  • Matched, good price if you still can get Perk voucher.

  • JB's shipping has always been a little faster.

  • +2

So it's 69 with perks coupon

    • Price match at Jb and then get it for $68!

    • if only they would send me my perks coupon

    • +2

      nice

  • any Tv special price at the moment ?

  • +2

It's quite funny how I messaged the online chat for JB this morning and they said they couldn't price match because it was 'below cost'.. and now..

    • +7

Tells u how much BS they give u when they dont want to price match.

    • -1

If OW is $78 and JB is $79, then cost could have been between the two, e.g., $78.50?

      BS unconfirmed

  • Do any people with android TVs use these? Or are they best used for dumb tvs?

    • +2

I have android TV (Sony X80G), bought one of that for my sister's old dumb TV. But man, that device is so smooth compared to my TV.

Although, one could argue I have sucky TV.

      • Yeah I feel you, x80x to x90x is a huge jump in terms of software performance. Picture and colour is all good, but going through the interface on the x80x is sloowwwww

    • I do. I have 4 of these running on 4 tv's. 2 x dumb tv's, 1 x semi smart tv and one android tv.

I run everything through them, all set up the same. I have the main streaming apps, the FTA apps, Plex, TuneIn radio. Works well for me.

      • I have these running on all my TVs except one, idea being run android tv and get same experience an apps on all devices

      • Got one for an older 70 inch Sharp TV my father in law gave us which has terrible, clunky software but otherwise is still very decent. It's given it a completely new lease of life, definitely recommended for any TV with slow menus etc.

      • What do you use for watching FTA live? I've experimented with the 7 and 9 android tv apps watching live channels, but always found it clunky.

        • I don't watch much live FTA but I do use catch up a fair bit.

For the odd sport event I just use Kayo. For news, I just live stream ABC and find it works perfectly.

I can't comment on the 7 or 9 apps as I can't ever recall watching live.

          • @scupper: That looks pretty good, may say that up too.
Annoying (on my TV) flicking back to the free to air, not only is my interface a bit average but there is no sound from the soundbar the first time, have to change inputs a few times or power the soundbar on again, then it selects the Google TV input before you can go back to the TV input. Pretty clunky (CEC / ARC fun, but probably the cheap tv)

          • +1

@scupper: Excellent, just set this up. Much cleaner and faster interface than my Eko 4k's FTA.
I assume the app picks up the 1080p version if available. Looks mostly quite good quality.

The individual apps are alright and good for catch up / on demand. Still hit and miss though, 7+ hasn't been working really for live tv.

          • @scupper: Wondering about the sound decoding, so far only looks like Stero?

            • +1

@G-rig: Do you have AV Receiver? Set it up to sound passthrough

            • @G-rig: just going to soundbar. The CCwGTV is the source then into the soundbar, HDMI ARC to telly.
I've changed the setting to passthrough in kodi, just shows up as stereo on the info in the EPG.
              Cheers,

              • @G-rig: Try VLC play some surround video to passthrough and see if you can get Dolby or DTS, also make sure your ARC can passthrough.

                • @superforever: All that is fine for other apps, it was just a query about the IPTV app and if it actually displays anything other than stereo. Will investigate, Cheers

              • @G-rig:

just shows up as stereo on the info in the EPG.

If you are talking about FTA app, I think they can only do stereo not surround.

                • @superforever: Cheers mate just as I thought. Not usually an issue for convenience.

Could be some people with slow android TVs use these. We bought a cheapo android TV but the UI runs quite slow - looking to get an fire stick or Chromecast maybe

    • Yeah I use it plugged into a hue sync that's on a high end smart tv. I much prefer the chromecast to using the tv app

    • I bought the Chromecast with Google TV to watch Disney+. Like it, but the remote has very poor battery life. Purchased Eneloop Pro rechargeable batteries for the remote and they only last about 2 weeks. Supposedly an update was meant to help battery life, but mine is updated and still have issue. So I still use it, but with my normal TV remote which seems to work fine and haven't needed to change the batteries at all. Was thinking it could be that the voice activation on the Google remote is always active and maybe that's why it has such poor battery life, not sure.

