they will have cheaper options, but where is the incentive to sell cars for less when they are selling every car they make, and have a 12 month waiting list despite raising prices (and thats before they start selling the Cybertruck)

    • Compared to a typical AWD SUV that has an on demand AWD system which is working in RWD nearly all of the time.

    • There's already more competition now. Go look and buy whatever you think is a better deal.

      • No there's not.

      • before getting my m3, i actually thought of buying a polestar. its almost comparable. the clincher was the supercharger network, where tesla wins.

  • +10

The RBA needs to raise rates to 20% to stop us OzBargainers from spending. We laugh at the recent measly 25 and 50 basis points with contempt.

    • Good, that should make all these gift card deals useless.

  • +1

How does it work these days with the tesla charging network? Is any of it free? Do you pay per charge/kw?

    • Just like Google pixels, only the OG ones get unlimited charging for free. You have to pay to charge now, I think it was about $35 for a full tank (75kw/h) back in 2019 so higher now.

Some chargers in shops give you maybe 7kw/h for free

    • +2

Tesla destination chargers (the small ones, similar to what people install at home) are free.

Tesla superchargers are 57-60c/kWh. You link a credit card to your Tesla account and it bills automatically. Some earlier owners may have received supercharger credits as part of referral programs but that program isn't active any more (they can still use their credits but no-one can earn new ones).

Some really early owners, 5+ years ago, had unlimited supercharging included as part of their car, but they did pay $150k for the car so… :)

      • Are they still getting unlimited supercharging or it has been removed?

      • So thats why people plug them in when down at the local shopping centre!

      • 60c/kWh makes you want to avoid public chargers altogether. That's back to square one like with petrol-powered cars.

        • +1

It's still half the price of petrol.
And that premium is only for fast chargers which you only use on a roadtrip. Slow chargers are cheaper and the idea is that you leave your garage every morning with a full off-peak home rates charge.
People without home parking with power shouldnt really be prioritising $65k+ electric cars at this stage.

          • @joelmuzz: Yes, agree. Home charging is the way to go. My point is that people shouldn't fall for the hype around Tesla. At least not without looking for alternatives. There is a growing number of other EV makes on the market. And for as long as Tesla's famed "Superchargers" are only meant to be used in exceptional cases, these really aren't a valid argument to favor a Tesla over similarly priced (or sometimes cheaper) EV alternatives.

Elon is a marketing genius. He generates a lot of excitement around the Tesla brand. But only a fraction of this translates into material benefits for Tesla owners. Like Tesla's full self driving technology is largely vaporware at this point. By contrast, their Superchargers are real. But they are expensive. And there aren't all too many of them in Oz. Not to mention that less favorable Tesla characteristics like their infamously poor build quality and expensive prices can haunt prospective Tesla owners.

            • @maxbon:

Not to mention that less favorable Tesla characteristics like their infamously poor build quality and expensive prices can haunt prospective Tesla owners.

Shanghai built Teslas are fine, my MIC Model 3 is just as well built as my wifes 2021 RAV4. The US built ones were not so great, but Aus won't be getting Model 3/Y from there ever again.

As for prices, Tesla are generally the cheapest of the premium EV's. Polestar, IONIQ5, EV6 - they aren't any cheaper, but they certainly are slower. Above them are the Euros with their customary high prices, and below them are the 'cheap' MG/BYD/Leaf mob.

        • +1

You only use them when you need to charge up quickly in the middle of trip. Day to day you charge on a slow charger at home.

And as others have said, it's still half the price of petrol.

  • Can I power this with my ozb eneloops?

  • +2

hopefully people with existing orders for model 3 jump onto the model y, so some of the older model 3 orders can get built quicker

  • I have been waiting for the Y model for ages for Australia, thanks for the news

  • +2

    $74,311

    7+4+3+1+1 = 16
    1*6 = 6

    74311 = 84
    84 = 32
    3
    2 = 6

Numbers are starting to look devilish…

    PS: can't afford it anyways.

  • +1

    Autopilot included in performance?

    • Autopilot

Don't use it if you want to live.

      • +1

I run autopilot 95% of my driving time. Its great.

No, it cannot run completely unsupervised yet, and maybe not ever on this hardware. But it is the best cruise control on the market and is completely safe if you use it as the directions tell you to. If you are an idiot, and ignore ALL the warnings, yes, you will likely crash (but you being removed from the gene pool is probably a good thing for the species :-)

    • +3

Of course, AP included with all models

      • Thought it was extra $10k in lower model

        • +5

Full self driving is $10k extra, and at the moment by self they mean yourself

        • +2

You’re thinking of FSD which is different to autopilot.

    • +1

Yup, but only works at Cabramatta.

    • +1

Don’t forget that “autopilot” is just a middling adaptive cruise control system.

        • says guy who has never used Autopilot
        • I’ve read enough about it from people who’s job it is to drive cars. It’s biggest crime is that you have to manually re-engage the lane guidance every time you turn the wheel.

Even my cheap Skoda will automatically pick back up on lane markings once I change lanes.

          • +1

@tp0: Turn the wheel? Oh you mean a lane change, yes if you want it to steer again you need to re-enable it. Lane departure and prevention are still enabled if that’s what you were referring to.
Autopilot is great, I use it almost all the time, I don’t understand why it gets so much hate from people that havent used it.

