690

22% off the Dell Outlet site for Alienware until my birthday (17th June, ending at 7pm)
Possibly the whole site? Hard to tell, it's not the best website, but everything appears to be discounted decently well

I bought the ALIENWARE M15 RYZEN EDITION R5 LAPTOP for $1469, upped to $1503.02 with two years warranty instead of 1 (and basic instead of premium)

Looks like there are plenty more Alienware and Dell G Series laptops that are pretty good value too, but you'll have to click around for them

how would this compare with the asus nitro 5 from harvey norman overall?

    • +22

Don't compare computers with Acer. Acer is the lowest end. Combined with the well known support from Harvey Norman a disaster

      • +7

Exactly what I'm using right now - Acer (desktop) from HN that I got a few years ago.
(It was best price for a decent spec at the time that I could get for free. ie. pay with points/gift vouchers.)
Hasn't skipped a beat. Not saying Acer are the best by any means, just that they probably aren't the worst.

        • See my thread on dealing with two overheating nitro 5's and harvey and acer each playing "not it"

          • @typhoonadventure: Interesting. I mined crypto 24/7 on a bunch of those 3060 nitros during the boom and found the cooling to be more than adequate.

            • @Canberralad92: What i've noticed out of acer is quality control and longevity.

Had numerous mates through the years who have grabbed them where it's been hit or miss. Some swear by them, others had them cook, everyone who even had one arrive with a scratch on the bezel still found hell with their warranty department

        • +1

That you got once lucky doesn't mean it will happen again.

        • +3

Out of the big guys, they are definitely the worst.

Not everything they make is crap, and some stuff they make is quite good, but in general, Acer machines are generally the worst build quality you'll see across all major brands.

Back in the day I sold literally hundreds of PCs and laptops. We carried mainly HP, Compaq (which is HP owned, but was still run as a separate business) and Acer. Sold more HP than anything else, but 3/4 of units returned for repairs were Acer. And even just picking them up, they were the most 'plasticy' by far.

From what I hear from people working in sales and support now, plus reviews, not a whole lot has changed.

i think everything very similar just the processor as usual intel vs amd

      • +2

        Don’t forget that RGB!!!

    • +9

Nitro 5's 3060 is 95w, this here is the full 130w 3060. Nitro 5 does not have a mux switch unlike the M15R5, this means worse frames especially in FPS intensive games.

And as far as I remember all nitro machines had 4 or 6 core intel CPU and this is an 8c16t 5800H so will be better in basically everything including battery life.

Killer Wifi 6 + 100%srgb panel vs I think with the nitro 5 you are looking at some washed out 120/144hz panels.

Also much better build quality-AW's low end machines have gone down in this regard but its still miles better than an Acer Nitro.

Add in RGB, and resale value, this is a much more completely package.

Im sorry but if you dont know what you are talking about gtfo lmao honestly.

Under 1k? what parallel world are you living at?

< 1k cant even net you a nitro 5 3060 since that goes on sale for 1.1k, and this machine even with the downsides is a far better one than the nitro 5. Not to mention the bios and drivers updates dell have released down the line for the M15 have made it quite a decent machine among its peers and 1.5k is the cheapest one can get for an 8core 5800h+130w full powered 3060 + mux switch.

No one mate, I just hate to see a bargain going by unnoticed because somebody gave it a trash reputation it didnt deserve.

This is honestly a stupidly good deal, something I would buy in a heartbeat if I was in need of a gaming laptop-if I didnt have a better one already.

          • -3

            @Brrrrt: that's fair mate : ) yep doesn't seem like a bad deal.

          • @Brrrrt: Out of curiosity, what have you got?

            • @mojadu: Good question, I just recently switched from a Zephyrus Duo (5900hx/3070) to an x15R2 (12700H/3080ti). Maybe not a switch everyone thinks is worth it but I personally prefer the extra power and the worse battery life that intel brings isnt that big of an issue for me personally.

          • +7

            @Brrrrt:

            No one mate

            That is defamatory mate.

            • +1

@No ONE: Ah dang it, my bad sorry ;( Didnt mean to name and shame ya

    • Under 1k with these specs? quit trolling.

  • -7

oh nice a gaming laptop, does it come with a forklift to move it around with and 5KW power supply?

edit: guess no one liked my joke eh

    • I liked the copypasta, was a good read so you earned a +

      • +1

        haha thanks man : )

  • +8

Why does your birthday end at 7pm?

    • +17

Because that's when my wife will go to bed and I'll miss out on my annual gobbie 9000

    • +7

Because of Government restriction on electricity :(

  • It's still a whole lot of moneeeeeey

  • +1

Good deal. Cheaper than most high powered RTX3060 laptops from good brands. Not sure how reliable it’ll be as a refurbished device and dealing with customer support can always be a pain. If there aren’t any issues with refurbished laptops from dell, then this would be a pretty damn good deal.

