For those who have experience using it, how well does the under-display fingerprint sensor works in the Edge 30? I'm finding them extra lackluster as I've got dry skin so it is often more miss than hit (although I have only tried the one on a Galaxy S21).

    • Thank you! Bought it using Macquarie Bank's 3% off Amazon gift cards, with 3 minutes to spare for delivery tomorrow.

    • +3

      The fingerprint scanner demands patience.
It is slower than hardware sensors, and it is fairly picky about what it will scan, bearing in mind this is situated in the 'working' area of the phone, so any smudges/dust on the screen plus any distortion of your fingerprint (wet, slight greasy, etc) will cause to have a hissy fit.

Whilst it does the job, it is my least liked feature on the phone, and often decides to be a complete (profanity) at the most inconvenient times, meaning you're having to stop everything, wipe screen and thumb, and then see if it is going to give you access.
I much preferred the side sensor on the Moto Edge 20

Other than that, it's a pretty good phone.

      • Thanks for sharing! =)

    A54 isnt much more…

    • +3

      double the price?

      • You always buy them on sale, jb constantly lowering their price. That said… samsung gives you a better price when trading up from their s series… so I'd ultimately go that way it pays for itself.

        • And came with a free Watch 4 too until 20 April

    • Doesn't this Motorola come with water resistance? Whereas the A series usually have no water resistance at all.

      • recent A series have been coming with water resistance, apart from the ones on the cheaper end

        • Thats good to know, i had usually avoided the A series in the past due to no water resistance.

      • +1

Splash resistant I believe, not full water rated.
It's the only downside I found on this phone. Other than, it's the best thing I've bought in years

        • Does it come with wireless charging?

Splash resistance is good enough. At least you're not overly concerned if accidentally spill something onto it.

Also, water resistance helps when using the phone in colder weather such as snow, etc. This was based on my own experience when a friend brought a non water resistant phone to the snow it basically shut down.

    • +12

I wouldn't use Samsung software even if they paid me to.

      • +1

Oh yes. I have a pixel phone, which I love, but whenever I try and use my wife's Samsung, I just want to hand it back and say no thanks.

    • +4

      It's Samsung..eww

  • I think that this phone is far superior to most phones on the market, aesthetic wise…

The internals are OK, but nothing to write home about - the SD is a mid range and not even a 870 or some sh*t.

    • +8

At the end of the day, options are limited at this price range. Certainly packs a punch for $349

    • 778G+ is no slouch. You won't experience any slowdown and it plays games well too. It's very efficient too.

  • +4

    Incredible value

  • +3

    cheapest OIS camera phone

    • so camera quality is good? We all know moto is sh|t on photos …

      • With Gcam it should be pretty solid

        • I've used Gcam during my time with this phone. It sometimes works to create ever so slightly better photos but it sometimes gets a bit buggy & crashes.
Motorola is synonymous with camera software issues and the module on this is probably above average.

  • +8

Ohhh man wish the battery was 5000 mah, would have bought this in a heartbeat.

    • +4

Unless you're a heavy user, battery is pretty long lasting. A lot of battery optimisation in the software I guess. Plus it charges in a heartbeat. At this price its the best value for money on the market, trust me

      • +1

I understand that, but from what I've gathered from my experience, you lose about 1000mah in 2 years of regular usage. A 4000 mah phone is difficult to use after 2 years. I've got a Mi 9T Pro, going on 3 years now but I have to keep it charging in the car to survive. It's got a 4000 mah battery. Even if the charging is fast on a phone, if you are out and about, finding a fast charger or carrying one with you instead of having a bigger battery to begin with, isn't the answer for me. 5000 mah phones aren't that uncommon now and I hoping they let you use a phone without much battery issue for at least 3 years. The Poco X5 Pro is basically this phone with a 5000 mah battery, just not local, not as cheap and horrible miui. Been keeping any eye on the custom rom scene for that phone and will bounce on it once it starts. Such a shame because a 778 5G phone, with an AMOLED high refresh rate, mostly stock Android, locally available for 350, man if only it had the 5k battery. Also as a cherry on top, it even has official LineagoOS and PixelExperience support (custom roms).

        • +2

One of the good things of this phone is being super light. I mean, compared to my pixel 6 it's a feather. Every time I grab it I'm like, WOW. If it had 5000mAh battery it would weigh double probably and lose a lot of its appeal, at least for me. So it's a bit if a trade off.
2 years life for a $350 is pretty good anyway, I think.

    • +1

I have this phone. Charges ridiculously fast. Think 80% in like 10 minutes.

      • +1

That is blazingly fast, however if you have a look at my reply to Liongalahad above, form my experience going past 2 years on a 4k mah phone is difficult, the battery has degraded too much for it to be able to survive a day, at least for my needs. A 5000 mah battery is really just investing in at least another comfortable year vs 4k. Fast charging is great, but being reliant on it, I'm not a fan of that.

        • Wait, sorry the model I have is edge 30 Neo 5g. Not sure if it makes a difference as this phone also says it has TurboPower™(sic) charging capability so it should charge ridiculously fast as well.

