  • Can OW Price match?

    • +1

Unlikely. They'll argue Telstra ID required. Blah blah. Might get lucky though.

      • +1

can confirm, some OW stores i went to were happy to PB while others refused so ymmv

        • +1

OW price match was useless for me for a pixel 4 years ago.. They rang to ask if the phone is locked to Telstra and they told them it was so I couldn't get the price match. I bought it from Telstra and it was unlocked. That crap Telstra employee cost be 5%!

    • +2

When I did it a few months ago, I said I'm already a Telstra customer, so they price matched

      Edit: price beat

    • Can confirm that OW will price BEAT it - I just walked out with one for $711ish. I had to do a little pushing to convince them that you can walk into a Telstra store and get it without a plan or active account.

  • +13

Grabbed a P7 via Telstra in Dec same price.

    Had a recently damaged p5.

If you've got a P5 still, wait til P8. (was my plan til I damaged my 5)

The 7 isn't enough of an upgrade imo. And is a severe downgrade for fingerprint sensor.

Still giving a + because it's still a good price for a 'flagship' phone!

    • I just ordered a P6 for $580 on ebay. Reckon that is better deal than this?

      • +8

2 gen behind phone. Wont pay more than half.

      • Used or New? I got my used pixel 6 for $370 from ebay.

        • New

      • 1 year less of updates and such. P7 is a nicer form factor than the 6 and has face unlock. Otherwise functionally the same.

        • So would you pay 25% more for that?

          • +1

@Budju: 20% more in terms of longevity if you actually plan to use it for that period of time. And yes I prefer the form factor I the 7.

            I, personally, didn't even consider the 6 when I stuffed my 5!

            If that's any indication

              • -2

@Budju: I'm loving the random mass downvotes

                • -2

@Budju: Lol another down vote. What is wrong with you twats

@Budju: Haha, just getting so downvoted here

@Budju: Just an amazing community we have here on ozb, so nice and friendly

      • +8

The pixel 6 was a total flop, Google made its users beta testers for its new hardware. Modem and reception issues that were never fixed, battery drain on cellular (poor battery life in general) and underwhelming video performance.

If I were you I'd cancel my order as soon as possible and get any other phone, it's not worth the headache trust me.

        • Seriously? Oh damn… Would you mind telling me where that has been documented?

        • -2

          Hey DogsRYummy,

I can't find all these negative reviews / issues you're talking about. Mostly all the review of this phone are very good. Can you please shed some light on these issues before it arrives so I can decide if I should return it?

    • +2

Yeah, I have a P5 still, no reason to upgrade really, but Google will stop security updates soon :(

      • Honestly I got better battery on my P5 than my 7! I still have it but it's got some bled pixels top middle. Still usable as a backup temporarily but concerned it'll flat out just die one day..

If they offered updates 5 years like the newer ones I probably would've got mine repaired or got a refurb for cheap!

      • Pixel 5 for lyfe!

        • P5 was really the sweet spot before they switched to the tensor (basicly a exynos with a little extra stuff) battery life is crapper and not much gain overall. Glass issues scratches. I only have possitive things to say about software

      • I switched from P5 to P7 because the battery for the P5 was not lasting the day but I missed the form factor and the finger print sensor for sure. Waiting for the smaller size P8 makes sense for those still holding on to their P5 as the safety updates end in later part of 2023. I got used to P7 but the finger print sensor is still annoying and it has become a 2-handed phone. But I like the Pixel phones for the software - love the call screening and scam text detection.

        • The Pixel 9 Pro will come in a small and large size reminiscent of Apple's current lineup.

If you can use your Pixel 7 another year it would be worth the wait as Google always seems to gimp the non-Pro models in some way or another, whether it be battery size, display, wireless charging speeds or build quality.

          • +1

@dogsryummy: Assuming the battery doesn't tank, I'll probably keep my P7 til the 'x' or 10 series.. I try to go 3 generations at least! Would definitely be keen for a smaller phone though.. 5 was such a good size.

        • Call screening and scam text detection- I may be wrong but also available on Samsung Galaxy series? Does show on my S21+

  • Discount applies on the 256gb models to… Tempting

Just need a Telstra Id? I’m currently with Telstra but plan on (profanity) then off for woolies or coles.

    • If past deals are anything to go by, you just need Telstra ID for the store login. The phone is unlocked and wouldn't require you to have an ongoing Telstra service once the order is fulfilled.

Got a 6a for my Mrs through the same sort of deal, which she's been using on Telechoice. I have like +$10 credit on my billing balance and for some reason my account never "deactivated". Haven't had an active plan for years.

  • +2

It's a good phone, not iPhone or Samsung quality but software seems to be where this phone shines

    • +1

I recently got the phone to replace my 4a 5g, disapointing battery life to be honest ..if your a heavy user id go with a different phone/brand to be honest. Everything else is quite good.

