  • To max this out you need to spend $2000 to get $100 back. Will require some creativity as it excludes supermarkets and petrol stations

    • +1

department stores are included so myer, david jones?

      • +3

Some Myer still sells Coles Myer group gift card. Can buy that, then shop at Coles or buy petrol at Coles Express if needed

    • Was hoping post bill pay might count, doesn't look like it. Will stay tuned for ideas from others.

        Westfield GCs ;)

        • Nice like your thinking, can you use at Aus post?..

Westfield Gift Cards are redeemable wherever EFTPOS is available* both inside and outside Westfield centres, providing access to a world of shopping, dining and entertainment experiences for the recipient.

          https://support.westfield.com.au/hc/en-us/articles/360039885…

Although digging… Aus Post can refuse EFTPOS

          Australia Post
Australia Post officially do not allow you to use EFTPOS gift cards to pay for any bills via Post Billpay at Australia Post offices (for some reason), and they have trained their staff to stop customers from doing this.

However, Australia Post has not set up their POS system to block you from doing this, so if you’re lucky (like me recently) and can find a staff member at a post office who is happy for you to use EFTPOS gift cards to pay for a bill, you can get away with it.

I’m referring to the OnlyONE Visa Green gift card(officeworks.com.au) that is not restricted to a specific Merchant Category Code (MCC). This probably does not include the OnlyONE Visa gift cards that can only be used at specific MCCs (e.g. the OnlyONE Visa gift cards in this deal). ↩

Another OzBargainer told me last week they were unable to use an EFTPOS gift card to pay for an eBay gift card at Woolworths, which is rather surprising. ↩

          • @ComfortablyNumb: Both Westfield gc & Only1 u mention has fee, negating the cashback. So not sure why u want to do that

            • @hanofee: If you can get a big enough card it would negate the fee.

              • @JIMB0: Not really. If u want to go Only1 route, the biggest card is only $500. With like $6 fee. The Westfield itself also has around $5-$6 fee from memory. Assuming u can buy Only1 with Westfield gc (I don't know as Woolies is rather strict when paying giftcard), yes, u'd still be ahead as 5% of $500 is $25, but ur not saving much (~2.5%) for the trouble.
Buying ebay card is even worse, as u can easily get 5% ebay gc anyway (or possibly more, if ur not in a rush).

                • +1

@hanofee: The Westfield card fee is $2.95 but the website only lets you order a $200 card. I'm sure you can do $500 when buying in the centre.

Gift cards work. If you have access to one of the gift card schemes through health insurance nib/HBF etc. or Superannuation, employment or Macquarie Bank etc. then you're golden. Lifestyle Rewards comes out under MCC 5947 Card, Gift, Novelty and Souvenir Shops, so you can buy Colesworth/Caltex gift cards up the yinyang and they all count.
      https://www1.citibank.com.au/credit-cards/cashback-5/MCCs

      • How do u know the exact MCC of certain store (say that Lifestyle Rewards) btw? As it'd depend on how they sent their account, right?

        • You make a purchase, wait for it to appear on your account and then ask Citibank CSR in online chat. They will tell you the MCC number

          • @Legoman: And then please share the results with fellow OzBargainers

  • Does Aust post include as well?

  • +2

We could do with a page in the forums or the wiki that lists merchants and MCC

    Is there one?

At the moment there are bits and pieces here and there on individual deals - such as https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/698763

Offers based on MCC seem to be frequent - search Ozbargain for MCC merchant and you will see what I mean.

A forum or wiki page independent of any individual deal that lists major merchants against MCC will soon become a useful resource across multiple deals.

    • Would also be useful for the restaurant gift card

      • @Legoman that lists the MCCs covered by the offer, but not which merchants map onto which MCC

        • +2

No, but it tells you the MCC's that are valid for the 5% cashback offer. The Citibank CSR in online chat will tell you what MCC your charges are processed as, then you cross-reference that number with the list and if there's a match, then you're golden. So buy a small giftcard or something you're going to want or need anyway, then check the MCC with Citibank. If it matches, then buy another $2,000 of the same thing and you've maxed out the offer

          • @Legoman: @Legoman - not sure why you start your comment with "No". I think we are in agreement.

I agree that the URL you referenced tells you the MCCs that are valid for the 5% cashback offer.

