Optus system will see this as sim only plan. That is why people are able to cancel plan for only $588

        • +1

They asked me to return the phone. Does not work.

          • @spy: Who is they? Optus when you said you couldnt get reception?

            • +1

@CodeXD: Yes waive all charges and contract but return phone

              • @spy: Were you on a sim-only plan?

                • @pigmyfart: Yes. They knew the phone is on the sim contract.

    • +1

Oh - another gotcha that the guy called out as haven't noticed it mentioned in the comments, if you port-in and then specifically just cancel the contract, you will in fact be retiring your number and need to get yourself a new one… Obviously the ways around this is are to port your number out to another service or just get a brand new number in the first place instead, but just saying in case anyone had that in mind.

Edit: this is probably stating the obvious…

      • cancel the contract, you will in fact be retiring your number

Do telcos normally let you keep your cancelled number for awhile or something? I do remember that if you let your prepaid recharge lapse you still get to keep the number for a year or two, no idea about postpaid.

        • simply tell optus you want to keep your number and change it to prepaid during cancellation chat. ive done it in the past you use same sim card and its valid for 6 months for incoming calls.

      • What do you do to keep the number?

        • Can't you just port out?

          • @Torzz: Port out while still on contract and then cancel it with Optus and pay the early termination fee?

            • +2

@lionh3art: Pretty sure if you just port out Optus will just send you an invoice for the early termination fee. Do not think you have to formally contact Optus at all.

              • @Torzz: Thanks. Will give this a try when JB have some good deals with gift cards.

    • Please report back on whether this works, still miffed about getting my data stolen by Optus/big government.

  • Signed up yesterday, quick and easy.

Does anyone know- if you port out to another provider (I'm planning to go to Boost prepaid), do you still need to contact Optus to cancel beforehand?

    • No, if you port out, the cancelling is done by the provider you choose (in your case boost)

  • +9

I signed up yesterday and cancel through chat on the same day without any dramas. Got my bill today which shows $1.63 charge for 1 day plan usage + $588 termination fee.

  • Could somebody please help.

Existing customer but happy to sign up for an additional service (new number). Is this cool and do Harvey Norman hook you up straight away? Furthermore, does the S22 have a normal SIM or completely esim.

    Cheers

    • That's what I did.

First, they run a credit check - tells them how many services you're eligible for (they were happy with an additional 4 accounts on top of the two I already had); I ported my number over to Optus + got a whole new one as well. Walked out the door with two phones without handing over a penny.

    • +1

Yes. Being an existing customer makes signing up very easy and they activate in store. Get a new number, go home, cancel just the new service, insert Sim card of choice. We're awaiting the cancellation bill.

  • Deal seems too great. What’s the catch?

    • +5

You have to spend time in harvey norman, and talk to optus setting it up (and cancelling it if you're doing early terminating). Thats about it.

  • So has anyone tried the coverage commitment guarantee hack to have their etf waived

    • Failed. Asked to return the phone

      • Oh well…cant win them all

      • Optus or Harvey norman?

        • Floptus

  • Is this being advertised in store only?

  • Is it worth upgrading from s21?

    • If you are happy with a smaller phone.

  • +3

    Another happy cancelling customer here.

  • Can we get new number?

    • +2

      Yep

  • Cancelled mine same day, got into some back and forth with the chat because they wanted to charge $828 plus $69 for the 2 hours that I'd "used" - after TIO threat they changed their mind and would only charge the cancellation fee.

    • Why 828 and 69? i thought 588 and 49.

      • +2

They probably got the flip 4 which is $69 per month with early termination fee of $828

        • +1

          Yes got the Flip 4

  • +1

    FYI.

Those wanting the Flip for $828, deal finishes tomorrow while the S22 finishes on the 20th.

  • +1

Good guys commercial have the S22 OTTERBOX Symmetry case for 31 bucks down from 70 elsewhere but good luck getting it if your store has stock but not on the commercial website

  • Is it worth getting this deal to potentially have it as a trade in for the galaxy s23 when it comes out? I'm trying to work out whether it's worth spending the $588 or not.. Or if not to trade up next year, whether it's worth paying the extra $100 for the 256gb?
I'm still stuck with the galaxy s7. I like having a physical button, expandable storage and a headphone jack - which is now not available on newer phones. I also don't like spending too much on a phone.. Inflation is real since my $400 brand new galaxy s7!

