  • Is the mighty last gen?

    • I am not sure, this is my first order

    • +1

Seems to be last Gen, not Gen4.
Comment in last refurb Deal for $199 suggests its Gen3 - more sluggish than latest Gen4 - "It’s a major hardware refresh which impacts almost every aspect of the box."
Likely why these are being sold cheaply.

Deal Description above "Fetch Mighty (Refurbished) - Special Offer could be only for old gen users"
Linked discussion says it's an offer sent in email for Gen2 owners, but others bought through the link.

      Bought Mighty anyway.
Delivery free: Express 1-3 Working Days (Australia Post Express).

But will have to arrange WiFi to operate it. Guess phone hotspot will work when at home. Recording still operates for days after internet is lost.
Only want for recording FTA as Samsung TV has most other features I want (but stopped recording).

Currently using a Panasonic 1TB PVR, which is slowly dying. Bought from Dick Smith store in 2014 for $10! Now occasionally loses tuning & HDD doesn't sound healthy.

      • +1

I got that Panasonic PVR for $10 from the original Dick Smith too. Mine still works great. Bargain! I have it teamed up with the old Vodafone TV box though for internet TV.

        • A great Deal in the dying days of Dick!
          ilikeit 2!
But a little limited even at that time with no series record or able to reorder recordings. But great price!

Problem with Panasonic… maybe 6 times in last year - tuners don't pick up any TV ("No Signal"). So recording doesn't work. Usually in early hours of morning, missing a late night SBS movie (that will be repeated). Have to unplug power & plug back in after minute, then it works. Worryingly, other times it sometimes can't find HDD after start up. So time to replace.

Had considered Vodafone TV, but bought a Samsung TV with most of the Internet & other features I wanted.

After 3 years, the Samsung TV stopped recording to external HDD (single tuner, but had handy series record). But can play past recordings. A known problem in Forums, requiring replacement of board - expensive.

Found my ancient DS branded twin tuner SD PVR bought from DS way back in 2008. Still works fine. Use when want to record more than 2 shows at a time on the Panasonic, but limited to SD broadcasts.
Long ago it had a minor fault - received a full refund but DS didn't want it back - so free.

$10 for 2 x twin tuner PVR was a great price.

The 4 tuners on the Mighty can record 6 programs at a time from 3 FTA networks while can watch a 4th.

  • Can I use this to record using a PC monitor and hook up the antenna to it for free to air TV?

    • +1

yes you can given your monitor has a hdmi input

  • Are there any advantages to an Android TV?

      • Can you add your own install apk?

        • I don't know much about the hardware, I only got this for "Knowledge Pack" for $6

          • @bazingaa: Do the documentaries on FetchTV have frequent ad breaks? I used to have Foxtel a long time ago and they had so many ads. I find it pointless to watch Pay TV if they still have those annoying ads every 5 minutes.

        • I don't think so, this doesn't run Android it is some form of Linux under hood from what I understand. Essentially its a PVR that has Apps built in for other streaming services, not sure if you can side load your own. That said I don't own one myself, happy for owners to chime in and give clarity.

        • No

    • There are apks for what you want re tv channels

  • +1

Thanks Op ordered, got free delivery too

    • mini or mighty ?

  • Is there anywhere a link where i can see what is available in 4K with the mighty box?

    • Anything that streamers offer in 4K, basically. Even their own Movie Box offering has some newer titles in 4K.

Justwatch lets you check individual titles.

  • +2

Thankyou Bazingaa! I was looking at getting one of these some months back and could not go past this deal! I got 2 of the Mighty boxes (Lounge Room and Bedroom). Seems like a fantastic deal, even if only using it for broadcast TV as a recording box. But the channel pack addons also seem very reasonably priced as well, so I'm very much looking forward to these.

    Cheers, you're a champion! 😃👍🏆

    • +1

glad it helped mate, I was looking it for few years too and even missed last month's $49 deal

      • It really did, I know this will help me out a lot :) That's great you could get yourself a deal after wanting it for so long, hope you get great use of it and thanks so much for sharing the deal !

Woah, they were selling for $49 last month? That's amazing!

        • +1

There was a deal for Refurbished Mini for $49 + Free Two Months of Disney Plus, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/717690
          It was sold out quickly,

          • +1

@bazingaa: Oh I see that was only for the Mini, but still that is a fantastic price for a Mini.

I only wanted a Mighty, so I'm very pleased with this deal, must be the cheapest ever (for mighty) I'm guessing? Plus the fact that it had a 2 year warranty really made the choice easy for me.

  • +1

Do you need a subscription for this to work? If so, how much?

I have one through my Optus plan, but wouldn't mind buying a second one. I assume they would play each other's recordings, right?

    • +1

      in the description it says;

"These boxes cannot be combined on accounts with boxes from supplied by broadband or phone providers."

