[Kogan First] Steam Deck 64GB $849, 256GB $999, 512GB $1199 Delivered @ Kogan

2970

Kogan are selling all variants of the Steam Deck. Appears to be the first major Australian retailer to sell the Steam Deck though there are other marketplace sellers if you want to roll the dice on warranty. Press Start has a roundup of some cheaper alternatives here. The 256GB price is approximately $100 more expensive than a VPN/US card/post forwarding solution that works out to $891.25 AUD based on Shipito (Oregon tax-free) and Mastercard exchange rates. That $100 might be worth it for people who want Australian warranty and to avoid the complexities of shipping it yourself (your mileage with Kogan warranty may vary). Also keep in mind the extensive self-repair options.

If you are holding out for a local stockist, bets are EB will stock it with similar price to the US (based on Valve index sales) though there has been no announcement. Also the AUD is expected to climb against the USD this year.

    • A gaming NUC like this with steam big picture mode would be better for your use case. You should also put Windows on it for better game compatibility.

      • Again though, I'd like to treat it like a gaming console. Sit on the couch, wake it with a controller, launch games with the controller, sleep with a controller, walk away.

If I'm having to boot a Windows PC and use a mouse and keyboard, I can't see myself using it often.

        • +1

yeah fair, if you're comfortable tinkering with Linux distros, you could try SteamOS and Proton GE. Configure boot on USB/LAN in the UEFI. But for that much DIY you've probably lost the convenience factor you were after.

      • +1

woah what the heck? Ive been out of the loop for NUC's for years, always thought of them as boxy little things only good for light office work - this thing looks sexy as hell?!

    • +4

      To answer you question:
      - It should be ok but I'd recommend discharge the battery once in a while. There has been reports of Deck's battery degraded in capacity after intensive usage. When not in use it went into standby mode which can be easily turned on with the power button.
      - Yes it can be woken up by using a Steam controller (wireless) or a wired controller via a dock or with keyboard and mouse.
      - Yes you can install Hero Launcher which support both Epic and GOG games.

      • Great reply, thanks!

      • "Yes you can install Hero Launcher which support both Epic and GOG games."

Do you mean in SteamOS? Since you can install the Epic game launcher in Windows.

        • +1

          "Do you mean in SteamOS?"

Seems to be the case, yes. Which is good for my use-case of connected directly to the TV with no mouse & keyboard.

        • +1

Yup with SteamOS. You might find it surprising that not all Deck owners dualboot their Decks.

    • +2

why not get something like this

3060, lots of storage, compact. hook it up to TV for watching whatever you want and gaming, too

      • +1

        wow all gone

    • +1

I have a dock (not official one) and it's definitely not as plug and play as the switch - yet. You can use it in desktop or normal (big picture mode), Xbox and PS5 controllers work with no issues. You can put it into sleep and resume like the switch. However I don't believe the controller can wake the deck (yet) but I could be wrong. I've managed to get epic working, it's really easy via heroic launcher and you can integrate the app into steam or the even games individually. You need to tweak some epic games from my experience with different proton versions etc but it's not hard with the average person.

    • +1

Funny enough, you are describing the Steam Machine. Definitely a product that was to ahead of its time.

  • it was about $700 yesterday for 64gb model.

    • Yes, $691. I bought one :)

      • +1

        I got the same price.

    • -1

      Why didn’t you post it?

      • because it's kogan

  • Didn't honestly think Steam Deck would get so much support from the OzBargainers!

Compared to the eBay/FB price I think def worth it.

  • +1

Under Specifications - In the box, the 256GB and 512GB models list "1 x AU/NZ Charger" but the 64GB does not.

I'm hoping this is just a mistake in their listing details…

    • Most likely just shipping with a travel converter.

  • +5

I bought mine about a month ago from StockX for $719. My favourite purchase in the last 2 years.

    • Any issues with getting the unit from StockX?

I came across that site while searching for cheaper decks, but just wasn't sure about the site's legitimacy.

      • Sorry haven’t logged on in a while. Absolutely no issues. It’s very similar to bidding on EBay. Prices should be going down because there is so much available stock in the US now.

  • This or PlayStation Vita?

