[Kogan First] Steam Deck 64GB $849, 256GB $999, 512GB $1199 Delivered @ Kogan

2970

Kogan are selling all variants of the Steam Deck. Appears to be the first major Australian retailer to sell the Steam Deck though there are other marketplace sellers if you want to roll the dice on warranty. Press Start has a roundup of some cheaper alternatives here. The 256GB price is approximately $100 more expensive than a VPN/US card/post forwarding solution that works out to $891.25 AUD based on Shipito (Oregon tax-free) and Mastercard exchange rates. That $100 might be worth it for people who want Australian warranty and to avoid the complexities of shipping it yourself (your mileage with Kogan warranty may vary). Also keep in mind the extensive self-repair options.

If you are holding out for a local stockist, bets are EB will stock it with similar price to the US (based on Valve index sales) though there has been no announcement. Also the AUD is expected to climb against the USD this year.

Remember, this is the steam and the greater Valve company that owns it here.

A company that is so content, they can do nothing for years with their ips and 50k+ people still play their decade+ old titles on a daily basis. That kind of online game retention from titles that haven't been updated for ages.

But I am interested in seeing if Epic's free titles strategy is gaining market share on the PC game selling platform at a good rate or not.

      • +7

I think the bigger threat is Xbox Gamepass for PC. Terrible platform but I no longer spend money on Steam sales on games I will never play because its all in my Xbox gamepass library.

        • with a fair bit of stuffing around and tweaking apparently this can run game pass too…

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: You can stream Game Pass using xcloud/your home Xbox, or if you install Windows you can install Game Pass for PC stuff too.

            • @theguyrules: yeah i already do that with my OG Xbone , ipad pro, and pc - but just thought in this day and age, it would have been a more streamlined process to get it working on steamdeck.

I mean..its not hard to get it running according to the guide I just glanced at but still.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Gamepass can stream, but I'm pretty sure all the streamed games are console variants.

        • Xbox's cloud gaming service is legit these days.

    That thing is ugly AF

    • +15

Ergonomic though. I find it comfortable for decent gaming session lengths.

      • +3

for these kind of devices ergonomics is definitely king

        • +3

No doubt. The weight does add up eventually but it's amazing how comfortable it is. Also the heat management is great - it can get so hot but no where near your hands (unless you're doing a lot of touch screen stuff)

  • +1

    based on Valve index sales

    TIL EB sold the Index

    • +1

Sells. I think it's even in stock now.

      • +1

Guess that shows how closely I follow the VR scene these days lol

  • +12

Not to poop on this deal, but I just bought the 256gb yesterday for $867. It comes back into stock sporadically:
    https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/vchain-steam-deck-256gb-…

    • +12

Poop away my dude, I saw that one too but it was sold out and I thought it was a bit of an anomaly. Definitely worth a post when it's back in stock.

    • I guess you'd have used GCs from SB which would have reduced the cost by 2% further?

    • Is it from a third party seller?

  • +9

I'd wait for the next version, Hopefully with an OLED panel.

    • +3

I'm hopeful that an OLED panel will pop up down the line, with Valves commitment to repairability and spare part availability.

  • +12

I definitely trust NAB to predict future movements of the AUD

    • +5

      HA, true.

But i'm still impressed with the OPs thoroughness with the post

  • +2

I was lucky enough to get one November last year (have a family member in Canada). I went with the 64gb, as the 512GB Micro SD's are easy to swap out, and often go on sale for around 70ish now and again!

  • 64gb version will better choice you can replace ssd yourself to large and fast one and for 399USD price should less then 650aud RRP

Replacing the ssd also need restores the steam OS by yourself very simple

  • +5

I think I paid about $1600 to get the 512gb model from the US a while back.

I haven't tested the non-matte version, but in ambient sunlight the screen at max brightness is functional in any game that's not too bright. I figure the non-matte version would be pretty much unplayable in ambient sunlight conditions.

EDIT: Correction, I paid $1,280. Turns out I'm not a total chump

  • Do people really want to play pc games like that on the go? I understand the need for gaming laptops but this is just way too much to game whilst you are pooping.

