Kogan Mobile Small 365-Day Plan with 80GB Data $109 (Recharge, eSIM or SIM Pack) @ Kogan

390

Kogan Mobile's everyday price has dropped from $120 to $109, and the data has increased from 60GB to 80GB. Price is equivalent to $9.08/month, with 6.67GB a month (but the data isn't rationed per month, you can use all 80GB in the first day if you want to).

The carrier network is Vodafone (which was bought by TPG, so should it be called the TPG network?). Esim is also available. Kogan appear to be rolling out VoWiFi and VoLTE according to comments on Whirlpool: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9j0n7k09?p=111

This plan does not have free international calls. International calls can be at per-second rates, or you can purchase an international call pack. This plan can be used when roaming overseas if you pay the very expensive $15/24 hours roaming fee.

This deal has been listed on Kogan.com.au as well as on KoganMobile.com.au. If you purchase through Kogan.com.au, discounted Kogan gift cards should work, according to previous deals. If you want to do this, check the previous deals, they said something about adding the gift card to your Kogan account BEFORE purchasing.

Warning: if you renew this plan before the 365 days are up, you forfeit the remaining days in your existing plan, and any remaining data allowance. Data DOES NOT bank with this plan. Renewal will cost $109 unless they drop the price further.

If you're willing to wait, Kogan discount this plan to $99 a couple of times each year. Sometimes they also give bonus data. Also, consider that MVNOs using the Optus network often discount their 365-day plans to $89 for your initial subscription, and sometimes have cheaper recharges (e.g. Coles Mobile). So this plan is really for people who want to use the Vodafone network, perhaps because Optus has poor coverage at your home or at your workplace.

The unique Kogan Mobile voucher included as part of this product cannot be redeemed for cash. Voucher must be purchased by 11:59pm AEDT by 31/10/2022. Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEDT on 30/11/2022

  • Bought it for $99 in Aug

    • That's listed in the deal:

Kogan discount this plan to $99 a couple of times each year

I assume your annual renewals will be cheaper now. Can you see the renewal price on your phone, and has it changed to the lower price?

    • You can buy $2 SIm and recharge Small plan for $90 with 120GB
      See this current post

That's a grandfathered plan, it remains to be seen if Kogan will let you use that plan's recharge if you haven't had that plan before.

        • Thx for that info

    • This appears to be a ONE TIME special offer
It says in small print in RED..
      QUICK - ENDS 31/10

      • All of Kogan's mobile offers have expiry dates, but I agree this one is much closer than their other offers.

Kogan usually have a red badge saying "SALE" when they have temporary price drops. This one has an orange "our lowest price" badge, suggesting it's not temporary, and it certainly isn't their lowest sale price, also suggesting it isn't temporary.

Their badge only makes sense if it's their lowest everyday price. But then again, it's not like Kogan hasn't been fined by the ACCC for misleading claims before.

  • If you're going overseas on holidays, could you put this SIM into a spare mobile, leave that mobile with a friend or relative in Australia (to keep it charged), and redirect all incoming calls to a different MVNO's SIM that has better roaming rates? Not sure how you would send SMS messages to the other SIM though, perhaps there's an app to forward all incoming SMS messages?

    • Just bring your phone with you. You can received SMS while you are in oversea.

actually they dropped the data quite a lot too.
just few days ago small flex was $120 and the data was 150GB

Going down to 80GB meaning the data is down by 47% however the price is only down by 9%

    • Unless I'm mistaken, that was a special deal. This is the everyday price. Confusingly, this plan used to be called the "extra small" plan. Or am I confusing it with another MVNO's smallest deal?

      • oh was it?
it's been like that for months actually as I did check from time to time

        • Quote from August deal listed on OzBargain:

Part of the Fathers day deals, Kogan is offering their own $99 365 day mobile plan (about $8.13 per month), but you get 80 GB of data compared to the usual 60 GB

          (emphasis added).

          From https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/719947

So for this plan, the data has gone up, as of at least two months ago. I can see that Kogan previously had a 150GB plan discounted to $120, but that was listed last November, almost a year ago:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/664970

  • I found the comment saying how to purchase using gift cards: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12564979/redir

    Thanks TheLaserSonic!

  • VoLTE doesn't work on Kogan

    • Comments from months ago disagree with you on that: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12567697/redir

      • Been using Kogan for nearly a year, and there's definitely no VolTE - I even called them about it, and they confirmed it's not available

        • How long ago was your last call? Also, not all phones support VoLTE, so they would say "not available" if your phone doesn't support it.

          • @Russ: Month ago - nothing has changed - whenever I get a phone call, data drops out.

Pretty sure Google Pixel 6 Pros support LTE lol

            • @Uncle Roger: I had a dig for the Whirlpool comments that were referenced in the previous Kogan Mobile deal, and linked them in this deal. I've also changed the wording to say "Kogan appear to be rolling out VoWiFi and VoLTE according to comments on Whirlpool".

This Whirlpool comment says that Kogan were previously promoting VoLTE and VoWiFi: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9j0n7k09?p=110#r2185

So most likely they're rolling it out, but not advertising it so their call centers don't get swamped with calls asking how to enable it.

        • +2

I'm with Kogan and just the last couple of days instead of it saying 5G it's been giving me a VoLTE symbol on my phone so not sure what's changed but definitely looks like something has.

        • +1

I'm looking at mg LGK61 right now and it says 'VoLTE', if I switch on my wifi then it changes to 'VoWifi'. Maybe it's not supported in YOUR local area? I'm in outer south east Melbourne.