      • +1

Ah, if I actually read it, no you don't need a subscription to use the box, and no, it won't work with the Optus branded one. Thanks!

        • +1

Might need to pay $1 by CC to set it up. No subscription necessary after that.

      • I have checked with Internode (TPG Group brands including iiNet etc). Their FetchTV add on packs only work on their own FetchTV stb's. Pretty much the same deal with Optus.
The FetchTV prices for the same packs they (FetchTV) have available are pretty much inline with the offerings of TPG Group, Optus et al.

  • +1

can you install Kayo on the fetch box ?

  • Ah, the ol’ sticky remote.

    • Talcum powder FTW!

  • +1

Just checked H626T and it’s the same model I got for free from iiNet like 4 years ago.
Honestly it’s slow as a snail and runs like a dog.

The fetch mighty is fine but the H626T mini is infuriatingly laggy.

    • Mighty seems older Gen3
Offer was sent to people with Gen2 to upgrade.

      • +2

I’ve got the M616T which appears to be 3rd gen but honestly it’s fine.. but slow to startup but the actual navigation is fine.
The fetch mini is irritating even to navigate and change channel

        • Thanks Zilog80. Bought a Mighty earlier.

Good to read it will be OK. Represents good value @$99 delivered!

Many older PVR were slow to start up (often around 6s - I posted a summary in reviews of PVRs). So am used to that. Have used / reviewed many PVR since 2007!

          New Mighty (Gen 4) M681T replaces your / this (Gen 3) M616T.

GadgetGuy Review states performance improvements & future proofing for upcoming streaming services etc in latest model.
Fetch TV Mighty (Gen 4) gets a major performance upgrade. It doubles the performance of the processor, bumps up the RAM from 3 to 4 GB and doubles the flash storage to 8 GB.

Likely why Gen3 is being cleared.
Wouldn't be surprised if these are unused units!!

          • @INFIDEL: Good to know.
As we have Apple TV, we don’t need the other services.. we just watch the documentary and news content as well as the kids pack for the kids.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I don't even have home WiFi to allow streaming. Just hotspot on phone as required to use apps & stream on Samsung TV. Mainly watch recorded FTA movies & docos.

So my upgrade from ancient Panasonic 1TB PVR could be more of a challenge than for most😉

  • +1

Thanks OP,too good a deal on the Mighty to pass up.

  • +2

Thanks OP - Mighty and 2 year warranty for $99 bargain.

  • +1

Anybody know if the Mini uses an Infrared Remote or RF?
I need to be able to control it from a remote location via the internet using a third party infrared transmitting device (called BroadLink). I currently do this with an Android based smart tv device for my elderly mother who gets confused with operating the set top box and TV.
    Cheers

    • +1

The new mini has the voice-activated Bluetooth remote, the old mini (Gen3) uses Infrared.

  • Thanks OP, been looking for retail mighty for a little while and fb and gtree prices have been insane, have bought the refurb mini before and was a new unit , so hopefully this is the same

  • Can I use one of these near the antenna port to tune into to FTA TV and stream live TV over LAN/WiFi to another TV without ongoing subscription cost? Would I need a second one of these or can I use another app or device like PC connected to a monitor? Kind of like a HDHomeRun but cheaper.

  • +6

If you don't need any FTA recording, then Fetch is very poor experience. You can get a much better (fluid) experience with a Google TV or Amazon firestick 4k max.

I have the OG fetch mighty and it is clunky as hell. It was good when all the catchup TV apps were not up to scratch. But now this is just gathering dust on my tv drawer since I changed to streaming sticks.

    • +1

Except Fetch license some channels you'd otherwise only get on MurdochTel

    • Gotcha, thank you. I want to watch live FTA channels on a projector that's located too far away from a TV antenna socket. I just bought the Mighty but can I use any Kodi/Plex LAN/WiFi client with HDMI output to the projector or is it necessary to buy an additional FetchTV box for that?

https://www.fetchtv.com.au/features-and-packages/mobile says "use the app as an extra screen at home" so does that mean the mobile app can at least watch live FTA? Not just recorded or subscription streaming content.

    • +1

      Kinda agree with this.
If you do not subscribe to any of the Fetch packages I tend to only use the Fetch for FTA, and the Firestick for everything else now.

  • Thanks I got one

  • Anyone able to compare the Mini (or Mini4K) with the Chromecast with Google TV?

Fetch Mighty Gen3 (refurb) for $189 on feeBay
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/312516775109?

Not as good as this deal, but if you're happy with the Gen3 for half the price of the Gen4 and missed out on the above deal.

  • +2

MIGHTY arrived - brand new Gen3!
    Device info: "Build date: 27/6/22"
In original packaging with tamper-evident seal in place. No marks. Shiny (black) new!

    • What was your remote like? Mine was sticky AF

      • +1

Its certainly not a nice mechanical 'click' when pressing some buttons. Some are barely raised above the surface.

