  • Any recommendation for my Camry 215/60R16?

    • +4

      Bro, its a camry 🙄

      • +5

Better tyres help no matter the car, love having Michelin PS4 on my Cruze, noticeably better traction than whatever cheap Chinese crap was on there before.

        • I have cheap tires on my mazda , didnt effect fuel economy or performance. But again its a mazda 3.
2 years and still about 85% tread

          • +2

@easternculture: Have you ever had premium tyres to compare?

            • -1

@CheapBrah: Yep. But didnt bother last time i changed them.
Just told the guy to put cheapest nastiest tires and they turned out ok

The ones on my 4WD other car have been on since 4 years. Passes green slip everytime

But since its 50% off, going to change them

@easternculture: I'm not questioning your driving, but it is the other idiots on the road.

                • +1

@mathew42: Thats why im always 6 to 8 seconds behind 🤣

Ive also noticed time estimated by google maps and driving extra safe is no more than 3 min difference , sometimes less. So im never in a rush. Just cruise and chill.

BTW i drive 80 to 100km per day

                  • +1

@easternculture: Unfortunately, being 6 to 8 seconds behind tempts the rat runners to poke their noses out as they think there is a gap in the traffic. Sadly, I see evidence of crashes of this nature once a quarter on the route I take for school run. Another example is idiots in the left lane on a two lane roundabout who want to turn right.

                  • +8

@easternculture: How is 6-8 seconds even possible in an urban environment? What happens when someone cuts in front of you, you slow down heaps to create a 6 second gap? It's impossible to even keep the required 2 seconds in Melbourne unless you like people cutting in front of you and then slamming their brakes, I probably only leave 1 second to avoid people cutting in front of me which is probably more dangerous than the smaller gap I leave.

The Google maps estimate is pretty conservative, I'm usually arriving sooner than it. On a 80-100km trip I'm guessing I'll be 10 mins sooner if there is substantial urban driving, maybe closer to 5 mins if it's primarily freeway. So I think the difference is much more than 2-3 min.

                    • -1

@CheapBrah: Its a skill that needs alot of patience and concentration.

90% of my driving is highway.

                      • @easternculture: Performance in the wet is what suffers most with cheap tyres. Some cars can stop from 100kmh in <30m- less than the time it takes most people to even begin to brake. So you are correct to drive w 8s behind as reaction time plus necessary braking distance could see you in a rear-end collision if some were to stop hard without warning. Even some trucks can do incredibly short stops now, too.

If you saw a critical problem and braked immediately from 100kmh, you could hopefully stop in 40m, assuming you achieve an average distance. But reaction time normally adds >30m. And you won't stop in 40m on cheap tyres. It gets worse when you add other factors such as poor brakes, extra load, varying inflation pressures, or simply a bad road. You should add >10m for cheap tyres IMHO, but more for those factors, going downhill, poor surface, water or even road contamination. On an ideal surface, cheap tyres add esaily 1/3 braking distance to the distance. Old (hardened) tyres can be even worse.

You can assess longevity when driving sedately, not the performance or safety margin afforded by your tyres. Nevertheless, you are probably correct to use 8-10s. But driving consistently behind the traffic will also cost time and money over a long periods, too- especially if slowing and frustrating everyone else.

It is really necessary to drive near friction limits to begin to measure tyre performance. For example, by changing my tyres I've been able to increase the maximum speed around a bend I know well from 40 to 50, and now nearly 60, before getting any chassis float. And my initial tyres were neither that worn, that bad or that old. However most of us don't even have a corner on which we can drive anywhere near the limit, or even know the road intimately enough to do so.

But the most important thing to avoid accidents remains paying attention. If closer, and able to see ahead, you may actually notice more about what is happening. Too far back and we can miss what happens ahead of the vehicles in front. Get too close and you see far less and have less time to react. And makes worse the effect of a moment's distraction, as we loose any opportunity to brake in time.

In multiple rear-end collisions, which are becoming worse and more common, it is often a bunch of cars stopping fast, and then one that simply isn't paying attention that fails to press the brake at all that causes the majority of the damage, and/or a cascading series of high speed collisions, as those behind it have even less warning. Of course we all get used to driving within the limits of our vehicle, especially now that people have more entertainment devices, social media and phone calls. Many inexperienced drivers are used to hard acceleration/decel with 8 speed gearboxes and bigger brakes and tyres, little warning of lane changes, and the list goes on.

So at the end of the day few consider compounds or expert opinions and tests in their choice, so it is hardly surprising any old tyre will do for some. Price is king, and cheap seems best to most consumers (the reason it is stuffed full of cheap SE Asian tyres that are mostly questionable knock-offs). If we really cared about safety or longevity we'd not be opting for cars with increased centres of gravity, weight, and little ability to corner or crash safely without electronic overrides and relying on airbags to mask poor engineering, and an overload of unnecessary, built-in distractions.

