  • The camels report doesn’t seem right?
I thought these were normally around $30-$40?

    • +1

      Correct about $31-$37

  • +1

And this is why I hate Prime Day, you see how much you paid for stuff a month ago. Nice tool, Adjustable in length.

    • I paid $31 early June. Definitely had $10 of value out of it since then :-)

Great little device for those with a Barista Express.

  • For a moment I thought this looked like a door stop!

    • If you set it into the floor I imagine it would work quite well!

  • +2

Started yesterday on the home made expresso journey with a 2nd hand Bambino Plus. Will buy this tamper. Any recommendation on a scale, dosing cup and knock bin.
Going to start with a bag of grounded coffee to get familiar with dosing and tampering and if it works out will think about getting a grinder.

    • Skip the scale knock bin and dosing cup and save up for the grinder …..once you have grinder save for knock bin …..I don't have scales or dosing cup, dose from timer on grinder ….and use same cup so know level … Grind will vary between bean brands ….and freshness …..

      • +4

Don't you need a scale to measure the time on the grinder to reach 18g for example? As well as the expresso time to get a 1:2 ratio?

        • +2

yes, grinder and scale are the two most important items

then dosing funnel and WDT tool (but can easily make your own WDT tool)

          • @commandershephard: My wine cork with half a dozen sewing needles stuck into it does the job. Dosing funnel not super necessary, although it definitely makes things easier and less messy.

          • @commandershephard: After getting a funnel I find my WDT pretty useless, I just put the coffee in through the funnel and give it a few hard knocks each side, I don't seem to get channelling anymore.

Funny thing is the expensive WDT I bought online is worse than the extremely crappy home made one I made with a cork, electrical tape and acupuncture needles (and the one I paid for seemed to use almost the same needles!).

        • -1

There is depth you fill the basket to, too much and you can't fit into group head ….too little And water runs through too quick …..too fine a grind and too much pressure … Too coarse grind too little pressure … And of course 18g baskets vs 8g baskets….. For 30 years I just used the conical coffee spoon to measure …..

      • +5

100% ignore this and get a scale.

      • +6

Strong disagree here - you absolutely need a scale if you want any semblance of a good espresso shot that you can consistently recreate. Without scales you're purely guessing at the amount of coffee going in, and the yield coming out.

Knock box is neither here nor there if you have a bin close by IMO.

        • The same weight and grind on lavatza creates more back pressure than Vittorio….

          • +4

@garage sale: If you are using Lavazza or Vittorio then I wouldn't bother with a coffee distributor at all - who knows how fresh this stuff is

            • @lot10n: You get what you pay for. Vittorio is really bad, Lavazza is a different story. Try almost every product, none disappoints. Note I only make milk drinks so not very picky on the shot. It is super bargain when its on 40% or half price. Just start trying the Aldi ones too, not bad so far.

      • +1

Scale is still good to check your puting in the right amount but your right fresh beans and a grinder are always best and you should never even get pre ground coffee always buy bean freshly roasted and grind them with a decent grinder.

      • I'm on the same boat! My set up is Bambino Plus + Breville Smart Grinder Pro and this tamper too. So far good enough for me without scale, only playing with the grind time on SGP.

Not saying this is the best way, just sharing my experience. Please don't neg :)

        • +1

I highly recommend getting a scale, you just need any old scale that goes to 0.1g, very cheap off Amazon. I didn't use a scale for years, finally worked out why I was getting crappy inconsistent espresso.

    • +3

Knockbox - wouldn't worry about it.
Dosing cup - wouldn't worry about it, can just pour / scoop into the portafilter from your pre ground bag.
Scale - get a well reviewed cheapie off ebay or aliexpress that measures in 0.1g increments and doesn't have an 'auto-off' function. Having a scale is important, despite what the commenter below says.

Grinder is the most important to getting a good cup, but I can also understand wanting to dip your toe in the water with ground coffee so that's fair enough. Definitely something to consider in the near future though if you decide you enjoy the 'hobby' of espresso and want to improve your shots.

      • +1

What this guy said is spot on

    • I was going to 3d print one but glad i bought this one. this tamper is nice and solid, almost 500g. Dosing cup - spare espresso cup. scale - timemore (aliexpress). Dosing funnel/ring, something off amazon as well.

    • +1

I’m in the same boat - just got a base model bambino.

I got a Timemore scale which was a little pricey, but worth it considering we needed a good all round scale. It’ll be great for my other brewing methods too.

Another great scale to look at is Hario.

    • I'm gonna vote for a knock bin. Actually been really handy for us. Waaaaay less messy. Wife also uses it for her loose leaf tea.
We just have the Breville one.

    • dosing cup

I'm planning on buying an extending dosing funnel for the portafilter. Saves some cleaning.
Also plan to get a tamping mat and coffee bean storage with a good guys voucher that should come tomorrow.

