I bought one of these, worked good for 4 months then just died.

    • +1

Bought 2, and mine have been going well since I bought them, maybe 2 years ago. If buying now I'd probably pony up for something that included an easier way to set up notifications after a door has been open for x amount of minutes though.

    • I second that. Had mine for about a year and a half and just died out of the blue. No lights at all.

  • +3

Have it 2 years now. works flawlessly. Can connect to google to open/close garage door via Google commands

    • Does it connect through carplay as well?

Dream of mine would be for the door to open on command through siri. Or better yet once I get 100m away from home in certain hours of the weekday (ie coming home from work), door automatically opens. Something like that

      • +1

Meross (Homekit edition) can open on command through Siri (I use it all the time) - it has geofencing, so when you are driving the Garage Door button pops up on my Apple CarPlay screen when I'm within a couple of hundred metres from home - you can use Siri to then open it or just press the screen
Not sure about automating the door opening once you are within a certain distance, but I'm happy with manually doing it at the moment, just in case the automation "accidentally" opens the garage door while I'm not around (although you will know about it with Meross alerts)

      • I have android so cannot comment on Carplay.

It opens via my Google assistant on my OS Wear 2.0 watch.

        • I recently got Meross installed for my Garage door and it works fine. I don't have Apple HomePod/TV (although I got the Meross HomeKit version) so I can't use those Apple CarPlay features.
I can't seem to figure out the best way to use Google Assistant with Meross. My Google Display Hub asks for a PIN to be set to open Garage, is that normal?

          • +1

@rahuahuj: Yes normal. Set a pin in the meross app for the gmdoor and then it will work via Google

    • Three years here. It has turned off twice, but it just needed resetting. I couldn't go without it.

  • I have had one of these in the garage for a few years now and have no issues with it what so ever.

    Unresolved Reports
    1 for Illegal/Inappropriate

Some people here are idiots. There's nothing illegal or inappropriate about opening your own garage door with your phone.

    • +3

this is from a garage door installer/repairer

      • +4

        "Garage door installers hate him!!"

    • No RCM; so not technically legal.

      https://www.acma.gov.au/know-what-you-must-do

But that'd be the majority of overseas stuff on ozbargin.

      • +1

No RCM; so not technically legal.

So who would be at fault? AliExpress aren't in Australia, the seller isn't in Australia, it's not being sold in Australia and it's not illegal to import it yourself for personal use. So unless you're a business importing these to sell, then that's not relevant and thus legal and appropriate.

        • Possession is prohibited under the equipment rules, at least for the purpose of operation.

          https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2023C00236

Not saying I agree, just that it is.

          • +2

@Argenteus: That applies to the "supply of electrical products" under ACMA. It's not applicable to me purchasing this for personal use.

            • @Clear: Not about supply;

              16(1) and 21(1)

16(1) - A person must not possess a device that does not comply with the EMC standard, if the possession is for the purpose of operation.

21(1) - A person must not possess a device that does not comply with the EME standard, if the possession is for the purpose of operation.

But hey, feel free to ask a lawyer.

              • @Argenteus:

But hey, feel free to ask a lawyer.

I did. Not applicable to me as an individual importing for personal use. I'm not a supplier.

                • -1

@Clear: Curious what part of 'A person must not possess a device' applies to supply?

              • -1

@Argenteus: Might be easy to look up how many people have been fined, I am betting it's close to zero.

The only time you would get stung for this is if there is a fire and the device was the source and has safety issues, or, it interfered with telecommunications equipment and a telco or the military noticed.

Honestly, I agree with banning importation of many of these items because many are shoddy and some are downright dangerous. The government is unlikely to do that because they get their 10%….

  • How easy are these to connect and setup? DIY?

    • The meross one was easy as. Hardest part was picking a spot to put the open/closed sensor

    • Easy. Probably same as Meross

  • +2

    Love the product pictures.

Ok google, turn on the garage

"Sure, I found a subreddit titled carporn with 1.7 million members. Do you want me to open it?"