  • This was $120 for 120Gb a few weeks back when I renewed.

    • Kogan don't have a 120GB 365-day plan any more, you may be on a "grandfathered" plan:
      https://www.kogan.com/au/shop/category/prepaid-plans/?deals_…

The "small" plan has been 60GB for months, as described in this August Deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/719947

I think Kogan renamed and repriced their deals sometime in the last year. The only history I can see is from OzBargain deals. The last mention of a small plan being 120GB was from last November.

      • Definitely not grandfathered as I was previously on their Medium plan for many years. My past year's mobile data usage has only been 40Gb so I decided to switch to the Small plan with it being 120Gb of data (sufficient contingency if my usage increased this year from last year). Plan was bought from kogan.com with a sim included.

Anyway, it was during the time when their Large plan was down to $162 and XL plan was $180. (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725792)

I had bought the Large plan for my wife at the same time.

Had the small plan been 60Gb or 80Gb, I would not have purchased it and gotten the Large plan instead.

        • I see another deal has just been posted: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/732196

It says Kogan still offer renewals on a 120GB "small" plan if you use the URL they sent to you, the URL ends in "-retention/". Or perhaps you can see more plans when you're logged in, that aren't visible to new customers.

If you can't navigate to a deal from the sellers homepage, that's the definition of a grandfathered plan.

          • @Russ: As I said, it's not a grandfathered plan. I have the Small plan bookmarked and it's the same link that you posted.

Every year, when it's time for me to recharge, I check all the Kogan plans and pick the cheapest one with sufficient data for my needs.

Kogan seems to modify their small plan throughout the year, usually varying the price between $99 and $120, and the data between 80Gb and 120Gb. These changes aren't necessarily actively marketed and don't always get posted here so if you're relying on OZB being an absolutely accurate record of the changes to the Small plan, it's not.

Last year I did not jump on the small plan as it was only offering 80Gb of data, but this year it was bumped up to 120Gb so it was suitable for me. You can see me post about it in the L and XL discounted posting above.

Currently it's 80Gb for a cheaper price. And sometime in the next few months, I'm sure they will offer it for 120Gb for $120 again.

            • @Mugsy: Another deal was posted yesterday, linking to a recharge for the 120GB plan. So that plan is still active for those people who were already on that plan. Kogan muddied the waters by calling both that plan, and the plan in this deal, their "small" plan. But both plans are active right now, and they're separate plans, as proven by having different prices and different data allowances.

The 120GB plan is no longer offered to new customers, even though it's still active. Hence it is "grandfathered".

  • Can i share the number with my sim on Apple Watch?

    • +1

      According to Kogan:

Are Smartwatches compatible with an eSIM?
Unfortunately, our eSIMs are not currently compatible with smartwatches, however watch this space for future updates!

From the FAQs section of this page: https://www.koganmobile.com.au/about/esim/

      • Well known that the Apple Watch ONLY WORKS WITH MAIN PROVIDERS, not mvno and not even standalone. You need to have a full paying plan and add Watch esim at $5-$10 extra. So you are looking at minimum $45 a month.

  • They don't have the 20GB per month plan anymore?

  • +2

Currently using Kogan Mobile. Signal is very bad in my location. FYI, check the coverage because Kogan mobile coverage is declining.

    • They use Vodafone, so if Vodafone doesn’t work Kogan won’t work either.

      • Coverage used to be better, now they became bad quality. I will not recommend.

        • Fair enough, but in Sydney CBD and South was better than Belong.

    • Kogan mobile coverage is declining

I really doubt that. Kogan mobile uses the Vodafone network, which is owned by TPG. TPG want to be bigger than Optus, they have been aggressively expanding for years, so I think it unlikely they will be reducing coverage. Unless you are talking about 3G coverage, they want to re-use the 3G frequencies for 5G.

      Coverage map here: https://www.koganmobile.com.au/about/coverage/

You can see the 3G coverage if you select "iphone 4" as your device, it doesn't support 4G.

    • Kogan mobile coverage is declining

I've been doing a bit of research. Back in February, TPG (the owners of Vodafone) did a deal with Telstra, which will allow Vodafone customers to roam onto the Telstra network. In return, Vodafone will allow Telstra to use some of Vodafone's allocated frequencies, and allow Telstra to install Telstra base-stations on Vodafone towers. Both telcos are describing this as a win-win scenario.

This is all awaiting ACCC approval, and I read somewhere (can't find the link ATM) that ACCC's decision is expected "by the end of 2022".

So chances are that Vodafone will soon have better coverage than Optus, as mentioned in some of these articles:

  • I'm after a voice and SMS only plan, no data (so child can't access internet when at school) - any suggestions please?

    • Amaysim do 1 year at $60. You need to change in app so move across with a cheap plan first. Not sure if a $2 sim would also work.

    • How obedient is your child? If you change the APN to a random string, that should block all mobile data - provided your child doesn't look up the correct APN and type it in, or ask a friend to do that.

If so, Aldi Mobile have a $5/year prepaid PAYG plan, which you can add credit to. You'll have to estimate how many calls+SMS your child will make, to work out if this will be cheaper than the $60 Amaysim plan.

  • Op maybe add that currently this recharge it’s only $90 for 120gb.
To get this buy a cheap plan ($1 student or a $2.90 first month) then recharge after month is over or before new 1 year voucher expires https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-prepaid-voucher-co…

      As I replied above:

That's a grandfathered plan, it remains to be seen if Kogan will let you use that plan's recharge if you haven't had that plan before.
