Works out to be $49 a month.

    • +9

Nope, not when you can regularly buy gift cards at a discount or with points bonus (~10%) it doesn’t.

      • +6

How does that affect this offer?

        • +12

It lowers the effective value of the gift card to $1080. Making the ‘cost’ per month $54

            • +3

@SolitaryMan: But you could buy $1200 of GC for $1080…

    • +8

Works out a lot less if you can claim back tax too

      • Can you claim on the $99×24 as well as the $1200 when, say, a laptop is bought?

        • You can claim a percentage of your mobile contract if you use it for work purposes. The invoice will be $99 so say 50% work usage, then apply your tax rate

        • Very possibly! You get bills from Telstra for the phone plan, and a purchase receipt from JB when you buy a product.

        • Yes, payments made with gift vouchers are tax deductible, even if you didn't buy them.

          • +2

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: Actually if you use gift cards to buy an item that is being claimed on tax, the tax office needs to see evidence that the gift cards were purchased by the claimant otherwise there is no evidence to say that the expense was incurred by the claimant. The gift cards may have been given as a Xmas present to the claimant by the employer in which case the company would have already claimed a deduction on the cards. Just a technicality but my accountant always needs the receipt for the gift card purchases to ensure I insured the original expense. Nothing to stop you getting fly bus or everyday resets points though from buying the gift cards at Coles or woolies.

            • @BargainBenno: Possibly…but you are entitled to claim a deduction for vouchers given to you as a gift e.g. from family. Same as would apply if friends or family give you an asset, it can then be depreciated if using for income generating purposes.

Unless you're likely to be audited (which would mean other, more significant flags), I'd say there's little issue with claiming things bought with free vouchers on tax.

              • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: I agree. It's your money after all. You could have bought a playstation or a s*x doll but you bought a laptop which allowed you to work with the giftcard instead (apart from dodgy sights unless you work on OF) so why should the tax man bother about how you spent your money. You are only claiming depreciation of an asset

                • @Royale with cheese: What if you win a PC worth 8k, can you claim 50% for work? XD

                  • @donkeydoc: I don't see a reason why not. I imagine it may be an overkill for my work but some may justify. And you never get 100% back, just the depreciation so go for it if you can afford

    • +4

Thank you, just sat in MS Calc myself. Seems a bit high. Lots of data, sure but I kinda am averse to $50 a month.

I'd prefer $20 a month and a smaller JB card TBH.
(or smaller data!) either way too pricey.

    • Only if you really want to buy something from JB Hifi

      • +1

If you apple fan then it doesnt matter where you buy (e.g jbhfi) the price diff is not so much

  • +26

    2 years contract? Nah

    • +33

Well they aren't going to give you a $1200 gc on a 12m/$99 plan lol

      • +6

I’ve seen stranger things happen ^^ just less likely

        • +5

Yes, I got a free iPhone 12 mini with a $40 per month plan for 2 years. So altogether I paid $960 over 2 years, and the phone is worth similar amount. So the plan is basically free. It comes with 40G per month.

          • @crazyrichasians: That’s a real OzBargain right there

          • +1

@crazyrichasians: Was there a deal posted on here for this?

          • @crazyrichasians: I got the iPhone 12 mini on the 99x12month, sold the mini for a grand, and so only had to pay my phone bill 2 months for the year.
I'm back on woolworths for a month waiting for another decent 12month plan deal.

On top of that, I found 1 month of my phone bill was nothing but work calls, and so all 12 months was just tax deducted.

            • @2023: Telstra? Should have asked for the $10-20 a month port in credit too

              • @srhardy: Yep the Jb hifi deal in June last year.

I tried about 5 times for the port in cdedit but no one would budge so I gave up.
People seem to get pretty lucky with it, I didn't have the time or energy to waste.

      • +1

        Now that'd be a deal!!

      • Exactly.
$1200 is pretty enticing but I don't need a $99/m phone plan. If they allowed any plan, I would have taken the bait.

