      • aren't OLED are darker due to no backlight so might be more straining on the eyes for daily pc usage?

so it is great for movie watching but not great for pc task e.g. web browsing, office work etc.

        • +2

aren't OLED are darker due to no backlight so might be more straining on the eyes for daily pc usage?

No, because if you find it too bright you can just turn the brightness down.

A blacker background means better contrast which means white text on a black background is easier to see as it stands out more clearly, which would be less straining on your eyes.

Imagine writing some text on a sheet of glass with a black pen. It would be easier to read the text if you put the glass on a white surface than if you put it on a grey surface.

          • @eug: I am referring to it in sense of people finding OLED not bright enough which causes the eye strain.

many people are buying monitor lights etc to increase the brightness for normal LED monitors

Also from what I heard/seen, darker OLED means not so great for using in a dark room at night etc.
is that the case or not?

            • +3

              @pinkybrain:

I am referring to it in sense of people finding OLED not bright enough which causes the eye strain.

Have people been saying OLED monitors aren't bright enough?

many people are buying monitor lights etc to increase the brightness for normal LED monitors

How does a monitor light bar increase the brightness of a monitor?

Also from what I heard/seen, darker OLED means not so great for using in a dark room at night etc. is that the case or not?

No. OLED is ideal in dark rooms at night because dark areas of the screen will look dark as they should be, and not murky white.

        • +1

Thats personal preference, because the 'darker' part is only whats meant to be black.
          So font, and such.

It's been WELL proven that 'dark mode' on things causes faster fatigue (assuming it's day time, so you're adjusted to daylight).
Similar to above, it just 'feels nicer' on things you use sporadically (like your phone) because it's a 'break' from the bright world.

PC screens should never be 'dark mode' if you're avoiding fatigue. Lets not forget we (humans, using IT) STARTED on white font on black background, and moved away for a reason.

          • @MasterScythe: never mention dark mode or going darker

was referring to OLED being not as bright as LED due to no backlight

this video mentioning about using ambient light for better eye comfort while using OLED at night
            https://youtu.be/QqVwlMmL4mw?t=246

other issue is image retention etc

also other issues is these big screens means you would not want fullscreen web browser or white background app in fullscreen mode
so you would be using them in smaller size and in different zones most of the time.

it also means gaming (fullscreen) while multitasking with web browsing would be a no go
so you can't do certain multitasking things like that..
since this monitor would take up most of the the desk (no mult monitor option)

            • @pinkybrain: His example is 48"; 6 inches diagonally is quite a jump more.

This is only 42", with a deep desk, there's no issues with using the web browser or anything full screen.
It takes a little adjustment, but it's extremely usable. I sit 75cm away from my 42" 16:9 monitor at work.

Something more people will have experience with; consider that 32" 16:9 dedicated monitors are still perfectly comfortable at standard close up 'monitor distance', after all.

              • @MasterScythe: so you only can fit this one 42" monitor on your desk?
would be good to see a pic of your desk setup

that means no more Fullscreen gaming while web browsing/youtube/discord or whatever, right?

does it also mean you are using the browser and other apps in fancy zone like he did in the videos?

no doubt 42" does have it uses
ie alot of windows/apps all on one screen instead of on 2 or 3 monitors
but does mean you can't do certain things anymore like full screening gaming + multitasking (web/youtube/discord etc)

also most apps will never go fullscreen and will be in a fancy zone area

                the pros though are

-big screen for gaming in full screen only
-and watching movies in full screen with excellent picture quality

                • +2

                  @pinkybrain:

but does mean you can't do certain things anymore like full screening gaming + multitasking (web/youtube/discord etc)

Gaming yes, but for all the others, if you think about it, Fancy Zones lets you make virtual screens on your large monitor. i.e. you can maximize an app into a zone the size of a full 32" monitor.

also most apps will never go fullscreen and will be in a fancy zone area

All apps will go fullscreen if you maximize them just like any other monitor. Fancy Zones only takes effect when you hold down the shift key.

was referring to OLED being not as bright as LED due to no backlight
this video mentioning about using ambient light for better eye comfort while using OLED at night

He never said he uses bias lighting because it's an OLED monitor. Bias lighting is used to make the perceived brightness of a monitor dimmer. It has nothing to do with OLED vs LCD; it is used with both types of monitors and TVs.

                • @pinkybrain:

so you only can fit this one 42" monitor on your desk?

I could fit more if I wanted to.

that means no more Fullscreen gaming while web browsing/youtube/discord or whatever, right?

I play shooters, RTS and MOBA, so there's no time for any of that if I'm gaming.
I have a pair of 24" monitors above; they mostly monitor server statistics though.

does it also mean you are using the browser and other apps in fancy zone like he did in the videos?

Nope, full screen is fine at 200% scaling.

but does mean you can't do certain things anymore like full screening gaming + multitasking (web/youtube/discord etc)

I have the 2X 24's, but they usually just monitor stats.
If I'm gaming, I'm not working, and vice versa, so I've never needed to multitask during gaming time.

If I really needed to though, I own a tablet, a smartphone, and a laptop.

