Personal Finance Tracker Spread Sheet $6 (Was $8) @ CompiledSanity Personal Finance

3030

Lowe's rate rises haven't done much to stop the inflation on the retirement age, but don't give up on your plans to retire before 90!

This formula driven and automated net worth and savings tool has been really popular on OzBargain and reddit, and hopefully you'll enjoy it too! The sheet is made to help track monthly finances and provides a bird's eye view of your financial position each month. For me, I saw the light on how much I was spending on OXO Good Grips and Victorinox knives every month (not nearly enough).

——
FAQ #1: Why should I pay money for this?
The sheet is heavily automated, has live pricing and is a one-off payment rather than a subscription. If you're really interested, feel free to join the subreddit where I take future feature suggestions (and have for the past three years) and other users can help you debug and get set up.

FAQ #2: What permissions do I need to give and what information will you get off me?
All info is full self-contained, and never leaves the sheet. If you're particularly security conscious, there are 2 versions:
- FULL: Contains the full suite of automated features, but requires a few expansive permissions for them to work.
- SLIM: Doesn't support email updates, calendar reminders or the migration feature, but doesn't require those permissions.

Hope you like it and here's to saving to buy-out Twitter in 2024.

@frowny: It is also mobile only so its a pain in the ass.

            Bring back pocketbook

  • Bought as well based on the positive reviews above.

  • Does this provide real time share (stocks) prices? The ASX provides these details on a 20 minute delay.

    • All quotes have a 20 minute delay. Real-time access is only available as a paid option via ASX unfortunately.

  • or, for a free option, build your own finance tracking application using python and .csv extracts of your bank transactions. It's pretty easy to do

  • I’ve been using this sheet for just over two years and highly recommend. The only issue i have it is showing the incorrect price for vanguard managed funds showing the price as $4000 per unit which skews my networth up heavily. The error occured within the last 6 months. Any fix for it soon?

    • Would love to help with this. Could you PM me the ticker code you’re using so I can debug?

      • same issue as well. Eg "IVV" ended up having a stock split in December but the spreadsheet didn't accomodate for it so the share price is all wrong.

        • +3

Thanks for the heads up. Stock splits do require some manual updates to both the historical purchase amounts and prices to bring your entered purchases in line with the current post-split equivalents.

It should take only a couple of minutes, I had to do it with Apple recently. I’ll add some instructions on the easiest way to manage it.

      • 9146: vanguard high growth

        • +1

Thanks, looking into it. There are some issues with fetching from Morningstar which I’m currently working on resolving in the next patch.

      • Another one here, 4743: vanguard emerging markets shares index fund
Price showing $866 instead of $2

        • +1

          Thanks, looking into it.

  • Can I use it to track International stocks and Mutual funds by any chance ? If so, would definitely buy it !!

    • Yes you can, it will also do live conversion to AUD on international assets.

      • Awesome. Thanks !!

      • Nice work! But doesnt seem to track stocks from SGX or KLSE. Might be something with GoogleFinance.

Question regarding property tab - how do we input a loan for our mortgage which has a fixed / variable component?

    • +1

I have this in my FAQs for a more detailed answer, but essentially you enter in each component as a seperate mortgage according to their outstanding amounts and interest rates.

      • Got it, thanks! Was looking through the getting started guide so it might be helpful to link it to the FAQs in the property section :)

        • +1

Good idea! Will add an update now so it’s all in one place.

  • Purchase based on the positive reviews as well, I had a simple one but for $6 seems like a big upgrade.

Has anybody used this instead of ShareSight for managing stocks?

    • I use both, for different purposes.

Sharesight is hard to beat for shares alone. This is for looking at your total net worth, with shares just being one part of that.

Bought this a few years ago and it got me out of debt and successfully saved +++. Can't recommend this enough.

    • But you had to religiously use it and be very conscious of your spending didn't you? Budgeting is tedious let alone manual budgeting. The automated ones aren't too bad. I'm interested but reluctant to because of the time. What's good? Convert me, sway me over :)

  • Just purchased on back of all the positive reviews! Hoping this helps 😊

    • How long does it take for the spreadsheet to come after paying for it?