  • Any chance for $20 credit back?

    • Give it a try via Telstra chat.

      • I don't understand how this works. You've already locked yourself into a 2y contract with them so why would they give you a discount?

I assume you do the negotiating before you sign the contract?

        • R14 was referring to the $10/$20 per month port in credit

          • -1

@BargainsGrabber: Can you provide some details about how that port in credit might work?

I ring up and say 'I am already legally forced to pay you $99 a month but will you be nice and let me pay $79 a month instead for no reason at all?'

            LIke I said, I don't understand this.

            • +1

@B3: There’s plenty of ppl across multiple JB Telstra deal posts have got their port in credit. Just hop onto the Telstra chat and say that I’m porting my number across and my mate has received xx amount of port in credit. You could be lucky on your first try but it depends on the Telstra live chat agent. If it doesn’t work, keep trying until you get an agent that allows

Something along those lines. Good luck!

              • +1

@BargainsGrabber: OK. Thanks for the explanation.

                • +1

@B3: Basically, you have to use any type of excuse to get the $20 credit, it is at the discretion of the Telstra operator to give it to you.

Once you get an operator who doesn’t care if they should or should not give the credit to you, then you’ve hit the jackpot for securing the $20 credit. So it is up to you to be polite enough and claim any type of excuse that makes them believe you should get it.

Anyway, after I realised this, I no longer call up for the $10-20 credit, this is because it is not a rule they should give you that credit, you are just hassling the Telstra operator until one of them decides to give it to you.

So essentially get a free iPhone 12 with a $49/m for 2 years?

iPhone 12 sale value in 2 years probably 550+ still..

    $49x24=$1176, minus $550ish = $626

    $626 / 24 months = $25.98 per month

    Not tooooooo bad

    • +3

Isn't the plan $99 per month?

If you are selling the gift card to reduce the monthly costs, how do you end up with the free iphone?

    • +3

Made a mistake with your maths.
$49 is the after-gc cost. So it’s more like free iPhone 12 with $99/m for 2 years.
Again using your maths but corrected.
      $99x$24=$2352 minus $550ish= $1800
      $1800/$24= $75pm

    • +10

EDIT: My math off, see comment below.

This is why I'm on a boost plan for $150 a year 😂

    • -1

This is only a deal if you got something to buy from JB and cheaper. Plus JB usually sux at price matching. It's a trap.

      • Or if your paying around the same amount currently.

  • +2

    Yeah nah

  • +21

This is click bait…. You should add 24 months contract in the title

    • +4

Yeah, I was really expecting no contract month to month 🥲

  • Sheeeeettttt i just took up the $800 offer last week

    • Call them up and see if they can give another $400 gift card for the difference?

      • They don't have to as customer is already signed up

  • +1

Too bad the $49 do not have 5G.

    • It really does you'll get an offer a few weeks in.

  • What's the best way to churn this $1200 for cash or cashback on a card?

  • +1

what's the exit fee if bailing out early?

    • +1

What happens when I cancel my plan early?
You'll need to pay an Early Termination Charge (ETC) equal to 50% of your monthly fee for the months (or part months) remaining in your plan term. The maximum ETC for your plan is set out in the above table. In addition to this, you'll also need to reimburse Telstra for any vouchers you received for entering into your plan. This Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee is pro-rated, equal to the total amount of the base voucher divided by 12 and multiplied by months (or part months) remaining in your plan term. This charge will appear on your Telstra bill, the maximum of which is also set out in the table.

  • +1

What mobiles are $0 upfront in the $99 plan??

EDIT: apologies, just read BYO plan only. Thanks, I'll pass

  • Wow two years? Even jb give away 1200 voucher, they always win this game.

  • Can I get this offer as an existing Telstra customer (out of contract) ?

    • +1

I don't believe so however in the same situation and tempted to port out

  • Does it have international roaming?

    • No, just standard International Day Pass.

