    Nice

Should continue to see prices drop to this level over next few months?

    • +8

      We shall indeed

      • Because of an expected hardware refresh or the scene is more competitive now?

        • +11

Probably a mix of both but more focused on competitiveness, think 30/70

        • +6

Valve confirmed they won’t do a hardware refresh anytime soon

        • +2

they wont refresh hardware till atleast 2025 i dunno why people seem to think Steam Deck hardware is suddenly weak now

          • @Freestyle: Lol yeah last year it was a beast now it sounds like it's old tech. I guess in the tech world it is considered old by now but I'm sure it can still play current games at 30fps at least.

  • Great Price !!

  • Great deal

  • +2

Is it true this can play switch games better than the switch? Like all games?

    • +18

no, depends on the game. TOTK is 20fps - 25fps

      • +14

That's what I get on my switch 😂

        • +4

What's funny is how the switch homebrewers can get a much better experience if they overclock memory speeds to get a stable 30fps whereas legit switch owners don't have that luxury.

      • +1

Nope, mostly 25-30 now, frequent emulator updates are improving the performance

    • +2

The yuzu emulator can play some games, but it really depends how much effort has been spent tuning the emulator for a particular game. Some games can get better frame-rates and/resolution. But you also need to own a Switch and the game in question and be able to pull some unique key from it.

      • +7

But you also need to own a Switch and the game in question and be able to pull some unique key from it

        Legally? Yes.

Illegally? Prod keys are readily available online.

I finished Mario Odyssey (haven't played it since I beat it around launch), flawless bar load times initially being a bit long on the first ever time you go to an area. Tears of the Kingdom I got through the main tutorial bit and got down to the actual island (before I accidentally deleted my save, long story, oops) about a week before launch, so without the day one patch and everything and without further emulator optimization, that was fantastic too, I had the 30 FPS patch mind you, and while I wasn't counting AT ALL, it was definitely smooth and consistent, whatever the frame rate truly was. Sonic Mania is flawless as you'd expect. Splatoon 2 and 3 work great but idk if it does online or whatever, I just threw it on to finally play the single player stuff. Mario Kart 8 is exceptional, though as a Wii U up port it should be, you do need to jump through one initial hoop to get past the Mii creator screen though (in Yuzu, apparently not in Ryujinx). and idk, there's a few off the top of my head I've done.

Tony Hawk ran okay with loooonger load times than I could be bothered with so I deleted it, it did have some visual hiccups here and there though, textures not loading right, etc. but it ran fine. My Friend Pedro ran like shit, so did Superhot, so I just bought both of them off code seller sites for like $3 a pop.

I've played more but that's all I can remember off the top of my head. All the big heavy hitters that people actually care about seem to be well and truly optimized on the emulator, smaller stuff like Pedro might be shittier on account of less time being spent on optimizing them, idk, I also only gave it 2 or 3 levels before I decided to just buy it anyway. Point being, you'll have an overall pretty bloody good time doing Switch on it, I have.

Edit: I only use the default version from EmuDeck, I do no tweaking or anything of any sort, I am big dumb dumb. The 30 FPS patch came with TotK when I downloaded it, or else I wouldn't have used it either. The dude above is right about needing keys, but it's not that simple, there's just one key file you need to download, it's a Switch system file or something, basically download that as you would any other BIOS file for any other emulator, and you'll be fine.

Edit 2: I refuse to rebuy the Crash trilogy for like a 6th time, so I put the Switch version of that on there, and the 1.0 version is great, didn't bother with the update wasting storage space since all 3 were actually on cart (unlike you, Spyro) and they run great too.

Must hodl for Rog Ally! Arghhhh cant resist any longer.

    • what do you find better on it? I'm wondering myself if the screen on it is a waste, the specs won't be able to utilize it at all

      • +1

the specs won't be able to utilize it at all

Eh except reviews saying the screen is definitely appreciated? The only things that’s a downer about the screen is that cant expect too much battery life out of it.

      • +5

        But double the price?

        And no sleep standby?

        • +10

512gb storage on ally, better screen in terms of refresh rate and colour accuracy, more processing power, and running windows so easier compatibility with games and programs in general and more driver updates.

Plus because it's running windows, you can always buy something like a uperfect X usb-c dock and turn the rog ally into a laptop running full windows programs.

