    also 64GB version for $169.39

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/394489045605

    • +1

Was too slow typing that in just now LOL

    • +1

If just used as a streamer the 64GB one at that price is a steal.
The 128GB has thread support and can act as a smart device hub.

    • 128gb for 211 is a good price for sure I play alot of apple arcade and other games on the apple TV so this is a welcome edition to space, and the other reason is its the only model with ethernet.

      • What are some good games on Apple Arcade? Last time I checked, I didn't really find that many that appealed to me (this was a year ago).

        • I mostly play oceanhorn 2, Sonic Racing and hot Lava,

recently got into Cat Quest II because its a game in my car game library usually like to play it on long charges. good game.

great device, good deal. The battery on the remote though… not great. The older version (with the big touch pad) lasted longer, but that was a terrible remote.

    • +8

      what? mine lasts ages…

    • +5

You are a hard man/woman to please, lol

    • I had some trouble with this model’s remote when first purchased, drop outs, battery only lasting a couple of weeks between recharge etc. after the 16.1 OS update it has been fine ever since. In fact I think it would have to be some months since last recharge, and we use the ATV by default as a substitute for the laggy and crappy HiSense OS.

    • If it is within 2 years take it to Apple atore as faulty. It should go for ages UNLESS your kids use it solidly fir gaming or something.

      • Ah right, thanks. I’ll take it to Apple then!

    • Had mine for almost a year. I have only charged it twice. Maybe something wrong with yours?

      • Sounds like it! I’ll take it to Apple next week and check it out

    • Can you pair the old remotes to this one? I have the old 4th gen one too.

      • Yes, even the very first IR apple remote.

  • +1

if i am not apple person and hate apple (especially itunes) - does it make sense to buy this apple tv to transcode x265 from plex server? or better get nvidia shield pro second hand ?

    • -8

The Shield Pro trumps this. I actually dont even see the point of this device unless you're a fanboy stuck in the ecosystem.

      • +4

ah i see. okay then forget apple

        • +1

I have a Shield and Apple TV 4K. The reason I have both is because I’m picky and each does certain things well. I use my Shield purely for Plex since it’s the only client device that supports bitstreaming lossless tracks with Atmos to my AV receiver.

I use my Apple TV for streaming apps like Disney+, Prime etc. because it has gigabit ethernet (not needed for streaming apps, but handy since my wife prefers using Plex on tvOS to watch BD rips) and can do refresh rate switching via match content feature.

      • +2

Its great if your TV OS sucks and it can be controlled natively with any iPhone.

Plus I love how easily I can watch stuff with audio going thru my Airpods

        • +4

I agree. Everyone has a different situation but being able to easily & seamless switch to AirPods (you get a notification on the TV to switch if you open the case nearby) and share the audio between multiple AirPods is pretty handy. I don't have a full surround audio system either so the fake surround via the
          headphones is nice.

Also having it run as a HomeKit hub with Matter support could be a very convenient way to run a smart home for some (single device that you already have for TV streaming anyway).

Other than that it just a fairly standard streaming box, albeit a pretty simple to use one that I've rarely had to troubleshoot, and if that's the only requirement then there are definitely other options to consider.

      • +4

Sigh, very post about the ATV or shield descends into this pointless argument initiated by children.

        • True. Once upon a time, the target was Apple Macs but since the M1 came out, it became much harder to make a point so the haters have to focus on another target ;-)

    • No, it doesn’t make sense. If you bought this Apple TV there’s a good chance you wouldn’t hate Apple anymore (it’s good) and even a risk of becoming an “Apple person” (oh noes, iSheep!!!1)

      • -3

Nah already many sheep i will pass

      • -1

If you bought this Apple TV there’s a good chance you wouldn’t hate Apple anymore

I have an Apple TV and it sucks. It was one of the first gen and you can't install apps on it, you only get the apps that Apple decides you should have. This is the type of behaviour that makes me hate Apple even more…

        • +2

That device is literally 10 years old at this point, the first Apple TV to support the App Store was all the way back in 2015, that's like judging Samsung because a Samsung Galaxy S3 is garbage today

          • -1

            @FrugalSplack:

That device is literally 10 years old at this point

Apple were still selling this model at least in 2019. That's only 4 years ago.
And your answer is that I should throw away a fully functioning device and replace it every-time a new feature is released?
Stop drinking the kool-aid. A streaming device that doesn't even come with the biggest streaming service on the internet (YouTube) is just plain old crap.

