    • I've purchased a grands worth on two previous occasions and kept some cards for months without spending and didn't get hacked, but it seems like pushing it to try that again considering how many people are reporting losing money. So, this time won't be holding on to them for any longer than a few minutes.

  • +1

How long does it take for the gift card to be activated? Is it roughly 4 hours still? I plan on using them on the same day to minimise my chances of the cards being hacked!

    • +1

During upfront discount deals (such as this one), activation is usually delayed by a minimum of 4 hours, although sometimes it would be closer to 4.5 hours. Having said that, during the last Vanilla Visa gift card (in VIC/TAS only), there was no delays to activation…

Outside of any upfront discount deals, activation is pretty much as soon as the transaction is finalised.

  • +1

Has anyone found a way to pay a mortgage with the cards?

  • i visited 3 coles in western sydney ….. all $100 and $250 visa gift card gone in coles :D

i noticed there are various different type of visa card in coles including vanilla card so how do we make sure the one we buy is the right one for the scheme ?

    • +3

The one that's hidden usually is the right one for the scheme. These are prepaid. MasterCards, not visa.

      • Thanks, My apology to mix up Visa with mastercard but i now realised the reason i did that was because there were only visa cards on shelfs and none were mastercard … ! that is why i was confused.

    • +6

The prepaid gift cards in this deal have very distinctive colourful packaging. The deep purple of the $100 denomination and the bright yellow of the $250 denomination stands out on a gift card shelf.

The packaging of the Vanilla Visa gift cards are predominately silver with different colours for the box on the front, so they should be very easy to distinguish. If you see a gift card that operates on the Visa network, that is not the gift card on sale through this deal.

Additionally, when you (or a staff member) scan a prepaid gift card, keep an eye out for the amount owed. You should be able to see on the checkout screen that a 10% discount has been applied to the regular cost price.

      • thanks

    • Its "A Gift" clearly printed on the outside front cover.

    • The giftcard rack should have an advertisement with a picture of the correct card. The card will also ring up at the discounted price when you scan it.

  • Yes, this deal is listed in S.A. in next week's Coles catalogue, online now.

    • It starts Wednesday?

I got 3-4 Coles around me, some are open at midnight I believe.

I only want 3 cards, so hopefully I can score.

  • +2

There is 30-40 coles mastercard of $100 only available at coles Burwood

    • i need 40 each $250 … ! huge debt to pay off to ATO … !

      • You must be doing well if you have a tax bill

      • why such huge ato debt?

        • well, i have one off investment capital gain so i have to pay high tax (debt) more then what was deducted from my salary so i have to pay huge amount to ATO now… getting this card would help getting some discount on that debt nothing else… !

    • Can I use it to buy other gift cards, not at Coles site.

      • I have always found that it works like a normal credit card.

  • +2

Can i load this gift card to my afterpay account and use it?

  • +2

Oh geez, saw an ad that there is going to be a news segment about this "free money" supermarket offer. I think it was for channel 9 news tonight.

    • +2

Like we needed more competition! Luckily nobody watches free to air TV anymore.

  • +4

can't find any 250s from nearby coles already

    • -1

This may be a good thing if the staff reserved them for tomorrow.

    • +2

      Same

  • +6

First neg ever. Purchased gift card in June. Last week I opened the packaging and went to pay for groceries at Coles and the card got declined. Checked balance to discover that in September the card had been used at some massage website

    • yes, i heard similar storys before.

      • dammm i should check my woolies $500 gc from last year too

  • +1

It seems you want to buy these and use them straight away

  • +1

These have been oos at my local for a couple of months now.

  • Which retailers are these gift cards accepted at? Forgive me if that's a stupid question. Thanks

    • +1

Lots! You can use them at woolworths, coles, petrol stations, gas/electric/water bills just to name a few places these cards come in handy. You can also use them to buy gift cards on shopback

      • How about jbhifi officeworks goodguys etc?

        • Yes! But you're better off paying for those gift cards with this colesastercard for more savings!

      • can also use them to buy gift cards on shopback

        good to know churr
i wonder if any/all store giftcards can be bought w it

  • Can it be used on samsung online stores? Obviously If its a mobile purchase there will be a multiple cards used? Has anyone tested and tried. I am thinking to purchase a fold 4- so $250 x 8 aprox cards for the payment of $2K.
Appreciate any insight who has used this in the past

Ps- I understand the risk of hacking recently which has increased significantly but I am planning to use it as soon as its active with in 4 hours :-)

  • to buy or not to buy?

    • +3

to find or cannot find ?

