@cheekymonkey97: You definitely aren't the target market for an EV anyway. Adults are with their full driver's license are, you sound like an insecure P plater.

            • +2

@peternow: As useful as a personal attack from a boomer.

I had a friend take me for a full demo (and I drove, too) in his Tesla, and it melted my brain. It’s easily top 3 cars for life-changing experience.

I think Joe Rogan (sorry) described it best, many years ago: going from an old Porsche to the Tesla, he says everything feels stupid before that, caveman era, wth have we been doing. But the Porsche has life, character, and the hobby of driving remains alive with it. The driver is awake, thinking, creative. It’s an involved experience.
I’d absolutely love a Tesla, but the prices are crazy to me. Maybe for the family car one day - clinical and boring commutes, reminding me how much driving can be a mundane chore. But I’ll stick with my pollution-spewing (ICE) muscle car until I die. It turns every drive into a holiday.

        • What sort of tyre life are you getting?

          • +1

@Grok: Currently at 10k, 7 months old, hope getting 40k out of the stock tyre but that’s optimistic.

  • +5

The coal power plants can't keep up as it is.

    • Liddell and bayswater capacity reduced, as well as others. Agl

      • +1

Tarong is currently supplying 45% of qlds power of the afternoon. That's a lot for a plant that is aged and due to shutdown shortly.

    • Do we have a shortage on coal?

      • +3

Earing plant has a shortage. tarong has used all of its stock pile. There is plenty in the ground it's just not making it to the plants in time.

      • +4

No, but we have a over supply of environmental nuts. Problem is solved on both sides if nuclear power was talked about, but that would be a too cheap and effective fix.

        • I agree. I've worked in lithium mines and coal mines. Both have dozers clearing land non stop. Nuclear would be the ideal solution. Australia will take nuclear waste and export coal for others to burn.

        • +2

I'm pro nuclear, but cost is the issue now. Renewables are just FAR cheaper per GWH produced, even when you need storage (pumped hydro). Nuclear plants are massive $$$$ to build and massive $$$$ to decommission.

        • +1

Some environmental nuts (lie me) prefer nuclear and think we needed it yesterday.

  • Thanks OP, should I sell my 2021 hybrid RAV4 which my dad bought for me outright to upgrade to a Tesla?

  • +3

Due date: whenever tesla feels like

  • is no one else annoyed the price is $150 above the nsw/vic rebate threshold?

  • +4

    Ok let’s do some maf.

Average cost of new SUV ~$45k, while base model Tesla Model Y $74k. That’s $30k extra to fork out.

Assume petrol ICE SUV does average 10L/100km and petrol costs $2/L (most likely will be ~1.25x higher though in the near future), then it costs $20/100km to run it.

Assume Tesla has a 62kWh for the base model and an average range of 500km then it does 12.4kWh/100km and let’s assume average electricity cost is $0.2/kWh, then it costs ~$2.5/100km to run it.

Now. Assuming average yearly distance traveled is 15,000km, then it costs $3000/yr to run a petrol car or $375/yr to run an electric car. So a saving of ~$2500/yr if buying an electric car.

Now, adding average petrol maintenance costs of say ~$500/yr, compared to the minimal costs in an electric car, this then this bumps up the saving to ~$3000/yr.

In order to break even with owing an electric car it would take about 10 years. However, Telstra currently offers warranty for 8 years.

So in other words… same s**t really.

    • +4

Now look at the resale value and wait time between the 2.

    • +3

Your maf is flawed from the start. You can't just compare it with an average of ~$45k whereever that figure comes from. You have to pick a specific similar model from competitors to compare it with. And whether apple-to-apple comparison means a Toyota or Honda or BMW or Merc is another debate and assumption.

      • I wasn’t ripping this figure out of my a**e. I considered several Australian car websites and popularity. So for the sake of it I didn’t bother referencing it and assumed others like yourself would take some effort in cross referencing it them-self before rebutting.