                  • @MasterScythe: can you share pic of your desk and monitor setup..

is your desk standard size that can fit 2 x 24 monitors etc..

yeah if you putting the 2x 24 above then sure that could work
but would not be good for ergonomics (neck strain)

I was referring to put the the 2x24" on both side of the 42" which would not fit on most people's desk.
which would be better for multitasking and ergonomics (ie like 3 x 24") but this would not be possible since the 42" is too big.

What stats and stuff is on the 2 x 24" above the 42"?

                    • @pinkybrain:

What stats and stuff is on the 2 x 24" above the 42"?

AWS load, server uptime\patch status, threat analaysis, route load.

                      • @MasterScythe: so those monitors are more functioning as stats/status monitors
rather than multi monitor usage purpose like 3x24 monitors (e.g. youtube +browser+ discord on each monitor etc)
since you don't want to be moving your head up and down that much for the 2x24 stack above the main 42" one (which would not be very ergonomic)

that would be quite a waste of electricity for just display stats all the time on 2x24 monitor
which quite different to 3x24" which is actually being used for multitasking (youtube +browser+ discord or whatever etc)

can you share pic of your desk setup?

  • Stop making me want 1

    • What you really want is 2. You can game on one while watching your stream chat, OBS, or a video on the other.

  • +1

Jesus that’s great price. Paid nearly this much for the dell G3223Q. Kinda regretting not waiting…

    • +1

I have a c1 48 inch and a g3223q both have pros and cons when using it as a monitor.

C1 better for media video playback
Dell better for productivity, working, web browsing.
C1 better for gaming in the dark.
Dell better for gaming in a bright room. It gets much brighter.
Dell has 144hz and has a faster response time overall I can personally feel it ,better for competitive gaming.
C1 is better for dark games with bright HDR highlights games like the new resident evil 4.

  • +4

Had been holding out with a limit set at sub $1000!

    Purchased, thanks OP.

  • +1

    must, resist

  • thanks BG!

  • +1

Is anyone planning on using this as their main pc monitor? How do you think you will set it up in terms of desk, distance etc?

    • "4K 120Hz 4:4:4 RGB @ 12 bits per component"

I reckon it would be pretty good, I have a massive monitor in front of me, and tbh it's probably too big, but then 50"+ is really too big, 34-42" is ok for a monitor.

    • +1

Pretty sure everyone in here is eyeing this as a monitor

    • +1

I've had mine for 6 months as my main monitor. I probably sit a meter away, and I have no issues in terms of eye strain or fatigue. I upgraded from a 34" ultrawide, and to me it's very similar, but with more vertical space.

If you have the room on your desk I say go for it. I have no regrets and would buy again in a heartbeat, even more so at this price.

    • This has been my gaming monitor for the last 6 months, hasn't been without issue
It doesn't like full white background on webpages so it dulls them
There are a few things you need to tweak or turn off like the TV menu.
Waking up from power save requires extra software

But in game nothing beats it and it is amazing how fast you start to consider a 42 inch monitor as normal!

  • Damn OLED is cheap now. Maybe with Samsung finally entering the ring, LG has decided to start cutting prices.

  • +3

I CAN ONLY HODL FOR SO LONG

    • +1

I’m still HODL strong, waiting for the 65” to hit the sweet mark

      • What price is that you're looking for?

I find that It seems when the prices drop is when stock is impossible to find. Like the c1 deals. But then the next gen is more expensive, so the previous gen value holds and the price drops aren't that big as before.

        • I’m waiting for below $2k before stacking with gift cards

  • +1

EBay Plus is lacklustre especially when compared to Prime. But times like these it makes me want to renew…

    • +2

I've found eBay Plus to be worth it lately, I've been wheeling & dealing electronics, saved maybe $50, which amounts the to cost I didn't pay, cause I think I got Plus on a deal, but over a year maybe save $100+

It really depends on what you're buying.

But remember Jack, he's always there, ready to ruin the party.

    • +1

If you missed out on the deals where you could get a year for next to nothing, could always sign up for a month for $4.99 (or free trial) if you just wanna grab a deal like this.

  • +2

My bank account said no to me.

    • +1

Credit card call me maybe though.

      • Worth trying

  • +1

I am intending to buy the 55 when it is down to this price. Old buddy LCD LG is still surviving since 2017.

    • +1

2018 49" LG LCD checking in.

      • :)

      • +3

That's not even old, I sure would be disappointed if my 5 year old TV wasn't working anymore

        • +1

My one is kinda blue now, best tv for watching bluey.

        • Oh it still works fantastically, I just want an OLED ha ha

    • +1

2009 LG LCD still going strong, sadly.

      • You can donate it to Op-Shop

    • +2

I agree, it should be at 55" for this price already

  • Amazing

  • +1

    Must… Resist… Temptation…

  • +1

I resisted the previous deals and got downvoted, look who is laughing now!

    Anyways I bought, rip wallet

  • Kapten! I cannot hodor anymore!

Question: Is this compatible with an Omnidesk Pro?

    • if your desk has HDMI out then yes. You'll want HDMI 2.1 to make the most of it.

  • +4

    damn these prices just tumblin.