As to the point you have raised, I think it's a very valid one and people should consider how it applies to their individual circumstances before buying a phone like this. For me this is a great phone is fantastic.

  • -1

Rather just grey import a Sony Xperia 10 IV with better battery life, expandable storage, no notch etc. Me no care about the camera.

    • +1

Interested in the Xperia. Anyone with any experience of performance on Australian networks

      • I have an Xperia XZ1, a flagship phone from a few years ago, at a great price. Unfortunately it has a global ROM to enable it to work here, as Sony don't support it locally. The downfall was that the NFC was rendered inoperable. I really wanted that, but I could live without it. Otherwise it was fine.

I have a Coles (Optus) long life SIM. I'm not much of a phone guy, receiving/making calls quite infrequently, but when I do, I need to make a call! About a year ago, Optus switched off one of their frequencies (2100MHz?) to re-purpose it for something else. Since then, NO incoming or outgoing voice calls (inc. voicemail)! Tech support are a bit light on for help, we tried everything including enabling VOLTE to get it to work. I thought it supported multiple alternative frequencies and "G's" so it would just find something else. No luck. Strange thing is that I can still get SMS, internet/data in and out, emails, notifications… I know that SMS is piggy-backed onto an "unused" portion of voice packets, so there is no reason calls shouldn't work if SMS is getting through. I've tried a Kogan and Woolies (Vodafone) network and it doesn't work on that network either. I haven't tried Telstra (looking to switch to Boost if I can get it to work), every time I go into a Telstra shop and ask to borrow a working SIM to see if it will make a simple call, nobody is interested in letting me try. Surely they have a "shop" or staff SIM to help with sales.

Anyway, that is my experience with trying to get an Xperia working on an Australian network. I'd love it if someone could fix my problem, it is a great phone otherwise :) I used it extensively in hospital recently to watch high quality YouTube videos and get email. It didn't miss a beat. I think the Xperia XA was the last officially supported one with an Australian firmware. Just be careful and double-check that whatever handset you are considering doesn't have issues using a global ROM on Australian networks.

Bought this for my gf last year, she needed a good phone for cheap, got her this for $300 from a guy selling it brand new from marketplace.
To this day I count this as one of the best buys of my life. Unbelievable value. Lightest phone on the market, amazing screen, fantastic design, super fast charge and suprisingly long lasting battery (for its size at least). Camera is not amazing but alright unless you are very much into photos. I own a pixel 6 and asked my gf to swap for free, she's said no 😬

    • +1

Wow amazing value for $300. Similar to paying $200 for Motorola G82 last year.

    • Does it have wireless charging? I got conflicting info out there.

      • +1

        Nope https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ypyfSfgzxI
but personally I don't mind. not a fan of wireless charging cos I know it's bad for battery health

        • Is it? Why is that?

          • +3

@kiitos: Actually I google to find an answer for you and I learnt that it's a common misconception and found out wireless charging doesn't harm phones' batteries. There you go, there's always something to learn 😅

            • @liongalahad: its actually bad for the environment, because its inefficient, like half the energy is waisted in the process.

            • @liongalahad: Wireless charging adds heat during the charge cycle, so would seem generally true. Likely only does not reduce battery life if your charger has a method to keep things cool/reduce heat transfer, such as a fan.

Of course a slower wireless charger produces less heat, so the rate of power it transfers is important too. Thus it could be that a low powered one has relatively little effect. But as there are quite a few parties to lose out from concerns over this, it is likely that there are numerous 'well-funded' studies to support the 'no harm to battery life' camp.

  • How would this compare with a Samsung S21FE? Yes i realise the S21FE is $130 more.

    • +1

I would've gotten the S21FE but the battery life seems like an issue. Had the S20Fe and the battery was pretty meh, had to upgrade my phone.

    • Where are you getting that for $480 - or are you using a trade-in

  • +4

Grabbed this a while back on the last special, probably the best phone I have ever had, nice and thin if you don't blast the battery you get a day out of it. Note that it hasn't received Android 13 yet, but that is Motorola for you.

  • +1

I considered getting this 6 months ago in this deal at JB Hiffi at the same price: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/727895

Was put off by the 4,000mAh battery though.
And lack of 3.5mm jack, no SD card slot and only USB 2.0.
Also no wireless charging and minimal water resistance.

The 144Hz refresh rate is overkill for me, but if you turn off the adaptive setting, do you get a choice of fixed settings or just the minimum 60Hz?

Seems impossible to find a protective case for this model too.
(Yes, I know it comes with a minimal one).

    • +4

It's so light that when you drop it the case it comes with is more than enough to keep it protected.

You can set the display refresh rate to 144, 60 or Auto.

    • +2

Thanks for pointing out the headphone jack, unfortunately a dealbreaker for me.

Ps: lots of cases on ali

  • +1

This looks a great deal and everytime something similar comes up I consider it but still unsure anything is really better than a Huawei mate 20 pro (ok I'm aware some phones might be but they cost a lot more).
Someone give me an excuse to upgrade!

  • +2

Apart from the battery capacity, this looks like decent value. Looks like it has LineageOS support too - https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/dubai/

Pros: Dual sim, 3rd party rom support.
Negatives: small battery, no 3.5 jack, no SD card slot, only USB 2.0.

