Other than lights and lamps, what would you use this for?

    • +3

      Great for pool pump scheduling

    • Dumb fans, smart ones you pretty much have to use an IR blaster.

      • Actually, unfortunately most fans dont use IR but RF :(

        • +1

          Broadlink RM Pro

        • You can get RF controllers - I personally use the Broadlink RM4 Pro (does IR and RF).

I haven't got the RF working with Home Assistant yet - but I suspect that's more an issue with my particular device not broadcasting the RF code long enough.

Heaters. Humidifiers. Fans. Cameras. Christmas Tree LEDs. Aquarium gear.

I had my Christmas Tree LEDs on one this year. It was fun using Siri to control the Tree.

Last winter I had a little Oil Filled Radiator Heater plugged into one. Switched itself on before bedtime if I was home and the BOM forecast was <15° overnight. Obviously was very careful to keep the area around it clear.

I haven’t personally, but some other uses I’ve seen:
      • used with indoor IP cameras keep them completely powered down when they are at home
      • The non-HomeKit ones have Energy Monitoring. Some people use that to track energy use of fridges, PCs, heaters, etc.
      • Some have used Energy Monitoring to spot when appliances stop their cycle, so they get alerts to empty the dishwasher or the laundry washing machine.

Use it on my aquarium to turn on and off the tank lights and bubbler as well as lamps. Although I have Tuya enabled ones very similar to these.

Power meter for aircon. (if it has a plug)
      Reticulation pump scheduling.

    • Stopping kids watching TV in the morning..

    When is the

    Meross "Matter" Smart Wi-Fi Plug

    coming to Australia?

  • +1

Thanks, they got some good reviews so brought 4 packs to give it a shot.

    • Did you receive them? do they connect with the Google Home Assistant? I was considering getting an electrician to come and do and audit of our power usage? but I am keen to know if it works and if it did help you identify power costs.

  • appears to work with home assisant, thanks got 4

  • not as cheap, but ikea's ones are amazing

    • +1

      Didn't know they did them.

      What's the product name?

      • +1

        TRÅDFRI Wireless control outlet

    • +1

They don’t have energy monitoring though - which might be important.. you can tell when there’s a load active or measure your usage

      • That's true, but if you don't need energy monitoring they are really good

    • Please note that the $20 TRÅDFRI Wireless control outlet requires a $99 DIRIGERA Hub or a $39 TRÅDFRI Gateway (sale price for run-out model using 'older technology').

The Meross smart plugs don't require a hub.
I must admit, a smart plug is a smart plug (I have both the Ikea and the Meross). I'd be interested to know how you find the Ikea ones "amazing."
Do you mean the convenience factor of having a smart plug?
They are narrower, but as per my comment above, this doesn't make much of a difference for me: https://imgur.com/a/XJU09su

They use zigbee vs wifi, zigbee is great if you already have a network made with zigbee2mqtt or zha, or a hub, they are completely offline (no entry point into your network when they eventually get hacked), and they are very quick to respond and very stable. Every smart home should be using zigbee or zwave devices unless completely necessary. Having smart home devices connected to a private wifi network is really bad practice as its only a matter of time till the Chinese app you use to interface with them gets hacked, and all your smart home devices turn into a botnet :)

also if you want a proper smart home setup, use homeassistant with a sonoff zigbee dongle with zigbee2mqtt. super cheap setup, super reliable.

  • Thanks Op ordered 4pk

These are great for converting your dual outlet power points into single outlet

  • There description states that you can set them for scheduling (turn on and off and set times). Can anyone assist with telling me how? I’ve checked every rabbit hole in setting and read the manual and have no idea.

I only have the Meross app for the garage door opener on iOS, but I have a menu item “Smart” and within that page there’s two buttons at the top. “Routines” is one of them, select that and then the plus icon to create a new routine, which allows scheduling.

      • Thanks heap bojan. I knew it had to be there and easy, but I couldn’t find it.

    • +1

I initially used Meross app for scheduling. Then I moved onto Google Home for scheduling.
Google Home Routines scheduling works very well and can be remotely controlled.

  • Correct me if I’m wrong; but the HomeKit one do NOT have power meter function

    • Yes you are correct. Only non homekit ones have that which is a real shame

      • +1

Homekit bridge is easy at least

  • I prefer the toppersun or the bigw ones but then again i dont intergrate just use tuya app.

    • +1

The Eko brand one from big W has been serving me quite well, and at $16 ish was about the same price for retail stock.

Pity there's no way to export the data from the Tuya app but it only takes 5 minutes a month to copy the kWh figures by hand

      • Spot on yeah that is a real shame

        • +1

Eh, it's a small price to pay (literally).

My previous plugin monitor was about $50 and didn't have any daily logging whatsoever, so if you wanted usable data you'd have to remember to check and record every single day. Certainly didn't have wifi nor a switching relay.

    • +2

Cygnett half price ($17.45) but limited availability at Big W. The fact that it's a discontinued line may not be a good sign.

  • Just bought these a week ago for 62. Anybody knows if Amazon can do anything about that?

    • +1

Ask for price difference, they will most likely give you a gift card

  • Isn't this the big ass one that blocked the second power point next to it?

    • Yes

  • I bought a pair of these a while ago. I have one on the powerboard that has my 3d printers and hobby stuff. The other one hasn't been put in use yet.

They are darn useful. The power monitoring function is especially good if someone pays me to print them something so I can incorporate that into what I charge them.

  • Anyone had tested how accurate are those smart plug? I am monitoring my power usage of bar fridge, the app showing daily usage below 0.5 kwh.