There are assumptions along the way but my maf is not flawed. Majority of popular SUVs are still well under the price of Tesla SUV.

Merc/BMW are premium SUVs and not as popular as CX5, RAV4, Kia or Hyundai. Plus in terms of luxury the premium SUVs are really above Tesla so we’re not comparing apples-with-apples there.

        • +3

Sorry, I swap weekly between a new Mercedes GLE 350, and C300 and Tesla 3 Performance. And the Tesla is just a WAY better vehicle than both the mercs (and its older!). FAR nicer to drive (silent, no gears), far better tech (Tesla UI better than MBUX.

        • +1

Plus in terms of luxury the premium SUVs are really above Tesla so we’re not comparing apples-with-apples there.

That is of a personal opinion. Tesla has positioned themselves as a premium brand and the same can be said, comparing it to Toyota, Mazda, Kia or Hyundai is also not apple-to-apple.
And why not comparing it with other electric SUVs?

Yes your maf is not flawed, I apologise for saying that. It is just that the underlying assumption is unfair.

          • @leiiv: I agree that there is variation in the comparison and it can be deemed somewhat subjective when factoring in what is considered ‘luxury’ and ‘popular’.

I primarily took into consideration the popular brands which people have bought in the last decade and started off there to look at the price points.

The market is shifting and the $-segments of vehicles are getting saturated and overlap into other $-segments and quality/luxury segments.

Overall I still believe Tesla are marketing themselves out of reach for many prospective buyers and even though you may save on petrol it will take 5-10yrs to break even; and this is what I was trying to show, especially when considering warranty period.

On a side note. This break even point in savings also applies to solar panels coupled with batteries. Likewise to break even in electricity cost savings it will take about ~10 years, which is when the warranty runs out on the batteries.

In my opinion it’s important for the individual to pay close attention and weigh up the costs accurately before deciding on the purchase and factor in want vs need.

    • Guessing you are comparing a CX-5 or Rav 4 to MY?

      • Yep. Popular SUV.

    • +1

      Telstra sell cars?

      • +1

Lol stupid phone autocorrect. I guess Apple hates Tesla.

    • +3

Stupid comparison, average suv in model y segment is 80k-90k merc bmw audi lexus.

      • -5

Y is not nowhere not close to a luxury car and does not compete with what you named.

By the way all of them make electric cars that are better than Tesla, even e-Golf or Skoda Enyaq are better quality.

        • Sorry, I swap weekly between a new Mercedes GLE 350, and C300 and Tesla 3 Performance. And the Tesla is just a WAY better vehicle than both the mercs (and its older!). FAR nicer to drive (silent, no gears), far better tech (Tesla UI better than MBUX.

          • -4

@dtpearson: Ok, so you drive poverty class luxury, got it.

          • @dtpearson: Hope I wont miss my v6 growl with Y performance :p

        • +1

When people bash euro cars, they say they are no better than Japanese/korean cars and it's all in the badge but when they bash tesla, euro cars suddenly become prestigious again lol

          • @dji1111111: Nah, japanese and koreans are still better than most of eurotrash, but even that eurotrash is better than tesla.

            • @[Deactivated]: Ok you have stated your opinion lol
Not that anyone really respects it

              • -5

@dji1111111: Facts. Not opinions. And I don't seek or want respect from random retards.

                • @[Deactivated]: The fact that you think that's a fact is also your opinion only. Lol i can see that you are a classy guy. People must think you are funding everyone's tesla purchase the way you get triggered lol

      • You’re comparing this by starting off with the price point of the Tesla car; which is the wrong way.

For example, if we do it you’re way then at this price starting point pretty much all “luxury” vehicles offer all-wheel drive and are still cheaper by about $20k than the Performance Tesla model Y.

Like I said, you’re comparing it the wrong way around.

  • Wondering if the up-votes are a joke?

