            @Pecan: Conversely, who cars?

I don't need or want one.

Give me a $40k EV that does 0-100 in the same 10 odd seconds as my swift and I'm all aboard.

          • @Pecan:

            0-100km/h under 4 seconds for $105k?

It is 0-60 you need to worry about. Also the time between red lights. No point going 0-100 in an instant if you all you end up is braking and sitting behind the cars in the next set of traffic lights.

        • bit more per month
          finance monkey, dropped

      • Why? It saves me $100 per week in fuel cost, let alone services. It does everything I need it to do, the seat is comfortable and the autopilot is great when you want to use it.
What does a BMW or Merc do other than the badge?

    • No their built quality is $hit, their reliability and therefore the resale is abysmal, they are expensive to service and to fill up. Oh and this "build quality" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1A4WxlbxFM

And to get anywhere near the performance of a Model Y i will have spend almost twice as much and it still wont be as fast.

    • I think you might find that, for ~$70k mark, you can only get entry level of "luxury" BMW / Merc, which won't have the same build quality as the higher tier ones.

      • All this build quality non sense is propagated by the paid out media (print and social) - for e.g. this is Audi's top end SUV —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1A4WxlbxFM

I dont see build quality different from engineering or reliability which germans car are abysmal at. Its not just their high tech highly string sportscars, its even their mainstream cars such as the Passat or Polo or even the Golf.

    • Happy to pay a bit more for the convenience of not having to visit a petrol station.

If you think refuelling a petrol car is more convenient than an electric car…you haven't done your research. And before you say it, yes petrol cars will be easier on those 2 road trips you take per year. The other 361 days, refuelling will be easier with an EV.

    • +1

How is having to go to a petrol station to fill up more convenient than being able to "fill up" anytime you're at home?

      • At least you can get high for free breathing in the fumes and exhausts whilst filling up at the petrol station

    • +2

Because some people want a EV and Tesla makes the best one currently available. Before you write them off, take one for a test drive. I wasn't sold on Tesla's til I drove one, now I don't know why anybody would buy a ICE car anymore.

    • I would have thought so too, but waking up to a "full tank" everyday by taking 5 seconds to plug in at home, rather than taking time out of my day to fill up a petrol station is a lot more convenient on a day to day basis. Agree that it requires more planning for long road trips though.

  • Scotty's missing on some advertising dollars here

  • Just another point whoring post. No deal listed here and is just a fanboi post pointing out RRP.

While this is good information, it’s just that “information” and should have been moved to the forums.

  • Let's see if electric car, in this case: Tesla model Y, worth it.

As a very normal/average personal car user having small/medium vehicle (ex: Mazda cx3, almost equivalent to Tesla SUV model Y?), I pay in average, $100 filling up the tank every fortnight. It works out, say almost $3000 per annum for fuel cost. The vehicle itself costs ~$30K in average making total cost plus maintenance in a 5-Year course around $50K.

Now, if I buy Tesla model Y for say $75K, still am paying $25K more! Please be mindful this is in case I have solar panel at home not paying for charging and car has zero maintenance!

    How do you justify this?

    • +6

That's a terrible way to understand finance.

The fact that you've paid an extra $45k today means you've lost $45k to invest today. Even on simple below average returns of 5% that $45k will be worth $58k in 5 years time.

This car only makes sense if you simple want this car.

      • That's a terrible way to understand finance

You should see the spreadsheet of that Tesla owner in WA. It is hilarious. Here

        • Yeah, trying to work out same numbers but can’t!

      • Correct, it’s even worth, then

    • Mazda cx3, almost equivalent to Tesla SUV model Y?

Not similar to CX3. A review said interior space is comparable to a Sorento. There will be a 7-seater version. You should compare to at least CX8/9.

      • Yeah agree, cx8 is a fair one. But still costs less than $75k paid today for model Y (even worth considering @plmko ‘s point)

The fact is whatever vehicle with electric badge jumps in price by ~20-30%. I understand it should come with less maintenance cost and saving on fuel by charging instead (if electricity cost remains around the same) but upfront cost is just ridiculously high!

    • -2

Okay so take a bigger than mid size battery electric SUV, compare it to the smallest ice suv available and then come up with imaginary numbers to support your argument.