    • +20

Never underestimate the amount a person can poop

    • +2

      Yes

Browse the Deck Flex Megathread on the Steam Deck subreddit and you'll see plenty of occasions of people playing it everywhere

    • +10

If Gameboy/DS sales are anything to go by, I'd say people do.

    • +7

      game whilst you are pooping.

Pooping / Gaming on company time mate.

      • +5

Gotta wear your best cargo pants to hide the steam deck in your pocket when you sneak off to the bathroom 😛
Of course, not a problem when WFH

    • +3

Bud, you have not experienced shitting until you you do it while screaming at kids in over watch. Clears all bowel movement from anger.

    • +4

Not just PC games but pretty much every console game up 2007 if you install RetroArch ;)

      • +4

        Can also Emulate PS3 Games

        • +2

          That's awesome

    • +2

My Steam library is in the thousands, my backlog is immeasurable.
I get an hour lunch break at work every day in which I mostly just browse reddit anyway.

This thing would do wonders for chipping away some of that over time.

      • have u hit the preorder button yet D:

        • +1

Nah I'm iffy about Kogan/Dicky's third party.reselling, for something like this I want any potential warranty issues to be smooth and as above board as possible.

I saw this deal as early as mid December but decided to pass on it until something a little more official comes to Aus.

    • +1

I literally only bought mine to play wow while pooping lol. Use it more than my PC though. Just so convenient.

    • -1

you think pc games are different from switch games?

      All of them?

    • Me who got a new born baby, sitting down in front of my PC is a no no.

  • +4

Hopefully this will push the Switch 3.0 to be more powerful.
    The OLED was disappointing.
But the Steam Deck needs to be 20-40% cheaper.

    • +17

The Steam Deck is already sold at a loss. Good luck with 20-40% cheaper. Seen the alternatives?

        • +13

          Isn't it obvious?

Valve getting people buying more games on Steam.

It's absolutely sold at a loss. Like I said, look at the other hand held PC's if you wanna see frightening prices, many of them are $2k.

        • +9

It's sold as a loss leader to get the platform and store into more hands, so they make money off game sales. It's a common strategy in the console industry. Good luck building a similar system for U$ 400.

          • +1

@SydStrand: Some of these new models get me really excited, only to see the price…..

Rock and a hard place. It seems silly buying a Steam Deck when it's been delayed in Australia so long, but the alternatives are stupidly expensive….

Rumour suggests next Deck will be more Switch OLED like, better screen, better battery. They won't alienate their existing user base with different performance. That would be interesting, if it came out worldwide simultaneously, which I doubt it would…

            • @scuderiarmani: Really hope they do it soon because the current supply chain is about to be screwed up permanently in the not too distant future…

              • @Valowick: I won't hold my breath. The whole situation with these stinks. I can't understand why we haven't gotten it yet now stock has improved.

            • +3

@scuderiarmani: It's definitely disappointing that it's still not sold officially in AU, especially as production has ramped up and they've opened orders in Japan, Korea, etc. At this stage, the Steam Deck is nearly 11 months old, and I'd be more inclined just to wait until Steam Deck 2 and cross fingers that it launches here.

        • +4

What they lose selling the Deck, they make up in software sales

        • +1

if you dont know manufacturing costs stop talking about it like you do

      • -8

Playing games on your $1k-$2k mobile phone (which you already have) would be the way to go…
Just have the PC games ported to iOS and Android.

If the Switch can have their console priced at $400 and PS5\XB1 priced at $700, Steam would be more competitive if they priced their at $700 also.

      • +2

I've heard that repeated but it's not sourced aside from Gaben briefly and vaguely talking about the pricing. I think it's more likely that the margins are tiny, especially on the 64GB model, rather than being sold at a loss.

        • +4

No one knows what the exact margin is, because we don't have access to Valve's bulk pricing, especially on the custom APU. What's fact is that even excluding the display, battery, etc., no hobby builder can come close to matching the Steam Deck's price to performance, and other companies' comparable x86 handhelds like Ayaneo, Ayn, GPD are 2-3x the price. Maybe Valve's barely breaking even, but loss leading is also plausible.

