Google has dropped the price on the Pixel 6a from $749 to $599. Seems to beat any current deals.

I donā€™t think itā€™s a deal, MKBHD, a totally Android fan says in his review that the 6A is terrible in display and fingerprint reader speed. I use to be a Nexus and Pixel user, Iā€™m pretty sure that the QC in Pixel is below average, not to mention the Samsung-made Tensor is worse than the Qualcomm.

    • +6

Disagree entirely. MKBHDs only criticism is that the phone is 60hz. For 99.99% of the normal population, 60hz is absolutely fine.. you can't really criticize a display for being 60hz if your brain is fried and you use 120hz on daily basis. That is a mental issue with yourself rather than reflecting the opinion of normal people who have been using 60hz phone all their life and don't care. I've gone from 60 to 120 and back to 60 and don't care either.. and I use a 144hz+ PC monitor like the rest of you

Fingerprint reader speed is fine. Literally reads fingerprint in seconds.

Samsung is 2x the price and has a very, very bad battery life. Also, you're comparing flagship price to budget.. the A series in same price range has dirt level processors lol

      Check out this review. https://youtu.be/32ajro8kAiU

      • +1

Also.. buying phones is all about what you can get for the alternative in same price range.

The only thing within this price range after free buds is the Samsung A series. But as mentioned, the processor is trash, and the pixel camera is better.

Nothing really comes close to what you can get in value for the $499 it was on sale with tradein. Even the current $599 with buds is amazing deal. Add gift cards and even better

Imo google hit it out of the park with the 6a, mainly because there are currently no real viable alternatives in the same price range for what you get

        • Wow, pixel fanboys everywhere, MKBHD said and I quote:
'it has some pretty serious off-access rainbowing.'
'But for whatever reason, the responsiveness and the actual smoothness of the display, this is not smooth…But even among these 60hz phones, I feel like this is one of the choppiest ones…you are way more likely to notice the dropped frames in animations all the time even at 60hz…normal stuff is just constantly slightly choppy'.
Do you think those arguments were netural or negative?
Btw, I only reckon stock android and computational photography from Pixel products. Never the QC

          • +2

@BitcoinKing: I hate the Pixel line. In fact, the 4 I got for free in a previous ozbargain deal is one of the worst phones I've ever owned. Despite the good camera at the time, too small and with one of the worst battery life ever.

So no, I am not a pixel fan. I've never owned a pixel aside from the 4. You sound like a MKBHD ultra fan more than I sound like a pixel fan..

There are no dropped frames whatsoever. He compared to an iphone 13 pro, which has a completely different iOS with different animations. Literally no difference on the 60hz between different Android phones. Have you tried or seen this yourself to confirm? I have, and the "choppiness" he refers to is literally just android animations being less smooth than iOS.. why would you show iOS iphone 13 pro as a comparison? Like wtf lol

The rainbowing is a common trait of OLED and only on white backgrounds at drastic angles. It is also a trait present in other OLED phones. Another thing that literally doesn't matter for 99.99% of the population.

Criticism really only matters if you have a better deal or phone or if it's a deal breaker aside "60hz choppy lol". As far as I'm concerned any downsides are a lesser of two evils situation unless you can name an alternative within the same price (and remember this also comes with pixel buds and jbhifi -10% GC useable..)

            • @takutox: I used to be a huge Nexus/Pixel fan, now I am wondering if MadeByGoogle can have better phones in the future, even if the whole HTC team was acquired by Alphabet. I donā€™t like Samsung, but if I have to choose between those two brands, I will get a A53 or S21FE.
The current strongest haters of Pixel most likely was a Pixel fan.

              • +1

@BitcoinKing: I have zero care for fanboying / not fanboying.

These are phones, not sports teams. Nor does a good phone in past make future phone good, or bad phone in past make new phone bad.

Facts are is that the camera and processor of 6a blow the a53 out of the water. A53 is slow as hell in performance and camera. I mean if all you care about is screen refresh rate then..

Again, I literally do not care one bit about whether you are a fanboy or not.

Pixel 4 was shit. Pixel 6a is actually good. I'd say even pixel 6 and pixel 6 pro are kinda meh for the price. Despite me not particularly ever liking the pixel line, you can't argue that at $499 previous deal a 6a is a bargain. No chance id downgrade to an a53 exynos just because of some weird brand hating / loving reason

It's also not fair to compare a phone that was $499 on release via jbhifi vs s21 fe which is $644 on discount a year later lol. Even then the pixel 6a battery, camera and processor is still better..

                • @takutox: Thank you for explaining, I might get one for my working phone.

                  • @BitcoinKing: It's refreshing to see a discussion on this thread which is not someone begging for a code. Ozbargain need a feature to hide those kind of messages… 95% of the thread

    • If mkblsd says so šŸ¤£

  • Please dm me if anyone got a spare buds code,

    Cheers

  • Please dm a buds code if anyone had a spare

  • Hello, Anyone has spare buds code pls to share? Thx

  • +1

Has anyone had any luck adding the coupon code once JB has given you the price match link? "Coupon does not apply to this basket"

    • The code doesn't work anymore as mentioned by the store representative. You can only use it with the original offer not with the price match.