  • +2

I can’t find a Tesla promo code to enter like ‘welcome10’ or ‘thankyou10’.

    • +1

      Have you tried "HAILELON"?

    • C'mon it's OzBargain, let the geeks have their circle jerk.

  • $∞ cheaper than previous price.

  • Only 71201 in tassie, no stamp duty. Also come 1/7/22 no more 5% duty can save 3445.

    • +1

There is no duty on it now. It's coming from Shanghai, so no further saving.

  • +4

    RRP ≠ deal

  • +1

    Soooooo ugly!

If Mercedes don't bring something cool out, I'm going the Audi E-Tron.

    • And you pay twice as much for an unreliable European car.

      • I have 2 Mercedes now and have had 2 previously.

All completely reliable and better build quality than any Tesla.

People who think they're unreliable either never owned one or can't afford to maintain one.

I assure you, they're very reliable. Plenty of examples of running mercs with over 400,000km on the clock.

        • +1

Mercedes, brake pad + disc replacement are done both at the same time, cost you 3-4 more than an average car, they are worn out twice as fast.
Tyres are expensive and again worn out twice a fast.
Squeaking, suspension issue, DVD break down, I own one, I know, never Mercedes again, people own Merc or BMW don't tell you the truth to protect their investment.
And Yes, I can afford to own one, and let me tell you, Merc owners are dumb mindless throwing money at Mercedes for their hard earn cash, I'm one of them and I feel stupid for owning one, will getting rid of mine soon, once I get my Tesla Model Y.
The only thing is, it has a nice ride, the interior is the best in any car, but not worth it.

          • @kml22: There's a reason European cars change disc and pads at the same time.
They also brake a lot better, more stable and are safer than the average car.

Better power, better handling, safer, more fun, more prestigious, better build quality, better fit and finish, better quality materials, etc.

It's not for everyone though. Some people eat 2 minute noodles and cup-a-soup too.

You can't talk about quality of any description and also talk about buying a Tesla as well…. notoriously poor build…. Check out the EVs coming from Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

        • -3

I have Mercedes Benz and never think of any other vehicle. Quality’s stunning and never had any drama with. Extremely reliable and reasonable in terms of service/maintenance.
Mine’s getting old (2016 model) and again going to replace with another Mercedes Benz.
          :-)

          • -1

@Alit: Lol reasonable? Someone i know got quoted 1k to replace the battery

  • +2

Went to put down my deposit, only to find Tesla is not offering long range in Australia. I guess I will wait for another year.

  • I always wonder how much to charge electric car every night?

    • Look at your off-peak Kw price and times it by 80 basically,
Amber and some others were doing 20c off peak ($8 for 400km), but thats dead now.

    • Free for me have solar panels.

      • +1

Most people drive their car during the day… So how's solar panel going to work, not to mention house battery is so unaffordable now..

  • +1

With this price point I much prefer to buy Mercedes Benz EQA if I want full electric vehicle.

    • Then wait for 8-12 months. I was very close in ordering EQA then I received an email from Tesla. Model Y, for my wife. Very similar to Model X from outside. Little bit small. Cheaper by $15k from EQA. Ordered this one. Delivery in Aug-Nov.

  • Anyone know if i can change name or ABN after I made the deposit?

I'd like to order one now but situation may change in 6 months so it would be nice to be flexible.

    • Once you submit registration information in Tesla account, you can't change them. It is part of the pre delivery process I believe

  • +3

this isn't bad for a price point considering the price of new cars nowadays. you'd be hard pressed to find a fully kitted RAV4 for under 60k. stepping into poverty grade luxury badges you are looking at GLB200 for the same amount of $, which is basically an asthmatic A-class crammed on a stilleto with seats

  • Very very tempting… but I am patiently waiting for a Cybertruck to replace UTE and SUV.
Might invest more in Tesla stock now till they finally release Cybertruck.

    • +1

Lol. That ugly piece of crackhead engineering is not even available for pre-order anymore.

