For Pixel 6A - "Software Update (Guaranteed) - Ends in 4 years and 11 months (31 Jul 2027)"

How is this bad? What other phone in this price range has such long support? I can only think of Samsung.

        • +21

I believe only Apple is better, and they're arguably not really comparable.

Google and Samsung are two of the best for android software support, don't know what this guy is talking about.

          • @snep: Also he doesn't know that Android has a thing called custom roms.

            • @urahara: I kind of doesn't anymore. Most bootloaders are permanently locked for most if not all manufacturers now.

              • @KLoNe: Is this very, very new? The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro seem to have been unlocked according to the xda forums. 6a hasn't yet but it's newer.

                • @DonWilson: Nah, you're right, Pixel is ideally the only phone that has some use being on XDA forums anymore.

      • +1

Are you, by any chance, an iPhone user?

    • +10

You do get major Android versions first, but I wouldn't say they're faster at fixing issues. That Widevine downgrade that lasted like a year for people comes to mind.

      • Do you know how long this Google store offer last? It's not specified on the store. Cheers

    • +6

Timely updates is not necessarily a good thing. As an example - the framework changes in Android 12 or 8 at the time broke so many apps and taken 6+ months to get back onboard. Even now, I'm holding off from moving to Android 12 since it breaks so many things on my current device now.

Google doesn't care that it will break things. They expect everyone to just fall in line and accept their stupid design decisions that doesn't always make sense.

    • +3

Not sure I can agree. My pixel 6 and many others have constant connectivity issues rendering it useless at basic phone functions

Google support has been saying since November las year that they are aware, working on a fix and will come in an update.

      Gave up recently

6A was only just released. It’s the mid tier brother and will remain current until mid-2023.

      • +6

and updates will be provided until 2027! (see above)

        • +2

S21 FE is current. It has not been superseded.

          • -5

@11112007: Yes but only in theory. It sold horribly only because it essentially got superceded by the s22 only a month after release.

Its so bad that samsung is considering shelving all future fe editions.

            • +2

@fuzor: They are different classes of phone though with different target markets

            • +2

@fuzor: It sold badly because it's a garbage phone.

            • +4

@fuzor: I'm not sure you know what "only in theory" means. In practice, the the real world it is current and not superseded.

    • +16

Yeah, I'm holding out for pixel 9

  • +1

This or Samsung galaxy s21 Fe?
Also would anyone know if there are discounted gift cards to pay for this?

    • +5

Get a price match at either OW or JB and use the promo from Woolies to pay it off if you’re getting from JB

    • +6

One benefit of getting a Samsung phone is if you need the phone repaired under warranty you can go to any of the brick and mortar Samsung stores to hand the phone in rather than trying to deal with whatever Google's process is. From experience Samsung are pretty easy to deal with for warranties as well.

      • Only if you buy from a brick and mortar store.
If you buy online, they will not repair it onsite and will send it off which may take 5 working days.

      • I had a horror story with some Samsung Buds under Samsung warranty. A real runaround. Hope they're better with phones.
Ended up just returning them back to Officeworks.

Google store is amazing at RMA.

I ordered a Pixel 3XL, 4 years ago. It had a few issues and they asked me to drop it off in the original packing with a printed label at any post office.

I got a replacement phone within 1 week. No issues. I think they sent the repalcement as soon as I lodged the first one to return to them.

No questions asked about the issues at the time.

        I would recommend their service.

        • +4

You can actually get an advanced replacement, where they send out the new/refurbished phone first, but the RRP of the device is held on a debit/credit card until they receive your old phone.
You have to be pretty adamant when requesting it, but they eventually do give in.

      • +2

I've had very positive experiences with Google Warranty, ship it to you express and you can return it in the box and they provide an envelope.

My Pixel 3 was 1 month out of warranty and just died (No Power, no recovery mode) and the agent still replaced it. YMMV but I've also had at least one replacement per Nexus/Pixel device

JB currently giving out free pixel buds with any Google Pixel 6a purchase (coupon was emailed yesterday) potentially could price match JB and get free pixel buds as well

    • +2

I pre-ordered from JB and got nothing.

      • It was a coupon code and barcode that was emailed yesterday (if you signed up to their newsletter)

        • I didn’t get any coupon either. I do get the JB Perks and their wkly catalogue emails

      • Ditto

        • +12

$150 gift card at Harvey Norman is not equal to a $150 cash saving for majority of people.