OzB is hardly a performance-oriented forum after all.

@CheapBrah: 6 seconds at 60 km/h is 100m which is just (profanity) insane.

@CheapBrah: That and 5-10km/h under the limit in perfect weather. Probably in the right lane like a knob.

@easternculture: It is other drivers you have no controls of and having a set of good tyres makes a difference when you need the grips. Says this then proceeds to put “ put cheapest nastiest tires” on. Contradictory much?

Tyres are the only thing holding your car to the road. Don’t skimp on tyres. I refuse to use anything cheap and nasty on my cars (PS4 on my car and Duelers on the Tiguan).

                • +1

@eciuj: If you rely on that extra "safety" then your probably driving too hard. My best tip is to watch 2 cars ahead instead of the bumper in front of you.

6-8 seconds causes congestion, imagine if everyone did that.

Says this then proceeds to put “ put cheapest nastiest tires” on. Contradictory much?

All tyres are manufactured to standards which are way above what the average commuter needs. So even the 'cheapest nastiest' are still 'safe' if you drive sensibly.
To put it in context, the cars with the lowest safety ratings today are more safe then the cars with the highest safety ratings from 20 years ago.

    vic only? rip WA

    • I would trade states if all it meant was giving up a deal on tyres.

  • Good deal!

  • +1

None of their WA stores stock Pirellis in my size. Do other tyre places do Black Friday sales?

  • Few people have asked

I got this deal last year.

They over sold By hundreds of tyres last year, they still honoured it,with any model tyre in stock

As long as you buy the tyres on the day, they will honour the price up to Jan 2023

Don't order online,it's best to call ur local shop, the online ordering system doesn't communicate

    • When you say buy on the day, do you mean pay for it also?

Or just order it and pay upon installation?

  • Anyone recommend a good 225/55/18 freeway tyre? The website is frozen.

Also, anyone get the Amex offer on an old Platinum Edge?

  • Wicked deal, bought two sets of 275/70r17 Scorpion All Terrain and they have been great

  • OH FFS, just went to mycar and used bloody mycar AMEX deal for $100 off

  • Okay, did this deal last year for my VW CC. Grabbed some Dragons and they've been fantastic.

Is there a Pirelli that suits my wifes Mazda CX5?

  • well well well when other place ask 550 , they ask 720. WT。。。

    • Still cheaper with 50% off and amex 100 off 400

  • AMEX mycar offer expiries tomorrow :(

    • Mine expires 18/12

    • +1

      18/12/2022, not 18/11/2022.

      • Who wants to bet that payment system wont be working for AMEX cards on that day

      • Good pickup. Now I am happy :)

        • Can't use the amex card on that day

  • anyone got suggestion on tyres other than P Zero's? i feel they are pretty good initially but they wear out really quick =[

    • When you want that level of grip and stability, you sacrifice some mileage.
Other than that, I'd look at the Mich PS4 (now PS5).

    • I'm in the same situation as you. Only got 10,000 kms out of my P-Zero's, not good enough!

I'm replacing them next week with Goodyear Eagle F1 Sport FP XL tyres. They currently have a promotion of 'Buy 3 Get 1 Free' on this tyre at most places, or just get it price matched (what I did).

My first choice would have been Michelin Pilot Sport 5's, but the wait time was 3 months and my tyres need replacing now. Also, they would have been $500 or 36% more expensive then the Eagle F1's, that was a massive difference! After researching these tyres, the Goodyears should be basically just as good as the PS5's.

Anyways, hope they may have helped.

      • Only got 10,000 kms out of my P-Zero's, not good enough!

That seems excessive, they weren't the higher end P-Zeros? Because there are a few different compounds in the same family of tyres.

        • Might be a softer compound P-Zero. They were a specially designed tyre for the Hyundai i20N, they are marked with HN (Hyundai N).

      • They are all soft tyres. Sounds like track and road use?
10k kms.. If not, your driving habits are the issue..not the tyre. Just because your car dows 0-100 in 4 seconds..doesnt mean you need to do it.

        • Might be a softer compound P-Zero. They were a specially designed tyre for the Hyundai i20N, they are marked with HN (Hyundai N).

I haven't tracked the car, mainly just driving to and from work five days a week. I think the best my car could do 0-100 would be close to 6 seconds. Also, it is a hot hatch, be wasted money if I didn't drive it with a bit of enthusiasm. I'm sure the front diff doesn't help the tyre life, but the rears weren't that far behind on wear. Front tyres had 0mm and 1mm left, rears had 3mm each left.