Mind doing a cost, resale, running cost, servicing performance and tech comparison between Model Y and X3/Q5/GLC or even CX9/Sorrento.

      • Maybe Sorrento or cx9 but definitely not Mercedes, BMW, or Audi. Tesla has nothing to say in quality and finish compared to German made ones.

  • Anyone got any discount codes for this? Cashback app?

  • -1

    Bargain! Just ordered 3!

  • Wonder why so many are easily offended by a car. If you like it go for it, if not move on bro.

Just to stoke the flames a bit. Your opinion is probably outdated and obsolete just like your car will be pretty soon.

    Thank you, next.

  • +2

Can we just post anything on ozbargain now, at RRP? I wonder why the mods are letting this stay up .? ;)

    • Only if its a bargain. Not all rrp are created equal.

  • +2

    Nil bargain - forum post

    • I did, not knowing this was here, and had the post removed.

      This is more fun. ;)

  • +1

Needs to drop by half before i'll bat an eye in its direction.

  • +1

Nice.. but holly cow they are expensive…

Definitively unaffordable for the average Australian worker (Remember median average wage is around the $65K mark or thereabouts)

They will have to stick with their ICE vehicles .. which is not a good outcome as we need more people transitioning to EVs …

    • +2

People are excited here because the typical OzB'er is a ~33yo IT tech bro on a minimum of $120k. So they see this as 'affordable'.

      • I feel personally attacked, and I'm 37…

  • +1

This another capital raising exercise so the muskrat can buy his own media platform? Probs. Defs ain’t no deal and true OzBers would avoid until sale price available or they get a good deal on elec/incentives to install solar.

  • +3

Honestly I upvote as a joke but have you seen car prices these days on the lots?

Tesla didn't bump up their prices and as a result they're becoming more affordable. Not that a 100k is affordable, just market is insane.

  • I don't get the continuing hype around Model Y? (I was looking forward to the Y's launch as I was in the market for an EV). Most reviews from UK suggests that the Y is not a good family car due to its harsh ride and average handling. Objectively, are people just voting up this deal because of performance (straight line)? As most negative voters have said, the price of the Y is obviously not a deal by itself.

Then why are people upvoting? Am I missing something here? Should I actually put an order in for the Y?

    • +1

Harsh ride doesnt make for average handling. Its handling is one of the best in class. Besides, I would like to experience it personally rather than go my these so called media review. To them germans cars are the best thing to have happened to the world and we all know what they really are.

      • Of course I'll go for test drive when it becomes available. I don't think the reviewers' words are gospels, but if enough of them point out the harsh ride and average handling, it is a notable thing. Generally UK reviews are on worse roads compared to Europe, so if it is harsh in the UK, it'll be usually worse in Australia.

Also the average handling is despite the harsh ride, so it makes me think that the engineers tried too hard to make the car sporty (better handling) at the expense of comfort. The result is worst of both worlds (harsh ride and average handling). IMO for a family SUV, the engineers got the balance wrong if in fact that is the case.

        • +1

IMO for a family SUV, the engineers got the balance wrong if in fact that is the case.

When they say family, they meant Vin Diesel "family"

        • I’m in the uk. The roads suck much worse then aus haha

    • are people just voting up this deal because of performance (straight line)

These are the people that walk very fast in straight lines then decelerate very quickly then do a 90 degree turn and accelerate very quickly like their feet are moving faster than their head.

Been in a Tesla Model 3. Yes it is mash your guts acceleration and mash your guts deceleration but could I mash my guts potentially 10 times a day to and from work to make my $25k working?

      • If you make $25k a day, I think the Tesla can sell you a more expensive car! :)

  • Why anyone would buy a piece of shit like this from American Oligarch Supreme is beyond me.

  • +5

still not a deal, welcome to OzAdvertising

  • How do you charge these cars?
Are there plenty of charging stations in the suburbs?

    • +1

      Eneloops

    • Plug it into normal 240v socket overnight.

    • It has a 480?km range. Still, many people may not have the ability to charge at home, safely and securely.

  • +2

Might cancel my model 3 order with 9 month waiting and get this isntead. Anyway to avoid losing $350 order fee i already paid for model 3?

    • Give them a call, they may swap the order.

      They are swamped with orders.