  • Does it access your home WiFi network?

    • Yes and then syncs with Tuya app, which is how you control it. You can also control it via home assistant if you run that but it's a bit glitchy, or via google assistant

      • Worked fine with Tuya until last update- can't reset and connect to Tuya anymore

  • Just getting a garage finished being built, what's a good smart opener that:

    • integrates with Home Assistant
    • integrates with Google/Alexa (don't care about Apple)
    • includes or easily available safety beams (the ones that stop the door if there's something in the path)

I haven't really come across any that fit my reqs in the deals posted on OzB.

    • +1

I suspect the "safety beam" feature probably needs to be a feature of the auto garage door, not so much a product like this.

      • +2

No, that's not true. The safety beam is a safety requirement of a smart opener. There's no requirement for the standard opener to include this feature.

Edit: as I understand, there is an AS requiring the safety beam when installing a smart controller. There's many controllers available that do not have a safety beam feature, hence my requirement.

Edit 2: here it is…i.e. there's a lot of openers that don't meet the standard because they don't have the safety beam

        • +1

          I stand corrected :)
you learn something every day :)

          • @youknow: I'm sure some dumb garage openers have a safety beam capability, but given the smart controller is an add-on, I'd prefer to get the safety beam with the smart controller, not the dumb controller. They just seem very thin on the ground 🤔

    • +1

I've been using a Shelly 1 running ESPHome firmware for a year or so now.
Gets 12v off my Gliderol controller to run itself, added a little reed switch to sense if the door is closed.

Shared to both Siri and Google via HA, rather than talking to them directly.

As @youknow said, it's better to have the beam as part of the door rather than these devices, that way if something goes wrong or someone uses the stock remote you still have the safety.

Next iteration of mine will likely be a custom ESP32 board with up/stop/down relays for each door rather than a single "do something" per Shelly.

  • +1

So you simply say “hey google open garage door” ? What if someone outside says it clear enough for google to hear?

    • +1

You’ll need a pin as a secondary authentication

    • +1

Alexa will close the garage door with voice prompts, but says opening is not supported.

A added a custom routine to open the garage door when I say 'Alexa, open blue door', and the garage opens. Easier than saying the PIN every time.

      • I like that one

  • +1

Would this be safer than the standard IR controllers? Heard of some reports that thieves are hacking garage IR remote controls and opening them and stealing stuff.

    • i dont even have one of these but i would suspect in most situations where a potential theif has your phone at your door you have two levels of security

      1. your phone pin (do not run no pin!)

      2. your wifi password

my assumption would be you can open your door remote from work so the app can do that… this obviously bypasses wifi…. i would be reticient to allow this but they would lock this down to whitelisted phones, that you select and you can deselect if you lose a phone

for something this crucial there's a lack of documentation… i do have the pdf manual. its vague.

  • Does this let Google enable the CIA to show up in a black Van, open your garage and walk straight in?

  • I see no stock for the AU plug. Anyone can confirm?

    • AU plug OOS

      • yeah i wonder why

  • I have 3 doors and 3 of these openers. I have to put a mesh node in the garage to keep the connection up. Otherwise I had to reset them a few times a year.

When I only had 2, I was able to use google home to open and close the garage via voice command. Now it doesn't work at all. What do you name the garage doors so that google home will recognise that you are referring to the specific garage door. At one stage, it was searching for the nearest garage and giving me a business as a search result. Now Google home tells me that the garage door isn't set up but they are linked.

Another issue is that notifications from the Tuya Smart app used to pop up after 5min of leaving the door open. This is via Scene Automation. Now I don't get any notifications.

If anyone can offer some help, that would be great!

  • Bought the Wofea garage door in 2021 and using it with Smart Life TUYA. Recently it has stopped working with Amazon Alexa.

  • Just installed mine! Easy as, no issues. Got it working with my Google Home

I have a SecuraLift. Just connected the red wire to the OSC hole and the black to GND and off it went.