Harder than other remotes to use (find buttons) in dim light.
(Might mark a few with WhiteOut or tape, as I've done with other remotes.)

Luckily I can use Samsung TV Remote to control Fetch. (But Fetch won't control TV!)
Might also program a universal remote.
There is a voice activated Remote in the app.

Some screens operate differently to expected.
Adding extra minute to start of scheduled recording time…
With right arrow in series record (adding extra minute recording at start)
But left arrow when recording single program (setting actual recording time earlier).
Could easily have been set up to operate consistently!

Screen Keyboards are different in different parts of system.

Just a bit annoying there is not a consistency of design!

But will get used to it… @$99!

Having a few problems with set up - new to Fetch:

Went through 3 downloads & upgrades - a long wait.

Parental PIN needs to be set up in online account before a lot of settings can be done. Tricked me for a while.

During set up, decided to set remote to control TV. (Tried again later & had same problem.) Remote stopped working - froze with lights on. Removed batteries - still didn't work with them replaced. Without a working remote - it's useless.
Removed batteries & restarted FETCH (power off, wait, on). Then replacing batteries, remote operated.

    After entering PIN…
Only tuned in a fraction of available FTA channels. Only ABC & 9! Bought to mainly to record SBS. No problem with reception with Samsung TV or old Panasonic PVR.

Having used & reviewed PVRs since 2007 - I've seen this problem before. Just not this bad. Living in a fringe reception area, found some tuners are stronger than others in 'pulling in' signals. Some fail to pick up some channels. Never seen as poor outcome. Should be fine with stronger reception.
So that's a bugger, but may be fixable (new antenna, better cables & connections). On the mean time, the Panasonic PVR can record SBS.

    • +2

After tuning channels many times last night - finding only ABC & 9, retuned this morning. Now found all 60 instead of 26 channels. Channels all show similar signal strength & signal quality. Much happier😊

    • +2

Use Manage menu - Settings - Channels to Scan or Manage order / remove huge number of subscription services & FTA channels.

      So many possible Settings…
Change video resolution from 720P in Manage menu - Settings - Audio & Visual - Video.

Handy guides to features like TV Guide can be found in Apps menu - All - How To's

    • +1

Found my 4 year old Samsung TV can't be controlled by this Remote (Universal Remote settings). But the TV Remote can control the Fetch! Just means using TV Remote for TV volume & power.

Possible to set up Universal Remote manually (didn't work for me) by entering individual codes (25 codes for Samsung), for plenty of TV - found on https://www.fetchtv.com.au/support/remote

Reception improved by taking antenna cable straight to Fetch. Was via Panasonic PVR antenna out. (Worked for previous PVRs, just not the Fetch.)

  • +3

Welcome Bonus Pack free for first month.
Free access to Movie Box & all 45+ Channel Ultimate Packs.

Plus 1 free movie rental in first 62days

Information for both in TV Menu - at top of screen
    Enjoy!

    • +2

thanks for the all updates mate, it was really helpful to setup mine, free all channels is certainly a bonus :D

  • +1

Mobile app is working well and you can watch paid channels on it as well.
Just download "Fetch Mobi" app from the playstore and signin with the Fetch activation ID.
I had some issues with "Secure DNS" on phone and had to disable it.

Also DLNA server (STB ipaddress) works well and you can just use "VLC Player" on android and select the Fetch TV STB to watch recorded TV.

    • App's Remote has voice control, since our remote lacks it. Buttons or voice controls Box. Handy if you cant find the Remote!

Unfortunately haven't been able to play recorded FTA programs. Says needs to be on same network as Fetch. Changing to WiFi, it won't open. Possibly too much for other phone used as hotspot to handle.
Will look into later, still exploring😉

  • Answering my own question. Yesterday I received the Mighty I ordered. The package looked brand new with an unbroken seal sticker. After set up, it looks like the Mobi app can control it, and watch recordings but not live FTA channels. I will check if any other kind of client can connect and stream live FTA channels that the Mighty is tuned into via the antenna. It's doubtful so I will probably have to get another FetchTV box for that?

    • +1

I think we are supposed to use FTA channels` own streaming app to watch them over the internet. I can stream premium channels on Mobile Data as well but recordings can only be watched in the same network as fetch mighty. Also DLNA only shows FTA recordings only while I can watch even premium channel recordings on Fetch app.

      • Gotcha however I'm currently stuck without unlimited Internet on home mobile "broadband" due to my location hence I want to tune into the FTA channels rather instead of consuming Internet data, thanks.

    • Channel apps to stream. TV antenna to use the built in tuner

    Works great.
    Hello streaming!