      • Hadn't heard of an extending dosing funnel, sounds handy, cheers

    • +1

Thanks everyone for your advice. Bought a $21 Disenkelubo Digital Mini scale on Amazon, can't afford or justify anything higher at this stage of my journey.

I thought a dosing cup would make less of a mess. Put your dosing cup under the grinder or in my case scope up some pre grounded coffee and then put the portafilter on top and flip the whole thing over. Am i missing something?

      • Yes it will make less mess, but not essential at this stage. If you're getting annoyed by mess I do recommend one. Your explanation of how they work is correct.

    • +1

I’ve had bambino plus for 2.5 years now and love it. purchased a lot of accessories and bits and from my experience (which was nothing prior apart from nespresso):
      - get a grinder. If you are worried about scales and all that I’m expecting you want good coffee and the difference fresh grind vs ground is the best start. Unless you give up on the coffee machine you will buy one in very soon anyway. Breville smart grinder on special is perfect combo.
      - scale. Get one of the sub $20 ones off Amazon with atleast .1 gram
      - knock box. Can use edge of the bin for now and once you get over it constantly spilling over the edges buy one. I like my Dreamfarm Grindenstein (I ended up getting the large)
      - this tamp. It’s great. Makes it so simple.
      - funnel. Definitely not necessary but I like that it saves the mess every time and no need to worry about any waste.
      - single wall basket. Probably the biggest thing to get when trying to actually make good coffee. I called breville and ordered.
      - bottomless portafilter. Waste of money I don’t use it. Looks cool though. It also came with a single wall basket so May be more economical than as above.
      - beans. When starting and wanting to practice try the Aldi beans. $13kg and surprisingly good for the price. Not so worried wasting it Like with $40-50
      - watch lots of YouTube

      • How much was the single wall basket from Breville?

        • $8.95 + $11 delivery or free shipping if order is over $49.

          • @BellaWii: Thanks! Shipping cost kills it :(

          • +1

@BellaWii: Hmm… mine comes with both.

            • @syswong: From what I understand, the AU model comes with double wall filter basket (both single and double shot). I heard that US model comes with both single and double wall filter basket, each has single and double shot, hence 4 in total

      • I'm coming from pods, so I'm expecting a step up using pre grounded coffee and freshly grinded beans to be the peak. I'm not in a hurry to reach the peak as I still have to save up for a grinder. Been watching plenty of youtube though.
The portafilter that comes with the Bambino, do you remove the plastic inside and if so how?

      • On the bottomless portafilter, I would love to use as it looks cool and helps me check how my puck prep turned out, but too many times I want to actually split my shot in two, so I never end up using it. Oh yeah, the other benefit to bottomless is it's easier to clean cause you don't have to worry about the spout thing.

    • For a scale just get a cheap $15-$20 one off Amazon to start with, but it needs to go to 0.1g. I have a Rhino dosing cup which is great, but I think any old dosing cup will do. Knock bin I have found the Breville ones are great as they are easy to clean, the bar is easily removable and they bin is sort of curved inside so coffee doesn't get stuck in corners.

If you get ground coffee try to get it from a specialist coffee shop or roaster, they will grind it on the day for you so it's ground relatively fresh.

    • Skip the knock bin and empty the used coffee from the basket into your vegetable & fruit peelings container, then into your compost bin.

  • +6
    • Good one! Cheers

  • This vs more expensive Crema brand one?

    • +1

      no difference, essentially just rebranded

      • Damn that's a lot of price difference though

        • +1

Crema has a lot of high priced accessories that are very similar to ones on aliexpress…
I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they’re the original and the others are knockoffs but still, can’t really see any difference

          • +1

@jrjr: Yeah to be fair once they have the exact measurements, it would be easy to replicate anyway. Won't be surprised if they're made in the same factory too lol

    • They works the same way, some in better finish, such as OCD.

  • +4

I have one and rate it, would recommend for Barista Express and Pro owners

    • The one comes with it is not good enough?

      • this has the distribution tool on one side which is much better than the razor.
the tamp is also adjustable so you can set it at a set depth for more consistency than the standard one that comes with the machine

        • agree, get a really consistent pour with this as opposed to the breville one

  • Wish this was 58 mm for dual boiler :-(

  • They also have a dosing ring which is cheaper than other Amazon brands like neouza.

  • I use the 58mm with DB, great for the price. Works just as good as a $200 one with the champion barista name stamp on it.

  • +1

I've been using this exact tamper for over a year now, works great, it's really convenient and easy to use, and allows you to keep your shots more consistent. Highly recommended.

I have friends who insist that REAL coffee enjoyers tamp manually by muscle memory and don't use crutches. If you have similar friends like these, ignore them. These people would still insist on riding horse-drawn carriages, and that TRUE commute enjoyers wouldn't drive an automobile. An adjustable tamper genuinely is a QoL improvement worth trying out.