    • +1

At the moment with the bonus you get $820 trade in with samsung and 900 through jb hifi. It likely will be similar once s23 comes out.
S22 is a huge improvement over the S7 if you can live with no jack and no SD card slot. The physical button is a non issue

      • +1

To add to this you might be completely happy with the S22 and not even need the s23 ultra

      • Really? All new phones have no headphone jack?

Want to upgrade phone so checking deals but really need a headphone jack, when I've used the bluetooth ones they take too much battery.

      • Are those values for the 128gb version or 256gb version?
I just really wanted to future proof myself for as long as possible.. So if no sd card slot was included, I wanted as much memory as possible.. Like what the ultra comes with.. But on the other hand, the ultra might also be too big for me.

        • Go for 256 ( though $100 cloud storage would last around 5 years) by paying $99 extra if you really want data on be handy and don’ want to install/ delete apps.

  • Thank you! I picked up the last handset at Harvey Norman Melbourne CBD yesterday. They said they can get more in a few days… Must be interstore transfer. I waiting for the pixel 7, but it was too underwhelming for me. Also, this was free!! So far so good.

  • +3

Potential further savings tip: Bought yesterday and cancelled today over chat. I cancelled without ever inserting and activating the SIM (I got a new number) and I was told that the early termination fee would be $563.50. Maybe because I never activated the SIM.

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/394785/98660/54c2993b-…

    • Cancelled.online chat whisky sitting in car, in HN carpark out front
      Def, $588

Hopefully the $563.5 is correct. Save the chat. Youve been confirmed by CSR that you only pay that much if they charge the higher amount

    • You’ll also received the first month charge in the bill

  • Probably going to go for this, paying $58 for 40gb of Telstra data a month. No need to upgrade my 4XL. Can sell the phone and end up on Optus network for cheaper with more data. Win win.

  • Just a silly question, but can I have 2 mobile phone numbers (with 2 phones) with the same personal details? The reason being I have my old phone and old SIM but the old SIM has been damaged recently and I am waiting for a replacement at the moment. I would hate to lose the mobile number associated with my old SIM by signing up for this deal. Thanks :)

    • +1

Yes you can. Just go in and say you want a new number.

  • I have a good deal with Optus on a legacy plan where I get roaming data+unlimited calls/texts in a lot of countries, I don't want to mess with that.

Is it easy to add a new number to my account, and cancel it, without affecting the terms of my old contract at all?

  • +1

managed to grab the 256gb for an extra $50

    • Wow, how did you manage $50 instead of $100?

      • +4

the colour I wanted was sold out, so the manager gave me a discount on another colour they had in stock. (wanted black, got white 😂)

  • What records do HN and Floptus want to see to get this?

    • Licence, medicare, and they'll do a credit check.

      • All of that information is already shared on the internet.
Just tell them to google it.

  • -7

Early termination is $1176 now. Show is over.

"minimum spend over the term of agreement: $1176.00 not including a $0 Delivery Fee and excludes any credits or promotions.
More information on the plan you have selected can be found on the Critical Information Summary document here: $49 Harvey Norman Plan"

    • +2

Minimum spend and early termination cost are not the same.

    • The CIS (as posted a couple of times earlier) is:-
      https://smb.optus.com.au/opfiles/Shop/All/cis/Cis%20Document…
Which shows that for the $49 plan the Maximum plan cancellation fee is $588
The HN salesperson who I dealt with also showed me this same CIS when I bought a S22 on Friday.
I cancelled the plan via phone earlier today and the Optus person said that I my early termination fee is $563.50 (that is, $49/2*23, see below). Looks like I'm also up for $49 for the first month.
Under the other 'Other Information' section of the CIS it also says:- "Your cancellation fee will be half of your minimum monthly charge (excluding any applicable device charges) x months remaining in your minimum term."

  • For those who have cancelled: how soon did you get the bill for the cancellation fee?

    • No bill yet, cancelled Saturday. This is one of the very few bills I want to get.

      • The optus operator on the chat said there was no device associated with the number.. I really, really want to see that bill.

    • I cancelled on Friday morning over the phone and still haven't received a bill yet. Not showing up in my account either. Former Optus customer here.

I sounded confused and disappointed on the phone when the lady assisted me in cancelling it. What are the chances she worked some magic and I never receive a bill? 😂

      • I think we're all hoping for that…

        Alas…YMMV

        • I just got off chat. Don't know about you but looks like I got a free phone

          Edit: proof

They also confirmed my date of cancellation and account number alongside this.