  • +1

    Glad I bought👍
    Especially with the unexpected freebies😊

But there are a few simple things that are more handy (& am used to for 8 years) on my dedicated PVR (Panasonic 1TB) - with FTA recordings:

*Time Skip (forward 1m, & 10s back) - easy to skip ads with a few presses.
Fetch only has 5 min forward & back skip. But FF & REW work well.

*1.4 x FF with sound - can watch programs quicker.

Can still use that PVR for recording programs that can make use those features. Good reception on both.
PVR usually include an Antenna Out to do that, to connect TV etc to TV signal.

Added a good antenna splitter with F connectors to split TV signal between the Fetch & Panasonic.

In using & reviewing PVRs over years, found they all operate a little differently. We get used to them after a while.

    Recordings have started late!
Unlike with FTA EPG on both my PVRs.
Requires using settings to start recording time earlier. And then set recording priorities in case programs overlap…

  • is this only for new customers?

    • Anyone.
Offer of $99 Mighty was sent to existing customers to upgrade from their Gen2 Fetch.

Received email - FREE Voice Remote beimg delivered!!

"We're writing to let you know that, due to a mix up in the distribution centre, your Mighty was delivered with a standard remote instead of the newer version with Voice Control. We are very sorry this happened, and have arranged for a shiny new voice remote to be sent to you at the same address as your Mighty. It should arrive sometime within the next few days. "

    • how to identify which is which ? :D I have a one with orange lights for numbers
just checked email and looks like I am also getting a new one

      • +1

That model is so old & doesn't even listen to us!
So we get the shiny new voice remote & keep the old as backup remote.
        Another nice bonus🎉

        • Yeah! I also found a way to watch on a second display using Samsung phone. Connect phone with USB-C to HDMI hub and use Samsung Dex to open Fetch Mobi app. So we can watch premium channels/recordings in full screen.

          • +1

@bazingaa: You people with your fancy USB-C to HDMI phones…

            Only breakthrough for me…
Samsung TV (which Fetch couldn't set up volume controls for on Fetch Remote), but TV Remote can control Fetch…
Now the Fetch Remote controls TV volume! Don't know how. Just pressed volume button & found it works.

            Really enjoying the Mighty💰
After using & reviewing over 20 PVR since 2007, it takes time to get used to a new one.

    • Better than a sticky old non-voice remote

    • +1

i think the new remote is on the way, my auspost account shows a new express post itrm coming from fetch

      • A new remote… (no notification yet)

Still learning how to use the menus, such as for Series Recording. More options than other PVRs & TVs I've used.

Was recording multiples of same FTA episode & deleting. Just had to set to Record Newest under Seasons. Easy.
Others are set to Record All Seasons to catch up on past shows.

        • I found when testing that It gets tricky if one tries to series record shows like" Tour De France". There is the main show and also morning highlights which is repeated in the evenings and also extended highlights. Poor ole Fetch tended to record most of them and no method of series recording just the morning highlights. A solution would be if they included a sub filter to only record shows that exist between certain hours. Not a big deal as one can just delete the extras.

          • @Borg: At least, deletion of unwanted shows is better than missing them.
I look up the Fetch TV Guide & set single recordings in those cases. Not optimal.

Programs that include the episode name in title (like travel docos for different countries), won't series record.

With a normal PVR, I'd set up it's regular time to record each episode. No option on Fetch.

An added sub-filter would also catch those. Topfield PVRs were good for adding user created add ons.

            Really enjoying the Fetch.

            • @INFIDEL: Its funny, I am the opposite and like the flexibility to manually set preferred times, so stick to my PVR which can also be set to Daily, Weekly, Monthly etc. I was surprised that Fetch did not have those options hence don't use it other than for testing. It is what one is used to I suppose and for me I don't watch much commercial TV. Each has its Pros and Cons.

              • @Borg: Daily, Weekly, Monthly recording settings are found on most PVRs.
(My 2008 PVR did Daily & Weekly, but could only be programmed for 10 SD recordings & had a 160GB HDD. Still works.)

Fetch takes a different approach of ONLY recording based on program title, rather than time. Handy when program time changes.
Both have their advantages (& limitations).

Given my username - I watch a lot of travel shows (on SBS).

Found a few interesting spots to visit with great food to eat!
But reality often can't compare with edited aerial views, perfect weather and cloudless skies.

Chatting with a Welsh couple I met yesterday, I could recall features of their coal mining Valley from programs. (Travelled in more tourist areas there.) Even remembered the works of an artist who painted that different life. It adds to my appreciation of places I visit. Locals open up more, I learn more.

Search function is handy to suggest other programs (on different channels, catchup, streaming services, & my recordings). Watching programs I didn't know about.

TV Guide lacks some details found on FTA EPG (country of origin of films - I find handy). But adds handy series & episode info.

We get used to our patterns of using devices & watching programs.

I recommended only watching recorded programs - to my corporate clients in the early 90's. To take back control of their time & ease anxiety. They found it useful.