            • +2

@1st-Amendment: The Apple TV 3rd gen was discontinued and removed from Apple's online store in 2016, seven years ago https://9to5mac.com/2016/10/04/apple-tv-third-gen-discontinu…

Also it came with YouTube pre-installed so no idea what you're talking about

              • @FrugalSplack:

Also it came with YouTube pre-installed so no idea what you're talking about

Mine doesn't have Youtube. What are you talking about?

                • +1

@1st-Amendment: The YouTube app was disabled on 3rd gen in 2021, five years after the device was discontinued

                  • -3

                    @FrugalSplack:

The YouTube app was disabled on 3rd gen in 2021

And you think this is ok?

                    • +2

@1st-Amendment: I don’t expect them to eternally develop the app and keep it working for obsolete 10 year old hardware that barely anyone still uses

                      • @FrugalSplack:

I don’t expect them to eternally develop the app and keep it working

The OP said that buying an Apple product would make someone not hate them, but I was giving an example of why that is not the case.
If you are happy to throw your money away on planned obsolescence then fill your boots. Not everyone is happy to do that.

    • +5

The AppleTV is pretty great, even if you aren't tied into the Apple ecosystem. I have both and would be happy with either one. Shield is more customisable for sure, if you maybe use IPTV services and like modding your tech gadgets, etc. But if you just want something out of the box that is rock solid and supports all the major apps, you can't go wrong with the ATV.

    • +1

I have both, I don't use the Shield (2017) anymore. But I am deep in the Apple ecosystem.
Only reason I haven't sold the Shield is for Lossless Atmos support.
The Apple TVs interface is so much nicer IMO. I never understood why the Shield didn't have a native 4K UI.

    • +2

I run infuse on mine, and don't bother transcoding, it plays everything native and I've retired my shield. YMMV.

      • Infuse is the way to go. You can point it at a Plex or Emby library if you like which will update watch state.

  • Someone tell me I don’t need this if I have a roku and firetv max
I’m also waist deep in Apple ecosystem 🤦‍♂️

    • I hate to tell you but that's actually quicksand you're waist deep in, which means you're in deep s**t. But don't worry. Tim Apple has your back.

    • -2

Did you mean to write waste deep?

    • You don’t need it but nice to have if you have apple fitness sub

  • is your firetv max as powerful as nvidia shield pro ? (same ram etc) ? some people maybe interested

  • +1

Thank you, We finally got one

  • should i get this if i already have google chromecast 4k and only using it to watch netflix 4k on tv? the OS just feels a bit laggy to me.

    • If the lag bothers you enough to part with your cash, then go for it. ATV is smooth as butter and very reliable for Netflix and all the main apps. Premium build and control etc. Only upgrade if the cash side of things doesn't bother you, otherwise, put up with a little lag :P

      • +1

Mine crashes at least once every 3 months and I have to hard restart. Gen 3 4k 🍎TV

        • Crashes as in hangs or you need to reset the software? Mine hangs probably once every 2-3 months, but I do use it heavily. Same model as you. I do own an old high end shield and a few normal and one 4K chrome cast too and they all have a higher crash rate. So I guess pick your poison. For me, overall it would be the ATV or high end shield. They also have the highest premium so makes sense.

          • @zubzub: As in any app I try to open, I click on app black screen for 3 seconds and goes back to apple tv home screen. It's rare about once every 3 months with heavy use. Only a restart will fix it " unplug electrical cable, plug back in"

            • @CheapOjoe: I've literally never had it lock up. We use it as our only device for streaming everything and infuse from the home server. I'm connected via ethernet to our router. I wonder if it's a wifi thing?

              • @Scrobo: Might be, can't be bothered testing that theory as it will take a long time.

                • @CheapOjoe: Fair enough. I always go for ethernet when possible on any of my devices.

    • If only used as a streamer only really need to upgrade to an ATV if the lag bothers you.

  • Any issues with running Plex on ATV?