You agree that this on its own doesn't tell you which merchants map onto those MCC. You propose a solution: "The Citibank CSR in online chat will tell you what MCC your charges are processed as, then you cross-reference that number with the list"

Your solution sounds good to me. And I would add that it would be good if anyone who has that chat with a Citibank CSR could post on OzBargain the findings - in good OzBargain spirit to share our collective learnings.

What’s the salary to get approved?

  • Opted in

  • I think the difference between this offer and Hiver account, with Citi you earn points but has a minimum purchase of $500 whilst Hiver no points but no min purchase

    • also this is for 1 week

      • Oh wow, just realise that now.

    • True, this has more restrictions in that you need to own a Citi credit card firstly, and spend at least $500 in a week. On the other hand, Hiver is technically just for essential workers.

  • If you qualify for and have both Citi and Hiver, and spend enough in the right places, you can get maximum benefit from both. Citi in one week. Hiver over a Jan-Dec calendar year.

  • +1

What we’re really after is shopping for Giftcard’s at shops that’s eligible for the cash back.

    • Especially if you can "double dip" to buy gift cards at a discount or with cashback, and then pay with the Citi credit card and get further cashback.

I believe you can do that with the Hiver offer and online Woolworths cards if you qualify for Hiver and have a method of buying discounted Woolworths gift cards.

Anywhere like that where this Citi offer would work?

      • Unlikely. Only Coles and Woolworths do regular discounted gift cards, and supermarkets are excluded from the offer.

        • +2

I just bought $500 worth of both Coles and Woolworths gift cards through nib Rewards from my health insurance. 3% off on the Coles ones and 4% off on the Woolworths ones, bought with Citibank Premier card, came out under MCC code 5947 which is included in the Citibank 5% cashback scheme. Only problem is that Coles limit gift card purchases to a max of only $500/wk, otherwise I would have just maxed it out there and bought $2,000 worth.

  • Would this work for Samsung edu store?

  • So would this include all eBay and all amazon if I don’t buy gift cards?

    • Why not buy eBay and Amazon gift cards? That way you get the discount on the gift card purchase AND the 5% cashback from Citibank

      • Where can we get discounted eBay & Amazon gift card?

          • @Legoman: Would Macquaire included on the scheme though ?

            • @yht: No it wouldn't apply for the Citibank 5% scheme because you can't pay for Macquarie gift cards with a Citibank credit card at least as far as I know, but for the purposes of your question which was just where can you buy eBay gift cards, the answer is Macquarie Rewards. If the question had been where can I buy eBay gift cards AND have that purchase credited towards the Citibank cashback offer bizzo, then I don't know that answer.

          • @Legoman: How to know that nib rewards’s MCC? Does it show up on the app/internet banking?

            • @hanofee: No, I bought some gift cards on Monday, waited for the transactions to finalise and not be pending, then contacted Citibank online chat and asked them to confirm the MCC they were recorded under. They told me 5947

  • just opted-in, it's still open.

  • does anyone know if you have 2 citibank credit cards if offer is applied to both or is it only one you can use?

    • +1

T&Cs say spend by primary and additional credit cardholders on the account will count towards the offer.

  • Does anyone know whether gift card purchase from ShopBack will be eligible for cashback? Thanks in advance!

    • +9

Great news, I just checked tonight as made a purchase Shopback gift card purchase 31/7 to verify the MCC… they said:
      Citirep:
The merchant is categorised as Department Stores.

ok do you have the actual Id please?
Need to check qualifies for cashback promotion
      Citirep:
Yes, General Merchant Category Code is 5311.

(FYI, not that I think it will matter, but I bought IKEA and Amart gift cards)

SO - Bring on the shopback discount gift cards :)

      • Great…thanks!

      • Wow, this is awesome, good timing to stack with this (probably will OOS quick though):
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/716830
Bought JB giftcard that I happen to have something to buy today. Many thanks

      • +8

I have just checked with Citibank live chat this morning

ShopBack giftcard is 5311 under the category 'Department Stores'
CashRewards giftcard is 5734 under the category 'Computer Software Stores'

Both are eligible to the citibank cashback

        • Anyone knows, what’s the biggest Coles giftcard we can exchange with Shopback superswap? Today is the last day, thinking to just stock the superswap card. 2% + 5% is rather decent

  • +1

Anyone know if Amazon would be included for this?