  • +1

Just got an email from Telstra changing my plan from 80gb to 160gb but price increasing from $65 to to $68. That's the 2nd plan change they have forced in less than 12 months. Luckily still getting $20 credit, but have had to manually apply for it each month after billing with is a pain.

    • How to apply $20 credit manually?

    • I have no idea why people deal direct with Telstra and Floptus, obviously don’t like saving money

      • +6

        Their bits and bytes are shinier, plus the flog value;

"I'm with a broken down old ex-Government monopoly that has been privatised twice to the detriment of the Australian public."

"Really, darling. I'm with a Singapore Government owned group so all the profits flow straight out of the country."

        "What about me?"

        "SHUT UP Vodafone/TPG!"

      • Quality of service mostly, although I do it via Boost.

Maybe they have fixed their game now, but for example I personally experienced Vodafone making it appear that a call was ringing but it never actually rang the persons mobile due to congestion.

Optus I wouldn't touch as I have had multiple billing mistakes in the past that always seem to be in their favour.

        • I have had a tonne of their providers over the years, Boost, Moose, Aldi, TPG, Amaysim etc.

The only issues I have EVER had have been directly with Telstra and Optus. Optus were okay with fixing my issue, With Telstra I took to TIO, hopeless and never ever ever again!

    • What’s the eligibility requirement for $20 credit? Thanks

  • So is this 300gb a month or 200gb a month?

    • -1

      Bonus data ends 31/08/22.

You get 300GB til 31/08/22 after which it will be 200GB/month.

      • +3

Doubt that. Usually means if you sign up before 31/8/22 you get the bonus data for the rest of contract.

    • Just signed up. It's 300GB for entire contract

  • +2

    OK, I pay $2400 and get a phone and a two-years plan.
The most I pay for my mobile in the past two years was $15 a month. So the two-year plan is only worth $360 for me.
Can I get a $2000 phone with the $1200 gift card?

    • You can get whatever you want with it
I got a iPhone 13 pm last deal

    • +1

Sure, as long as you have another $800 cash to go along with it

  • -1

If only they did the $30 monthly discount

  • -1

These type of plans are great for work deductions isn't it. You can claim the whole amount and keep the gift cards for yourself without declaring it.

    • +1

Then take the gift cards to buy a phone/tablet/laptop etc and salary sacrifice it.

    • +1

I hope you are keeping the requisite records to prove 100% business use.

      • -2

Only need 1 month itemised phone bill showing all work related calls.

You could just buy a 1month prepaid for personal calls on a second sim.

  • Prob can't add any international call packs either if that's important.

  • +3

Sounds profitable, pay 'MINIMUM PLAN COST $2376 OVER 24 MONTHS' and get $1200

  • Lol already signed up $99 qantas optus.. might jump after 3 months time

  • Any deals on mobile broadband?

$600 JB gift card on the $69/month for 24 months

      • Would Telstra block the SIM/reduce speed, if sim is used in their 4g Telstra WiFi modem, effectively hitting 200gb every month?

        • The speed will drop once you use up your data allowance.

  • Why doesn’t Telstra allow data share on Jb plans? I would of got this if they did

    • JB still use the old Telstra Siebel billing system which doesn’t allow data sharing, among many other things. It’s supposed to transition over to Console which Telstra themselves use, “soon”. Whether they’ll allow data sharing though..who knows.

  • -2

i got this deal last year for 12 months with $1200 gift card. i ended up getting an iPhone mini for for $79 ($1279 - $1200 gift card)

how long do i have to port out until i can port back into telstra to snag a better deal coming up soon?

    • I think it was 30 days outside of Telstra N/W (incl. Boost etc)

    • +1

How did this happen? $99 for 12 months is less than the voucher…

    • Was that deal posted on Ozb before?

    • It's impossible. If this deal exist there will be like 5000+ upvote.

  • We won’t see any amazingly good deals now until November/December so chill out