  • Interesting so that's the concept that the Breville Oracle used for its tamping system. Never realised

  • Thanks OP, been looking into these. I've got the Barista Touch.

  • Been waiting for this to go on sale, thanks

  • Nice - picked one up

  • Thanks, bought this 2 years ago around this price from a random seller on amazon that scammed everyone and closed their store. Nice to see this price for real

  • I'm sure this is useful as a tamper and having a level 'tamp' (is that a word?) is important, but tamping pressure doesnt really make a difference according to the experts

    https://www.sevenmiles.com.au/editorial/tamping-coffee/#:~:t….

https://www.home-barista.com/knockbox/tamp-pressure-doesnt-m… (if you count these people as expert)

    • +2

If the above is true, these devices also offer the advantage of evenness in tamping and keeping consistent tamping pressure. It just takes the guesswork out of tamping imho

  • +1

waiting for a deal for the 58mm one

  • Cheers OP - got one. And a couple of other things I probably didn’t need.

  • Need a 54mm for bambino :(

    • +1

i thought this 53mm was designed to fit 54mm portafillers?

  • Seeing as we are talking coffee does anyone have a recommendation on a 58mm bottomless portafilter?

    • I used a hole saw and cordless drill as portafilter is made of brass so soft metal …

      • Haha! Well I guess that's one way!

  • +1

Did the extra 8% promo disappear?

    • cant see it also

  • +1

Looks like it's a lightning deal now and is showing at $25.59
    Edit: Still got one

  • Is there something similar for Dual Boiler at 58mm basket size? Or will this fit dual boiler?

    Showing as $25.59 as well

Edit: read the comments link provided above

    • yes I have the 58mm one of this the tamper / distributer combo its really good quality.

  • thanks OP got one on lightning deal

  • +1

Resisted previous deals but finally got one a couple of months ago, paid $30 for it. It really does help consistent puck preparation. Earlier hesitation was concerned about needing to re-adjust tamping depth as ground volume changes, but it's not necessary, it's more about achieving levelled puck surface than tamping force/compression.

Have tried turning the distribution side clockwise and counter-clockwise, think clockwise is correct. Saw a video from Alternative Brewing or might have been James Hoffmann's channel, he shows quarter turn counter-clockwise than a few turns of clockwise, he showed that in a see through container, too. Can't fund the video, it's somewhere in YouTube.

  • Anyone uses Breville espresso machine that has built in grinder and still bought a separate standalone grinder?

Thinking to get Eureka mignon but not sure how much improvement over the built in

    • +1

We do, side by side you can definitely tell the Eureka produces more consistent grounds, with minimum clumps.

With the built in grinder we need to use a WDT tool to prevent channelling.

We use both grinders for different beans, so a bit hard to do taste comparison. She likes coffee from beans in the built in grinder, I like the beans in Eureka, I guess that's all it matters. :D

      • Cool, I think less clumps and consistency is the key. Just so expensive for the initial investment lol

    • +1

Just got a Eureka to replace a stand along delonghi grinder and certainly the grind is much finer (even without being as fine as it goes) and the coffee does taste better to me

      • Oh good to know thanks!
I think if we're drinking coffee a few days a week it's a worth buying

  • Still available at a slightly higher price (12:18pm).

    Same link: $25.59

  • +1

It can be found for $23.39

53mm Coffee Distributor, MATOW Espresso Distribution Tool, Coffee Leveler Fits for 54mm Breville Portafilter- Professional Espresso Distributor Leveler Tool https://amzn.asia/d/dWnphO8

    • +1

That's not the same, it's just the one sided distributer.

      • -1

Thanks for the correction. I'm sorry if anyone has bought because of my comment.

  • Got mine today. Bit disappointed as there's a bit of rust on the inside

    • Which part does the rust appear? The two center piece is stainless steel and shouldn't rust at all.

The two outer rings I am not sure….

      • I unscrewed the entire thing and the rust is on the flat end of the screw. I'll give it a good clean with some vinegar and a scrub.

        • I assume you mean the Temp / Distributor then? Funny those two part shouldn't rust at all.

I would have take photo and ask for replacement…..

Thanks for the heads up, better keep mine perfectly dry then just in case.

          • @syswong: Excuse the mess but here's a pic. It is a little bit cleaner now but there's still some after cleaning

            https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/88313/97282/img2022071…

I'd rather not return due to being a pain.. Might try for a replacement.

            • +1

@Caped Baldy: good thing when working with steel, you have plenty of people to ask…..

Stainless steel does rust, so I was wrong on that. (Been told its call stainless not rustless 😓😓)

Anyway, try WD40 as that's what I've been told. if still doesn't work, lodge a replacement.

              • @syswong: Going to go with the replacement via Amazon. Bit annoying as I have to buy another one and tell them it's due to a return…

Stainless steel does rust, so I was wrong on that. (Been told its call stainless not rustless 😓😓)

Don't be too hard on yourself. It's a learning experience!
