  • Reckon these can be used with Breville machines?

    • +9

Can be used with any machine .
      Its just a descaler.
The Breville branded descaler is about $40 for 1L bottle which prompted me to look for an alternative yesterday and found this

      • +1

Yeah, they're all pretty much the same. Though this does seem particularly weak. 5-15% citric acid, vs 10-30% for the Breville (plus some tartaric acid and surfactants). So you might just go through it faster.

        • +2

Just be mindful the stronger it is, its likely to leave a taste

          • +1

@easternculture: True. I usually just buy the coles/woolies descalers for my Delonghi. Pretty sure they're also $5-7 and seems to work fine with the usual flush.

            • +2

@NigelTufnel: Cant go wrong with amazon delivering it to your door lol

              • +3

@easternculture: Amazon delivered my 45 rolls of toiletpaper via Auspost, which I picked up from the post office today. I'm glad I had another parcel and I didn't make a trip to the local post office just to get that…

            • @NigelTufnel: I use them too, but you use half a bottle per descale.

This one says a capful, not sure if it would be strong enough to descale with only that amount.

              • @PVA: This one smells very strong even after dilution.
I used 2 capfuls and could smell it from other side of kitchen

    • +1

      Love your work! Thanks easternculture

  • +1

This works with the breville dual boiler?

  • +7

How is this compared with diluted vinegar?

    • +7

      Both work equally well.
Vinegar can however leave a funny after taste though which takes a few brewing cycles to clear up

But if you have bought a $500+ machine, you better off using the good stuff 🙃

      • +1

I was also thinking lemon juice (fresh or bottled 100% concentrate), I use it for my kettle, haven't tried vinegar though.

      • Descale before your next clean cycle, and it will generally avoid that problem.

    • +1

A squeezed Lemon in some water is better. No funny taste which you may get with vinegar.

      • +4

Agree! Works like magic for kettles.

      • +2

        lemons kinda expensive atm

        • Can get a 500mL bottle of lemon juice for $1.65 at Woolies.

        • -2

expensive ?? Every 2nd house in my street has a lemon tree or two, Full of lemons atm.

          • +2

@z28: unfortunately, not in the new suburb i am in. There arent any lemon trees or any trees.

          • +4

@z28: Every 2nd house in my street doesn't have a lemon tree.

            • @bio: So plant one

              • @1Kenobi: If I plant one then every house in my street would have a lemon tree.

    • +1

Better option is to mix citrix acid (1.5-2 tablespoons) in 1 lt warm water instead of vinegar. Works well and doesnt leave an aftertaste.

    • Read somewhere vinegar gums things up, same with people using it in their dishwasher.

  • +1

    Dont need it. Bought anyway.
    That's the Ozbargain way.

    • +2

    • Which one

      • Amazon

          You mean cashrewards

        • +6

EC is asking which cashback offer, you are talking about the CR $10/$10 deal.

This item is kitchen & dining category, which is 0% cashback, so no good.

Bonus is ineligible if you purchase from a 0% cashback store/cashback rate

      so does a lemon

      • can you get 250ml of lemon juice for $5?

        • +3

you just need 1 lemon to descale, and I get them for free

          • +3

@jv: jv, how can I get them for free?

            • +2

@Jayblesz: Raid neighbour’s lemon tree or like ask them for one

            • @Jayblesz: My neighbour has a tree growing in their front yard

      • Not for an auto coffee machine.

        • You can use a Eureka lemon..

    • That's all this is, it's a 5-15% solution

      • +1

So 37.5g max citric acid in the linked product + water (and other mystery ingredient). That makes the woolies citric acid linked a super bargain!

        • That makes the woolies citric acid linked a super bargain!

For a real super bargain you'd have to go for something like this, only $0.80/100g instead of $4! ;)

        • I used to get the small bottles of citric acid from woolies, but were going through them pretty quick as we have several things needing descaling on a semi regular basis. Much better value is https://www.amazon.com.au/Cafetto-Organic-Restore-Espresso-D…, which is solid citric acid in a coarser crystal.

    • you could try chemical decomposition perhaps?

  • +1

    I just saved $5 !!!

    thanks…

  • Could I know how often need to use it for Breville coffee machine?

