      • +2

You still need a modem though yeah

        • -3

just got this and modem was provide by nbn

          • +5

@myth88: nbn don't provide modems for FTTN. You need to provide your own VDSL2 modem for FTTN and FTTB.

nbn provide the NTD for FTTP and HFC and the NCD for FTTC.

Double check what you have by using this link.

Actually you don't. Its weird, you still need a modem to set it up but after that you can by pass the modem and connect it directly to the ethernet NBN port and the Next WiFi router will act as the modem. It was a bitch to set up but it worked for me.

@jonow83: A VDSL2 modem is needed for FTTN and FTTB.

Nest Wi-Fi can be plugged in straight to the nbn NCD and nbn NTD. Nest Wi-Fi is not a modem. Nest Wi-Fi is a router with Wi-Fi 5 access point(s).

            FTTN, FTTB = VDSL2 modem configured as a bridge + Nest Wi-Fi.
            FTTC = nbn NCD + Nest Wi-Fi.
FTTP, HFC, fixed wireless = nbn NTD + Nest Wi-Fi.

@jonow83: How does a wifi router without a vdsl2 modem function work as a vdsl2 modem?

            • -2

@Xizor: i just have this plug into nbn box and it worked

    • +3

      Yes it would work.

You would need a seperate VDSL modem, for example any ISP provided modem is fine. You’d put it into bridge mode and connect the google wifi to one of the Ethernet ports on the VDSL modem.

This would also work directly into an ‘nbn connection box’ skipping the modem for any carrier that doesn’t need VLAN tagging credentials (TPG)

  • Will Officeworks price beat by 5%?

    • No, because it’s a clearance line

  • What’s the new model? If got 4 of these but tempted to get a few extra for next house if they’re being discontinued

I'm guessing the new ones will have Wifi 6E

    • +1

      Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro with Wi-Fi 6E.

    • Plenty of 'satellite' units available second hand for $50-70 on various marketplaces.

  • Just a heads up, so many people using Macs at work have issues with these things constantly dropping out after upgrading their OS

  • Oh dam hoped it would be wifi 6

  • What's the ETA on the pro? Hanging on to 1st gen til then.
Can get the UK pro model 3 pack for $605 via Amazon

  • I got this, i still havent figure out how to pair smart home devices with only 5G wifi.

    • The workaround i figured out is to turn off the google and then name my phones hotspot the same as the google wifi (same password as well). Then youll be able to set up the device and it will connect to the google wifi when its back on.

Ugh, I've just ditched these. Kept dropping out, needing resetting & generally too painful.

The new TP-Link are dull and flawless.

  • What to link did you get… I'm looking for cheap tri band but doesn't seem to exist

    • Yep, same struggle for me with a cheap Lamborghini…

These weren't even that good when they were new.

Solid solution, very modular. I've used for many sites. The speakers are great for casual play and radio. Google's Home App keeps getting better. Sadly still stuck with WiFi 5 but for the average user this isn't a consideration. Also handy to have push notices when the NBN goes down and it's offline, so folks know not to rush home if they've work to do after the office.

  • Google a month ago refused to tell me if the 6e nest pros would ever be released in Australia. The uk variant imported 3 pack was in the low $500s recently but are no longer available.