            • +1

@bluey47: I've used it extensively and it's nothing special. My partner's Kia does just as good of a job with ACC and lane assist enabled.

              • -1

@cheekymonkey97: Hahahahahahhahahahahh. No it does not "just as good". Its ACC is pretty good at keeping distance from the car in front, but it is nothing like Autopilot that can handle most simple roads and curves really well.

                • @dtpearson:

                  and lane assist enabled.

Easily handles simple roads and curves. So yeh, it's just as good.

                • +1

@dtpearson: I can’t believe Tesla fanboys are this brain dead. Even the base model Toyota Corolla can drive itself down a winding road.

  • +6

Buy one now and sell it when it comes, this is the new PS5

  • This model recently went on fire and locked the occupants inside - https://electrek.co/2022/05/23/tesla-model-y-caught-on-fire-…

    • +4

Don’t look at all other cars then, you will not like the results. I don’t think you would buy a car if you went on failures lol.

    • +3

There are manual door releases in the cars. It did not lock them inside.

      • I think in the panic they forgot and then made this story up to cover it. Also I have noticed in my 3 that only the front doors have a manual release, I can see that being an issue in an accident, I have no idea how if the external handles work without power.

      • -1

Under a tiny cover in the front door. Real practical in a fire / when you're tibia's shattered / your hands are covered in blood and glass.

    • +8

Ozbargain needs to increase the 5 negative vote limit on Tesla threads.

    • +2

Yeah ok so they catch on fire and lock you in, but just think how much they saved on petrol. There's always going to be pros and cons.

      • or just open the door?

    • Was that an optional extra or is this feature included in the base model.
      Interested.

      • Not sure what you are referring to but if you’re asking about the manual door releases, it’s standard.

  • Does it come with a mobile charger?

    • +5

      mobile charger?

      It is a mobile charger.

  • +2

    Telsa haters need not apply

Good luck keeping them out, haha.

I wonder if it's actually their job, for some of them.

    • +8

Hey if an actual bargain for a Tesla gets posted, I’ll have no complaints. This isn’t a bargain, it’s a reasonable competitive price in the Australian market

  • Hadn't realised the self driving part was do expensive - 10k add on wowee.
Anyway, I'd be going with the RWD in blue, with the upgraded wheels and white interior…….if I earnt 200k plus that is!!

    • +3

Most people that buy utes and 4wd that cost as much probably earn less than $100k.

  • When u don’t have manufacturing locally and so everything takes soooo long to make

  • Thanks ordered 20

  • +6

Unfortunately no 7 seater for Aus

  • +5

no 7 seat option which is disappointing

  • The car look "cold", but makes a good a to b weekend taxi for the family.

  • +2

    Will Amazon price match?

  • -4

trash cars lol watch how quickly they become obsolete

    • +1

      ICE cars you mean?

      • Glad that you both agree on nitrogen.

  • -2

Made In China. Just saying this out loud :)

    • +1

Your phone or laptop to post this are made in china as well. Wished in your from German factory but cant really do anything these days

      • -1

All Smartphones are made in Vietnam.

        • +1

          because all smartphones are samsung?
only samsung is the only major one who has factory is Vietnam.
And, not all samsung are made in Vietnam either. e.g. Samsung sold in Korea are made in Korea.
Anyway, I was trying to make a point, which you clearly didn't get.

          • @superbass: Low End Samsungs such as the A series are made in China.

            I did. He's a Hypocrite. ;)

    • +6

Made in Japan was a joke back in 80/90s. Made in Korea was a joke back in 90/00s. The joke is on you now.

    • +2

If i want a tesla, i would get a chinese made one. Models made in the US are plagued by quality and reliability issues, chinese made models on the other hand doesn't have these issues.

      https://electrek.co/2020/08/03/tesla-made-in-china-cars-lead…

Don't downvote comment above, let people who have real concern know abou this, also let people see how much a bigot op is.

      • +1

op may not be a bigot, it maybe a human rights issue. I have a friend that avoids as much Chinese made product as possible, and will buy product from another location where possible.

        • A bigot because they might not like supporting wage slave labour cities?

          • @[Deactivated]: As a mate of mine who works for Apple said, working for $2.50 an hour at Foxconn, is better than working for nothing in a Rice Paddy. ;)

            • @BewareOfThe Dog: I can't even imagine being so far up your own arse that you use that as an excuse to handwave away someone who's actually aware of, and concerned by, their western privilege. A true "let them eat cake" kind of moment.

              • @[Deactivated]: I thought it was Brioche?
It does sound arrogant, but there are probably so many people over there, that rely on selling their crops to feed themselves (like so many countries), or are self-sufficient.
Ironically the same person at Apple that said this worked at JB Hifi for 10+ years, and was Anti-Apple.
He sold me 3 non-IOS mobile phones on contract.
I think it's great that he landed a cushy job, that he enjoys, and rewards him well.
BTW I'm typing this on my Macbook Pro M1, made by Foxconn Employees in China, earning @ $2.20-2.50 per hour.
Correction - The keyboard is a Logitech MX series, made in China, but still using an M1, but the screen is a 31.5" Acer.

              • @[Deactivated]: Between 1959 and 1961, 50 million people died of famine in China. There is worse things that earning $2.50 per hour at Foxconn.