      • I have to agree on the battery… I'm charging it twice a day, I really hope they can fix this with updates as the battery is fairly decent.

It's bare bones android, so not much bloat other than googles tracking stuff (which is probably the reason for battery drain)

        • +1

Damn, how many hours screen on time do you get? Battery life sounds terrible if you have to charge it 2x a day. My POCO X3 lasts through the day just fine.

          • @CrispyChrispy: I reckon I get about 5ish hours of SoT, I do run a vpn all the time plus have all of googles services running. It can last the day if youre not always on your phone, just not as long as an iPhone, coming from IPhone 11 pro max to this was a step back in battery performance.

In saying that I charge twice a day, my phone's off charge at 7am, when I get home around 3:30 it's about 30%, which I charge enough to use until midnight. So it's not the absolute worse. (My OCD won't allow me to have my phone below 20%)

      • Unfortunately that's the beast that is Exy… I mean Tensor.

    • +1

I honestly prefer my Pixel 4 to my Samsung S21… the user experience on the Pixel is way nicer even if the Samsung supposedly has 'superior' specs.

      • I just can't with oneui. I tried, I really did. I dont like how things are done on the Samsung side.

        • Agreed, many things are far better on Samsung, way more things to customise and for a long time they had the most usable features. Slowly Pixel has caught up, still way behind on features/customisations but it's more consistent. Still incredibly buggy and unreliable for me though.

    • +2

Thank god it's not Samsung quality. Every galaxy I get ends up getting the classic Samsung buggy lag after a year or two.

And no, having to factory reset your phone and restart it once a week is not a good solution, it's just Samsung fan copium.

  • Can you get this phone deal without a plan?

    • +1

      Yep

      • how? Won't let me buy it outright without plan

        • +1

I just went through the cart and got to the page asking for payment details to test.

Select outright, don't add any plans just keep scroll down past the Add a Plan button and you'll see the blue Next button. Follow your nose from there.

          • +2

@daanish: Yea, After pressing the next button without adding a plan you have to login/register with telstra ID.
            then it says:
            "Unable to process your order
You need to have a service with us to buy a device outright. If you don't have a service, you can only purchase a device outright with a plan. "

            • @OzBBQ: That's very strange.

            • @OzBBQ: I just completed the order without any issues. I have no service with Telstra just a TelstraID.

I went to their store this morning but the people were very rude, then called OW, they said they wont price beat. Then went to JB, very helpful and could order for me but could not walk out of the store with one. Hope this helps someone.

              • @Parth71: Can you please provide the steps you used to purchase online? Did you select outright?

                • @OzBBQ: Yes selected Outright and it had my ID details already, so only other thing was to put in CC details.

                  • @Parth71: This doesn't work for me for some reason :( Ill go in store. thanks

        • I'm having the same problem.

  • p7A coming out soon 6.1'
together with Pixel Tablet first in the world with detachable speaker stand
    ETA June June

    • Not the first tablet with speaker stand.

      https://youtu.be/2EeiKet4UXg

      • Maybe they mean first ever Pixel tablet, but unclear, I agree.

        • Pixel C was first pixel tablet by Google?

          • @Ronnnie: So it was! I am out of ideas, then.

      • first in the world , with style and flair

    • But the 7a is the same price as this deal (at retail) and doesn't really have anything over the 7. So I can't see the 7a driving the price of the 7 down.

Even phone size, 7a has a bigger bezel, so the smaller screen doesn't mean a much smaller phone.
The 7 and 7a are the same width, which only a slight height difference (which is a less important ergonomically).

Would this be worth upgrading from a Huawei P30 Pro?

    • Interested to know this too. I’ve got a mate 20 pro. I’ve got The iPhone mini 12 from deal few months ago. I prefer the Huawei battery life even though it’s much older . Not sure if the pixel 7 will be an improvement

      • Im thinking from an upgrade to the camera perspective as well as new updates to the phone as I am not sure when update support for the P30 Pro will cease.

        • Camera, Updates, clean AOS all of these yes… Battery life no (not knowing what your are used to battery wise or how much your on your phone) .. out of the box if you don't tune the apps using your battery in the background it is quite bad.

          • +1

@scud70: Hmm its for my partner and she isnt the best at keeping her battery charged. May give this a miss then.

            • @nedski: go for a midrange Sammy or similar with a 5000ma battery and it'll go for days.. this thing under moderate use won't last a day

              • @scud70: She really likes the camera on the P30 Pro and thought the Pixel 7 would have an equal good camera or better and it had a nice price point. The s23 seems to have a good camera but the price is still a little up there.