    • +2

Some people like using the steam deck for old emulation of games, the vita is actually a super capable emulator of classic games

      • Actually considering buying another Vita after so many years just to play DJ MAX handheld again.
Dunno if the steam deck can support the back touch buttons either for Technika.

        • +2

dj max on vita, damnnnnn that takes me back!

my vita was actually just a (however much the RRP was back in the day), dedicated p4 golden machine.
I played EASILY over 150 hours, finished it 4-5 times. So good. Perfection. God i wish i could go back and re-experience it fresh.

        • Isn't the Vita already end of life?

          • +1

@proudwanderer: yes - i wasnt sure if fiddy was just trolling or was being serious.

          • @proudwanderer: End of life as in the official support from Sony? I think it is still ‘young’ for modding and home brewing.

            • @wtfnodeal:

End of life as in the official support from Sony

I read it as in EOL cant buy it new in retail anymore?
i see there is some japan import options on amazon..but surely that's just old stock a shop is sitting on.

    • This has better joysticks, Vita is way smaller. Screens are comparable apart from Vita OLED being great. YMMV

    • Vita is smaller, more comfortable and portable, but that's about it. The Steam Deck is much more versatile and can emulate everything that Vita can, including Vita Games.

    • I assume you want it for emulation? Buy a Miyoo Mino if you want the portability and ability to emulate on the go for games before PS1/Xbox. Any other emulation use the steam deck.

  • Shame the screens are low quality, should be at least 100% srgb. Maybe steam deck 2 will improve one it

    • it's taken close to 2 years from announcement to Australian supply, not gonna wait another 2 years once steam deck 2 is announced.

  • how many games work on this thing? can i play rust on it?

  • -3

there are so many handhelds when it comes to x86 platform, SD is imo the ugliest look……..

    • The ugliest look but the best supported for steam os

    • I have had 2 so far, the original onexplayer and the steamdeck… I much prefer the steam deck, windows is crap on a handheld and the fans were a nightmare in the onexplayer, almost always on and way louder (like a hairdryer almost).

And a lot more convenient as it has wider support.. Emudeck is a huge time-saver.

  • +2

What do people estimate the RRP to be if it ever comes to Australia officially?

    • Minimum $599. May be $649 for the base model. I think they have sold in other markets with a slight premium over the us price.

      • +2

No way it's that cheap. Even just converting USD price to AUD it's only just under this. Then you've got 10% GST and an Australian tax. Minimum at least $699. Wouldn't be surprised if it's more.

        • I just based my calc based on the ps5 pricing. AUD is getting stronger now so you never know.

      • +1

Converting the current 399 us to aud then adding in GST gets you close to $650. Then there is always a little extra cause Straya… I reckon base model will be minimum $700. The other good questions is when. Index took over 2 years

    • Probably 800. Jb seems to upcharge 150 bucks over original rrp for most devices they get, and that number includes gst.

    • +1

It would be way more than many of you are predicting. The valve index costs $1899.95 AUD at ebgames but on steam it is only $999 USD. I would expect the same markup if ebgames starts selling the Steam Deck.

    • Bought mine back in August last year for 512GB model for 679 Euro directly from steam which equates to around $1050.
If and when steam decides to start selling to Australia (non important market in terms of potential volume to sell) i would suspect it would be similar or less as EU has a larger GST/VAT than Aus.

I just changed my Steam Store location to France and picked it up when I was there.

    • $800

  • Bought mine off stock x for about the same price. 64gb model and upgraded to 1tb off a ssd from alibaba.

    • Care to share Alibaba link?

      • Just search for Gioneda. It’s a sk hynix ssd

    • how long did your stock X order take?

  • Is this just PSP but with Steam games? Or Switch with PC games loaded on SDcard?

    • +1

Well unlike psp, this thing has a decent game library… with full on games instead of watered down ports in some instance

    • No. It's a handheld machine with steam games/emulation capability.

  • 64 and 256gb updated to say ship 17th, 512 ship eom

  • +1

Got one from StockX too. 2TB SSD. Amazing for emulating older systems. Used it more in the last month than my gaming machine for 3

    • +1

If you just want emulation for older systems, there's tonnes of better options

      • I wanted to play games on the go too. I’m really enjoying it and I’ve got FPGA emulators, full arcade style controllers. Can’t beat the portability. It is a well made machine

        • I meant there's better options for portability. But fair enough with the rest of it

          • @Orion au: Which has better compatibility than it? A part from running OG Xbox and some PS2 games? It can run almost the whole history of gaming.

