    • as much as i hate musk,

      Why do you hate him?

      • +3

there was a whole thing when musk was over at the 87% mansion for dinner, and musk didn't wash his hands after going to the toilet before dinner.

      • +2

        Trying to sound cool

      • +7

Do you mean apart from the obvious antics that reveal he is pro-Russia, white nationalist, promotes dubious COVID/Pelosi/Q-anon conspiracies, accusing that guy in Thailand of being a pedo, the crypto-hawking, banning critics and parody accounts on twitter while promoting it as the last bastion of free speech, and lying about the capabilities of autopilot for the last 7 years or so?

How many reasons do you need? I hear he makes nice cars though.

        • So you took the blue pill?

        • +2

Don't forget the recent one where he was being a total scumbag to a disabled ex employee (Halli) via twitter and then did a humiliating backflip after wrongly bullying him.

          • @cmyk: Good to see the mob mentality here in full force.

            • @aja12: Don't worry, the cookers snowflakes that can't handle the truth will be here soon

          • @cmyk: Wasn't the backflip because if he fired him his contract said he'd get paid out a crazy amount of money?

            • +2

@colblair: Maybe but I'm guessing he realised he had picked on the wrong guy to bully and made a huge mistake by openly conducting an exit interview without any fact-checks. Typical of Elon and his sheeps that blindly follows. The mob mentality that attacked a disabled Icelandic of the year was disgusting.

      • +1

There are plenty of reasons to dislike Musk…
        https://www.greenmatters.com/community/why-do-people-hate-el…

    • +4

Cause they're overpriced to begin with. Tesla have a storied history of lacklustre QA and poor fit and finish, almost like letting a glorified software company make cars is a bad idea 🤪

Anyone dropping 90 grand on one of these things had demonstrably more money than sense.

      • +2

Care to show me a car with better performance than a model 3 performance for 90 grand?

        • +4

This depends on your definition of performance. For me it's more broadly the "capabilities of the machine, product, or vehicle".

This means my Skoda wagon that cost $18k, can do 1000km before refuelling and carry more stuff outperforms the Tesla pretty easily.

          • +6

@drprox: Does that mean by your definition that your Skoda wagon outperforms a Bugatti Chiron because it can carry more stuff?

            • +2

@Sim69: No, it only means it depends on your definition of performance.

Edit - for clarity, definitions of the word "performance" are not all shared and equal.

              • +7

@drprox: Today I learned - Every car is the performance model

            • +1

@Sim69: have you seen the servicing costs on a chiron? bugger that for a joke…

lets not even start with the insurance costs either.

              • +4

@jaybo: I literally had a deposit down then checked insurance and noped right out of that order!

          • +5

@drprox: Just for future reference, when someone talks about the performance of one of the fastest cars in the world, they’re not talking about how many shopping bags it can fit in the boot.

          • @drprox: Bunch of children in Oz bargain threads I swear. Can't imagine using a Bugatti as a reference point for a practical comparison of a vehicle when we live in a world of passenger cars and speed limits. You're not rally drivers. What planet are you guys living on? Raw performance is not a valid judgement criteria for a vehicle for 99.9999% of people

          • +1

@drprox: Well put together answer. No, Tesla fan boys still won't shut up. At the end of the day, if someone spent 90k on something (Tesla.. cough…) that's not worth the money, he would try his best to justify that his decision was smarter than it seems to the rest of the world which is only natural.

        • +6

          to the original question;

the model 3 is good for a 9:00 laptime around nords according to the list of production/street legal cars on wikipedia (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N%C3%BCrburgring_Nords…)

          based on that, here's a list of cars that should be under 90 grand that have more performance than a tesla model 3;

          • a 2001 honda civic type r
          • a 2005 ford focus st
          • a 2007 chevy cobalt
          • a 2014 SEAT León Mk3 Cupra
          • at least 2 variants of the renault megane (though those special editions are kinda pricey so it might nudge 90 grand)
          • seemingly any BMW M3 (new they're quite expensive, but i reckon i could find something in our range)
          • seemingly any Golf GTI or Golf R

for the top gear fans out there, it's also only 12 seconds faster than the infamous Jag S-Type Diesel from 2004 (though the model 3 is a full 1:08 faster than the transit van….)

          • +1

            @jaybo:

            a 2007 chevy cobalt

B-b-but muh "performance". The Tesla must take corners like a f**king cargo ship.

        • +3

Oh spare me, it's a road car, champ. If it comfortably does 110kph it's "performance" is fine, and there are PLENTY of nicer cars for 90k that fit that bill.

        • +1

Care to show me a car with better performance than a model 3 performance for 90 grand?

Depends if you like to go fast all day or just once per charge.
Why is it that for all this talk of performance you never ever see them being driven fast? It's almost like you can smell the range anxiety…

          • @1st-Amendment: Well thats more to do with speed limits than the car itself, ICE performance cars included.

