  • doesn't seem that low,

Valve is also having a Steam sale in US at the moment

    • +6

Yes I know. They are having a sale in Europe as well. It's a bummer that we have to rely on third party resellers.

    • +13

yeah but the trade off is you'd have to life in the us *shudder *

    • +5

Its currently $359 USD + sales tax = $395usd. Foreign exchange calculator says that would cost you $627.85AUD. Thats without shipping.

Doubt it would be any cheaper if Valve sold direct here considering the Australian tax we normally get slugged ontop.

  • I was just wondering, is it possible to play games on the steamdeck without an internet connection? Do I need to be connected to the internet in order to play them?

I'm planning to purchase this device and wanted to make sure I can enjoy it during long flights.

    • +2

yes, you install them to the internal memory or connected drive

    • you will need many power banks
or airplane lets you hook up usb devices

this will only last about 1.5hrs for AAA intensive games

      • +1

Steam Deck battery is 5200mAh and you can carry up to 26800mAh on a plane, which will give you a couple charges.

        • does airplane let you use usb charging for long flights
or is that just business class?

most cheap flights will definitely not let you do anything
          even water is charge

          can you carry 2 x 20 000mAh powerbank
          or max is that number?

most power banks are 20000 etc or 40 000 mAh etc
          not get 26800mAh

          • +1

@pinkybrain: I've flown like 4 different flights in the past 2 years all economy, all have had USBs or power points.

            • @robeh: but can they charge this? i think sdeck need high wattage

              • @CyberMurning: that is true, didn't think about wattage. I suppose only flights with power points.

                • @robeh: but some plane has the normal prong socket under the seat so you can just bring your compact 45/65/90w charger + cable and thats it unlimited hours
at least my last flight has that socket. not usb the normal one we have at home

          • @pinkybrain: Anker make a 26800mah brick for this reason, it’s fantastic. I use it on flights all the time.

Edit: you can carry 2. Also the flying limit is actually 100Wh per powerbank. The Anker 26800 converts to about 96.5Wh.

          • @pinkybrain: Yes you can carry 2x20000 mAh power bank except a couple airlines I believe. I've done that a couple of times and there's no issue with it.
Obviously check airline policy beforehand if you wanna do so

      • +1

you'll get a few hours with emulation or 2D metroidvania like games

        • +2

I got something like 5 hours playing Inscryption after tweaking my TDP.

        • Powertools Decky plugin helps to get much more battery life out of less damanding games/emulators

    • You can play games that don't require to be online to play but you need to make sure they are all updated and switch steamOS to offline mode to play them.

You won't be able to play them if you stay in online mode with no connection. You won't even be able to play games outside of steam (emulation etc).

Fantastic device though, I love mine.

      • You won't even be able to play games outside of steam (emulation etc).

huh? we cant play SNES games on steamdeck offline?

        • I tried in online mode and it didn't work. You will need to switch steamOS to offline mode then it will work.

          • @drinkin-beer: oh ok weird os but okay. i dont game AAA or those first shoot games or online games or complicated games or long hours games so this is not for me i think

            • @CyberMurning: Pretty sure it's the same for steam games on PC too. You need to put steam into offline mode to play them.

              I think…

  • Will wait for Asus Rog Ally

    • Don't see it coming down to this price anytime soon

Already available for pre-order off JB HIFI if that's what you're asking

      • +1

paying with discounted gift cards is your best bet

    • +3

I’ve got both. For this price (nearly half of the Ally) this is totally worth it.

      • Inquiring about the Ally, considering picking one up later this year

Any specific problems that you've had with it? Did you get that MicroSD card overheating problem like with lots of other people? The Ally as a whole looks really attractive but if reliability is down the drain I'd consider the Deck over it.

        Cheers

        • +1

No issue with the SD card (yet). But I don’t use it as heavily.

Biggest gripe is the sticks. Especially the deadzone that they haven’t patched yet. Otherwise besides minor software bugs, it’s been pretty good.

    • +3

I just had to return mine. So much wrong with that device my lord.

  • Anyone aware of the all time low $?

  • can you install games from XB gamepass onto it yet?

    • Only if you install Windows. You can only stream Game Pass games if using SteamOS.

  • Have a Nintendo Switch and PS4, is this of any additional benefits to this TV gaming setup?

    • Steam catalogue & cheaper games in the long run (you can buy a lot of games for 20 bucks compared to PS and nintendo stores)

      • +1

Steam doesn't appear to be as cheap as it once was. Many of the games listed as Great on Deck I have bought cheaper on the Xbox Store.

        • Steam itself isn't often the cheapest, but all the 3rd party sellers and marketplaces for Steam keys. I've had positive experiences with them ie. Eneba and G2A, but obviously YMMV

    • In my opinion, no, not really.

    • +1

Based on the given information, I would say yes, the Steam Deck is essentially a portable linux-based Gaming PC so the benefit is access to PC/Steam games and playing PC/Steam games on the go.

I have a PS5, PS4, modded Switch, and a gaming PC with a 3080 and I don't think my Steam Deck is redundant. Diablo 4 on the go is awesome.

      • Thanks, what benefits do you get by modding your switch? Is there a guide?

        • Roms

        • What impoze said - free games. And yeah plenty of guides online, but you have to be sure that your switch is mod-able.

  • +3

Just wanted to weight in. I just bought this, at this price, after returning my ROG Ally.

I’m a game pass subscriber (paid almost full price for a few years, don’t ask) and yet the bugs and performance issues on the Ally just aren’t worth it. In my 48 hours with the device I’ve had maybe 20 separate issues.

    • -1

20 issues with the steam deck? Like what?

      • +2

I think he meant 20 issues with ROG Ally?

      • +1

20 issues with the ally yes.

        Games not starting
Entire system power failure resulting boot to bios (happened about 5 or 6 times)
        Games not installing
        Games crashing
        Fingerprint sensor
Not waking from sleep, need hard reset
When it did wake from sleep, game crashed
15-20 FPS on some games even on all the lowest settings (cyberpunk)

        A few more.

        • How has your experience with the Steam Deck been?

          • @gruffjaguar: I actually had one for a few months and then sold it when I heard about the Ally. Look, it’s not perfect, my any stretch, but it’s significantly better if you just want to play games.

  • I want to give some feedback for people on the fence as well.. I am a massive PC gamer, but got a modded switch + PS4 as well. Diablo 4 was obviously going to be a big game to play in the coming months. I still picked up the Steam deck..

For people who have great wifi at home, streaming Diablo 4 from your PC using moonlight (with high quality textures) is just as smooth as rendering it on the steam deck, with the added benefit of higher visuals and longer battery life… And when you need to leave the house? just grab the steam deck and render it on the deck!!

    It's actually really really cool,

  • Do these 3rd party sellers usually include an AU power brick? This listing doesn't specify clearly

    • +1

Rarely. Some people here have certainly received one (from other resellers) but most resellers just include a US to AU plug converter.

    • There is no official AU Steam Deck power brick from my understanding.
