Battery life is extremely variable depending on what you are playing.

      • +3

You can do a surprising amount of optimisation using Steam's quick menu. If you pair that with Decky and install the Power Tools plugin you can really tune the power vs performance ratio. As a tinkerer, this has been the best part about owning the Steam Deck so far.

        • +2

Agreed. Easy to set the TDP per game and limit frame rate to save power.

Decky is essential, it has a convenient mini store of plugins that you access from the quick menu and it keeps them all up to date. Change the look of your device with CSS Loader eg Switch home menu theme, custom boot animation , VibrantDeck to increase saturation gives you an almost OLED look (minus deep blacks) and Powertools like you said are all essential.

The community support this device gets will probably always trump any other handheld PCs so something to consider if you’re looking at the newer ones from ayaneo or GPD. Steam also update it frequently and don’t release dozens of revisions and spec upgrades every few months

      • Not an issue if you have a good power bank

    • Any credit cards doing purchase protection now or is it a grandfathered offer for exisiting 28d holders?

  • +4

    $759 from vchain

    • Got mine from vchain, no issues at all

    • +1

      Looks like $872 to me

    • +1

Got mine for $691 from vchain.
Ordered 6th of jan, arrived 16th of jan. Very happy

      • What charger did you get?

        • +2

The original US steam deck adapter. They included a US to AU adapter.

      • How long did it take for your tracking to go from “ready for processing” via Aus Post to actually moving?

    • Cool, but looks like the price for the 64GB is $872.85
Did you use a code or has the price gone up?

  • +4

You can get the gpd win 4 for the same price of the 512gb model. If you're going to be grey importing anyways, perhaps gives that a look. It's smaller, comes with a keyboard, better ergonomics due to slide up screen, and more premium parts.

And if you want an entry device, aya just started teasing their aya neo air plus, which, they said is supposedly 280usd only.

    • +2

The only reason to buy from kogan is for the consumer protection as it’s an aus business

      • +13

Kogan and consumer protection generally arent used in the same sentence

    • +1

I also backed GPD WIN 4, but in all honesty, deck offers better console experience. Sleep mode alone is worth it.

      • +6

And it's constantly updated. On the preview branch its getting updates every 2-3 days except over the holidays.

There's also the fact Steam stated recently that the next version won't be more powerful, it'll instead have improvements to things like screen or battery life but target the same performance. So you won't be left with the outdated model like you are when you buy Ayaneo devices which come out every 6 months for $2K+

      • Sleep mode was biggest seller for me. Not as snappy as switch but it’s there

      • I won't doubt it, and steam os is way better than big picture mode as well. Even if windows is trying to catch up with suspend, it isn't there yet.

That being said, the win 4 is better in many ways as well. Having full pc game compatibility, for example.

    • +1

      more premium lol

    • +2

I recently got the AYANEO 2. Great device so far and other devices with the 6800U like the GPD Win 4 like you mentioned also look great.

I was just done waiting for Valve to give an official way to buy the Deck but to be honest I like the design of the AYANEO 2 more since I'm a fan of smaller bezels.

      • +2

Same, I have the Ayaneo 2 and love it. The build quality and design feels soooooo much more premium and the colour reproduction and deep blacks of the IPS had me convinced that it was an OLED and not an LCD. Seriously, i never thought an IPS display could look this good. Plus I'm getting as much as 50% better performance in games than the Steam Deck. Ayaneo are also constantly release updates with the latest one being the SmartTDP feature which has improved battery life for my by an hour at least.

Sleep mode is hit or miss but that's offset by the fact that i have access to my entire PC game library.

  • Pretty reasonable pricing. Just going through the exercise of having a friend send a 64GB model from the US. Currently with AusPost, if I get charged GST then it will be more than the $797 here.

  • I remember reading something about steam decks being region locked. Meaning my existing library would not work . I would have to set up a new us account . Does anyone know if this is true

    • +9

      No

Source I have a kogan sd and an aus account

    • +2

Mine works fine. Region locked is a lie!

    • Hehe, I remember reading this exact same thing from somewhere too. Glad someone asked, that's a load off.

    • +4

      stop reading Kotaku :)

      • +3

My god, kotaku has gone downhill so badly over the past few years.

    • +2

I heard the same thing but that was in reference to buy the steam deck as you need a us account to purchase from value directly. You can use any steam account on the deck ;)

  • How do the controls compare to a steam controller?

    • D pad is in a weird spot but I haven’t played anything where I’ve used that yet and I don’t know where else you would put it. Track pads work great in my opinion and I really like the haptic feedback they have. I like the triggers but they don’t feel as nice as an Xbox elite controller.

I have big hands too and it fits them well

  • +1

Patiently waiting for ebgames to start selling the SD.