            • +1

@RocketSwitch: It really depends what you mean by 'older'. Most of anbernics devices will run 8/16/32/64 bit eras, as well as arcade, with no worries. And cost under $200. Same with a retroid pocket 3+, which will start emulating GameCube and ps2 (not well). The ayn odin lite/pro will emulate these next systems too, with some Wii/switch to boot for less than $400 (or there abouts) iirc.

Yeah the deck is a powerful machine and I'd love to have one, but unless you're really after something that can emulate ps3 and Xbox 360, I'd say there's tonnes of better options in terms of investment price and still remain portable.

              • @Orion au: i am keen to play og PS2 kingdom hearts and dark chronicle again hopefully on SD…

                • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Great games! I don't know for sure, but I reckon they'll both play on the Odin devices if you can't wait.

              • +1

@Orion au: Thanks for chiming in, that makes sense!

              • @Orion au: I have an odin lite and pro (well just sold the lite and will sell the pro)..

The Steamdeck is bigger but the emulation ability is higher for sure. Switch sucked on the odin and even wii and ps2 are much better on the SD.

Odin still doesn't fit in pocket easily, so it goes in a case in my bag and with that I really don't see a huge need for the smaller size of the odin.

                • +1

@joele: Of course. The Deck will run those systems much better. I fully acknowledge that.

                  It's also twice the price.

When I said there were better options, I was taking price into account as well as ability.

If PS2 and Wii etc are the priority, then the Deck is better. TBF though, most PS2 is playable on the Lite/Pro. I was only replying to emulation 'of older systems', of which I'd consider the Deck overkill for the vast majority. If you want PS2 and beyond, as well as PC, obviously the Deck is a great choice.

  • I am really tempted and have seen few more articles - https://press-start.com.au/news/tech-news/2023/01/08/the-ste…

I worry about these retaillers being as good as valve for any RMA/warranty issues that we see with US/Asia units. Ill wait a bit more to get my hands on directly from Valve.

  • Kogan warranty not to be trusted imo. Very bad experience with purchasing their extended warranty.

  • As someone who got a 512gb in December for about $1200 off stockx, these prices aren't terrible

  • I've been in the market for a switch. Currently waiting for the OLED to go on sale.
With all of these new hand held devices, will I regret buying the switch?
I understand these newer devices are much more expensive, but I wonder if they will drop in price? And should I just cough up the money for new tech. Hmmmm

    • +1

Yes the price of the steam deck should lower when it finally releases in Australia but who knows when that is. I wouldn't worry about buying the switch over the steam deck, they're both great consoles with a good stack of games to play. I guess the tradeoffs are upfront vs ongoing costs and 'just works' vs customisability. Steam deck has higher upfront costs but lower ongoing game costs as you can just use your steam library. Switch is the opposite. Also the switch will just work and every game will play as intended but you can do a whole bunch of customisation/tweaking on the steam deck like drive upgrades, desktop applications and emulators.

    • +2

You won't regret getting a switch because a switch is still a Nintendo console. I own alot of devices and switch still see play.

Otoh, my win max 2 is my main gaming device. My xbox, my gaming pc, my gaming laptop and my switch barely gets touched nowadays.

    • Do you have a big Steam library? I'd still say this and the Switch will co exist nicely.

  • Guys, if anyone is trying to get this as cheap as possible I’d wait until that Dick Smith one for the 64gb model comes back in stock (the one that’s in the 600s price range).
As someone who got a steam deck in October, I kinda didn’t realise the different batches of cash I would end up spending on the other peripherals before I was happy with my setup.
I got a makeshift dock (before purchasing a better one), the plastic Logitech wireless keyboard/trackpad combo (before getting rid of the POS and getting a Steam Controller instead) etc etc.
just keep in mind you’ll be spending more than the original cost for the Deck to get the most out of it, and it may be more than you originally expected (just from my experience)

    • What dock did you end up with? Was your issue with the keyboard that it just doesn't work as a setup or the Logitech product itself?

