@[Deactivated]: "pixel fan boi hates the new pixel" 😱

                      • -1

@wombat81: Don't take his review personally, he just doesn't want people to make the same mistake you did.

    • MKBHD review on Pixels are absolutely terrible, and is super Samsung fanboy. There are many, many other reviews that are overwhelmingly extremely positive. It literally doesn't matter if he's said positive things about pixel in the past - this is what is happening now.

His main arguments basically boil down to

      • not 90/120hz, so laggy

But this applies to all 60hz phones and literally 99% of the population don't care or notice or actually even prefer 60hz due to the better battery (and have only used 60hz on past with no issues)

Somehow Samsung with terrible battery at 2x the price gets glowing recommendations just because it is 120hz ultra battery drainer. Why? No reason. Has almost exactly the same speed and size as this pixel 6A as well as a pixel having a better camera and battery life as well as a processor that is on par

And a phone with 60hz gets bashed for being 60hz just because it is 60hz lol.

Can't even remember what other criticisms he had because that's all he was saying - no wireless charging, but a phone can't have everything, especially budget range.

If you focus on literally the only two features phone doesn't have while ignoring the other 100 pros as well as the price, you will always be able to nitpick and find issues..

You know your issues aren't real when you can't name any alternatives in the same price range. A budget Samsung A that is even more expensive than Pixel on sale with a laggy dirt level processor is not a real alternative - you just have a laggy phone with a worse camera that is not even cheaper lol

This sums up MKBHD's opinion perfectly - https://youtu.be/32ajro8kAiU

This a good upgrade from S10e? Or should I wait for a s22 deal again

    • +2

I was on the same boat and consider this phone before.
After reading some reviews, I went with s22 instead.

      Reasons on choosing s22:
      . Better photo quality
. Snapdragon is better than Tensor (modified exynos)
. Fingerprint sensor debacle on pixel 6 series

    • +1

I think both would be pretty good upgrades, depends which features you prefer.

I'm also coming from an s10e, but ended up buying a xiaomi last week. I probably would have gone for this deal if I waited…

    • i wouldnt buy a phone with an under screen fingerprint scanner. they are annoying

  • Wow. Crazy good price on this. I picked one up on launch day and definitely no regrets. Its a fantastic phone for the money

    • Mine seems OK but having tons of problems with Bluetooth disconnecting from my Fitbit for no apparent reason.

This price drop is pretty bloody annoying though; it's been only a few weeks. I am tempted to try a return and see if I can re-order!

      • +1

Did you buy it on credit card? Price protection?

      • that's very unusual. I have a P6Pro (same chipset) and FitBit Sense and there are zero issues with Bluetooth Connectivity.

  • +1

Great price! My brother bought it the other day and had a play with it. Love the stock android experience and was blazing fast.

    • +6

I really wish Samsung would sell a stock Android version of their phones (like the old Galaxy Nexus). I like Samsung hardware but their Android skin is still mostly bloatware.

      • +1

OneUi is Samsung's "defining" feature on all of their phones. Great hardware, but terrible software (P6Pro user and ex Samsung owner)

    • especially when you turn animations off or down to .5x

  • +3

I really like the Pixel phones, but my P6P has had so many teething issues wrt Wi-Fi and cellular signal. I would suggest caution with buying a Pixel. Buy it if you are patient and can deal with the potential issues and useless Google phone support because you like the useful features and excellent camera.

    • Do you have any issue with your network completely dropping out? (Has exclamation mark on the bars) I have to keep resetting my signal and it's very annoying, only started happening recently

      • I had this
Got my money back and have temp downgraded to 6a and has none of the '!' issues .
Im actually enjoying the 6a , really miss optical zoom though

        • May I ask which retailer you purchased from and did they give you any trouble trying to return it for a full refund?
I purchased from JB and my phone is probably 8 months old now, wouldn't mind getting a new replacement, I do really like the phone

          • +1

@portard: It was purchased direct from Google
As it was deemed not fit for purpose due to the network dropouts they agreed on a full refund and I return the phone

      • Exactly. Earlier this year had about 2 months where Wi-Fi was completely broken too. In 2022, we shouldn't have showstopper bugs like this and they should be fixed within days, not weeks.

      • I have noticed this with my P6Pro within only the last week or so. I'm with Boost. I have rung Google customer service and apparently it is a software issue they are aware of, and "they are working on it with the highest priority" and it will be fixed in a future software update
They have sent me a link for an official bug report.

I bought my phone through JB HiFi, am considering seeing what they can do to help

        Hmmm.

        • Yeah, I've also only noticed it in the last week or two, and particularly when driving around and I presume it is having trouble switching between base stations. It doesn't always happen though. Hard to pin point. I am going to persist with the phone because it is not the end of the world. I'm just close to considering going to the dark side and buying a fruit phone.

          • +1

            @JayR78: don't do it !! - stay strong, stay fructose free !!