    • Doesn't look like it, I just tried to verify today and they told me Amazon MCC is 5411

  • will a Bundll card payment count?

  • +1

It will be hard to actually know which ones are in or not. As we don't know the exact category for most of them. Even something like Telstra is no guarantee to be eligible. Same for Amazon, Shopback, etc. And we won't know if they are until much later (might take 60 days after just to know)

    • +1

I agree @hanofee. We need to document someone the outcomes after the event - what worked, what didn't - for reference next time. We need collective learning from experience.

  • Need to spend up to $2000 by the 7th to take advantage of this offer.

Can't think of what to buy.

Does anyone know where I can get gift cards that qualify for the 5% cashback?

Amazon? ShopBack? Coles Myer cards from Myer?

    • nib Rewards health insurance. Of course you need to have nib health insurance to qualify. APIA doesn't count even though APIA is just a frontend for nib, but APIA doesn't have access to the rewards scheme

      • Yes I have NIB.

Do you mean like - buying wish gift cards via NIB Rewards?

        • Yes. Wish giftcard for Dan Murphys/Big W, Woolworths gift cards for Woolworths supermarkets, Coles giftcards, Fuel giftcards for Caltex and whatever else in there takes your fancy (there are a lot available in nib Rewards). All of them will be processed under MCC 5947 I was told by Citibank CSR. So they all count towards the 5% cashback deal. I've already maxed out one credit card with the $2K spend today. I'll do the other tomorrow

  • Can we do say 5 x $100 transactions? Or must a minimum transaction be at least $500?

    • +1

It's cumulative for the week, can be as many transactions/retailers, but the total need to be minimum of $500 to get something out of it

  • Does Woolworths gift card online work (https://giftcards.woolworths.com.au/) ?

    • +1

Pretty sure the Woolworths gift card portal comes up as Groceries so it wouldn't work for this offer.

      • +1

Yes, Woolworths gift card portal definitely would fall as Groceries, as some of us already tried that with Hiver on the other deal (it works fine for Hiver)

        • so are you saying buying a a gift card via Woolworths gift card portal wont count? what about buying one instore then or is that still Groceries not retail?

          • +1

@coolsteps: Big W would count, but there's no discount on them there.

  • +2

    Citi chat told me that:

    1. the MCC of Aus Unity Health Wellness Rewards is 5747, which qualifies. (Relevant for any Aus Unity Health Members looking to stack with this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/716327 ); and

    2. the MCC of my employer's rewards program, which uses Reward Gateway, is 8999, which does not qualify.

    • +1

Good news! Thanks for that. My employer used Rewards Gateway too, but recently stopped which kicked me off it. Now I use my health insurance fund rewards program instead (which turns out to be even better value) and its MCC is included in the Citibank offer, so win for me all round.

  • +2

In the spirit of documenting MCC codes per some comments already here.

    • The MCC of MYER for in-store transactions is 5311, which qualifies. At time of this comment, this includes Coles Myer gift cards purchased in-store.
  • +1

    Prezzee is MCC 5399

  • +2

AGL Rewards, which is processed through 'Signature Rewards', is 5999: "Miscellaneous and Specialty Retail Stores". This is one of the MCCs that qualifies.

    • +1

AGL Rewards??!?!?! Is that a thing? I'm an AGL customer! How do I not know about this?

Thanks for the tip! With this info I've just maxed the offer out on two credit cards. Stupid nib Rewards won't let you spend more than $2,500 in a single week, so just maxed it out on Coles giftcards from AGL instead. Only 2% discount, but with the Citibank 5% on top, still worth it.

  • Anyone know if ebay will be part of this? Trying to call Citibank but can't reach staff. Thanks

    • +1

Probably easier to buy ebay gift card from Shopback, Cashrewards or other rewards that others confirmed to be included on the list above? Also, 5% on ebay is not much (compare to their normal giftcard deal)

      • Thanks. I have checked with Citibank. MCC for Shopback can be varied by the underlying giftcard i think since they were 5814 which i thought when i bought uber eat gift card and 5816 when i bought shopback gift card. Anyway, i took a risk buying ebay gift card so hopefully it's ok.
Ebay MCC is 5311 for whoever wonder so it's qualified :)

        • Oh true, Shopback does have a few MCCs. I bought the Ultimate gift cards & JB Hifi ones, and the Citi CS confirmed me, it was 5311