          • @SydStrand: It's plausible but I often see it stated as fact, often to make it sound like Gaben is blessing us with his benevolence. I'm not saying that's what's being done here but it's more accurate to say that the Steam Deck is priced very aggressively, rather than drawing conclusions that can't be supported by evidence. As you say, no one outside of Valve knows the margins.

I'm don't disagree that it's probably priced as low as it can be and certainly, in comparison to the competitors it's a bargain (Aya Neo, holy Christ), but misinformation is misinformation.

            • +3

@Diji: When competitors are 2-3 times the price. The writing is on the wall.

Those competitors need to make profits on Hardware sales. Valve doesn't.

If it barks like a dog…

            • @Diji: so why are competitor handhelds almost double the price? Why are laptops with similar hardware inside double the price?

              explain that

              • @Freestyle: I don't know, I don't like making assumptions and calling it fact. :)

    • Switch OLED was a good improvement in the portability IMHO.

Agree the steam deck is expensive. Considering a lot of games get ported and playing games on a Galaxy Fold 4 with a 8 bit do controller is sweet (I think that just shot my expensive argument though!!)

      • -1

I already have a fold, so gaming on it seem the most cost effective.

        • It's good isn't it? The 8 bit do controllers are great to pair with it

  • +3

I guess my only concern is the warranty through kogan lol. Are they grey imports?

    • +8

considering theres yet to be an official AU stockist, yes.

    • +8

There is only grey imports for Steam Decks given that there is no official launch in AU. The stock is most likely from Chinese scalpers who sold them for the Chinese market. They were selling for $2000 AUD in China a few months ago but now that Steam Deck stock is overflowing on Taobao, it is likely that Kogan got their hands on it.

I would only recommend this for anyone who cannot wait any longer for official Steam decks.

      • +1

        $2000 AUD in China

How unreal is the China domestic market right

        • weird they make it there and yet sell it higher than the rest of the world buys it at.

          • +2

@dbmitch: too many bored rich kids from 1 child families drowning in dirty money eager to find the next hyper exclusive flex for tiktok and similar

            • @Jimothy Wongingtons: probably, I did hear tiktok in china is a very different platform, 'educational'/Be a good citizen content only. Flexing your wealth = Idiot that just got their parents' company taxed harder.

            • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Pretty sure most of the family cash is actually in Sydney and Melbourne apts now, dunno how the poor guys afford a Steam Deck too?

          • +1

@dbmitch: The Chinese government is notoriously slow in approving the official launch of consoles or anything. This means that whilst many things are made in China, average Chinese consumers often need to buy from grey markets for non-official products.

Also Steam is in a bit of a predicament in China. Essentially, there are two: official Steam China with CCP-approved games only and Steam with the region set to China. This means that it is unlikely that there will be an official Steam Deck in China anytime soon unless CCP gives them a thumbs up on some Steam Deck Chinese Edition. If there is, it will have limitations similar to the official PS and Xbox.

TL;DR: it is often the case of high demand and no OFFICAL supply in China, thus high prices.

        • Remember Samsung sells a phone that's above the S22 Ultra in China, Aussies cant even get Samsungs top phone because they think aussies are poor.

      • Going by how long the Valve Index was till released in Australia … the wait might be a long time.

  • +8

Like others, I bought the 64gb from the UK and had a friend ship it over (around $60 shipping for 1 week), replaced the ssd with a 1tb for around $200-220 from alibaba, and bought a 1tb microsd. Very happy all up - only thing i dont love is the battery life is pretty awful on higher end games…….

  • +10

i'm going to wait till it's not a grey import. Too bleeding edge and new tech to risk going for a grey import and relying on kogan warranty

    • +1

      agreed tbh

    • Yeah way too bleeding edge tech to gamble the warranty side of things.

    • +1

Hasn't it been out for like 1 year and a half already?

      • officially released just under a year ago (late feb 2022), but that was a US release.

        Australia release hasn't happened yet.