      • happy to report i did find them haha bought 5 x 250

      • There are about 100 at my store. Jerk only let me buy 5. I shall be going make many times.

  • +1

Anyone walking into a Coles tomorrow at 6-7am for this?

  • +2

They just had the deal on the 6pm news. No mention of the hackers risk though.
There will not be many cards available for the "professionals".
    Bonanza for the hackers.
Potential big loss for the "unsophisticated investors" that would probably give up and take the loss if hacked.

  • Anyone see the news for this promotion / news should have stated that the cards can be hacked

    • Wow, hopefully they have heaps of stocks

      • +1

Otherwise plenty of dissapointed buyers giving Coles bad rep later.

        • +1

Or they say due to overwhelm demands bla bla bla

    • May be Coles doing what aldi does for many years with their special buys

  • +3

I remember this time last year Coles had a deal for one of their gc and ppl were queuing up at the opening then the system went down and no one could buy any.

  • +1

Already a pack of people at my local coles gathering in front of the store

    • +6

You one of them i assume lol

    • +1

      It’s like an apple launch!

  • +1

Heaps at my local , like a whole human sized rack of 100s & 250s.

    • Sadly nearly all are OOS for $250s near me

Except for 1 which always keeps these Gift cars behind counter

  • A lot more stock than I saw the other day while passing by

  • +1

My two local coles both had removed their $250 cards as of 7pm last night. I was told they will get them out for this morning. This is because they are wanting to stop people hiding them all over the store the day before the sale.

    • Too late by then.

  • So the $100 card is 4.5 per cent discount right?

  • +2

Good to see my local Coles stores keep these cards in their service desk. Easy and secure.

    • Wish more stores do it like that.

      • From what the missus is saying stores were told to hold $250 cards at service desk.

        • +1

Asked multiple stores, Welland, Pt Adelaide nothing at service desk, nothing on the shelves either.
          All hidden before today.

Only store that I know actually does their job well in regards to this is CHURCHILL (they been doing it for a long time). Works out so much better for general public

          • @USER DC: I got the run around at my local also but dont care enough to push the issue word is that stores were allocated a lot of stock though so very surprised to see so few having any likely poor management of the promotion

  • I've yet to open the packaging but I'm wondering if anyone knows:
    1. Can I pay towards my tax return before the NOA is issued? I seem to have found a page in my portal that allows me to, but just wanted to double check if anyone has done it before
    2. What do I enter as the cardholder and CCV on the ATO portal? Seems like a necessary field

    • +1

      1 yes
2 exactly what it says on the card

      • Can you dump thousands into the tax account and claim it back as a refund?

        • +1

In theory yes but I wouldn’t do it.

    • +2

Just use your name. You can use 10 cards per day. 5 at MyGov and 5 at Easypay.
      https://www.governmenteasypay.gov.au/payato

      • Mine are starting to decline after I did 4 on MyGov

      • Thankyou for this tip Yola. I was not aware of the EasyPay site. I found my first 4 cards were accepted via MyGov, the 5th card errored, so I then used EasyPay no probs.

        • yup i had same issue 4 payments to Tax account were all goood.

But Hecs payments, 5th card not okay

    • Now that I've started the process:
      1. Yes
      2. I was wondering why there was so much concern over security as there is a CCV number on the card, so I tried entering the wrong CCV and expiry dates (separately) to see what would happen. Turns out you can enter anything as the CCV, but at least it declines an incorrect expiry.

And thanks to everyone that replied too.

      • You’re saying CCV doesn’t matter? The three digit code at the back? You can put anything in that field? O.o

        • I received an ATO receipt when I entered the wrong CCV if that mean anything. I also tested using the wrong expiry to see if it always gives a receipt even if the wrong details are entered.

          • +2

@90percent: Wowee, but if you check your gift card balance, did it actually process when you enter the wrong CCV?

            • @Bambini88: similar to the reply below, I'm getting an error on the balance checker

          • @90percent: That is disturbing, no wonder so much hacking.

      • I'm still waiting for mine to get activated. Strange that some people got their card activated already. When i went to check my balance. It keeps erroring out.

        • Does the website on the card redirect to mybalancenow for you as well?

          • @90percent: Yup. Entered in the website as printed on the card instead of googling it.

            • @yolow: Make sure to change the country from US to AUS. Suddenly works after changing (surprise, surprise)

      • the transaction would probably decline, and the payment wont be taken out of your prepaid mastercard

  • two of my $250 cards got declined and i got refunded for a total of $500 in cash. then paid another 2 $250 card by card. double the saving LOL

    • You mean you used same type of gift cards to buy the cards? Like a rinse and repeat?

    • So it’s considered stealing