      • +1

Sounds like a faulty remote or batteries, should last ages like any other remote.

      • +1

Voice activation shouldn't always be active if there's a button to activate voice commands.

      • Have tried multiple types of batteries and seems to be a known problem. Have put links to various forums complaining about the issue below. Mentions that it is an IR (infrared) remote which causes battery drain. Have updated remote, so up to date. IDK I just use my tv remote to control it instead and it seems to work fine with no battery drain, so I guess I'll keep doing that. Other than the remote problem I do like the Google TV, it looks nice and shows you new shows that you might want to see on other streaming services. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi's on Disney+ now, so I was going to get Disney+ again. Would recommend, just remote has poor battery life.

Google Community talks about it here - https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Chromecast/Google-TV-…

I found the original battery in the remote only lasted a few months, but after replacing them I haven't had to change them since (in multiple google TV's around the house, they were all the same)

          • @MrGareth: I'm glad yours works alright. Maybe I'll try some more things and see if I can fix the issue. I guess I could take it back, but I've had it a while now. Will look into it further then.

Just out of interest you said it had been fine since replacing the batteries, how long have you had the new batteries in the remote? Also are they rechargeable batteries or normal ones? I've tried normal batteries though and still had same issue. Thanks

      • Assume you did the remote software upgrade in the settings?
and or tired a different remote? Should be a warranty thing if it's under a year?
I'd just take it back for a replacement perhaps

        • Yes I've updated software and other remotes work fine with the Google TV. Found my receipt as well as original box for it and it was purchased in July last year, so I might just take it back. Bit of a hassle, hopefully the next one will be ok. Seems MrGareth's (comment above) hasn't had any problems, so hopefully this next one will be better.

          • +1

@Lucky13: Should just get a refund mate then buy a new one for $68.

People complain but still like the device on the whole. Still a bit of irrelevant clutter, advertising shows on services you don't have and can't disable down Bottom..

Nord VPN app works well and even got the HBO app goin'

        • Yeah could get a refund and get a new one with the $10 discount voucher, but I've already created 4 JB Hifi accounts and run out of burner sims. Might just get a replacement. Good thinking though.

          • +1

@Lucky13: Not sure what all that is about, but I'd just take it back and tell them about the remote issue. Get a store credit and buy a new one for 69$.

    • Yes big upgrade on most built-in android os TVs. I got an Eko 4k, but have it plugged into the soundbar directly to get Atmos sound.

    • For anyone that has this. Can you create an album of your photos in Google photos to show up on the TV as an album/ screensaver.

Basically use the TV as a photo album with Google photos.

Samsung have the same but it's a pain to use

      • Yes it's call Ambient mode, look that up :)

    Anyone consider this vs Firestick….

For those who prefer to easily access playstore and doing chromecast without extra setup
Google TV is much better than Firestick 4K Max

For those just need simple feature (one click button to Netflix / Disney+ / Youtube)
    or prefer to sideload app
    Firestick is a great product

    • Basically the main difference is Google have cast and no for Firestick.

Firestick also doesn't have it own volume control and Google can assign the key to control own Chromecast vol.

      • Firestick detects your TV and controls its volume instead.

        • Chromecast can also control tv volume, part of the initial set up.

          • @zorrt: I know, I wasn't correcting the Google comment, I was correcting the Fire stick one.

      • I set one of these up yesterday. As we send volume from the TV via optical cable to an external amp I'm very disappointed that the same as with Firestick the volume buttons don't work for the device itself. This is contrary to a Mecool KD3 TV stick which gives users the option to use internal volume control or assign it to an attached CEC HDMI device. The Chromecast remote cannot vary the volume level from the device itself.

        • Not sure about AV recievers, but the HDMI ARC (and CEC) all works pretty well with my soundbar, tv and Google TV remotes.
Don't know if there are more settings but optical out is usually a fixed level output/passthrough i thought.

        • +1

The Chromecast remote cannot vary the volume level from the device itself.

You can, try go to remote settings and change the vol button to "Chromecast"

          • +1

@superforever: You were spot on, volume now working on the device - cheers.

