  • Was looking at the 'Stanley Mechanics Tool Kit 133 Piece' in the email, to be listed at half price tomorrow ($249); some mixed reviews, curious if any OZBer's had any experience with the unit.

Not this unit, but I'm looking for a tool chest so here are some thoughts based on my research

      • For a starter kit it's probably OK
      • The cheap tool chests look good online but people complain that they are flimsy. I think this is the same but you should look in store
      • Stanley is not of the same quality as when I was young so the tools are pretty basic quality (as the comments say)
      • But to get all of this for $350 would be good value if you had none of the tools already and weren't using it a lot and don't need high quality
      • Much of Stanley's cheap ass stuff is not the quality it once was … the Fatmax stuff is and when on special a good choice.

    • +22

Everything stanley ive bought from SCA, has been returned for the toolpro equivalent. Toolpro is much better quality.

      • Agree.

      • +2

I've got this Toolpro set and it's been great
        https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/toolpro-toolpro-tool-kit…

      • +3

+1 Modern Stanley is really crap cheap chinese crap. The ToolPro is so much better for the price

        • Totally agree. Just about any company stanley black and decker buys they turn to crap. Sidchrome is a classic example

        • +1

The couple of ToolPro replacement sockets I bought do seem a higher quality than I expected. I bought a combination spanner set and it was highly polished, but were quite thick making them a little clunky to use compared to my very similar Sidchrome set, which gave the impression they knew they needed the extra metal because it needed the extra strength. Haven't had cause to use them much though. Mainly bought them so the kids could have their own set for their bikes.

I used to recommend Kinchrome years ago, then saw a bunch of their socket sets marked way down in a trolley in the Bunnings tool section. I asked the guy why were so they so low and he said China bought them so they were clearing any stock from the previous manufacturer. I rolled my eyes and said I'll have to remember that and find another brand. (I already owned some.) He replied, "Let me show you something." And he pulled the ratchet out of two nearly-identical sets: one from the mark down trolley, and one from the new China set. The China ratchet had something like 40% less metal in the handle (it was thinner), the ratcheting mechanism just felt loose and machined poorly, and there were lots of pits and flaws in the metal surface. He said, "It will still work OK for most people but it's definitely not the quality it was. China buys up brands thinking they'll still sell as many because of the brand recognition, but then they ruin the quality."

I don't know if Kinchrome is still the same or has gotten better again, because I haven't needed more of that type of tool for years after that day of trolley discounts.

@[Deactivated]: When I got my first car (a long time ago) I purchased a Kincrome made in Japan socket set as my dad was picky with his tools. I still have the set to this day and surprisingly never lost a socket. The ratchet click is as good as the day I purchased the set and it's been very well used.

            • @Muzeeb: My only "complaint" is the black plastic handle on one ratchet has a 1.5cm split with a sharp edge on one side. Sometimes it hurts my hand a bit while tightening up a nut. It's my own fault for hurrying and banging a loose nut against the sharp edge of a muffler flange. I know you can buy silicone you can dip tool handles in to coat them. I'll have to research if there's something similar in hard plastic. Then I'll cut the the plastic off first to see what's underneath, because I now think I prefer plain metal handles if they have a nice hand grip. May not even need the plastic dip.

Oh and the clear cover on a socket set has just about had it, lol.

Respectfully that they're made in China is NOT a factor in their quality - as I'd hazard a guess that much of the Tool Pro range is also made in China. Much as many Mercedes Benz, BMWs, Teslas, Applie products etc are.

I'm not wanting to misconstrue your comment but stating the place of origin as an implied indicator of a good's quality is about 20yrs out of date now - atleast with China.

We never hear anyone say American/German/Aussie made crap - though undoubtably there are products from those countries that would fit that descriptor.

And FWIW I'm as Anglo as can be - and agree 100% Stanley products are generally quite low - average, nothing like the quality when they made their rep back in the 80's etc. I think it's as they're positioned as the mid level brand for Stanley Black+Decker.

          • +4

@Daniel Plainview: It's an understandable generalisation as China has been the world's low cost manufacturer for several decades now. Their manufacturing industry is still spread across a wide spectrum (high end - Apple to low end rubbish).

You don't see crap from developed countries because they can't compete on price, only quality or uniqueness

            • +2

@sator: Yes, I completely understand this - but my point remains that it's a dubious way to express this - and honestly creates more harm than good.

My simple point is THAT it came from China is completely inconsequential to the quality of the good. As i said, I would be surprised if the Tool Pro (quality one) wasn't also from there.

Stating it's origin, actually detracts from the rational argument & point that is made - which is it's not a great product - and it's a slippery slope once we start associating origin with quality in such a simplistic manner. e.g there are tens of thousands of products from China that are best in world quality.

As I disagree, there are plenty of poor products from developed countries i.e high labour cost origins e.g sorry but look at many of the last Australian made motor vehicles - and many other examples.