          • @Jayblesz: Looks good. I cancelled minutes after leaving HN, sitting in the car out front. Nothing ever showed up in my app or online Optus account page.
I did get told something similar, like nothing to pay, BUT, I was told, the ETC is $588. My next Optus bill for the earlier this year 'A8 tab half price, no device payment', is due 28/10, with the expected payment of $18.32. (I got the bigger tab, so cost $5ish a month more) it's been well over a week now and if nothing by the 28th, I'll be thinking similar, and definitely, if nothing by the 7th, then the smile will get bigger.

          • @Jayblesz: So what did they do for you today? Did you ask where your bill was?

            • @Spending2Much: Yep exactly.
I told them I was advised I would receive a final bill after I cancelled, but hadn't received it.
I aked if they could double and triple check if I should expect any further bills.
I specifically referenced the cancelled account number and mobile phone number, which they reiterated in advising no further bills will be issued.
The final comment they made was the clarification above.

              • @Jayblesz: This is amazing, exactly like when I got my S20 FE from JB on Telstra plan.

      • Heard an Optus boss on ABC Radio. Apparently they are being accused of making it hard for people to cancel services over the data breach. She assured listeners they were bending over backwards to let worried customers leave, including the few on contracts. There is hope 🙏

        • Ms Rosmarin also defended the telco's response to the data breach, refuting claims the company had charged customers looking to leave.

"I don't know where stories like this come from. Most of our customers are not even on contracts anymore," she said.

"We want customers to choose to be with Optus, to choose to stay with Optus."

    • It's been since last Friday for me. According to chat, my account is closed and no outstanding bills owed.

      • Same
Bought Friday at HN, cancelled as soon as sitting in car out front of shop.
Was also told $588 ETC for the plan by Optus.
It was cancelled by online chat, before it even showed up in my account on app or online.

(HN sales guy tried telling me couldn't cancel for two minimum two months or have to return phone to store or other dribble)

      • Did you actually activate the sim or cancelled without activating? Do they ask for a reason?

        • As far as I understand, it was activated in store, upon signing agreement.
I got an email, from Optus, confirming the new service. Whilst paying the $400 to dodgy Gerry at the counter, (S22+256) Sim card wasn't inserted or anything, wasn't onto the network. Online chat cancelled, as soon as got into car, sitting parked out front of shop.

  • Got a second number with Telstra today (sim only plan via JB) and they did a credit check. Might try and grab one of these tomorrow, where another credit check against me will be done. Don't have bad credit so hopefully no issues getting this deal - or should I maybe wait a few more days?

  • +3

Anyone got buyers remorse on this phone? I get about 4 hours screen on time, I was under the impression despite the small battery it was optimised…. downgrade from my Huawei p20 pro.

    • +1

Reading the comments of this deal is what put me off the phone.

EDIT: I see you also commented there about how bad it is lol

      • Yep! Most overrated ozbargain thread in my opinion.

    • +3

Because the Huawei p20 pro is a great phone that aged gracefully

      • +1

It sure did… except the lack of ongoing android support was what made me part ways. The custom OS built on android 10 was incompatible with my work.

    • +1

I'm pretty happy with it so far, coming from s10e.

  • +10

    Optus + HN.

If they threw in a cashback from Kogan, we would have the trifecta horsemen of the apocalypse.

  • Checked YouTube camera reviews about this phone, ordinary performance turned me off.

  • How do they charge the Early termination fee? is it automatically deducted from your bank account?

    • +1

Probably whenever the month is due.

I have the earlier this year Optus tablet deal, and they just aligned up the invoice date, with whatever my date was from an earlier month2month Optus mobile plan I had from years ago. Didn't matter that whenever I activated the tablet, they did a short month, then just made it the same date as that once previous billing set up.
Seems weird, but I guess that's how they do it.
I presume we're all going to get charged at different times (not calendar month)

      • How much did you pay to cancel the optus tab $10 sim deal?

        • I didn't cancel that one…yet
The device credit is still there each month.

I think I saw, last time I looked, was something around $290 to cancel….but maybe only 6 months of $18 a month left.
Cheaper to let it run out

  • +1

Flip4 on $69 deal has been extended (originally ended 10/10/2022). Got one today on the 11th.