    • USB2.0 is a deal breaker for me now. I like being able to dock my phone.

  • what's the screen brightness like when outside in daylight? is it bright enough or hard to see ?

    • I used it for a few weeks and it's quite bright (not as bright as the s23 ultra I'm now using (obviously)) but it chews through the battery if you're all day in the sunlight at high brightness. Overall pretty good phone especially at that price.

  • +1

This is a great deal, excellent phone for price, to the point of don't think just buy.

  • +1

I bought this when it was half price last time somewhere last year.. unbelievable value. this is an excellent phone. phone is very light, smooth and easy to use.. selfie camera is not great. but for half price I wouldn't worry. After using half a day on the first day, I ended up buying 3 more to give it to my parents and friends.

    • I'm not sure it's really half price. It was down to $499 within a month, and on sale for $349 a few months after that.
Even the JB ticket price is $426.

      • +1

I'm not sure it's really half price

It was a crazy deal here

        • Yeah, but it had already been down to $499 at JB Hi-fi before that deal - when it was barely a month old in Australia. And it didn't go back up to $699.

    • Fast charge on the moto but bigger battery on a14

    • +1

Moto for cleaner software and Snapdragon

  • Reviews say camera is not good.

  • Is this better than the Motorola edge 20 fusion I paid 249 for.

    • +1

Edge 30 is midrange, Edge 20 Fusion is budget range

  • +1

Good guys have the Edge 20 Fusion

You lose a few things but gain
    5000 mah battery
    3.5mm
    Sd expansion
    Powerful processor
    Larger screen

    Lose
    Screen refresh
    Heavier
    Less android support?

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/motorola-motorola-edge-20-fus…

    • +1

Edge 20 Fusion has a weaker processor. It was $250 at JB last year, I wouldn't pay $350 for it in 2023 with no updates left.

    • +1

I have the Edge 20 fusion from last July's $249 jb deal. I "upgraded" from a G7 Power model bought in 2019.
Biggest frustration with the Edge 20 is the protruding camera lens on the back in the top corner. If you lay the phone down on a table and try to use one hand/finger to operate it (say, typing), the phone wobbles. No eating with one hand and operating the phone easily with other hand.

  • How long is this phone getting updates for? How long could you use it for? Thanks.

    Ptsd with this phone.
    https://ibb.co/QpLtdWM
    https://ibb.co/gjWs4dT
Can do a tear down, it's a thin plastic sheet glued on to the back. Plastic all round. Very thin phone which tends to overheat but it has a great screen and software experience.

    • Not as robust as the older Motorolas. What happened if you don't mind sharing Ptsd?

      • +1

Haha no worries, it was my fault I brought the phone along with me to a bumper car ride. Got impacted on the right but I didn't think much of it. Went to look at phone after and screen was full of artifacts and input no longer worked. Surpisingly no cracked glass but the plastic frame could not handle it.

Don't be like me, you'll need one of those solid cases that provide strong support and no flex (not the free one provided). They were so hard to find so I got rekt with the factory case.

        • What a ride! You needed an OtterBox or similar. I've bought rigid cases on eBay and AliExpress

    • +1

Thin plastic sheet glued to the back is the standard now. Even phones with a glass back are often just a thin piece of glass attached to a plastic sheet.

      • +1

That's true but it was really a flimsy piece of paper like plastic. Can send a photo later on.
I stick to phones with aluminum or steel frames now, never going with a plastic frame phone again.

        • Good to know. I'm still hiding onto a unibody metal Moto phone. It is a tank.

  • What would be the better buy? This or the Motorola G82 which was on sale for $349 a month or so ago?

  • Argh I snozed and I lozed

    • +2

JB Hi-Fi has these half price sales on Motorola regularly

  • Wow I bought this like an hour ago for 349 talk about good timing

    • +2

Ditto. Though I'm not convinced I should have - haha - same doubts that stopped me buying it at this price six months ago.
I wonder when the price went back up to $699 (nonsense price) - I think my transaction was probably after noon, but I was talking to the sales person about it for a good quarter of an hour.
Almost convinced myself in store to stock with my current smashed screen until a more convincing deal crops up, likely eofy. Problem is I don't really know what a better phone and price would be - been considering the Edge 20 Pro at $499 (this phone is probably as good), the Pixel 6a if it was $499 (I cover the camera but it's a bit smaller than I'd like) and then someone mentioned a Samsung S21FE at sub-$500 (surely a better camera again) but all three of those were $150 dearer and not available at that price right now.
Maybe the Edge 30 Fusion would come down to my budget but has p-oled rather than amo-oled.

      We'll, thanks OP.

      • +2

You made the right decision. Great value.
Edge 20 Pro's security update finishes in Aug 2023.
Pixel and Samsung don't include the charges and also not dual SIM (physical).

      • I just want to ditch my wallet and Apple won't allow myki on their phones, so I have to buy an android. This one seemed okay, I haven't fired it up yet but it's a good size screen and slim, cheap enough I won't be overly sad if it bends like my last Android phone in my pocket.