      • was only a minute or two for me

  • Thanks, purchased and activated, so many tabs to fill, might be a weekend job

    • Yeah I did a few tabs every day, otherwise I was never going to do it lol.

  • Bought one. Thanks

  • +5

which payment costs you less? PayPal or Credit Card?

    • +1

Sorry, I refer this question to the OP (CSPersonalFinance) - just thinking that with all of us buying so many copies, it might get you a slightly higher profit margin if you let us know whether PayPal or credit card incurs a higher cost etc.

      • +6

Thanks for asking, that’s really considerate of you. Both end up going through PayPal so the cost to me is the same. So whatever is your preference as it all comes through in the same way. Thanks for asking!

I bought this once and never used. If my finances are anything to go by I should look back into it.

  • Bought this in Sep 2021 and been using it since. Highly recommend.

  • Super interested in the spreadsheet, if only had hecs debt repayments included would be great

    • +2

There is a loan section which is pre-filled with a HECS example. So you can definitely use it for that!

      • Thanks just bought it will check it out :)

Like many others, a happy user of this Google Sheets product. A lot of effort has gone into it, and for the price, it's a steal. Happy to support the dev.

If I buy this can both my partner and I update the sheet - we have joint finances so just need one, but can we both access it on our different google accounts ?

    • +1

You can share the sheet to your partner but they won’t be able to submit updates as they will only be authorised under your account. But they will be able to see and edit values.

      • Thanks for the reply. What do you mean by “submit updates”? I don’t know exactly how it works as haven’t bought it yet but main concern is making sure the gf can add income, expenses, and be part of all the monthly process, from her separate google account.

        • +1

So there is a button “Record month” that records your Net Worth at that moment in time and saves it into your history.

As it relies upon some scripts to work (that are only authorised to you), that particular button won’t work for their account. But they will be able to view and update cells such as balances however.

          • @CSPersonalFinance: thanks very much, have bought it & got my invite and made a copy of the full version (AU); look forward to checking this out!

  • Anyone else getting an error a few minutes after starting to input data?

" Your access has expired. Reload this document to gain access. If you still don't have access, contact the document owner. If you leave or reload the page, your unsaved changes may be lost."

    Have purchased and initialised scripts.

    • This sounds like a Google Sheets issue, I’ve seen this in the past when a browser is heavily restricting cookies. Have you tried a different browser/incognito window to see if that makes a difference?

  • Hey so the version I bought a while ago is 2.12, is this newer or does it auto update?

    • The current latest version is v2.12.2. If you have purchased in the past you can use this link to get the latest version.

  • Any easy way of managing conversions for shares? i.e. Buying US shares via Stake.

    • Stake does the conversion for you.. In the annual tax statement

  • is there a support address?
im following the instructions ans have read throufh the FAQ and im getting an error when i try and accept the disclaimer and then i cant proceed further.

    • Sure, send me a PM and I’ll try my best to help you.

  • Bought it now just waiting for it to come through

  • Does this support multiple incomes (partner) and also properties / loan structures as expenses?

  • Can't easily spot this.

Can I import CSV from my bank easily, and does it auto categorising (or any categorising) for spending?

    • @CSPersonalFinance?

    • @CSPersonalFinance

  • Does it send/collect information?

    • +1

Definitely not. Everything is self hosted by you. You can see the FAQ if you would like some more explanation on this.

Thanks. How many of these have you sold in the last 2 years?

  • I use this and it's excellent

  • I'm still using the non-sub version of YNAB, V4 I think.

Any reason I would switch to this, pretty happy with ynab

    • You answered it yourself. But worth a try with $6. If you don’t like this version, op releases new updates regularly so you may try it next time ?

  • +2

Can definitely recommend this. The dev is very responsive whenever I reported bugs/issues (I'm also a dev, but I hate spreadsheets and macros, lol).

Depending on your situation, you may need to use some other tools to make the whole tracking experience easier.

For me, I use this spreadsheet as my overall net worth tracking tool. I also use ShareSight to automatically track all my stocks and ETFs. And every month I look at ShareSight's monthly report to update this spreadsheet - I only update the totals, not the individual transactions, as ShareSight is much more capable for that.