        • +1

I had this problem recently on Woolworths Mobile. I fixed it by setting 4G as the preferred network type:

Settings -> Network and Internet -> SIMs -> Preferred Network Type -> 4G.

          • @Army: Thanks for the tip, Army - I'll give it a go.
But we shouldn't have to do this, should we! And by doing this we miss out on the speed (anything else?) advantages of 5G

      • P6Pro user here. I'm on Telstra network (Boost) and have zero issues with network connectivity (Android 12, July release). My fingerprint reader is also perfect, so, I must be one of the lucky owners with a defect-free phone.

    • +2

6a is fine so far, 2 weeks in.

    • I also had similar issues. Google acknowledged these issues as software issues and asked for bug reports which I did provide, but who knows how long this could go on for?

Having to restart my phone due to losing data connectivity (Wi-Fi and 5G) multiple times a day got old very quickly. Telstra refunded my hardware repayments and let me keep the phone. I am now using the Pixel Experience ROM on a Poco F3 that I bought for a decent price and couldn't be happier.

      • +1

The phone is approaching 1 year old. This should have been dealt with long ago. My problem with claiming warranty is I have to send it back and wait. In the meantime, what phone am I going to use? These things are such a part of our lives now, we really need a loan device just like when you take your car in for service, or something to solve the problem of being without a phone in the short term. Apple have this kind of thing covered.

I am a huge Android fan and have been using Android phones ever since my first experience with the iPhone 3G put me off Apple completely. But now I am looking at how the landscape has changed. I don't like Samsung phones and I don't want a Chinese phone, so what are my options now? I have nothing left but the iPhone I think.

      • Yes! I'm having the same issues and it's so annoying, going into the office and switching over to the office wifi and when I leave everything drops out. Turning the network off and on again only helps sometimes, most times I have to restart the phone.
And I always get error prompts stating that there's a system delay or something. Very annoying.
Can I ask how did you report the issue to Telstra/Google?
Had high hopes for the P6Pro but am really disappointed with it so far.

        • Contacted Google. Spoke with their Support team on Friday. The sincerity in the guy's voice, you can tell he cares so much (sarcasm). Was told to run phone in safe mode for a bit to test and if that didn't work, factory reset. I said I am not interested in doing this troubleshooting because this is clearly a global problem and others have said it does nothing. Got a call back on Saturday from another guy who also had lots of sincerity in his voice and concern for my problem (he was reciting a script). He acknowledged that this is a known issue and affecting some people globally. Said it would be fixed in a future update. It took them months to fix the Wi-Fi issues in the past. I think we just have to hang tight or ditch the Pixel and get a Samsung or Apple.

          • @JayR78: "it would be fixed in a future update"
It's been 10 months since the phone was released. Maybe he meant "it would be fixed in future phone update"? :-)

          • @JayR78: I got the phone last November and there's been several system updates since then. The system UI error is still there, and the network issue is something new. How many Google engineers does it take to fix a system error?

      • Did you just lodge a ticket with Telstra regarding the phone?

    • +1

Bought a pixel 6A on release, returned it the day after - poor signal quality even when connected to the same cell tower (measured using -dBm readings than my old One Plus 6)

Reddit is full of Pixel 6/6A owners complaining of poor reception

    • +1

For that reason pixel 5 still is the king

  • Moving from 90/120Hz refresh rate to 60Hz can be a difference. Else phone looks good and good price point too. But those who haven't used 60/120Hz resolution before, won't feel any difference.

    • +3

Noticable for a couple of days then you get used to the 60hz again

  • +1

Seem nobody buy at full price.

For anyone getting stuck on Whatsapp when restoring backup to the Pixel 6, 6 pro and 6a here is the fix:

    • +5

Thank God I moved on from WhatsApp to Signal…

      • +2

Issue is getting more users on that platform

        • I hear you…been pushing my friends to move over to signal, now started to get more tractions.
Now, that's for friends; family is a different story *sigh

      • +1

Telegram is also an option. Only problem is parents and other older family members don't want to learn "new tech".

        • +1

yea, it took a while to convert them from SMS to WhatsApp; it'll be even longer to convert them to Telegram/Signal…

  • Pretty good deal! I wonder if this will stack with the additional 10% off for google one subscribers

  • Pixels are frustrating. By now I'd hope most of the bugs are ironed out so better than buying it newly released, but with the next update there's bound to be more.

  • I wish google could sell the 5a - its bascially the same price try to buy it new

  • +1

That's a quick price drop, saw they were dropping OS. It doesn't do Google any favours on pre-orders for next time. I'd be mighty peeved if I paid $749 from Google. I grabbed a couple during the HN $150 deal and they threw in 2 Google cases and the 30W charger so still ahead. Was a pain getting used to the front FPS after the rear one on the 3a but all good now.

    • this guy bought from Harvey lets neg em lol

      • I see we have Harvey supporters negging me

        • maybe they just love your username!

      • +1

Don't worry, it killed me to do it. ;)

  • is there a $300 trade in offer? only seems to be for US?

