  • When I see the spec, my head goes the HDD working buzz noise. I cannot unhear this.

    • it's called swapping it for a SSD

  • How would the power consumption be when I run Home Assistant with this?

Wanted to get RPI 4 8GB, but the stock is not back yet :/

    • +3

This isn't a T model CPU and is less efficient generally as a platform I'd say. If you replace the HDD with an SSD you'll shave some watts.

I'd probably wait for the next ~120 dollar 6th gen mini pc instead.

Like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/744420 or similar Lenovo or Dell

      • Thanks for the input

Yeah, just remembered that 4th gen is DDR3, not DDR4. Not a big deal, but still a meh :p

Should prolly wait for 6th gen as you said

        • been using this machine daily for the last few years, there is no real life difference between 4590 and 6500 - 4590 is a bit less common, most machines have actually 4570, for $85 the price is very good, however definitely needs an SSD, after that the 8GB might become the next limiting factor and the price of another 8gb of even second hand of RAM is a bit expensive IMHO. Again $85 is a steal, think how much would you pay just for legal windows :)

@stefanko: For the specific purpose of MrSachi's use, the newer model makes a touch more sense if it's more efficient. Was less about raw performance. The T models sip less power than the non-T variants.

For a general office/use machine for sure 4th gen is just as fast (in real world use), but factor in SSD cost too etc. Also size, these SSF units are kinda chunky compared to the micro machines.

            • @ReaperX22: As far as I know, the T (TDP throttle) variants only available on the MFF machines which is extremely compact and has an external power supply adapter. The fan can be very noisy. I have 6th and 12th gen MFF they both screaming loud during summer when I do heavy encoding. It's very silent when I am doing normal work. I love them.

The non-T variants housed in Small Form Factor has a full size fan, built in power supply. It will also fit two 3.5" HDD with a few simple mods. So this unit is very nice for home NAS with some apps like plex or home assist.

      • What does everyone use for storage on a setup like this? My PC is five years old, still running okay, but it's at a pensionable age now. It has a 1TB HDD, which I love.

        • +1

Buy a cheap 500GB/1TB SSD for OS and relegate the HDD to the second storage duties. You can thank me later!

          • @Solrak: no, thanks.

            • +1

@craving: So you would run your OS off a HDD in 2023? You must have a lot of time to kill or are too tight not to spend $20-$60 on an SSD upgrade… Some people!

For Home Assistant use, why not J4125/N5105/J5005?

They are cheaper than RPI 4 and more reliable.

    • For Home Assistant a PC like this is overkill, and a Pi is too much work. I am running HA on a HP T620 Thin Client and it's the perfect device for that setup. A proper case, real storage (SSD instead of an SD card), lots of ports etc. It is cheaper than all the other options as well.

    • OrangePi, RockPi, BananaPi, plenty of options.

  • Just bought the last one. Then I decided to get one more

    • +1

      How?

    • +1

      Still available.

      • Thanks. Got a few more from the last batch

  • Can it run Crysis?

  • Works great as a Plex server with bonus Homebridge

  • No wifi inbuilt?

    • +1

It is an office PC, so ethernet is preferred.
If you are in a rental, and can't run cable, a wifi dongle is $5.

I don't know what is going on in your life that you resort to feeling superior over consumer electronics.
But I joined in the comments because I still use similar machines as well as newer ones.

Real-world performance is not much different, in stark contrast to the olde days when every upgrade meant a doubling in speed that had obvious consequences.
Computer hardware has become boring. Market maturity. (But if you buy, please install an SSD.)

      • They are the same kind of people, never bought and tried some stuffs that we posted here but kept saying they are rubbish.

I have no problem with 4k video and with my 1060 3GB video card I can play game at 1080p

        • -2

Interesting. I have this CPU myself and I know its performance. It had its days but no longer in service. Why shall I specifically buy some old stuff from your post to be "eligible" to comment its user experience? I guess judging people couldn't be easier in your life?

Of course 1060 has no problem with 4K video, but what's your point with that? Does the fact 1060 can do 4K video help boost 4th gen Intel performance? Lol. You know what, I have absolutely no doubt and I know for sure that your 1060 3GB "can" game at 1080p, but "can" doesn't mean "well" or "quality". My little cousin has got this card and I know clearly how it struggles in modern 3A titles, from his complaints.

And I predict neg is the best you can do for this comment. LMAO.

          • @WayneOZ: We are talking about using this "used" PC for office, web browsing that kind of stuff, of course with SSD and more RAM if possible.

Keep the 500gb HDD and throw in this 240gb SSD for $20

  • Is this also a decent deal? Or will the dell consume less power?

Only 1 feedback, so buy at your own risk.

  • There was NEVER going to be enough stock of these!!

  • Has anyone else's order been picked up? I was provided a TNT tracking number on Friday, but the tracking just says "Your shipment data is lodged 31/03/2023".

  • what is the PSU?
    how many watt?