    • Placed my preorder last year. Hopefully will get first batch of delivery to Australia next year.

      • I hate to burst your bubble, but Cybertruck is more than half a decade away. Pre-orders are over a million now. Australia is FAR down the list.

        • That's fine with me too. Maybe the Y long range will be here next year and serving me while waiting for the cybertruck

  • Finally

  • -5

Why are the electricity prices increasing in Australia ? It's because most of the power is generated by fossil fuels. The retards buying electric to go green don't realise the power to charge their cars most probably comes from a much dirtier source : coal.
    Also Elon is a POS.

    • not sure why there are so many retards going on about people buying electric to go green.
I'm sure not everyone is buying one to be green and are more appealed to the new tech, no need to visit petrol station, not being exposed to volatility in fuel prices, already having solar panels in their home, time for them to replace their ageing car and taking that opportunity to go to EV etc…
anti-EV people seem to assume people buy cars for just one reason alone lol (eg. going green or trying to save money on petrol)

  • +1

Wow another high yield investment. Pity I lost everything in Crypto.

    • just hold.. or HODL 😂 it’ll prob bounce back by the time the cyber truck arrives down under 🏝

  • Just going over all these comments makes me sooooo sleepy lol~

  • Don't try this with any other car.

.#FSDBeta handles a complete u turn at a roundabout. 🤯🤯🤯 the Tesla software continues to get better and better. @elonmusk @tesla https://t.co/PI3H3B1F9G

  • Car looks ugly to me. If I'm going to pay $100k for a car, I want it to look nice

  • +3

    Telsa haters need not apply

    Cringe

  • Waste of money

  • -1

70-100k for a car .that's dream world living for me. If people on here pay this sort of money then ozbargains not the site for them. Ludicrous prices. I30 2011 with 90000ks on clock 11k. That was my limit.

    • +4

Tall poppy syndrome is ripe here. This is ozbargain, not povobargain.
The sooner you accept that there are wealthier people out there in the world, the better off you will be.
Don't judge how much other people on things based on your own financial situation.
Of course, people will now try and say everyone buying these cars are buying through finance arrangements. Well, not everyone.

Sick of idiots whinging about expensive products every single time they get posted here just because they eat 2 minute noodle for lunch to save a few bucks

      • +1

There is no bargain to be had here. It's a top end expensive car at rrp. That's not what Oz bargain is about. Join a Tesla forum if you want one.

        • +2

Then say it's not a bargain or is that too non-dramatic for you?
Do you even remember what you wrote? It doesn't look like it.
You did not say a single word about this not being a bargain.
You just had a big whinge about how spending this kind of money for a car is a "dream world living" for you lol
Poor guy can't even get his own story straight lol

        • $70k cars are everywhere these days and certainly not top end. Not even close. Have you been living in a cave?

  • +1

    Bought one thanks

  • -5

$80K ($79,156) Drive Away if you want it in black with induction wheel for a car Made in China that is a LOW riding fake SUV (rear wheel drive) … NOT

Also where is the deal ?? This is just RRP and looks like spam advertising

    • +1

I have a made-in-Germany car, the quality and reliability are awful, maybe back in the old day it's good, but now days, made in Germany is not as good anymore.

      • -1

I have a Made in Germany car and the quality is top notch

  • +3

Waiting for the LR model. RWD is a slug and Performance model is a rip off

  • +1

    Where's the bargain?

  • I'm waiting for the 7 seater in long range to come out.

  • The US CPI came in at 8.6% and oil is pamping to +$120.

    People should prepare for $3.0 p/l and $6.0 p/l by 2030.

Australia is about to get hit by the pain 🚂 not seen since before the zoomers were born.

  • Very tempted. Should I pull the trigger?
I’m only concerned about the build quality issue.

  • Don’t worry, Albo has a plan to produce a plan.

  • Eh? How is this a bargain? Serious question.