    • +2

Better cancel altogether. There will be much better VALUE EV from China.
With the work from home, I don't need to overcapitalise on fast diminishing show-offs.
I pay more attention to skills & social experience.
For ethical reasons, I avoid buying from bullies.

      • Hell yeah brother

      • +3

There will be much better VALUE EV from China…
For ethical reasons, I avoid buying from bullies.

So CCP controlled companies are more ethical ;-)

  • Want to see some government rebates and long range model. Long range seems to be missing??

  • Upvote for ATTO3, much better than this car

    • What makes an ATTO 3 better than a $TSLA?

      The software, hardware or both?

      • -1

Better price, similar range, better equipment. similar performance.

        • +4

Much less performance, way slower DC charging, ugly interior.

Not saying it's a bad car for the money, but you get what you pay for.

          • @loksmack: Much less performance - 6.9s 0-100 km/h vs 7.3 s 0-100 km/h

            • @abuseyourdna:

              6.9s 0-100 km/h vs 7.3 s 0-100 km/h

Time to stop living your life clock watching.

              • @netjock: Can anyone explain to me Much less performance means 0.4 sec faster??

                • @abuseyourdna: Sorry I should have responded to the person you were responding to :D

                • @abuseyourdna:

Can anyone explain to me Much less performance means 0.4 sec faster??

0.4 seconds is the difference between Usain Bolt and the second fastest person in the world.

Very 0.1-second counts when one wants to be the best.

        • So it's cheaper with lower performance.

          That sounds about right.

  • +2

Picnic blanket and basket in the back, stop somewhere nice and DATY.

  • +8

RRP isn't a deal. This should be a forum post.

    • If Disney content is a deal, then why isn't this?

  • It should have been out of stock by now …. No !?

    • +2

They take orders for stuff that is still long way off like Cybertruck so a few week later we get the forum post "Should I be compensated for the 12 month wait on my preorder model Y"

      • Free colour coded charger cables

  • +2

Going to have to cut out lettuce to afford this.

    • You can bulk it up with cabbage like KFC and get the best of both worlds

      • Subway too. Probably the same supplier.

  • +1

the bargain isn't the price. The bargain is if you want a new EV and don't want to wait 12 months. Aug-sept deliveries if you order today.

    • +3

Looks like those slots are taken. now showing Nov 2022 – Feb 2023 availability

      • Woohoo! I got on the first boat.

        • i honestly can't tell how many people are serious to have placed an order when there are so many recommendations to buy non-tesla instead.

I hesitated as really wanted the long range. Also isn't the standard range has a cheaper interior? Not sure where i read it last time.

          • @wiltonson:

Also isn't the standard range has a cheaper interior?

No the MY SR and MY P both have the premium interior.
You might be thinking of the model 3?

            • @tanksinatra: yes i must be thinking of model 3. which i assume will have the same set up for Y (i.e. only LR and Performance have premium interior)

  • +3

If I buy will Westpac call and offer me a 6 figure entry level role?

  • what is avg cost of comprehensive insruance for model Y? Would it be more expensive than similar ICE car?

    • Yes

  • Does anyone know if the Tesla Model Y boot can fit 2 adult mountain bikes for the weekend getaways? I'm looking for a SUV and this is tempting. Thanks.

  • +1

Cheaper to buy a $20,000 normal car and have $80,000 in cash for fuel which is about 500,000km range (@ $2.00/L, 8L per 100km).

    • Cheaper to buy a normal car and add LPG to it. But that defeats the purpose I guess.

    • Think about the emissions and the planet.

      • -2

Think about the emissions of mining and manufacturing all these electric vehicles, wind and solar are not as environmentally friendly as you think and have issues themselves of deposal of old parts. The thing that has the least impact and zero emissions is nuclear power.

The earth should already be 2-3 degrees hotter by now since when I was born yet basically nothing, maybe the sun is playing some small part in the climate change issue some what.

You should be more scared about the flipping of the earths magnetic poles in the next 20-100 years, nothing says climate change quite like the stripping of the atmosphere.

        • Well the earth is flat. That might be really bad. 🤔

          • +1

@BewareOfThe Dog: But yes , nuclear is great when controlled , and it's ridiculous that despite our abundance of uranium, we cannot afford a nuclear reactor to power half a continent.

    • Where can you find a $20,000 normal car with similar size now?
