Not sure of the end date but a very capable travel router at 25% off. I'm waiting for the Beryl AX to go on special but thought the slightly larger Slate AX may be of value to someone. Beryl AX is smaller, has lower power requirement but is missing a few features (microSD storage, EAP and is theoretically slower) compared to its larger brother.

Looks like cheapest ever was $144.41 but still a decent discount if you want one now.

Comparison of different models

Slate AX: Power Input: Type-C, 5V/4A. Power Consumption: <8.75W. Dimension / Weight: 125 x 82 x 36mm / 245 g
Beryl AX: Power Input: Type-C, 5V/3A. Power Consumption <8W. Dimension / Weight 106 x 83 x 33mm / 196g

  • Good deal actually factoring in GST etc.
Has been cheaper before but not by much.
It's a great router and you are actually able to power it with most USB power adapters

I power this with my phone charger - > then from the USB port on the Slate I have my Powerbank on charge, and everything else charges from the power bank.
It's not elegant but I use all of my gear to best effect without having to carry around loads of plugs.

Spending most of my time overseas and this is an absolute lifesaving unit for me. I doubt i'd use it if i was in one place though.
But boy it's great to have anytime you travel. Like the mango on steroids with much better performance, signal

    • I got a Beryl, and powered it with the original adapter. Then I used its USB port to power a RaspPi. The router kept restarting, and the support team suggested to not use the USB port for powering anything.
Not sure what's the wattage of your phone charger :(

      • That's interesting because if you connect your phone for tethering, it's meant to be charging the phone.
For charging, if you've got a 100W power supply like Baseus or SlimQ then it should be easy to power most laptops, a powerbank and the router.

        • I now wonder whether I can use an Android phone as a travel router: wifi hotspot, VPN,… It will be more convenient than a GL.inet router. I only need something to server 2-3 wifi clients

      • +2

Raspberry Pi requires 5V/3A itself so not suprised a USB port won't power it.

        • thanks.
Do you have the info regarding the minimum input power needed by each GL.inet model?
I'm looking for something which could be powered by my MacbookPro while I'm travelling.
          Thanks.

  • Sorry, I can this take a sim card? I didn't see anything about that in the description

    • +1

No it can't. You can plug in a dongle though or phone tether.

      • Okay, thank you!

      • With the iPhone tethering, do you just plug it in the USB-A slot and it will pick up the 4/5G signal or does it have to get the hotspot signal from iPhone for it to work?
        Thanks

        • you can do either but usb is slower

  • I must of missed that deal at $144, but ended up buying it for $157 from Amazon.

This is still a good price.

  • Is this compatible with token ring?

  • I heard these suck. Non vanilla OpenWRT and security bugs galore. Is this true?

    • No

      • How long is the wait for security updates? i.e when OpenWRT updates the router how soon does an update come out for one of these units?

The info from this thread isn't too good:
        https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/how-secure-are-glinet-devices/27…

Their speed of updates depends heavily on the product. If the product is ‘flagship’, then it’s relatively fast, like this one. If the product is old, they will do the updates last or not at all for those devices. Having said that, Glinet is still proprietary firmware and should really be compared to let’s say tp-link. Is it updated and tested more frequently than tplink products? I would say yes. If you want total security, build your own openwrt and update yourself. I’m way pass that and would rather have a community/company to do that for me and don’t mind a few security concerns which will be picked up along the updates.

    • If you prefer vanilla anyway, can always run vanilla. I doubt you will find a better travel router this size capable of running openwrt and have decent wifi speed at this price.

      • I read this is not possible due to lack of drivers in vanilla. I agree regarding form factor and wifi speed. I want one but it needs to be secure.

I think you can install vanilla OpenWrt on many GL.inet products. I had a GL.inet Beryl, and OpenWrt works fine. Rooter (https://www.ofmodemsandmen.com/routers.html) also supports many of them.

  • Waiting for Beryl as well

It can be run off powerbank right where this one needs 20v?

    • I have a Beryl and yes it should be able to run off a powerbank.

    • I had a Beryl. It kept restarting (a few times per hour when we were watching FullHD movies), and occasionally during nighttime. The support team said it was either because I was using a non-stock power adapter, or too much power was pulled from its USB port.

As you can see from the actual power consumption they "over spec" the AC adapter for when the routers under load. Assuming your only using base functionality and not doing anything too heavy and not drawing power from the USB port you cam run under lower power than the supplied AC adapter.

FYI OP, Beryl AX is $160 with a $15 discount coupon right now: https://www.amazon.com.au/GL-iNet-GL-MT3000-Pocket-Sized-Cyb…

Looks like other models (including mango) also on special: https://www.amazon.com.au/s?i=merchant-items&me=A3M67G05FKDB…

Missed out on $135 in January so hoping for a similar deal soon :)

      • +1

        @oleglap It's back at $135.15

  • Thoughts on slate plus for an upgrade from mango for travel/portable hot spot?

Found one hotel only had 5G recently so couldn't use the mango

    • Advantage of dual band is also that you can WISP on one band and WLAN on the other and not half your throughput like a single band device.

      • WISP is just on the AX models?

        • No WISP is the standard repeater mode on all gl.inet models. It's what allows you to repeat another WiFi signal with a new subnet.
On a single band unit you are repeating and broadcasting on the same band hence halving your throughput.

          • @Limbot: ok, and mango is single band since it's 2.4ghz only
