    How much are the colour toners?

    • +3

      This is the important question, people get hung up on the price of a printer but end up paying much more for consumables over its life. Drums, fusers, transfer belts and toners.

    • +3

      Genuine toners -:
      * Black Extended Life $162
      * Cyan $120
      * Magenta $120
      * Yellow $120

      • +4

        So, the toners altogether cost more than the printer…

        I'm happy to carry on living my life without owning a printer.

        • +2

          Black and white units are ok, since you only need to buy 1 cartridge. Colour laser - you're better off going to Officeworks for when you need it occasionally.

          • @happychappy1: can you replace the black only?

            • +1

              @May4th: Yes, they’re all independently replaceable.

              • @CamM: However my experience with brother colour laser printer (mfc 8690, and LC-L8260) is that even you only print black and writer, colour toner still be consumed and need to be replaced. It ends up that most of the time, all the toners have to be replaced more or less at the same time.
                I am not sure whether it applies to colour laser printers of other brands.

                • +1

                  @seniordoc: I own this model and have not had issues with toner needing replacement at the same time. Maybe I’m just lucky, but I can only comment based on my own experience. Replaced the black toner earlier this year and my original CMY toners are still going strong with plenty of life left in them.

                  • @CamM: I print mainly black and write documents and hate to replace the colour toners even I do not use it. I print mainly pdf files (black and white mode) and MS Word documents. Maybe I have wrong settings, but I have already updated the printer driver.

                    What printer driver and software do you use to print the black and white documents?

                    Are you using the genuine toners?

                    Thank you.

                • @seniordoc: @seniordoc - Just a tip - maybe you know - when printing black only - make sure (in the settings) that the printer uses Black only and NOT composite black to print black and white. When you select composite black - it uses the 3 colours - CMY - to compile a black looking color that has a slight purple haze to it. - hope that helps….

                  • @aussieaubs: Hi Aussieaubs, how to do that? I actually have brother mfc-8690 cdw, but I cannot find how to Black only.
                    Could you show me or any link?
                    Thank you.

      I've been using aftermarket toners for years and they work fine.

        Just don't update the printer firmware. I did and now it refuses to recognize inkstation toners.

        • Was that a Brother printer, or a HP printer? I know HP are trying to get their printers updated constantly to avoid aftermarket toners being used.. obviously turning off the update feature as soon as you purchase a HP machine, will then allow you to use aftermarket toners once the new chips arrive for those toners. You'll have to check with who you purchase the toners from, to ensure that their toners will work with your current firmware.

          • @damian1079: Yes Brother and now checking for chips and genuine toners..

            @damian1079: Brother MFC-L3770CDW

            The lesson is block firmware updates. I've been searching the web for a suitable firmware to downgrade. Has anyone got a copy?

            • @CacheHunter: What version to look for? I have cancelled my 2 units as it is likely to have the more recent firmware and there is no possible downgrade method found.

  • Shows as $549 for me

  • +2

    this comes up for $330 on goodguys commercial from time to time if you dont' need it in a hurry

    • +1

      $330… really? Do you have any proof of this price? That's way lower than cost price.