    • +2

It took them such a long time to sell the Valve Index. I wish they were more on the ball

      • I suspect that's more up to Valve than EB…

  • +9

Just a heads up guys, the dispatch date that Kogan.com themselves have given is misleading here - they have yet to update the web page, but I received an email that my 64GB model would be delayed and that it would actually be sent on or before the 22nd of February. I've heard similar reports - some with delays as far back as March - with the 256GB and 512GB models. The funniest part about this is that Kogan sent me an expired eVoucher which does not work to apologise for the delay.

To be clear, this is with the official Kogan.com listing. I've personally cancelled my order and given Vchain a go - I understand Kogan will probably be easier to chase up for things like warranty, but at the price difference and wait time (I'm able to grab the 256GB model for only another $9 up on what I originally ordered the 64GB at), I've decided to jump ship and give another seller a go. I believe there are a couple other vendors undercutting Kogan themselves on all the different models.

    • +1

Ordered the Vchain 64gb model last night and just recieved an email to say it's been dispatched. I dont know if its shipped from a warehouse in Australia, doubt it!

      • That’s reassuring to hear, hopefully mine won’t be too far behind then. Just frustrating that they have still yet to update the page, likely in order to draw in more sales

  • Worth paying double the price for this over the switch oled?

    • +19

      Apples and Dragonfruits

    • +6

Bit of an apples to oranges comparison in this case IMO. Consider this as a gaming laptop in a handheld form, and the types of games you want to play (e.g., Nintendo Switch exclusives).

If you're talking purely from a $$$ perspective, consider how big your Steam library is, and if you consider the savings from Steam sales versus overpriced digital Switch purchases in the long run worth it. The hardware is definitely beefier on the Deck, but again, it's built to run games optimised for PCs, so it doesn't really feel like a fair comparison. If you want to save more money, wait for the official launch, which will definitely be lower than what these imports are running at.

      • +9

Getting to dodge the Switch tax is so big. Buying indies for $5-$10 instead of $30 is huge in the long-run.

        • +1

          I feel personally attacked

    • +4

The switch OLED is very underwhelming. Playing the new Pokémon game it CHUGS along and can’t keep up rendering textures and constant frame rate drops.

The SD can play God of War (2018)

    • The two aren’t competing products

      • it is if u emulate

    • +1

You're kidding right? One is a switch and one is an actual handheld PC.

    • -1

you cant ask random people to make the decision for you

      • +3

You have convinced me, random person

      • +3

        I absolutely can

Care to help? I'd love your opinion, Freestyle https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/754436

And if random people can't make decisions for me, then why can a random person tell me what I can and can't do?

        • ok go waste $5000 in a bar because OzB told you so

    • +2

Given you can play Nintendo games on it through emulation , definitely

      • Bar the Switch, I have every Nintendo game ever made loaded on my SD card on the Steam Deck and running great via Emudeck.

Switch emulators will get better over the next year and wouldn’t be surprised if we’re seeing most games running better via emulation on the deck than actual Nintendo hardware, with the bonus of upping resolution 2x and add 60fps mods/cheats to some games if they can support it.

I actually prefer playing most Nintendo handheld games on original hardware though. Emulation will never replace the experience of using a DS or 3DS imo.

        • Well, the DS line is just so uniquely fun and gimmicky. I'm still mad at the store being closed, those devices should be immortalised. If they're willing to upkeep the download server, the store front shouldn't cost them much more to upkeep as well.

    • As always, it depends on what you want to play more than anything else.

If you interested in switch games, get a switch. If you want to play everything else, get this

    • +4

The Xbox doesn't run a general purpose OS and isn't portable

      • It kinda runs a general purpose OS as it is a cut down version of windows… But yeah I also agree unless you got a really long extension cord an xbox is not portable and is not comparable.

    • +3

This is like saying why buy a Ferrari, a fighter jet is much faster.

64gb appears to be cheaper on eBay for Plus members - $744.48 delivered using code: FEB202312

in stock for immediate delivery. stack with discounted gift cards + cashback (unsure if it’ll track due to promo code usage)

    • +1

^Six 64 GB units sold so far after this real-deal comment!

      • also six upvotes !

They seem to have stocked 10 units for each size in this inventory batch - four 64GB units left now - low quantity time

    • also available at expansys australia for $694.99 + shipping (from $20) - total $714.99 for me

however, not in stock and only ordered on request

    • I'm seeing $762 with the code, price go up?

    • Ordered one last night at 7:30PM but hasn't got confirmation yet. Anyone got any updates?

      • Ordered one last night at 7:30PM but hasn't got confirmation yet. Anyone got any updates?

I ordered a 64GB this morning and got a shipping notification an hour later with tracking number.

I'm seeing $762 with the code, price go up?

Yeah, it went out of stock last night and came back in stock this morning with a slightly higher price.

      • I ordered about an hour after you, and received tracking this afternoon with estimated delivery for tomorrow.