            • +2

              @dealsucker:

Well thats more to do with speed limits than the car itself, ICE performance cars included.

Nope, I see tonnes of rev-heads hooning around in ICE cars all the time. I never see a Tesla been driven in any other way than granny-like.
Because the Tesla 'performance' comes with at a huge cost, it rapidly drains your battery, whereas an ICE car can go hard all day, everyday.

If you like 'performance' more than once, then the Tesla is a terrible choice.

        • +4

Probably all the 90K cars perform, look, and feel better than Tesla, this only performs better at the traffic lights ;)

        • +1

In Australia or rest of the world? If it's in China there are heaps

        • +1

As others have pointed out, plenty of better options for that price.

But also hilarious to consider that a key figure for people is how fast it goes when they're going to be going to same speed limit as everyone else basically 100% of the time. Makes no difference.

          • @DingoBilly: Can really tell from the comments who are the 16 year olds who probably don't even have a licence and just watch YouTube reviews on hypercars all day as a pipe dream and people who actually drive

      • +2

Tesla's are for status , nothing else , it's a big badge that say , I'm woke and I vote teals, not greens, greens are no longer cool enough

        • why so bitter? you seem jealous of their "status"

          • -1

@Creamsoda: all you have to do is read this thread and see what Tesla owners are all about :)

        • theres that

but theres also a massive financial saving too

can you imagine pairing up a tesla with a 10kw house solar array + battery backup system

          no fuel and electricity bills

yes the upfront costs are high, but in 5 - 10 years you break even and start making money

it just makes financial sense.. especially in a place like australia

then of course theres the performance and styling

i think the polestar 2 looks better, stunning car, unfortunately not as efficient as the model 3 so payback time is extended

          • @desync:

can you imagine pairing up a tesla with a 10kw house solar array + battery backup system
            no fuel and electricity bills

I agree, this is awesome. It's a real shame that the upfront costs make it only available to the rich, and renters can never jump in.

The poors just need to keep on paying for power and fuel, keeping them poor 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • -1

Why do you hate him? Because you are envious?

  • Is there a drop on the Y as well?

      • +3

To be fair, once it's actually driving it doesn't cost a whole lot to maintain
Source - own one, so $70k ain't that bad

        • +1

Still waiting on mine here in WA - Tesla pushed it to may from April but I'm not mad :)

          • @Solario31: Yeah once that app changes to confirm your pickup you become so happy lol.

        • your Tesla shares the following maintenance costs with a petrol car: 12v battery, Tyres, brakes, bearings, ball joints, bushings, U-joints, shocks, seals, lubrication, fluids and cooling, filters and more. some of these items will wear just as quickly, if not faster due to the increased weight and torque of electric vehicles.

it also adds a significant cost of the actual battery unit when that is due to replacement.

          • @Laserface: When is the battery due?

            • @Tleyx: Newer models have Li-ion 12v battery. Should last longer. There is no fixed life for the new battery. Car will warn when it has degraded enough to be replaced.

          • +1

@Laserface: Doesnt really use brakes, but the rest of your list is probably correct.

          • +1

@Laserface: Correct, but there's quite a lot more items a pure EV doesn't need to worry about. They tend to be the most expensive components too

            • @buckster: what items might they be? because the literal only difference between a tesla and a regular car is the fuel tank and engine vs a battery and electric motor.

Electric cars are not magic. you have only replaced the energy source and the power train.

              • @Laserface: No gearbox/multi-speed transmission is a pretty major difference.

                • @dazweeja: They have a gearbox, at the very least, a differential, which requires lubrication and service intervals.

edit: they have a reduction gear and a differential as part of the motor assembly, just so its clear.

              • @Laserface: Fuel pumps, timing belts/chains, catalytic converter issues to name a few. Pretty much everything and anything engine related obviously too

All things that add up in an older ICE vehicle.

Looking semi-forward (eventually) to when my ICE goes kaput and it's EV time

    • -1

Looks like they did to $68,900

      • +1

That’s excl. GST. Drive away is still $71,786.

    • +4

Yes $400 drop on the base model - negatively offset by the lack of a $550 charger which stopped on Mar 31

      • Huh charger cable is a optional extra?

Sorry I'm not familiar with Tesla offering.

        • No umc or home charger. Think of it like your old mobile phone slow chargers + cable.
The cable , extra too if you need to charge in shopping malls.

          • @bnh: They going the way of European cars then, everything are optional extras lol

  • +30

So good of Tesla to pass on the cost savings from removing the parking sensors.

    /s

    • +12

Such a stupid mistake to remove them and using cameras

    • +9

      Wow lol

An independent EV dealer and Tesla owner in the UK shot a video and demonstrated just how bad Tesla vision is when putting an updated Tesla Model Y through a number of basic parking situations.