    • +1

It should tell you? With a descale light?

      Can also check your manual.

  • My coffee machine specifically advises to not use vinegar so I use the Coles brand coffee machine descaler which is normally $4 per 250ml bottle https://shop.coles.com.au/a/national/product/coles-coffee-ma…

    • +5

Does your coffee machine also advise you to use their specifc brand products 😄

      • 😏

        • Funny my Delonghi advised lactic acid based descaler.

Surely not that big of a difference.

          • +2

@Tehcookiemonsta: If it is a aluminum boiler you shouldn't use vinegar or citric acid.

            • +1

@Aureus: Yeah was thinking about that, it's a thermoblock.

According to Delonghi they don't use aluminium boiler

              • +1

@Tehcookiemonsta: Fair enough. I would still just follow their advice. Not like it is very expensive either way.

              • @Tehcookiemonsta: The thermoblock is literally a cast piece of aluminium with an element attached to it

                • @tunzafun001: Not sure about the thermoblock been trying to find more info on that, i was mentioning that the boiler does not use aluminium

  • Does it work in cold water as well? Just and idea about shower cleaning…

  • Thank you. Hope this helps my green/orange light of death on the vertuo

  • Thanks, got it

  • -1

    Thanks. Got 5.

  • What about cleaning up grey gunk (presumably bacterial growth) from washing machines?

    • There are specific tablets for that

    • +3

That usually occurs if you only use the cold water program. Run it (empty) in the hottest and longest program with 1/4 cup of Napisan in the detergent drawer (or any cheaper alternative that contains sodium percarbonate) and it should eliminate or reduce the sludge.

      • The hottest ours goes is 60 degrees. Is that hot enough? I've tried a number of empty runs on that but without napisan. I'll give it another go

        • +2

It depends on how filthy it is, but a few runs at 60C with a disinfectant (i.e. Napisan) should remove most of it.

  • How often are people descaling their machines?
I’ve had my Breville Dual Boiler for 4 years and never done it. Never had a message to do so.
I’m on rainwater tanks could that be the reason why?

    • Rain water has minerals too.

    • my deloghi primadonna comes up the screen to descale

    • It doesn't rain a bell

    • +2

rainwater tanks could that be the reason why

Rainwater is generally much 'softer' than town water. You usually have to set the water hardness when setting up the machine, and that dictates the length between when it will prompt you to descale (harder = more often). So potentially you're okay. 4 years seems like a long time between descales though if you're using it regularly.

    • +2

It doesn't actually measure the amount of scaling in your machine, there is a counter that will warn you after a number of cups of coffee. The actual number depends on your water hardness setting. You may not be making a lot of coffee.

Do you also have an electric kettle? How does that look? Normally after 4 years with no descaling you shouldn't be able to see the bottom of the kettle.

    • Don’t bother , lots of people have stuffed it up trying to descale. Just get it serviced

    • Our auto machine you set the water hardness, has a water filter etc , still need a descale so rain water will still need it too. Maybe that notification is turned off or it doesn’t have one.
I’m guessing descale message pops up 1 or 2 times a year … we do make a lot of coffees though. Machine says it’s at 17000 (last time I checked)
So buying a premade descaler for $5 is not much really.

  • +2

Wow you guys have bought up all the stock in less than an hour.

    Now its on backorder

    • "This is the way!" :)

    • +1

i have been using this descaler on my delonghi coffee machine for about a year - works great - ive been using more than a capful though - i probably get about 4 descales per bottle

how's your machine going with only a capful?

      • Only bought yesterday and delivered today.

        • see how you go - i reckon ive been using about 60/70ml per descale - with great results so far - if yer doing a kettle and letting it soak as per instructions etc then a capful is probably fine - every other descaler ive used says use 100 ml for coffee machines - so who knows?

          • @avtek: Ill probably use 50mls per descale.

I only make 2 coffees per day and have anti-limescale spheres in the water tank

The bottle should last a year

        • The ones bought at Woolies , you use half a bottle (125ml). One cap wouldn’t descale I’d think.

  • +2

    Thank You OP.

  • +7

Bought. Now I need to find a coffee machine