  • Looking for a code as well please. Thanks.

  • Would very much appreciate if anybody had a spare JB buds coupon :) Thanks

  • If I can afford the extra for the 6P should I just get that? Or will the 6a be enough?

I have a dying 3a that needs replacing. Will the 6a be a better camera than the 3a by a lot?

    • +1

Aaaand I bought it. Slightly bigger than the 3a and I can't type properly hahah

  • Can confirm this deal does not stack with Unidays 10% off code. :(

  • +1

Hi All, want to gift my dad a phone. Howz Pixel6a compared to Samsung A73. A72 is $536 on ebay mobileciti store.

  • Hi if any one has a jbhifi code unused I'd gladly take it, not sure how much better this phone is than pixel 3xl ,but maybe time for an upgrade .

  • -3

Pixel 3 the only phone I RMAā€™d, also the only phone I RMAā€™d 4 times. Speaker issues, battery issues, overheating issues. Pixel is never a bargain, unless itā€™s free :D

  • +2

just got one the chat with jbhifi. They said they can only discount the phone and can't add Buds to the order. So either I use the coupon or pricematch

  • This or the Nothing Phone (1) if they were the same price? I know there are so many variables and different strokes for different folks etc but just curious what the buyers of the Pixel 6a here think?

    • +1

No personal experience, but from multiple reviews, nothing phone 1 has better battery, better screen, poorer camera, despite it being 50mp, can't compete with 6a for quality of image. Also the software experience and functionality for pixel is better, but nothing is pretty close to stock android. Glyph function is funky looking, but ultimately a wank feature.

For those who did a trade in with JB Hi-fi on their previous offer:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/713980

I managed to get the pixel 6a for $269 out of pocket.
I noticed that the $250 coupon code was valid till the 25th of August. I did a trade in of an apple iPhone 8 for $80 gift card and $250 coupon code. JB hi-fi price matched Google bringing the price down to $599. I was then able to apply the coupon code to bring the price down to $349. And finally used the $80 gift card to bring the price down to $269.

    • +2

You were also out of pocket an iPhone 8.

      • Yep, but was looking to upgrade the iPhone 8 anyway. It was my wife's phone and she was unhappy with the camera compared to my pixel 4a

      • But they freed up some space in a draw so it's even.

    • Could you please tell how do you ask Jb to price match? Did you buy it online? TIA

      • +1

I used the chat on JB hi-fi's website. They then sent a link to a checkout with the discounted phone in it

  • Has anyones phones turned up yet?
    Mine shipped today.

  • +1

Just got one from Officeworks for $569.05

  • I have a different quandary. Recently bought a pixel 6 pro 256gb for 800. Kid dropped it and screens broken.

Repair costs will be around 600 to ship to Sydney to fix under the official google repairer. Local repairer in Brisbane said they only have aftermarket parts and there will be a gap after the repair. Yeah no thanks.

Should I repair or just cut my losses and get this 6a instead.

  • +3

    That was a short sale

    • +3

So weird. I was going to pull the trigger but now I won't be at $749

    • Very short, unusual.

    • JB Hi-fi won't match any more either. Tried two.

    • +3

I complained to google online chat and they are offering me a 150 refund.

      • Can confirm this, just ordered through the Google website. Paid full price but they will refund $150 once the product has shipped.

        • care to explain on what you complained specifically?

      • ā€œComplainedā€ about what? That a sale ended?

        • In he chat box, I complained that the duration of the sale was too short ( 3 days ) and I did not have enough time to make a purchase ( I actually was too busy to ask Office Works for a price match ). I then was offered a $150 refund …

          • @tones123: Haha, good job, ā€œtoo shortā€ is that ozbargain 101? ;-)

Mine arrived today, pretty happy with the shipping time to rural WA.

          • @tones123: no complaining here, just asked nicely

        • Complained that it was such a short sale. I went to JB to pick one up and realised there that the sale ended. Google chat said it was taken down due to a "technical issue".

  • Has anyone got a screenshot from google website with the price or receipt of the purchase they can share?

  • Coming as $749 for me.

  • Google just cancelled my order. :(

  • +2

This will be $599 at JB from Thursday 25th.

    • Is that in their catalogue?

      • +3

In the Deals for Dads catalogue that hasn't gone out to general public yet.
Looks like being $599 till mid September.

  • +1

Back on sale at Google Store for $599 delivered

  • +1

FYI, got an email yesterday from google (titled xxx, you earned a reward inside your newsletter) with a 10% discount code for the P6a. $539, not too bad

    • do both discounts stack? I can only seem to get 10% off the $749 price.

      • +2

My bad, they don't stack. It takes 10% off $749 (…)
        Not today google, not today…

  • Just in time before the iphone 14!