If the RBA added oleds to their basket of goods inflation numbers would be right down :p

    • Consumer electronics are in it.

  • This or the 38 inch ultrawide for gaming and general Pc usage?

    • +1

      yes

    • +1

you can use the 42 as an ultrawide by changing the resolution to 3860x1600 and it's basically a 38" ultrawide at that point.

    • Price difference wise this is way better imo

  • If all I do is work on the computer - emails, spreadsheet , websites etc then is this a good option as a monitor? I have a 32" Dell ultrawide atm

    • This is more for people who game or watch media

      • I am very productive on this. 70% work, 30% media & games. Using dark profiles everywhere (I also prefer it) and had to adjust a few things but my eyes say thank you. The only bummer is that it is gloss so reflections…

      • I would have thought for productivity too as you can open multiple windows on it simultaneously without having to shrink them too much

    • Definitely not

    • If all I do is work on the computer - emails, spreadsheet , websites etc then is this a good option as a monitor? I have a 32" Dell ultrawide atm

IMHO, yes and no. I've never been a big fan of the ultrawides for work as I find them too short. It's typically easier to read things top-to-bottom rather than left-to-right (i.e. reading text on an A4 sheet is easier in portrait than landscape), so when you're reading or working on a document, height is more useful than width. It's most obvious when you maximise a website in a browser - the left and right parts of the screen is wasted and you're

Some people put two or three documents side by side on an ultrawide which is probably how they're meant to be used, but a 34" ultrawide feels too short for that. A 34" ultrawide has the same screen height as a 27" monitor and is only 1.35x wider. A 42" 16:9 is 1.16x wider than your 34" ultrawide and 1.55x taller. That's a fair bit more height to fit documents into.

You can use Microsoft's free FancyZones utility to split up a big monitor into smaller zones to make it easier to organise your windows.

The "no" part relates to having to worry about burn-in.

      • Pop!OS was made for monitors like this. Built-in automated windows management.

But Linux is not for everyone (I assume?). I made the switch 3 years ago and miss nothing about the Microsoft experience.

        • +1

But Linux is not for everyone (I assume?).

Yes. It is very impractical for many people.

        • Can you get that automated windows management on vanilla Debian?

          • +2

@bleeder: The automated window management feature in Pop!_OS is called Pop Shell. Pop Shell provides a set of keyboard shortcuts and window tiling functionality to help users manage windows more efficiently. It allows users to quickly organize and resize windows using keyboard shortcuts, and also includes a tiling feature that automatically arranges windows on the screen.

Pop Shell is designed specifically for Pop!_OS, and while it may be possible to install it on Debian, it may not work as well or may require additional configuration. Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu, which in turn is based on Debian, so the two operating systems are similar in many ways. However, there are still differences between them, especially when it comes to the default software packages and configurations.

If you are interested in using window management on Debian, there are other window managers and desktop environments that offer similar functionality to Pop Shell. Some popular options include i3, Awesome, and Xfce. Each of these has its own set of keyboard shortcuts and window management features that can be customized to suit your preferences.

    • +5

I genuinely can't see how its going to get cheaper unless they don't sell out.

Even the 48" gigabyte oled had a 1K price floor that it didn't go below despite surplus stock.

      • is the 48" an ultrawide or similar to this?

for most people 48" would probably be too big to sit at 1m
though people who probably get used to it over time.

        • no same as this and feel your assessment is spot on. 48" is too big for most people but you can get use to it but I'm not sure its ideal (based on expereience with 48" and there are plenty of reddit who used the 48" in the past but the 42" has quickly proven more popular.

42" is spot on imo and if you want more space just add 24" monitors in portrait mode. I've got more desk space and more screen space now than I did having a 49" UW.

  • +5

Not sure if I should thank OP or kick em in the goolies.

    • thank the OP
and kick yourself in the goolies

  • +1

This or their OLED monitor with probably worse picture quality and nearly double the cost? /s

    • how you know worst picture quality?

monitors tend to be sharper for text/web browsing than TV which is more for TV watching.

  • I have a Dell U3219Q, bought for $1300 or so, and thought I would settle with it for a long time. But seeing the C2 42” getting cheaper and cheaper every day is really hard to resist. My only ‘concern’ now is it may be too big for me and my setup (At 55cm I can see every corner of the 32” at the same time but would have to move my eyes if not my neck for the 42” to see it from corner to corner).

    • +7

      buy now think later

    • +1

I use a 42" C2 side by side with a UP3216Q, older than yours but the calibrated premiercolor model. The oled absolutely kills it and it is so disappointing looking at the Dell now. Id suggest getting a monitor arm which will let you mount the 42 further back.

  • which discounted gift cards please ?

      This

Buy that, redeeming it either on ShopBack or find eBay gift cards at Coles to use it against

Seriously. Holy moly. Fab price. Cheers OP

  • Have a $250 GG GC to use , soooooo tempting but do not need .

  • Oh man, this would pair nicely with my new Mac mini….so tempting.

  • These prices are out of control! I've got a 65" C1 but very tempted to upgrade…

    • +2

      65" to 42" is a downgrade?

      • I don't mean this exact screen size. I meant the prices of LG TVs in general recently