      • Fatmax is the better stuff, have a impact set and it's decent.

    • +1

Pretty sure that's the one I've got.. bought it about 8-10 years ago. It's fine as a starter kit or for occasional use, but as others have mentioned the cabinet is a bit flimsy. The drawers on mine are starting to catch etc. The tools themselves seem ok, just don't expect them to be top quality.

      • As the instructions state, oil the sliders regular!

    • +4

i told myself next tool set I buy is going to be a big cabinet full. tired of all these mismatched sets in separate boxes
      Go for gold

    • +1

I used to have one dont waste your money

    • +1

It’s an $90 tool kit with a flimsy cart. Not comparable to kinchrome or other equivalent lower end quality units. My tool bag weighs about 20 kg… vs this 18kg unit.

Better off buying a bahco case set with a lifetime warranty which takes up less space, has deep 1/4in sockets and a few impact sockets, ratchets and more.

Toolpro usually has a great mechanics set for about $180 with an excellent case lifetime warranty against defects.

Call me crazy but I don’t think these tool chests have lockable wheel castors which is a big no for me.

Buy cheap, buy twice. This is not a bargain. Looks like a cheap $200 bbq with an $80rrp tool kit

    • +1

Bought one of these years ago and it is terrible, flimsy piece of crap, more than half of the pieces are made up of bits so your 133 is really like 50.

As others have said get something ToolPro branded they’re far superior quality.

    • I just have these two (plus some pliers for spring hose clamps / long nosed ones, flare nut bits, some screwdrivers, hose clamps, torque wrench and WD-40 Specialist Automotive Penetrant Spray) and it's sufficient for most jobs:

ToolPRO Automotive Tool Kit 138 Piece

ToolPRO 12V Ultimate Power Tool Kit
      https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/toolpro-toolpro-12v-ulti…

The 3/8" drive impact Ratchet of the tool kit is probably my most used tool of everything.

    • I've found my Stanley socket set to be very reliable, though I've only got experience with one set. I got this socket set maybe 8 years ago and have used it for repairing too many cars to count. Everything from engine swaps, clutch replacements, suspension. Even doing reno work. I've used the sockets with my driver replacing colorbond roofs, bolts for decks etc etc even though their not rated for drivers. I'm not sure on how this gear is, but I'm happy with my set.

      • Stanley have different quality stuff at different price points, the pro and Fatmax stuff is decent, the stuff aimed at the home user is priced as such and is ok for the $

    • I bought both the stanley and toolpro kits when I couldn't decide. Returned the stanley.

How do you know about this deal? Was it an email?

  • Any recommendations for wheel cleaners? I use Meguiar's Ultimate Wheel Cleaner but it seems to only last 3-4 or so washes…

    • +17

      Try Bowden’s Own Wheely Clean

    • +7

Bowdens wheely clean - the shiznit

    • +3

Bilt Hamber auto-wheel, sold at smaller stores, is better than Meguiars and best in class.

I find Meguiars requires multiple passes and a lot of elbow grease with a tyre brush to clean out.

    • SCA works for my matte silver alloys on my civic but not my shiny black alloys on my outlander, weird.

    • Anyone know if anything bad happens if you wax the wheel (avoiding the tyre) or use a ceramic spray?

      • +1

Nothing bad will happen? Same as waxing/ceramic coating anything else. Will keep the wheels cleaner for longer and make it easier to clean.

      • I wax my wheels with Turtle Wax Ice n Shine. Nothing bad happens, and I get shinier wheels that are easier to clean.

        • I spray on Bowdens wet dreams while pressure washing and after rinsed off the wheely clean/orange agent and scrubbed the wheels and tyres.
It's a spray on hose off application.
Nothing bad happens and get a good protection to brake dust and road grime

          • @Spending2Much: Can you use any firm bristle brush from bunnings to scrub tyres with orange agent? For OzB sakes lol

            • +1

@Brodo Faggins: Sure can. On older tyres, probably work better.
I use a softer hand held brush, only cause it's what I have and I keep my new tyres looking smicko on a regular basis, and it's only a touch up.
Use a good tyre shine that lasts and doesn't take much to keep them looking good.

            • @Brodo Faggins: Not a firm bristle brush. Always only a soft brush, cos hard ones cause your tyre to brown. Which we don't want in the first place.

Amazon has a nice wheel clean kit for about $40.

              • @lordra: Isn't the browness from all the dirt that you do want to remove with a stiff bristle? I use the softer brush for my mags, but I need agitation on the tyres. I tried orange agent & soft bristle brush once, then went to dry with microfibre before applying tyre shine, and the microfibre still came out brown (my theory is that the stiffness on rubber would help agitate the dirt more)

      Bowden’s Own Wheely Clean

    • Wheely Clean is great.