  • Wouldn't the Xiaomi mi 11i be better than this and around $150 cheaper?

    • UI bloat with Xiaomi

      • Can't you flash it to a google rom without the boat ergo far better device than pixel6a?

        • +1

          Yes but time/researche/effort

  • I have recently noticed with iPhones, when you take screenshots (of say websites etc.) and save the photo into your phone, and when you open the photo in your phone, you can highlight words in the photo to copy and paste elsewhere if you wish.

Does anyone know if this feature is also available in Pixel phones, or more generally any Android phones? Also, does this feature have a name?

    • +6

Google Lens has that feature (built into Google Photos) and on Pixels (and maybe other Android phones) you can directly copy text from the app switching interface.

      • -1

        Thanks!

Do you know how this feature is even possible? Is it using say AI in the background?

        • +3

Yes, it's AI. The technology has been on PC's for a long time and it's now on mobile phones.

          • +1

@vrsac: Ok thanks, somehow I am behind times. Think maybe I see how it works now. Image recognition in the background -> image2text -> format text to allow copy & paste.

            • @ilovefullprice: might even be able to translate foreign text in a similar way

              • @shmahoo: Like locally on your phone (without any add-on software or apps)?

                • +1

@ilovefullprice: Google lens has translation built into it.

Super handy trying to use the TaoBao app on my S21, just take a screenshot then use lens to translate what's on screen. Obviously this uses the internet to access google translate, idk if the built in translation stuff on Pixel can do it locally though

      • TIL… Been using a pixel 2 and now a pixel 6 and never knew this

  • Did they fix the fingerprint scanner issue? where any finger can unlock it

    • +4

It was never a thing. Only early reviewers looking for clicks ever claimed that.

      • I have had a brand new Pixel 6 for a couple of weeks now and the fingerprint sensor is the worst I have ever had, while it doesn't unlock the phone with any finger, still it is slow and very much hit-miss, I find myself having to input the passcode at least 5-6 times a day due to the sensor failing to recognise my finger. I tried everything, and registered the same finger multiple times, no luck.

Still, not quite a deal breaker that makes me whish I bought another phone , but still very much annoying.

I should add I have a tempered glass screen protector on, but it's the one approved by Google and it's not an excuse for the fingerprint sensor to be so bad.

Just price matched over the phone with officeworks; $569.05

Muppets in store wouldn't do it because there is no model number listed on the google website.

    • Can it be done with online? Or yo go instore to pick up

      • No officeworks price match online.

Did it over the phone for click and collect.

      • I got the same price match in store, so YMMV.

    • Thanks!! This should really be in the title of this deal as it makes it even better. I just picked up one from officeworks as well

  • Any thoughts on alternative phone like the Samsung A73.

Allphones (Ebay) listed for Ebay Plus Members w/ code: PAUG12 for $549.78, w/ Express Delivery.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/165425022562

    • "Any thoughts on alternative phone like the Samsung A73."

Will depend on what you look for in a phone, if camera is important the 6A would be the better choice. If you value having a larger high refresh rate screen, large battery & expandable strorage then the A73 might be better suited to your needs.

      • What if I want all of those? How bad is the camera in the A73?

        • Then buy a better (ie dearer) phone. As for how bad it is look up reviews and decide for yourself.

This is bit cheaper if you have the code.

  • +1

Just called my local OW and asked if they will price match, told me yep so heading there to get a phone for the wife… Thanks for the post OP

    • pricematch with JB and get free pixel buds?

      • is it confirmed that they will do? From what i have read its a little hit and miss..

Edit: called me local store said not valid cause that free pixel buds were only if the phone was pre ordered. Either way i didnt the email so not sure how i can claim without the code… I guess if you can get it do it quick until they catch on…

Edit edit: confirmed with online chat as well to get the free buds you need to have pre ordered or get the code from the email (which for some reason i never got).

Either way for $570 for the phone im happy with that.

        • Hi I called JB they would only price match. How did you get it for $570?

    • Ops silly me. You mentioned OW. I rang them and they offered $570. Thanks anyway

  • +2

undoubtly the best value phone at the moment - with stock android and no bloatware

  • +1

Thanks OP, prime matched at JB (had gift voucher to use). Great first post!

  • now we're talking!

  • Hi does anyone know how long this offer last? Can't find this info anywhere. Cheers

    • No nothing, get 'em while they're hot. ;)

      • Gotcha thanks :)

  • How do you think this compares with the S21FE? I just got it tor 630 at OW but it's still in its box…

    • +1

S21FE is definitely a great phone but personally I would go for the pixel as I prefer the stock android experience. Not a big fan on one UI.

On a different note, do you know how long this offer last for the pixel 6a?

      • August 21 according to another person's coupon picture. I never got a coupon though which is wierd!

        • This is for the JB hi-fi offer the coupon they posted I think. I'm referring to the Google store offer.

  • +1

Is this an upgrade from my oppo 10x Zoom in terms of responsiveness/battery life?