Tesla removes parking sensors to save money, the results are predictably terrible
In the video the car can be seen reversing into a pedestrian at low speed, while claiming it still had room to continue further back.

Other parts of the video show the car’s situational awareness map constantly jumping around. At one point it shows a large truck in the way of the car, even though none of the vehicles around the car ever moved during the demonstration.

There are also parts of the video where the parking tech stops working altogether for a brief period.

      https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/tesla-removes-parking-…

      Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1g1okoQJEE

    • Please elaborate, what did they do??? No parking sensors on a Tesla? Wtf

      • +5

During the chip shortage, Elon decided to remove the Ultra Sonic Sensors (USS) from their vehicles to save costs and promised to have a solution for parking sensors wholly relying on cameras. His engineers warned him and said this wasnt a good idea but he pushed on anyway. 7 ish months later this update drops finally adding parking "sensors" only for it to not work even remotely as well as the sensors they replaced.

      • It’s a performance car bro

        /s

    • Parking sensors are $8 each. Wiring harness probably $20. :)

      • I think it had more to do with reducing costs and streamlining manufacturing. Demand for Tesla's have been through the roof, having to not cut out individual holes for each sensors and wiring them would have saved a lot of time in manufacturing and as a result save them even more money through less time spent on wages.

    • Tesla stupidly wants to be cameras only.

That's despite LIDAR being superior compared to cameras for navigation.

Sadly some people would likely still be alive today if their Tesla had LIDAR so it could have 'seen' the white truck against the white clouds…

    • +7

Haha this is 7 years old already, how time flies!

      • +2

I refuse to believe it's been 7 years.

    • +5

This was the GOLD comment on that thread:

I think it's an investment with high yield. As an individual, it's an upgrade to my living standard which I deserve. As for my profession, I believe it helps me to blend in to this new environment. First impression counts, I think it does make a difference. Lastly, my condition allows me to, so why not.

      350 negative votes!

      • -1

It was an investment. Unlimited charging for the life of the vehicle. Change batteries and keep going.

    • -5

      Sir, this is 2023 Ozbargain.

      Where we post things like:

Nintendo switch coming back in stock at RRP

Graphics cards being back in stock at 50% over RRP

Playstation 5 (disc versions) back in stock at RRP

This is no longer a bargain site and has not been for a long long time.

      • +4

Bargains aren't always defined solely by discounted price.

        • -2

I'd love to know your definition of bargain.

          'Back in stock?'

          • +1

@tightm8: if it's an in-demand, hard-to-find item that's back in stock for now - I'd say this is valuable info to pass on, wouldn't you?

Why should a bargain site be 100% about discounted items and nothing else? By that logic, the forums section would have to be removed altogether.

      • Look at this place as a site that informs you of when you don’t need to pay for the ‘going rate’ of things.

If something has been above RRP for 3 years, and then drops to RRP, isn’t that worth knowing about? If it’s at RRP for a week and then goes back up 20%, then that’s good to know.

I’d be more concerned about the deals that advertise savings of $1, or $3. Like those voucher deals to save $3. But people will defend those to say that they add up…

      • +2

✅ negatively votes on deals that other members submit
✅ complains about integrity of bargains
✅ hasn't posted a decent deal in over 7 years

        • -7

Very original comeback, never seen it before. Wow.

      • Nowhere in this comment has a negative vote been justified.

    • That was all time. I think we need an update on this.

  • +1

Can anyone hazard a guess about Tesla's thinking? It's too small to push anyone over the line but their figures will show it.

    • +3

in a vacuum, yes too small. but as you can see, it's being shared around as "news". so it's just paying for/doing marketing in a roundabout way.

    • Price war looming with other car manufacturers trying to get in on EV sales. Tesla getting ahead of the game

    • +1

A 5 percent cut in price when inflation is running at 6.8 percent sounds ok to me.

  • Just noticed a price drop on all models

Not sure how the Long Range could have a price drop, when it was only released today

    • +3

I think the Model Y LR was released today, the Model 3 LR got a price drop.

    • Just the 3 drop. Y still the same.

      • +2

$400 price drop on the Y base model.

        • 20 short

  • +2

can u pay by credit card and get price protection if it drops further

i know most dont allow it (only deposit) but unsure if tesla allows it

    • +8

No need to worry about using credit card protection. Tesla automatically gives you price drops which occur between when you order and when you take delivery. (Also if the price goes up in that time, you're locked in to the lower cost.)

      • -2

They’re pumping so many out with low demand you’ll get your car in weeks now days

        • +1

They’re pumping so many out with low demand you’ll get your car in weeks now days

LOL…. 'low demand', yet they sell every car they can make. Not too many other car markets around who can say that. GM has fields of cars waiting for owners.
