Currently $1 off RRP on Amazon AU, I did get Officeworks to pricebeat, down to $13.30, making it cheaper than my local parma..

Highly rated (overhyped?) by several audio review websites as best value dongle DAC, I myself just got it because my windows laptop headphones jack sucks and this fixed it.
Works well on various cans, even the higher impedance one like Sennheiser HD6XX.
Also works with the Rode TRRS adapter in case you need to use external microphones on your USB-C devices.

Edit: Worth noting that we get the SKU MU7E2FEA with A2049 model number in Australia, same as international model or known as US variant that has full 1 Vrms as opposed to the EU’s 0.5 Vrms.

You'll get knockoffs for $9 or so, might as well get the "brand name" imo

This is at least better than hundreds of dollars for a $20 product

    • +5

Careful with the knockoff ones, some might give you noise, poor audio quality (compressed and such), or even pops and crackles when plugged in. Not worth the risk especially when using expensive IEM in my opinion :(

    • i have a chromebook, and only comes with the 1 usb c jack. The Apple ones have lasted over 2 years, whereas the cheap ones last maybe a few months

    Sold and shipped by AmazonAU.
I presume this is effectively $9 if you take the $5 credit into account from this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/731386

    • Good point! Did not think about this yesterday, I just walked into nearest officeworks since I had to get it ASAP..

    • +1

Without the mental gymnastics, it's a 4.76% saving assuming you buy a $100 gift card.

  • +1

Does it work on Samsung phones as well?

    • +2

Yes. I use mine with the galaxy s20 Plus 5g. It works with any usb C plug as the device is a little DAC.

      • +2

Not entirely accurate. It'll work but it is undervolted on anything not made by Apple

        • I haven't seen that in any reviews. The output power for these is consistent across all the devices. I wouldn't put it past apple, to do something like this, but in all the direct comparisons have detailed power output data and there is no hint of (profanity) in this regard. If you have some data, I would love to see it.

@alumunum: You know what, I could have outdated info. This was known back when I finally moved off from an S10+ and got a Pixel 6 Pro.

At the time, Android just sucked with DACs which was super annoying for me as none of mine worked well. Android 12.1 has massively improved that, and I no longer have any issues (i.e. - DACs now work natively instead of requiring USB Audio Player Pro)

HOWEVER, have just tried the USB-C to 3.5mm DAC, and as brilliant as it is, it is woefully underpowered on my Pixel 6. It doesn’t get loud at all. On my iPad, loudness is good. Similarly, the Lightning to 3.5mm DAC is fine on my iPhone 13 Mini.

They’re definitely undervolting, or it’s an issue with Android. Produces 1vrms on iPhone, and drops to something 0.5vrms. This isn’t scientific, and is based on a few audiophile forums I’ve read.

Other than that tho, it’s a great little DAC

$1 off RRP. Also been this price for a month on Amazon.

For Android users there is a $16 pixel version or $20 Samsung.

  • Is it better than google pixel version?

    • +1

Apple version has reduced volume on android. If not on android, Apple one is best.

Funny iphone still has lightning cable

  • Aren’t most headsets we buy now wireless?

    • +2

In my case this also allows me to use my external Rode mics on iPad, my mics are all wired unfortunately..

  • I went through 2 of these in a year, I primarily use it whilst running. They are not robust, better to get one of the braided ones from Amazon.

  • +2

    Lol….

  • +1

Will this allow the microphone of Apple earphones work on a Samsung phone? The mic does not work for me when using my phone's 3.5mm headphone jack..

    • If you have 3.5mm headphones with a microphone line (3 lines on the socket) they should work on anything, unless they are damaged or your phone's socket is damaged.

  • Parma? Parmi*

  • funny enough, i just had one delivered yesterday, generic brand paid $6.49

wanted to get one from AliExpress, for $3.50 but couldn't be bothered waiting till Christmas.

    amazon

not sure how well it works.. will test it later

  • -2

Hold up.. what's the point of this when the apple jacks are lightning?

    • +1

not all. my ipad mini is usb-c.

      • How do you find the Mini? I'm seriously considering it as a laptop replacement and as an Android user USB-C is a big deal.

    • Next year iphone will have usb-c

    • Some iPad variants have used USB-C for years now…

  • The new generation iPads don't have a headphone jack, so this will be pretty useful if you are thinking of getting one for your wired headset.

  • -5

lol people are still using wired headphones on mobile devices….. its understandable on computers and audio studio equiptment / mixers but not mobiles and ipads, compressed music sounds crap on any headphone. wired or wireless on mobile devices.

    • +2

How'd you go on this test?

      https://abx.digitalfeed.net/

    • +1

Because to get the sound quality $150 wired headphones you need $300+ Bluetooth headphones…

  • Worth noting that the description of this item seems to list it as being compatible with iPhone models and says:
    - Compatible with most of the iphone models
    - Works with all devices that have a Lightning connector and support iOS 10 or later, including iPod touch, iPad and iPhone
    - Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter
So it's possible that it may not be the product the title advertises. I've bought it anyway but may be a return and refund depending on what shows up.

    • +1

Not too much to worry about, IMO. Worth noting the:

      • Listing Title is correct
      • Picture is correct
      • first line of the description "The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug — like headphones or speakers — to your USB-C devices."
      • Yeah I'm not too worried, and at that price with the option to return there's no real risk. But thought it was interesting enough to point out.

  • +1
    • Step 1: Remove headphone jack from products on the guise of 'slim form factor' while charging more for devices year-on-year
    • Step 2: Create headphone jack adapter
    • Step 3: Profit!
    • +1

Step 2 is actually the creation of TWS earbuds

  • Best Deal for Android?

    • Samsung one from edu store

  • I use this on the work laptop and really happy with the result (DT770 250ohm), saved be spending $100+ on a proper DAC.

  • $14?
    and not $140?
    That's refreshing.

  • Does this only work with Apple? I thought being USB-C would mean it would work with any USB-C phone?

    • +1

No, it works with most USB C devices including Windows laptops, Android phones, even Nintendo Switch..

  • If you can swing it at the local OW, they may be able to price beat Videoguys' $11 price.
There is a shipping charge involved, but the guy at checkout got bored of me inputting my home address to show him what it was and just scanned it in at $10.45. YMMV.