        • @tunzafun001
You're not living up to your name.
          P.s. Yes you do! ;)

      • thank you! i will look into those options you've listed =]

  • The rears with PZero would be cheaper than the Jax deal. But they’re just showing run flats so hopefully they can source non RFT in the size I need.

  • Last week I got VIKING CITYTECH CT6 x 4 for $100 each. I'm not sure if they are good tyres. The guy at mycar said so.

    • viking is the budget range from continental. continental owns mycar, so they would be pushing their tyres..

  • Killer deal in conjuction with the amex cashback.

  • AMEX Offer Terms clearly it says "Excludes purchases made on Black Friday".

Noticed many people mentioning stacking these, but it won't work given this condition.

    • +1

No. You can order (don’t do online) the tyres you want on Black Friday and only pay when it is your turn to fit them. The key is to pay and fit them before the Amex offer expires on 18/12/2022.
Unless this year Mycar specifically allows the 50% off Pirelli tyres online only otherwise there is no problem to double dip with Amex offer.

    • +1

I wonder how Amex can track this if the booking is made on the 25th but payment is made after Black Friday?

      • I think it’s just a term that will not be used. Like can’t buy gift cards… but that works every time … doesn’t even have a date just says “black friday”…. Whats a black friday???

  • -2

    Does it fit CX5?

    • +1

No I think you need balloons for that vehicle

  • Damn the Chadstone store got blocked in. Maybe I'll wait until next years sale.

    • What you mean

      • Chadstone shop was forced to close recently. That whole area is blocked. Its my local store.

  • i got this deal last year but ended up having half price continental tyres as they ran out of Pirelli

    • LOL that’s better than canceling your order unless you think Conti tyres are inferior to Pirelli.

      • yeah worked out even more cheaper

  • So pirelli do a sports tyre anymore?

  • anyone know powergy vs dragon sport?

    • +1

I rang up a store to ask the same question and apparently Powergy is the new updated replacement for the Dragon Sport.

  • The campaign isn't meant to go public till the 23rd. Will see the official site updated then.

  • 100k and never changed or rotated tyres in my suv. May be good time to replace? But wait, amex offer will not be able to stack.

    • Which model tyres you have?

  • Good tyres. Have them on my Audi.

  • Holy crap, I just looked at prices for my car, $739/tyre. They'd want to be bloody 50% off with a retail like that. Now I know why I don't buy Pirelli

    • What size?

      • 295/30 R19

    • Stick with your Chinese tyres then

      • My Advans have been doing the job quite nicely actually.

      • My Chinese Nankang NS-2R sure sticks

  • I got a question if anyone can help. I got a 2020 Mazda 3 Pure which got a smaller spare tyre, which can only be used temporarily (80km max). I think Mazda do this for all their car to save space. I am hoping to replace the spare tyre with a normal tyre so it's not restricted. Does anyone know if the normal size tyre will fit in the spare tyre space? Also, what do I actually need to buy? Would this tyre be enough or I need to buy rim, etc as well? Thank you

    • +6

if your car uses a spacesaver tyre, then the tyre well is not big enough to fit a normal size spare.

      • I thought that's the case. Thank you!

  • P zeros for my car went up $70 since last year

  • hi, i need help, please !
my car is BMW X1, Run Flat tyre.
2 front one only left 1-1.5, 2 back one still have 4

i need replace at least the 2 front one

    question for help
    1. can i only change 2 tyre, 2Pirelli Tyres front + 2Michelin back ?
    2. do i have to purchase run flat tyre as well ? what if 2 normal + 2 runflat(origin one)
    3. Pz4 vs P7 which is one is better?

big thanks for anyone could help, these question bother me a lot

    • +1
      1. You can run different tyres for the front and the back, however it would generally be recommended to run the better grip tyres at the front (if your front and back are the same size).

      2. If you don't install run flats, you have no spare tyre if something goes wrong. Your choice - do you have roadside assistance and prepared to waste several hours?

    • Pz4 vs P7 which is one is better?

Depends on what you want. Tyres offer various properties: grip, handling, braking, wet vs dry, rolling resistance, noise, wear, price etc. What is better depends on what is important to you.

  • Pirelli doesn't have a right load for my car. Is it ok if i use lower load, my car load is 98 but Pirelli only have 94

    • Not advisable.

    • +1

That depends… You can actually run a tyre that is the minimum load rating across your series of vehicle.
E.g. If you have a mid-spec model that runs 18" with a 98 load, but the top-spec model runs 20" with 94 load, you can still run the 94 load in the 18 on your car.

  • Ah the memories. I bought some Pirelli's for the very first car I ever owned. Just about cost more than the car itself but those tyres handle the wet well

  • Any free calendar? ;-)