Not sure what it's like nowdays, but ~6 years ago I bought an Alienware laptop off the refurb store (when it was farrrr worse than it is now) and the service was exceptional. It developed a fault in the ribbon cable for the screen (I was traveling a LOT so it copped some abuse) and they sent out a technician, to my home, the next business day. Guy turns up, diagnoses problem, and returns ~3 days later to repair with new part. He actually ordered a few different parts to ensure that second visit it would be fixed. It was outrageously good service.

Unsure if warranty is still the same or not, but yeah, it was 'premium' and treated the exact same as regular store when I purchased it at least. Back when you had to message them and hope they hadn't sold out yet to buy something hah.

      • Can confirm the Dell premium service is still very good, not next business day level (and im in Sydney CBD so no excuse there), but they do book a timeslot for you (and you can choose what time suits you) and come to your door to fix it. My unit come with unbalanced speakers, they came and fixed it. Found scratches on the laptop, they are ordering replacements as we speak and will come when the parts arrive. Also came to repaste my laptop when I complained about the high temps.

Don't forget AMEX 10% back if you have one.

  • Thanks OP

  • TBH i would just go the MSI GF65 from microsoft atm which is $70 cheaper, basically the same specs, and is not refurbished.

    • +4

Thats a 85w 3060 without mux switch and a 6 core intel 14nm++++++++++ cpu, pretty big performance difference here.

  • -1

There is a risk that REFURBISHED=EX-MINING.

    • +9

Nah, most likely just change of mind return.

      • +1

This. Half the time not even a real 'return', just a cancelled order. Have bought refurbed hardware from Dell many times, and each time it was brand new.

  • This have a thunderbolt port?

    • No. It's an AMD laptop.

  • +4

For anyone interested, I have received the serial number / service tag for my order. Looked it up on the ol' reliable Dell warranty checkererer and it appears to be a laptop with warranty/shipping date dated around early January 2022. I cannot gleam any more info from the warranty site but nice to know it's from 2022 at least lol

    • Hey mate, how long did it take after the purchase to get the serial/service tag?

      • Only an hour, maybe an hour and a half.

        There was an email from Dell with the subject 'Your Dell Order Has Been Confirmed' which had a pdf attachment, and in the pdf there were details on the laptop including the service tag;

Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 Laptop (REFURBISHED)
$1,366.37 (this is the before GST price)
Service: Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 Laptop (REFURBISHED)
        Service Tag: redacted
        Service: redacted

        • Thanks mate, I got mine as well a few hours later. It also shows now that my order has shipped already. I should probably get it sometime this week.

          • @meego: Update : The laptop was delivered today as well.

    • Dang mines from July 2021…hopefully not too much wear on mine.

      • Got my confirmation this morning. Mine is from mid December 2021. I hope it's not too banged up

        • Did yours come with premium support? Mine has accidental repair coverage. Would be a shame if a drink got spilled on it. 😅

          • @nomoneynoproblems: Bawahahaha 😆 Mine has premium support until March 2023. Think I might need to get hold of them, pretty sure they said it has 12 months of premium support and warranty 🙄

            • @BigJam: Mine has now updated with the proper warranty details. Also was apparently shipped yesterday. Hopefully comes today but no tracking link yet to check, also I'm pretty regional so unlikely

              • @mojadu: Is it coming snail mail with Auspost or someone else? Mine has an expected delivery date of the 4/7 and I'm in Vic

                • @BigJam: Wish I knew. Got no info on the shipping at all. Mine was estimated to ship out on 23rd June with an arrival date of 1st July but it shipped out 16th June instead and the arrival date hasn't updated and still says 1st July. I'd like to think these are extreme estimates and it will come a lot sooner

                • @BigJam: Mine just arrived. I was out so missed out but should be able to grab it from auspost after 4

                  • @mojadu: Mine just arrived too. Haven’t switched it on yet but the device looks mint. It must have had the top and bottom covers replaced. Not a single bit of wear.

  • The above laptop is now out of stock.

This one, however, is not - https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-alienware-m15-…
Literal exact same laptop and price, but Windows 10 rather than Windows 11 :)

  • Looks like will start to see more of these cheaper outlet AW from now on

  • The brand new one is only $1889 plus you can get 10% cash back from cashrewards

  • Both Links OOS it seems :(

    • Bugger. Not sure how much stock they had but either there wasn't much, or these were very popular

      • Probably a bit of both, that price is great. Too bad I didn't see it earlier

        • Hey mate if you’re still interested I’m thinking about selling mine.

AMD 3070 for 2339 aud seems pretty good.