          • +35

@DangerNoodle: Hold the phone there, friend.

A few things, if I may.

Storage: Steamdeck not only has a 512 option, it also expandable storage AND many guides online on how to swap out the existing HDD. Don’t let storage size influence your purchase, this isn’t an iPad we are talking about!

Screen: yep, no doubt about it- bigger, brighter, higher refresh rate. All of which is great on a machine plugged in to the wall. But just checking - have you seen reviews of what the battery life is like when gaming at 120hz full resolution?

Windows: again, not something you should let sway you. Dual booting on the steamdeck is extremely easy. Infact I would give the “win” here to the steamdeck for having the choice of the two operating systems, instead of being forced into one.

Not only that, the standby issue is a big one with windows portables. Steamdeck can go into standby mode at the drop of a hat, and resume with no issues. Windows hasn’t quite got this part figured out yet.

Anyway. Just thought the above was worth noting, as the Ally at JB hifi is $1400 - and at $650, this is less than half the price (!!). You could buy this and upgrade it to a 1TB model and still be $650 in front.

            • -2

@7h85tnh8345thvn8: The cost of steam deck + 1TB ssd is around $800, while you can get ROG Ally from JBHIFI for $1,299 ($1,169.1 if you happen to have some discounted GC.

For around $400 more, you can have a better screen, CPU and be ready to go (without any upgrade for ssd or system). Personally, I'd pick ally over the SD.

              • +7

@Helloworld07: Yet you would be downgrading battery life and would be locked into an operating system that isn’t friendly for portables - food for thought. All good to have your preferences but it’s important that we are all on the same page with the differences.

I personally can’t wait until they make a handheld with an oled screen that isn’t a switch!

              • @Helloworld07: I am happy to pay extra $400 for a system that can be newer games.

            • +1

              @7h85tnh8345thvn8: All valid points.

With the display on the rog ally, it's not just the upper end of the 120hz that makes it good, it also has freesync and runs as low as 30hz (assuming I'm reading the info correctly) so you could still benefit without as big of a detriment to battery life. You could technically run both at similar settings and you'll get similar battery life but the rog ally may appear smoother due to freesync. And on both devices there is the option to run the device with a power bank on the go.

The standby solution for the steam deck is definitely useful. I quite appreciate this feature on my switch. I'd hope windows will offer something like this but I doubt it will be anytime soon.

The ROG ally had a pre order price at 1299. But I'm hoping the competition in this market will see prices of the steam deck, rog ally and ayaneo drop. Competition is always better for the consumer.

And some food for thought is that whilst both can be dockable, the rog ally has the xg port which provides support for their external GPUs. Whilst this isn't exactly an exclusive option for the rog ally as I'm sure there is a way to do this on the steam deck using a usb-c dock, it does provide more options for those that would rather use an eGPU dock.

I'm keen to see how the portable PC market progresses. I'm hoping it won't end up as a phase that ends like 3d glasses did. What I would be interested in seeing in future would be a portable gaming handheld with something like the Lenovo T1 glasses. Could be an interesting way to game on the go with a perceived larger display.

              • +1

@DangerNoodle: Worth adding a few more points to your excellent breakdown:

                • The Steam Deck has a Valve designed chip, which is much more efficient at low power usage (10W) and actually performs better than the Ally at this power draw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOMiEI7ojd8
                • Many reviews prefer the Steam Deck's sticks and the track pads are pretty handy for a lot of stuff
                • The SD has been around for a while, so there's great support - this is something the Ally will eventually hopefully have, but will suffer from for a while

Ultimately it probably comes down to whether a person is OK to play games at higher FPS/graphics settings, but for a pretty short period of time. If it's used a lot for train commutes, then the Ally is pretty good. For longer sessions, Steam Deck wins.

                • +1

@cnut: FWIW Dave2D has reviewed the new Ally update and it does much better than before, within around 10-15% of SD performance. So it's much more competitive now.

                  • @cheng2008: Yeah I saw that earlier today. Good news for the Ally.

            • +1

@7h85tnh8345thvn8: Yup. Though the absolute biggest issue is how inefficient the Ally is in silent mode.

I run my Steam Deck at 9W it runs a massive number of games beautifully, with 4+ hours battery life.