        • Thanks, I got the tracking after posting it here, estimate delivery for tomorrow too🤞

          • @hattori9x: Mine's changed to Monday. :(

This is everything it's cracked up to be. True innovation.

    • can you explain what is innovative about it?

      • +1

It’s a pocket rocket of an all in one package for playing games previously only available with an actual laptop or pc? Capabale of running even RDR2 and GOW ?

      • It's essentially a handheld PC capable of playing an endless (but not everything) amount of games that aren't even supposed to run on Linux (though you can run Windows if you want to). Sure, you need to temper your expectations depending on the age and how demanding the game is, but factor in the low price point (especially compared to other handheld gaming devices of a similar ilk) and it truly is impressive.

Wherever you may be, If there's a game you really want to play, you'll likely (again though, not always) be able to play it in some way, shape, or form.

        • oh so it runs on the steamOS thing they talked about for ages, and felt like it got abandoned? i was waiting for a steam machine, and in the end just used picture mode on my little windows pc and plug it into the TV in the lounge.

          • @alamodey: It does, but that's a good thing because its been vastly improved and refined and personally I wouldn't use another OS.

If you update Steam on your PC today and a activate Big Picture, you'll get a glimpse of what Steam looks like on the Deck.

            • @Jamedog: i heard about the update yesterday but last night it still looked like the old big picture.

looking forward to seeing what steamOS 3.0 is like on PC. maybe it'll be time to get rid of windows for good.

  • Decisions…. this or the Ayaneo 2. I am well aware of both platform's benefits and drawback.

    • +2

As you are already well aware and have the info at your disposal

here we go with a decision

      +1 Get this

      • Isn't that SD vs Switch?

  • +1

$700 would be my buy now price

  • -1

Can anyone tell me the appeal of the Steam Deck versus a GPD WIN 4? Steam Deck seems late to the portable PC party and underwhelming. I wouldn't want to be locked out of using a Windows OS and being limited to a handful of games that require updating to become playable.

I have the GPD WIN 2 and it was amazing for its time. The WIN 4 looks really impressive and can play all Steam Deck games + Epic Store + GOG + Xbox etc.

    • +3

It really sounds like you should just get the win 4 then If you’re out for a new shiny gadget

My other pick woulda been aya neo 2 but went sd because of the support, ease of getting parts, the community behind it, the suspend feature and ultimately I’ll be claiming every major price drop with 28d for next 11 months anyway

I also coulda been an owner of a win max 2 but idk I just didn’t really want to depend on gpd in the event of a fault.

      • Ahhh 28D PP. I forgot about that.

Thanks for giving me an opinion instead of whoever negged me.

      • I didn't think the 28d price protection was a thing anymore. I must look into this !

        • If you didn’t sign up for it back in the day its too late

    • +1

The win 4 is the more premium pc, but the deck is the better platform. You can be sure that the deck will be supported and repairable for a long time, and are striving to be closer to a console than it is a pc. Small things like sleep to resume is a huge improvement in the platform. Plus, the deck comes with touchpads as well, making it much better device for playing fps than the alternatives.

The win 4 is definitely more powerful and are more technically impressive though, that's for sure.

    • I know someone up above says you can get a 512gb steam deck for the same price as a GPD WIN 4, but I don think that's true. The GPD WIN4 is USD1,000 (although I saw a review mention USD800, but I didn't see that price on the website). The 64gb steam deck + a 1 tb nvme is like USD500. It's realistically half the price but is unlikely to be half the performance.

Also, their indiegogo seems to indicate they will start shipping properly in April.

I think it'll also likely have worse battery life. While the 6800u is a more powerful chip, apparently it doesn't perform better at the same TDP as the deck, it only really performs better if you open it up. But this doesn't matter to everyone.

I think personally, I'm looking at the steam deck as an entry point into this market. It'll probably expand the market overall, and I may look at a more premium option in a year if valve haven't done one. I wonder if they will hit enough volume that devs start really targeting it as a platform, because then it really will become something interesting.

So I think the answer to your question in order of importance is 1) price, 2) availability, 3) probably awareness, and 4) specific features that push people one way or another.

      • it was 800 usd a day ago. kicking myself for not buying it

  • Couple of things. I ordered one back on Jan 25. Got an email a week later saying it won't ship until Feb 22. The Feb 3 ship date is a total furphy.

They also won't refund me the price difference between what I paid $999 and this price.

So if I don't get any joy tomorrow I'll be cancelling the order and reordering it at the lower price. Their customer service hasn't been all that great if I'm being brutally honest.

    • So did yours ship yet? The op of the other thread was given the difference in store credit when there was a minor price drop before their unit shipped

  • +2

Got the 64GB early last year from overseas and upgraded it with a 1TB internal SSD + 1TB SD card. I would not personally be purchasing the 512GB model for that much more.

  • FYI Catch $806 for 64gb atm + student bean discount
