  • Hi OP,
Do you have anything with 512gb SSD and 16gb ram? Preferably A Grade?

  • +1

so both the 4gb and the 8gb are soldered?

    • +3

only 4Gb is soldered , 8 Gb is on the slot

      • see later in thread where it turns out to be the other way around. Max 24 GB (8 soldered, 16 DIMM) seems possible.

  • Are these silver or black? Main photo shows both

  • +1

    Currently only black in stock

  • Are these decent for general parent use? Would battery life be cromulent or is it possible to get a replacement battery?

    • +1

depends on how cromulent your parents are.

      • I bought one from this seller in July, been more than cromulent nstuff.

  • +3

These T480s are absolute workhorses! I'm still using the one work has given me 5 years ago. Using it for engineering purposes.

  • Looks like the price has gone back to 460?

    • use the coupon code mention on the deal

      • Thanks, but it says "This code can't be applied to your order."

        • +1

Works for me. I just bought an HP from them, but if I add the Lenovo to my cart and try to checkout the coupon works fine.

Edit : Are you using the XMAS12? That will only work if you are with Ebay Plus. Try XMAS10

I've never understood why people will buy these old laptops that are 5 years old. In this case it's not even new. There are much faster modern laptops at this price point.

    • +7

      Link?

    • +4

Because Thinkpads are known for great build quality, thin & light, backlit keyboard, IPS screen, back removes easily for upgrades or to replace the battery.

    • +6

Unfortunately, most new laptop in the same price range only has half the performance.

People buying 2nd hand items normally know what they are looking for and are price sensitive. If they ended up pay for the item, most likely, it was a good deal.

    • +1

What’s at this price point? Closest I can find is over 800

      • I reckon I've seen some as low as about $600 over the course of the last year or two, but if you need a laptop sometime soon you can't wait for that once in a year perfect sale.

    • +3

There are no better performing modern laptops at this price point from a reputable brand sold new through retailers and at the type of volume which would be appropriate to post here.

You'd be hard-pressed to find any new laptop sold for $400 at all, let alone which performs at this standard. That's to say nothing of the Dell tablet which is an 8th Gen CPU at $330. You can't even find that second-hand on Gumtree, let alone from a store.

The question is how much life you think is left in one of these. As long as it's two or three years they represent a fine value proposition, but barring any physical damage there's no reason one of these shouldn't last another 4 years or longer and be viable. Maybe, maybe you'd need to replace the battery, which in the Thinkpad pretty much anyone can do.

      • +5

I agree. I have just had to get a laptop for my daughter going into year 7. Wound up with a 4yo Dell 7490 i7-8650 touchscreen with upgrade to16GB RAM and 1TB SSD for $660. Booklist devices were over 2 grand, and way overkill for a year 7. Figure if it dies or she loses it will be better off by far, and can replace it in 3 years and still be ahead.

        • Agree, have something similar for the primary school kid. I've kept Lenovos going since 2012 with SSD and RAM upgrades so this 12GB should be just fine for years. As usual with any laptop the thing that's sure to become unusable is the battery in 2 yrs and then you need to check if it's better to get a new battery or another used laptop.

Also the inevitable 'I dropped it' doesn't feel so bad at this price point.

You mean like this magnificent specimen?

  • Thanks for the post OP/bufferstock.

    Regarding…

    12 GB DDR 4 RAM (1 x 4 GB( soldered) + 8 GB on slot )

With reference to other T480s listings and reviews online, it appears 8GB is soldered.

OP/bufferstock, are your current batch of T480s have a unique 4GB soldered? or is it a typo?

  • That is correct , 8gb is soldered , updated the deal here as well . Thanks for pointing it out

    • Can the 4gb be upgraded? And max to what?

  • Is the Dell LTE enabled? D*mn fine price if it is.

    • does come with SIM slot for LTE

      • I take it as no lte module then?

        • the WWAN module is present , so will work on LTE with a LTE SIM

  • Is the dell ram upgradeable

  • Any chance of doing the Dell Latitude 5290 2-in-1 i5 8350u without a keyboard for cheaper?

Have a particular use where the pen would be handy but don't need the keyboard.

  • The coupon is not working???

  • Is $414 considered a good price on the t480s? Asking as I bid $400 on this t490 with 16gb ram which sold for $405 shipped free. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204143834056?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • That one had no warranty. You are Getting a warranty with these ones.

      • If it's working fine in the first month, the chance of it breaking anytime soon is 5% if that.

I rather get something a lot better for just a fraction more.

Worst case if it does break anytime soon one PayPal dispute will solve the issue

  • Do these come with USB C charging?

how many watts is the charger?

    • +1

      It does come with USB - C charger , 45 W

  • We have an i5 Acer with 8GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD. The laptop is so slow. If we go to 12GB and have an SSD will this be faster? Looking at the task manager it looks like the memory is swapping in and out all the time, it's always red.

    • Try SSD 1st. Those with DRAM

  • Any reason why this deal wouldn't also qualify for today's 8% cashback deal from shopback?

    • It wouldn't because shopback promo says "no promo codes"

  • @hunterzz, general use (emails, browsing) how long do you think the battery will last on the Dell Latitude 5290 2-in-1 ? Any warranty?

  • Hope that we could received it by Christmas…

    • Has yours been posted yet? I’m still waiting for mine too

      • Nope….

        • I messaged them on eBay and this was their response:

Tracking number will be updated on the tracking page once its picked up this afternoon

          We’ll see how it goes

          • @HodiernAl: Cheers

            • @edgar28: I’ve gotten a tracking number btw, expected delivery 19 Dec. Hope you got yours too

              • @HodiernAl: Thanks for the update…. Just checked…. It's Jan 2023 😂

                • @edgar28: Damn..

My son seems happy…. That's what matters

                    Battery reported 78%