If Asus can fix this issue then the Ally will become a hell of lot more attractive. Until then, I see it more like a gaming laptop which requires a wall plug at all times.

              • @seerious: I stopped using my gaming laptop because of this. The battery is so shit that I may as well just use my main PC.

          • +1

            @DangerNoodle: Also can buy a 1tb upgrade for 110 right now. So for 750 - 1tb Steam Deck > Rog Ally 512gb for 1300

            • @Ruddaga: Any links to that 1TB upgrade?

              • +2
                • @korda: Thanks @joshn000 and @korda

I haven’t done much research but is it easy to upgrade the SSD yourself?

I was thinking of just getting a 1TB microSD card

                  • +3

@zzzman: Pretty straightforward and oodles of guides/tutorials on YT

                  • +2

@zzzman: Ideally you'd want everything installed on an SSD rather than a microSD as the read speeds are much faster on an SSD (pcie3.0 is up to 3500MB/s compared to microSD card at around 130MB/s but the significance of that will depend on the games you are playing. If you're playing emulated games then the microSD speed will be plenty, but if load times are important to you then you should go for the SSD upgrade.

There's a fair few YouTube videos on the SSD upgrade nowadays.

                  • +1

@zzzman: Sorry delayed reply. Yeah plenty of options for SSD's to use for it.

I literally just followed a step by step guide on google.

Have done it twice now, both times no issues.

                    Good luck.

                    • @Ruddaga: Thanks for the replies everyone.

I bought the WD 1TB SSD from Aliexpress.

Should I wait til that arrives and upgrade the storage first before I start installing games and EmuDeck etc?

                      • @zzzman: I mean you can have a bit of a play around but when you install the SSD you'll have to re download it all.

                        Up to you.

  • +3

    Just bought one, thanks skido!

  • +6

Great price, but I think I'll hold out and wait for an upgraded model.

    • Holding out for the same reason

    • +3

      Was thinking the same.
But I imagine when the next model comes around, I could put this on marketplace for not much loss.

      • Kind of deal I'd be looking for if you've already got a case, dock and any mods etc.

    • +13

Yep, next model will be available in Australia in 5 years or so so will wait till then

    • +3

Valve already said they are happy with the performance of the Steam Deck, refreshes will be to battery life and other ease of use features.

      • So be it. Also a good way to flag with customers to not wait on their product…

    • +3

yeah then wait till 2025/26, Valve said they wont update it anytime soon

      • -2

Fine by me. There's shortfalls that other devices will address very soon, so I'm happy to wait and see what rises to the surface.

  • +4

Thank god for ebay plus, I can return my allphones order and get this and save another $50 odd. Thanks OP

    • I did the same, luckily I'm still waiting for my order otherwise I would have opened it already.

  • -1

64GB only has emmc storage btw

    • +16

I think many people who purchased 64gb will have a plan to replace it with an SSD at 512GB storage size or greater.

      • -6

He means the 64gb is not a nvme slot.

        • +19

Nah, I can confirm the 64gb also uses NVMe slot.

    • emmc is fine for steam os. Just wait for 2230 SSDs for come down in price in the next 2 years as more handheld PC uses that SSD standard.

  • Can I play Half Life 2 on this?

    • +28

Can you play a 2004 game on a 2020s console? Yes.

      • Made me lol

      • What about HL3?

        • +7

I'm afraid the deck wouldn't live long enough to support a game launched in 2050

      • what I meant is that certain games are not compatible, you cannot play all the Steam library on this mobile console

        • +1

All valve games have native linux support so it makes sense they would all work on their linux console.

    • You do know that an average Android phone can play HL2 right?

      • +1

I am interested on this. I have HF2 on steam and can I play it on Android ?

  • +1

Thanks op, I bit. Been wanting this for ages.

  • Can we upgrade the ssd in this mode ?

  • +1

Anyone tried assetto corsa on the steam deck with all the assessories connected

  • Finally bit the bullet and got one

  • Is it worth buying?

  • Ignoring the 64gb storage here. But SD vs Rog Ally for Diablo 4?

Seems like Rog Ally is a no brainier

    • +7

You also game to ignore the price difference

      • 100% valid point.

Just wondering if you can even plau D4 on SD?

I also have an Xbox series x.. wondering if buying on MS store and using remote play will be a good alternative.

Need to have that flexibility from PC/Tv to handheld