For crypto tracking, I use my own tool (https://github.com/fredwu/yield.rb) to update the numbers (for yield farming the numbers change in real time), then simply copy/paste them into this spreadsheet.

    • Always a pleasure to work with you FW and thanks for your help with the last few betas. It comes through in your feedback that you have some dev experience! Much appreciated.

  • Hi there,

I made a purchase and received an email. When I click on make a copy from the link provided in the email, it states "Sorry, unable to open the file at this time.

Please check the address and try again."

Are you able to help me with this?

    • Sometimes Google Sheets has some issues with initialising with links if multiple accounts are logged in. Could you try again in an incognito window?

  • I was recommended a free net worth and tracking spreadsheet a while ago, but never got around to it. After seeing this post, I though I'd take a look at the one I was recommended and compare to this one.

This one is far far superior, I've just purchased and I'm looking forward to filling out the data!

  • Hi @CSPersonalFinance,
your tracker Spread Sheet was great. However, I cannot track GOLD ETF (GOLD:ASX) from google finance or yahoo finance code on google sheet. Would you please show me how to track GOLD:ASX price for my potfolio? Many thanks

  • Looks good. I just bought a copy and plan to buy another for a friend.

I keep getting this error though. "Exceeded maximum execution time" in the Google Sheet.

Also, I tried personalising the sheet but the options I disabled are still available as sheets at the bottom. Is this normal?

    • This usually means that a prompt/button on the screen hasn’t been clicked, and so the script behind it times out. After what button press are you seeing this?

      • It did eventually work. I did send you an email with a question but I'm yet to receive a response.

        • Thanks I’ve received a lot of queries that I’m working my way through. Reddit is usually my preferred way to provide support as it also benefits others.

I’ll try and get to it soon or questions via the subreddit can also get you an answer a bit sooner.

  • Is there a tool that can be used to calculate how much tax is paid based for investment property, e.g. person 1 income vs person 2 income vs person 3 ?

  • Bought this, cannot get the scripts to run - can't get past "Click to accept disclaimer".

Yeah I dunno if I'm crazy but I just cannot get this to work - and I'm a webdev so not technologically impaired.

    • Sorry to hear this. When you click the button what happens? Are you seeing “Loading” at the top of your screen?

      • I'm seeing loading, yeah.
This morning I am seeing this and this this morning

        • Can you share what the text is behind the error in the first screenshot? It looks like another prompt that is displaying a sheet message.

          • @CSPersonalFinance: I believe it was "sheet personalized successfully" which doesn't seem write if the script timed out.

            • @theguyrules: That will still cause the sheet to tile out ironically! Since it’s all apart of the same process.

Could you click that immediately when it pops up and see how you go?

              • @CSPersonalFinance: I'll give that a go now, just clicked the button

                • @theguyrules: No luck, 6 min later it timed out and the "sheet personalised successfully" pop up never appeared.

                  • @theguyrules: Very weird. Can I ask what browser are you using? And if you try a 2nd/3rd time does the prompt appear?

Just trying to figure out whether it’s a local issue or Google Cloud acting up.

I bought this and I think this spreadsheet looks great, but I found it a bit too complex to set up for my needs. If you have multiple years of share purchases to input it takes too long.

  • I bought this. I'm sure it's really good if you fill it all out correctly.. But I'm honestly not very tech savvy when it comes to spreadsheets. It's a really good complex spreadsheet. I'm really struggling inputting shares. If you have bought multiple parcels of the same share, I input it seperately.. But it takes up so much space and time. I also had trouble figuring out how to add the rows and have the function applied to that row. I keep getting 'loading' under live price.
I'm also unsure how to input if a company has been bought by another share company and how to input those prices and units, etc. Even dividends I wouldn't know how to chase up.
I have a 2nd job and work casually every now and then, so the income from that is very irregular.. I'm assuming it goes under side income.
I feel like I need to sit down with my account to actually fill this out. It's just a little overwhelming for me.. But I'm sure I will enjoy it once I can see the info!

  • Does it track dividend from shares?

Edit, it says it does on the website

  • Ozbargain review are the most trusted review. Just bought but curious to know about cs finance, is this started by an aussie? or people from uk, us collaborated?