    • Don't waste your time with wheely clean. Apart from it stinking which is tolerable, it really doesn't work that well and you have to clean manually to get all the dirt off. Very dissapointed in the product despite all the big reviews.

    • It's $26.99 at Autobarn if you have a store near you: https://autobarn.com.au/ab/Autobarn-Category/Shop-our-Full-R…

      • +1

That's the 500ml version. The 770ml version is $31.99 at SCA.

        • Whoops my bad!

    time for some eufy

    • +3

Same! Gonna get more door sensors if they are in stock and put them in my ute toolboxes. I use MacroDroid to set off an alarm on my phone between 11-5am if the door sensors go off.

    • +1

Dont buy eufy they have to many security problems its insane. You can even erase all the saved vids in your hub from the camera outside. Its trash.

      • Do you have a link on this?

        • Link for which flaw? They have many

          • @ego22: Specifically the vulnerability to deleting videos from a homebase with physical camera access

  • Does sca price jack?

    • Usually only certain items like the toolpro tool chests
Basically goes from the always sale price to a less great sale price. Can't say I've noticed any others really

    • yes, prices are updated every monday, some items go up, some down. Having worked there in the past, usually what goes up, comes on sale a bit further down the line rather than immediately.

    • Yes, they do, this one is priced at $48.99

  • +8

I'd like stuff, but I don't need stuff, nor can I afford stuff.

    • That’s ok. The real problem is when you both would like and also need stuff, but can’t afford stuff.

      • +8

I find the worse problem is when you have stuff but want new stuff and nowhere to put stuff

        • This is a real problem I face many days…

        • +1

I have a 400m² shed and still suffer this problem so don't feel bad.

        • Even worse when you're given big stuff and should be grateful but don't give a stuff because there's sfa room for extra stuff. To wit - a (new) mattress which simply went from one cluttered storage place to another.

        • Shelves are 50% off, you're welcome :)

    • You're stuffed.

  • +1

Some more details in the e-mail I received - online only tomorrow plus in-store and online this weekend, 21-22 January. 20-30% off storewide (some exceptions) + some "selected products" 50%+ off. Discounts are off "regular retail price".

    • recommended retail price*

      • +2

No, wording in SCA's e-mail is "discount is off regular retail price"

        • Right, my apologies Mr Bean.

  • You could buy today and get credit when it goes on sale tomorrow yea?

    • +14

Yeah but you can only use credit at SCA, whereas if you buy at the discounted price you can use the saving anywhere.

      • +4

        Don't say it, don't say it…

        username checks out ;)

        • +3

And you have to use it within 28 days of receiving credit - or it expires. If you can hold off, you're definitely better off waiting a day and buying at the discounted price. You'll also know what the price is then - whereas you don't know what the discounted price will be until tomorrow. Could be 30% off but might be less…..

        • Or just buy it twice and refund one

          • @woahxd: Their store never seems to have more people in it when there's a sale on. So I don't see the point. Just turn up at opening time on the first day will suffice. Unless it's different situation in branches in city areas.

    • +2

You could buy today online/tomorrow in store, get SCA credit for the price difference and claim on 28degrees for a good deal as long at it's not a consumable.

  • Milwaukee products included in this sale?

    • +1

Do they sell Milwaukee? I thought that was Repco.

      • +1

Unless something changed very recently you are correct.

      • +2

You are right. Only REPCO sell Milwaukee products. My bad.

  • +1

Shame it excludes tyres this time… they must have worked out how much I saved last time.

  • Dammit.. just bought a whole stack of service filters / oil etc yesterday… I wonder if the whole 'credit back for on sale items' applies with a sitewide sale 🤔

    • +6

You SHOULD get credit back if you used the club card to buy them, else email them and ask for credit.

  • +2

My trade discount hehe a bit more than this. Even the staff go thats the same as ours:) Respect to supercheap, they wiped american owned Repco near of the map:)

    • +2

you must be purchasing a fair bit if your getting 20-30% plus on trade.

      • Less than you would think:)

  • Do we know if it's 20%….or 30%

Thinking I should have grabbed the big K7 Karcher on boxing day sale with the extra $50 Ebay code.
Now there's a $30 delivery charge as well, as my local doesn't have stock.

    • +11

100% if you take a pram.

    • +1

I really hate that. I wanted to buy something, they didn't have it in stock, but another outlet 36km away did. Then he says we have to pick up something from that branch for our own store tomorrow. I said can you transfer their stock to your store and I buy it from you? Sure. Delivery was $30 too. I said it would only cost me about $12 in fuel for the round trip (petrol was about $1.30/L at the time) and you HAVE TO GO THERE WHETHER I PAY $30 OR NOT. Didn't care. Same $30. Would have nearly doubled the cost of the item so I didn't bother. Figured I'd just wait until it's on sale next time. Can't even remember what it was now, lol. So I probably never bought it.