    • Could anybody please send the coupon to me?
      Thanks

    • Can anybody confirm if the code is generic?

      • +1

        From the screenshot above:
"This coupon is unique and can only be used once."

        • JB always say that, even though almost all of their coupons codes are generic.

          • +1

@toasty: this one is unique though. I can't add mine (used) to another cart

    • If anyone can please message me their code if they aren’t using it I’d be appreciative.

    • Looking for a code too if anyone has one unused? Thanks!

    • thanks a lot for the idea, worked for me (JB match through online chat)

      • +1

How did you get it matched? I tried their online chat and phone, but they refused to match the bundle.

        • I did it yesterday morning, maybe they did something afterwards to prevent others to do the same. picked up the bundle yesterday afternoon fine

    • would love a code too!

    • anyone have any spare code too? looking for a new phone for mum and I think this will help me out a lot! Thank you

  • This or Samsung A73 for the same money?

    • +15

Depends on whats important to you.

A73 IMO is a more well rounded & feature rich phone.
Pixel has always been about photo (ai enhanced) quality, frequent and official (clean) OS update, anti-applesung) kind of phone.

Heaps of reviews on the tube.

      • Thanks, how I saw it too.

      • +2

This for photo quality, A73 for battery life.

Choose which is most important to you, both will get a similar amount of software/security support.

        • Thanks guys, picked up the A73 on last weeks deal, think the 6a is more suited to my usage, looks like when the A73 arrives I’ll have to list it on eBay or try to return it.

        • You get the 6a if you want something medium sized, you get the A73 if you want a giant phone.

    • +3

No Samsung bloatware is me preference.

  • Does Google Australia have a Pixel trade in program?

  • Avoid tensor.

    • +1

      Ok, but why?

      • -1

        Poorly optimised.

        • +9

But isn't that standard expectations for pixel?

        • Give it time I reckon. This is their first year of creating their own chipset. It may or may not get better or worse in next few yrs

          • +29

@BargainsGrabber: you may or may not be right with this prediction

            • @shmahoo: On the contrary, I'd say he's definitely going to be right with his prediction…

          • @BargainsGrabber: Yeah, from memory when Apple moved their iPhones to their own chipset in the iPhone 4, it wasn't fully optimised initially. It does take a year or 2 to optimise it. Hopefully Tensor 2 in the Pixel 7 lineup will get closer to bridging the performance gap between it and the SnapDragon 8 chipset.

          • +11

@BargainsGrabber: They didn't really "create" their own chipset here, it's just a rebadged Exynos with a few minor changes.

            • @MrFunSocks: Exynos is no good vs SD… Even that I do agree Apple has an advantage on optimisation

            • @MrFunSocks: That honestly seems to be Google's whole new approach. Lightly rework and rebranded Samsung hardware. Anyone thats held a Pixel 6a/6/Pro next to an S21 or 21fe will see near identical screens and puncholes. Tensor doesnt seem to be anything legitimately new if its still built on Samsung nodes and processes. The upcoming Pixel Notepad or whatever also seems to be using a lot of Fold 3 tech in a more manageable form factor.

Terrible review and most of the claimed 'issues' were proven incorrect once people received them.

    • +2
    • +12

Sorry, but I ain't gonna trust a dude whose literal job is to generate clicks on his youtube channel. I feel like he may have an agenda.

        • +7

But Mr mobile is neither of those two.

      • -2

So you don't trust reviewers on YouTube because they generate clicks? Interesting take.

        • +4

Just like any other info source, you need to confirm the info and not just blindly believe him. Making decisions based purely on the opinions of a single youtube squillionaire doesn't make sense.

          • +2

@wombat81: I like to watch them all and compare notes. Then decide from there.

          • +2

@wombat81: He has no agenda against Google. His was a Pixel nut until they turned to crap this year.

            • @[Deactivated]: I'm not suggesting the he has anything against Google or not. The question is, does he create videos like this to give a genuine, unbiased opinion? Or is he trying to appeal to the viewers to maximise his views? Or is it somewhere in between?

Even if he has no interest in generating revenue, basing a decision on one guys opinion isn't the way to go.

              • -1

@wombat81: I'd trust a fanatic's analysis of the demise of their favorite phone over some random's hot take. But you do you.

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: Trust what you like, but if you don't think these guys create controversy to generate views then I don't know what to tell you.

                  • -2

@wombat81: Controversy? Not sure what was controversial in that review for you. Ease up on the paranoia, they're not trying to hoodwink you.