    • +1

Nope, the app works perfectly. I prefer infuse though.

  • Netflix on these Apple TV is shit!! Can’t even see the preview screen shots during skips.

    • I thought everyone is saying how much better ATV is to something a third of the price. It doesn’t even have a good Netflix app?

    • You definitely can.
I just took this photo. https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/18691/104712/img_2532.…

And yes I need an OLED TV for my bedroom. The bleed hurts me.

      • +1

It only shows you the frame at the position you are on, you can’t see it like the android TVs where you can see 3 back screens and 3 forward screens!! Makes a big difference if you want to rewind to a particular spot without having to check every frame.

        https://ibb.co/D87k8sC

        • Ahh yeah. It definitely used to work like this, I think either Apple made Netflix use their video player, or Netflix decided to stop supporting their custom video player on TVOS.
I agree, that implementation is better.
PS we have similar looking TVs.

EDIT: I will say my C9 OLEDs netflix app has that implementation of the frame skipping but its never accurate. ie it never jumps to the exact frame its showing.

          • +1

@theguyrules: Mine is a Sony and it’s just the best. The only reason why I got Apple was for the smooth experience!! I mean all other apps are great, especially Plex!! But Netflix is just simply crap on Apple!!

    • +1

I think something is up, you absolutely do see the shots during skips. The Netflix ATV app is the best of the versions on my various boxes (Also have PS5/XBOX-X/Shield/Google built in to TV) by a long shot.

    • Yeah, the Apple TV uses an older version of Netflix that doesn't have a lot of the features seen on the latest version of the app, and also does not support interactive content.

…and as a bonus, the Chromecast now supports frame rate matching within Netflix (which is the one feature the older Apple TV app did have).

    • I would argue it's much better - no forced starting of videos when you're just looking at a title, smooth scrolling through menus, and frame rate switching.

      • The Chromecast with Google TV and Fire TV now have native auto frame rate matching for Netflix, and the Shield has matching for Netflix too via the Refresh Rate tool, and none of these have the "forced starting of videos" any more either.

  • Fantasic box if you are part of the Apple ecosystem - see tvOS new features: https://www.apple.com/au/newsroom/2023/06/tvos-17-brings-fac…

I mean for me, these work great:
    - Pairing Airpods pro with single click (for those late nights without disturbing family)
    - Touch enabled SLIM remote with voice support (works great almost every time)
    - High res Apple Music to my AMP (24-bit/44 KHz)

For non Apple users, it still is a simpler interface without a lot of clutter

  • Just had my first TV upgrade in nearly a decade. Can anyone tell me if a device like this is necessary (TV is Sony A80K)? Is the inbuilt casting capable of 4k60?

    • +1

Is the inbuilt casting capable of 4k60?
Yes, the Sony A80K supports the ability to 'Cast' from your Mobile device via ChromeCast or AirPlay (Confirmed via Sony's A80K Specs) but of course theres many other factors to 'casting' which includes internet speeds, what you're casting from, your local network speed etc.

      • If you're just using the Sony with Netflix, Disney etc, there's generally no issues using the default apps and features such as ChromeCast/AirPlay.
      • If you want no ads, smoother UI/UX, ability to play 3rd party apps (E.g., PLEX, Kodi, Infuse (ATV), etc.) I would HIGHLY recommend the AppleTV or Nvidia Shield Pro, the Sony's in-built Smart TV operating system may struggle with particular applications and playback of particular media via 3rd party apps.

Edit: I have the previous generation of Apple TV 4K and it is powerful as hell :) I highly recommend it.

      • Thanks for this. Did some digging and I may look for the Shield. No lossless audio kills ATV for me.

        • +1

As someone who has a lot of hi-fi, to really get FLAC/ALAC out of home theatre speakers you need to be running good speakers. Like in the range of 5k-10k references from a nice amp.

I have some vintage Krix’s floor standing speakers from a marantz AVR and honestly can’t tell the difference when streaming my FLAC from my home NAS vs Apple Music via ATV.

So unless you’re running really good speakers + amp, I’d advise against aiming for lossless but rather CPU + OS level niceties.

  • The kids love the Karaoke feature on the 3rd gen ATV.

  • it's 3rd Gen