      • For a keyboard (for couch gaming), I got a Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 Plus, which to be frank, was just an awful device. It was about 70 bucks and somehow felt even cheaper than that. Touchpad felt like shit to use, wasn't very responsive, and my couch is less than 3 metres from the TV and the connection didn't work like 20% of the time. Awful product. Which is weird cause I buy logitech for everything and their products are excellent.
To remedy that, I eventually just bought a second hand Steam Controller so I could have the best of both worlds when it came to gaming on the couch with games that may need a touchpad. A much better investment, really happy with that one.

For a dock, I purchased a regular usb-c dock with all the expected inputs I’d need, and a separate dumb-stand. At the time I was buying these, there wasn’t really much in the way of trusted third-party docks available and the Steam Deck Dock hadn’t come out (let alone be available in Australia), so this was really my only option.

But I found that it was just annoying carrying around two separate devices everywhere that acted as the dock. And more annoying to disassemble, pack, and re-assemble every time I went somewhere.

It wasn’t the end of the world but I ended up purchasing a third-party dock similar to Steam’s official version. Just a bit more streamlined and less fiddly experience.

So, yeah. I spent more money that I expected on getting the Steam Deck experience to be as good as I hoped it would be. It’s definitely paid off, the Deck is absolutely amazing and has totally changed how and what I play. An incredible device, but unless you’re permanently portable, there’s gonna be some extra cost involved in getting the device to do exactly what you want in the most comfortable way.

    • would love to know what accessories/upgrades you bought/made

      • +1

Of course - firstly was a 1tb card which I think is to be expected.

For a keyboard (for couch gaming), I got a Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 Plus, which I just found was a terrible product (I elaborated more in an above comment) so I purchased a Steam Controller second-hand which now satisfies in that department.

For a dock, I purchased a regular usb-c dock with all the expected inputs I’d need, and a separate dumb-stand. There weren't really any other options at the time. It looked good but was a bit annoying to carry around a stand, usb-c dock, HDMI and a charging cable everywhere I went. So I bought a third-party dock that's like steam's official dock. Hoping that will make it a little bit less irritating to disassemble and assemble.

In addition, I bought a bunch of random cheap controllers for different console systems I wanted to emulate, some worked better than others. For the most part this was a dead end and I’ve just ended up sticking to an Xbox controller for any of that.

So, yeah. I spent more money that I expected on getting the Steam Deck experience to be as good as I hoped it would be. It’s definitely paid off though. The Deck is absolutely amazing and once set up the way you need it, is just peerless.

    • +1

Just a FYI I think that price was a pricing error. I ordered the 256gb from that seller at $1009 then hrs later it dropped to $867 (along with the drop of the 64gb to $691) I ordered at the new price and cancelled the first order. Seller (Vchain) advised 2nd prices was staff error but has honoured ( bloody legends)

      • Well lucky us then.
Currently their price is back to $824.

  • +3

The 64gb model i got a few nights ago for $691 on kogan (via vchain) has just dispatched. Keen to get Emudeck up and running once it comes in.

  • Anyone who preordered w kogan can they confirm if it charges at time of order or charges at time of shipment?

  • I read 4 pages of comments n haven't found anyone with this question : can you play non-steam games on steam deck ? I googled it and found it's possible but noone tells if it's worth doing so (i.e. the games need to be modified in order to be played on handheld devices) so it might be possible to install it but it's not playable. Has anyone tried it ?

    • +3

Yep you can install non-steam games, just be sure to check if they're working with proton. All windows games have to go through the proton compatibility software to work on the linux-based Steam Deck. For Epic and GOG games try Heroic launcher. For emulation, try Emudeck. If you have Gamepass ultimate you can even cloud stream your gamepass games.

    • +1

What game were you worried about?

      • I checked the proton db and it's all good now. I'd like to play diablo 2/3, the witcher, skyrim, fallout 1/2/3/4 etc… some are playable , some are not but it's good enough for me.

        • oh damn didnt even think of d2/d3.

          D2 remaster looks sick

        • I know someone's probably said this to you already but a lot of those are available on steam and play perfectly fine… Of course that may require you re-buying them for the simplest experience which sucks.

  • I'm confused, steam deck supports internal memory, microsd slot, and nvme 2230 slot? Or is the internal memory just another name for microsd slot?

Also, does anyone also use both microsd and nvme slot at same time or can you only pick either microsd or nvme?