        • +1

You 100% can control the volume of the Chromecast dongle itself…

      • This is pretty much what swung it for me when I bought the Chromecast recently.

      • Basically the main difference is Google have cast and no for Firestick.

Found that you can actually cast with FireStick, tried Prime Video, YouTube, Netflix all detected it.

    • For TVs with overscan, Firestick.
If you want a bigger remote, Firestick
However, the Firestick has a more cluttered interface.

      • If you want a bigger remote, Firestick

        Google remote very slippery

Firestick remote the circle is a little bit harder to press than Google, if you use it a lot to enter email, password you will feel tired XD

the Firestick has a more cluttered interface.

How is that? Just got my 4k max very similiar to Google TV.

Firestick detects your TV and controls its volume instead.

Google can do the same plus control its own vol which cannot with Firestick.

        • I find it a little more cluttered since your apps are in a small row in the middle, and not the same size as surrounding buttons. Since I tend not to play any of the shows suggested on the screen, the actual useful area becomes the thin band of 4 buttons in the middle-right of the screen.

    • Love my Shield

  • other than being able to cast to, what functionality would this offer for my dumb tv over say a ps4?

    • This is a much better streaming media player than a ps4. Has all the apps, constantly gets app updates, constantly gets new apps.

      • I didn't have any issues with the PS4 apps but it's a little less cumbersome in some ways and the casting is nice

  • How is this a bargain? It was $139 with $95 worth of Netflix credit for so many months before. I would have thought everyone would have one by now?

  • +2

    Love that snow colour.

    Much better than boring "white".

    • +1

Snow colour exactly like snow… it’s unique and exclusive (and patented!) to the Google Store. I liked it so much I got my office painted the same colour. Now I nervously await the cease, desist, and repaint notice from Google’s lawyers

Nice share!! I got $20 cashback from Combank and use it to buy this.

Awesome piece of gear. Can hook up Xbox 360 controllers with the receiver into USB and play old emulators or android games.

    • Or stream game from gaming PC or Xbox cloud.

      • Oh yeah that works fairly well, I use the moonlight app. Bit of input delay on wireless though so might need Ethernet.

        • Check and make sure you don't have 5GHz WiFi issue on it, because of some Mesh WiFi couldn't change it to lower channel.

    • How

      • How what? USBc dongle and get apps off the store.

        • can you recommend a dongle please?

          • @191919: Mine is no longer available on Amazon, but I believe you need power passthrough to work. Mine was 100w.

          • @191919: Mine is VAVA 8 in 1.

    • hook up Xbox 360 controllers with the receiver into USB

I didn't know it works with Xbox 360 receiver, let me try the non official receiver.

      EDIT:

Just tried works perfectly with 360 receiver and controller and Moonlight, thanks for the tips no need to waste $$ to buy a bluetooth controller.

BTW, I am using VAVA 8 into 1 USB-C hub and also works perfectly with Google Chromecast TV but you have to use a more powerful USB-C power adapter the one came with it not powerful enough.

can you recommend a dongle please?

Mine only those found from eBay not original

  • Works well for most stuff. Suspect they'll replace it soon.

Very very small storage. I suspect it's so small it's caused them difficulty patching the unit for new Android releases. So it's well behind and seems abandoned.

Disney+ will hitch on it sometimes too.

    All other stuff fine.

The Chromecast remote cannot vary the volume on the device itself.

    • use HDMI

    • +1

You can control the volume of the device itself, it's hidden away in the settings. You can either tell it to control the device itself, or the host (TV, Receiver etc).

  • Does anyone know when the 2022 version is coming out (apparently with more internal memory)?

    • They need to add more storage and av1 then it's much closer to future proof for a few years

  • Typical. Held off on buying one of these for ages looking out for a deal and finally went for it a couple of weeks ago. Not a big deal in terms of dollars but somewhat annoying.

  • Just wish they had more memory. Run out of space very fast.

    • you could get a usb hub, I've got the google ethernet adapter but you could kill two birds with one stone.
Don't ask which one, they are pretty finicky etc.
I haven't installed too many apps but yeah support for SD card be nice for emulator games etc.