                • @nedski: Camera and pictures is the main reason I've stuck with pixel… Even my 4a 5g was better with battery out of the box than this lol… But yeh camera software and features on pixels are great.

S23 is probably best of both worlds so maybe good to wait for a drop in price 🙂

    • +3

I can answer that for you. I have a Pixel 7, which replaced a Mate 20 Pro. My wife has the P30 Pro.

My advice would be not to upgrade unless your current phone is on its last legs. The Pixel 7 is really good for the price. It's well made, cameras are good and everything works nicely, but… It does nothing that the P30 Pro doesn't already do so, if it were me, I'd hold on to my money until you need rather than want a new phone. Save your money and do your bit for the environment too…

Also, a major gripe for me on the Pixel is the slow charging. I don't regret buying it, but it's really annoying that they didn't include fast charging, like almost every other mobile has nowadays.

      • Doesn't fast charging reduce overall life of the battery?

        • That may be true, but I just replaced the stock battery in my Mate 20 after 2.75 years. That's on the longer end of a decent battery life, but I did also keep the charge mostly between 20% - 80% over its lifespan. Fast charge took about 20 - 25 mins to get to 80%.

It cost me about $35 I think to replace with a genuine battery too, so at that price I'd be happy to replace the battery even more frequently anyways.

  • Been looking at this since I broke my s21 plus, and currently on an iPhone 8.

    Users, good phone?

    • Yeah, it's solid. For the money you'll struggle to get anything better. It's not perfect but it's definitely not half as good as something double the price.

      • Do you have 128 or 256gb?

My s21+ was 128 and can’t actually remember if I was anywhere near the limit.

          1. I don't store much on it so not an issue for me.
  • Would the phone be carrier locked to Telstra if bought outright?

    • Nope it's unlocked.

      • I just contacted Telstra support, and a support staff informed me the outright phone would be locked to Telstra.

        • Pixel's are not locked. Check the previous Telstra deals.

          • @Twix: Thanks. I just checked with another Telstra support staff and he mentioned you can get the unlocked device but only via the Telstra outright phones website.

  • +1

Would someone mind ELI5 please the difference between the 7 and 7a? Or the a versionw in general. I've looked at the spec sheets but can't see a huge difference and I would lean towards getting the newer one. And google is just hyping both with marketing speak.

    • +1

Not much between them. 7a is only a fraction smaller, 7a has larger bezels and a plastic back and is slightly thicker. I've seen 1 single comparison of cameras on the internet and believe the 7 should have a bit of a better camera but the 7a would have been on pre release software. The 7 is marginally heavier by I think 4 grams (I could be wrong on that). Otherwise same O/s, same processor, same amount of support. Personally I'd choose the 7.

    • 'a' versions also don't normally get wireless charging, just check if you need this

      • All the leaks are saying it will have wireless charging.

  • Will 128gb size struggle say in 5 years time?

    • +1

who knows, but there wont be OS or security updates in 5 years, so if that's important to you, you'll have a new phone before 5 years is up anyway

    • unlikely as it might be super cloud with quantum computing. Who knows.

    • I find it restricting today, so I'll say yes - going for the 256gb.

  • how do you get it without having a telstra plan?

  • +2

Worth pointing out you can also use any Telstra rewards points you may have to reduce the price further. I'm going to use 71,000 points to reduce by $200.

  • I just tried buying this phone and I created a Telstra ID, but at final checkout I got the following error:
    "Unable to process your order
You need to have a service with us to buy a device outright. If you don't have a service, you can only purchase a device outright with a plan."

    • Yep same. Sounds like this deal is only for existing telstra customers…

      • I just went into Officeworks today and they price beat it to $711!

        • What! i called and they said no. Are you already telstra customer?

          • @OzBBQ: I had to repeat the following a few times nicely - That this promotion is one you can walk into the Telstra store and buy outright without any existing Telstra service. It's just the online store wants an ID.

            • @strich: had to call 2 OW but i got it in the end!

      • Get a $2 Sim activated and you will be their customer

  • +2

Just for context, I wanted a P7 but was put off due to reviews saying the battery was bad, and half the reason I wanted a new phone was for better battery life. Also a lot of reviews said charging was slow, or the camera lense would crack easily.

I purchased one anyway. Battery is amazing. Anyone needing to charge a P7 twice a day should enter phone rehab. I make calls, browse the net, watch videos, use google maps for 2 hours a day etc, and have never needed to charge it twice. If I need to top it up the fast charging does a good job.

For example, 5hours screen time today and I still have 35%. Do the maths…

Camera is great. Phone feels good. Have noticed one or two bugs but nothing serious. I'd buy it again

  • Glad I got this for $599 now, plus discounted GCs. Worried the 7a release price point would make it cheaper, EOFYS is coming through…
